ITunes not removing files duplicate files or organizing properly

I have iTunes set to keep my files organized (i.e. in directories matching the albums and artist names) but recently it stopped doing this properly. Also I spent a lot of time deleting duplicates and clicked to remove from hard drive as well but in many case it didn't remove he duplicates. I don't know why.
I want to back up my whole library but i want to make sure it's "clean" first.
Is there any way to fix this problem?
Maybe the easiest way is to make a copy of all the MP3 files and just delete the whole iTunes library and rebuild it, then go through and delete the duplicates again. Would this work? Is this safe? Does anyone have instructions on how to do this?
Thanks.

My problem is not related to that other thread, however it appears the same thing that's causing this problem is causing the problem with the ID3 tags so there is no need to discuss in two separate threads. Thanks.

  • Could not remove files FlashUtil9c.exe and Flash9c.ocx

    Hello everybody!
I have a problem. I found that NTFS permissions don't allow
    me to remove files
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash\FlashUtil9c.exe and
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9c.ocx while I still having
administrator status under my WinXP SP2 Prof. Of course, I was
frighten and though that it is a virus. I removed these files
manually and found, that my Flash Player doesn't work. I downloaded
it again and installed. Now I see that these files are again at
their place and have the same permissions. Is it a virus or just a
bug? Or is it so necessary for Flash Player to keep these files
    locked?
Please, don't answer so that is a special uninstall util for
    FP - I know that. Isn't it a virus, that's a question.

Check this out... Follow the instructions as I did from
Darren McNally - Adobe ... No more nagging Flash9c.ocx ... It
    works...

  • Itunes not finding files

After a disaster recovery on my computer I used my ipod to transfer all the music files back to my PC (after opening the hidden files etc).
I have selected the file from my PC and uploaded them into Itunes and synced my ipod which is working fine.
The problem I have is when I go to play any of the songs using Itunes I receive the error message "cannot find file". I know where they are on my PC but as the files are all named as per the ipod filing system (rather than by artist and song title) I do not know which file to choose.
Is there a way of getting Itunes to find all the files?????
    Any help would be appreciated.

iTunes is still probably looking for the files in their location on your iPod's Hard Disk rather than on your PC desktop.  You can look to see where iTunes is looking for these files by right->clicking on one of these tracks and selecting Get Info. When the window appears, look at Where field at the bottom of the Summary tab.
If it's still looking for them on your iPod's hard drive, you'll need to remove these files from iTunes and re-add import them.  However, before doing that again, head to Edit-> Preferences and select the Advanced tab. Make sure there is a tick mark next to Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library is ticked.  It wouldn't hurt to also tick the Keep iTunes Media folder organized as well. From there, you can re-import the file's from your iPod.

  • ITunes not storing files in iTunes media folder location

A number of years ago I wanted to move my itunes media files to an external drive. At the time an article was posted that explained how to do such that. Additionally the article explained how to put the media files in one folder on the external file server and all the itunes definition files in another folder on the same external file server. It worked perfectly! All seemed well. Of course since making this change there have been many many updates to iTunes and the OS.
Recently, I was scanning through the folders of the external file server and noticed some media files that appeared in the iTunes application listing were missing in the physical iTunes media folder (folder A). After a little searching I found the media files were in the iTunes definitions folder (folder B). Initially I thought somehow I had changed the folder location under the iTunes advanced tab. I checked it stilled pointed to the ORIGINAL folder A location. Yet iTunes had for a while as it turns out had created a whole new media folder tree and was adding the media files to that media tree (folder B). This is the folder the original only contained the iTunes definitions.
Thinking I had made a mistake somewhere sometime ago, I copied all the media files to the proper folder (folder A) and reset the iTunes Media folder location to point to folder A. All was fine.
Today I added some new media to the iTunes library and once again, iTunes created a new media folder tree in folder B were only the iTunes definitions are supposed to be stored. So once again I moved the media files to the proper folder.
There is no question THIS IS A SOFTWARE BUG. It does NOT matter what folder location is specified in the Preferences->Advanced->itunes media location is specified, iTunes will either CHANGE the folder location to wherever the definitions files are located or begin putting the media files where the definitions files are located even though the iTunes media location is setting to a different folder.
when this started I do not know. I have been using itunes for a number of years and once I had my external file server set up never had reason to check it.
One might ask why put the media files in one location and the definition files in another location. That is because there was a time when iTunes for some reason would think it definition files were corrupted and start to do nasty things to the media library. Once I lost a number of songs it is then when I found a note in this forum that suggested putting the definitions in one folder and the media in another folder. It was great idea. Is there a work around of a fix for this bug?

    Some additional information.
When I click the apps tab in iTunes, some of the applications listed are actually songs (the songs are also shown in the music list and point to the proper location), when I click Get Info on some of the apps, it points to a song, and some apps that actually exist in the Mobile Apps folder are shown to located in a song folder. Bottom line the apps database is corrupted.
When I consolidated the music files I did not touch the mobile applications folder. As best I can tell all the movies and songs are fine (about 3000 items in total).
When I export the library it does not include the apps in the xml file. So deleting the iTunes DB and re-importing the .xml will not work.
To recap. All the songs and movies are in one folder (folder A). This is the folder listed in the Preferences->Advanced->Itunes media location. The apps folder is located in a different folder (folder B) where the iTunes definition files are located. How they got there I do not know.
How do I fix the apps tab and have the app icons (and physical applications) to point to the proper location? Also to remove the songs listed in the apps list without removing the song from the iTunes library.

  • CS3 Uninstall does not remove files

I have just purchased CS5.5 Master Collection and have successfully installed the software that I wanted to install at this time -- no problem.  Before I installed Master Collection CS5.5, I uninstalled CS3 which was on the computer -- I did not deactivate it.  I ran the uninstall program as instructed and it took perhaps 20 minutes to supposedly clean everything out...I was pleased.  However, upon restarting the computer and going to the applications folder, it seems that all of the CS3 folders still remain, taking up room.  So, I ran the clean up software to clean out those files -- they are are still there.  Uninstaller and the clean up program both show that CS3 is removed, but the files remain in Applications Folder.  Can I just drag these remaining CS3 folders to the trash and get rid of them that way?
    Small Town Gal.
I'm working on a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    Dear Jeff,
CS3 has been replaced by CS5.5, so I assume that CS5.5 is all that I need.  If I drag CS3 to the trash to remove it, will removing it that way remove any files that CS5.5 needs?  Bridge CS3 did seem to have locked permissions, so I unlocked it, but it still doesn't appear anywhere for me to uninstall via installer.  I also have an older version of Photoshop Elements 3 that I kept active for use of NIK filters, and that one doesn't appear anywhere either in Adobe Uninstaller -- can I drag PElements 3 to the trash without getting rid of any needed files?

  • Deleting, but not removing files

When you delete a file from iTunes but choose not to send it to the trash can where does it go? How can you restore it to iTunes?

it stays right where it is.
to add it again (if you have not deleted it), just "add to library" and browse to the desired file.

  • Itunes not downloading files completely :/

I am having a common problem- purchasing song files that end up not playing the complete song in the itunes player.
I have deleted the song files from itunes, and downloaded them again via my purchase history in itunes store. Some songs play a little bit more than what the pervious download was, but still not complete. Does this mean I just have to keep downloading the songs again and again until I get lucky and obtain the full file(s)?
I have emailed support but have not recieved a reply yet :/

I can get the download page, but the section you need to actually get the download (where you put your e-mail) is replaced by one of those "can't connect/having difficulty to locate" pages.
Have another try, diva. (I was getting that in IE 8, but the download controls are showing for me now.)

  • ITunes 11 removed Display duplicates option

I downloaded iTunes 11 and there is no longer an option to Display Dupicates in the File menu.  Am I missing it somewhere or did they get rid of it?

I don't think implementation would have been an issue. Much of the behind the scenes code won't have been changed. The duplicates filter will most likely be a pretty standard SQL query.
One of the problems with the old display duplicates feature was that novice users would select all the displayed items and delete them, only to discover that their library now contained no copies of the tracks that had previously been duplicated. Even when this is understood there are a number of different ways of generating duplicates in iTunes, some of which create extra files on the hard drive, some of which don't. When deleting it is important to know which you have otherwise you can delete the only physical copy of a track in error. This is one of the reasons I wrote the DeDuper script, not because I needed it, but because I was interested to see if it could be done automatically and safely. I haven't completely achieved the second goal yet (problems with a special case where one file is added to the library from two different paths), but automating the process allows preservation & amalgamation of ratings, play counts, playlist membership which just isn't possible by hand.  See this thread for more background on it.

  • ITunes not removing watched podcasts from iPhone

iTunes (7.7.0.43) is no longer removing podcasts from an attached iPhone (2.0) during synchronization, even if they have a play count >= 1, and iTunes is set to synchronize only "unplayed" podcasts. Even setting iTunes to not sync any podcasts doesn't result in any of them being deleted from the iPhone when synchronizing. Synchronizing TV shows ("all unwatched" -- why the inconsistent terminology?) on the other hand work as expected. The only way to get podcasts off the iPhone at the moment appears to be to remove them from iTunes. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I'm experiencing the same thing...thought I had changed a setting somewhere. Let me know if you find a fix.

Two Windows scripts to make playlists of Duplicates and Exact Duplicates. Use shift-delete to remove selected tracks from the library as well as the playlist.
There is also my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
    Enjoy.

puchased music in itunes. but no file can be found. Have checked for available downloads but nothing available. Went to purchase again thinking i would not be charged again, but it warns me that i will actually be buying again and may have duplicates in library after purchase. Normaly after i purchase from itunes, it is a free download any time after, and on my other devices.
Why can't itunes locate these files?

It has always been very basic to maintain a backup of the important files and data on your computer.
Use that backup to put everything back.

  • ITunes not deleting renamed files?

Have other experiences this in iTunes...
I'm pretty manic about tagging my files, so whenever I get files from friends and whatnot that aren't tagged properly, I agonize and do so in excrutiating detail. All that's fine.
But now that I go into several actual folders, iTunes hasn't gotten rid of all the older named files. All the newly retagged files are in their properly named folders, but some of the old ones are still in folders with old album names. There's also an abundance of files like "song title" followed by "song title 1". What's with all these duplicates? Anyone else seeing this annoying breakdown in iTunes command of the file system?
    Thanks in advance!

Similar things happen to me all the time. I have not encountered your exact problem, but a host of things like it. Maybe someone can explain exactly how iTunes "sees" audio files. For example how does it determine the order of songs in an album? I notice the file names start with 01, 02, 03, etc which do not show up in the itunes screen. But when I try to inject these numbers in the original filename to change the order of songs it does not work.
The one thing I do know is that when you remove a song from iTunes the original file is still there - it just is not recognized in your song list. You have to delete it with a separate action.
