ITunes not seeing music

I used to have my music on a shared computer.  That computer has since moved on with the music.  My library link is looking still to that location for the music.  It can't find it so naturally I can't play it.  I put all my new music in the user/music/itunes/itunes music folder.  iTunes cannot see that music, so I'm stuck.

Moving tracks from where iTunes expects to find them to somewhere else by hand causes problems. Ideally you would move the tracks that you do have back to where iTunes last knew where they were. My request
"Select a single broken track, press ctrl-i to Get Info and say No when asked to locate the file. On the summary tab iTunes will report where it is looking for the file. "
is designed to elicit the information on where the file that you do have, should be, with a view to getting you to slide them back there, at least on a temporary basis, then, if you want them moved, to move them in a way that doesn't break iTunes connection to the file. Reading between the lines however, I guess the location these files used to be on is on the shared computer you no longer have access to so lets try another approach.
Download my FindTracks script and point it in the direction of the folder that has what media you do have. It should be able to repair the links of the tracks that can be found. FindTracks uses some fuzzy matching routines and searches for multiple potential locations. For more details see this thread
Once that's done...
Lost & Found
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist (it may take some time to count the tracks that are to be dropped). Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist.
You can press ctrl-a to select all and then shift-delete to clear the remaining broken entries.

  • ITunes not seeing music on new computer

I just copied my iTunes Music folder to a new computer. However the new iTunes that I downloaded on this pc is not seeing the music. I checked the path and it is pointed to the correct folder. If I go in and and do an Import the song will show up in the recently added playlist. Does anyone know if there is a quicker way to get these songs recognized? A mass import or maybe something else that I may have set wrong?
    Thanks in advance

When you moved iTunes to the new computer did you copy the whole iTunes folder or just the iTunes Music folder? If you only copied the music folder then you've left the library file behind and iTunes has created a new blank one. You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
If you did copy the whole iTunes folder then you need to locate the original library file. Presuming you put everything in the default location, try holding down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ (or C:\Username\Music\iTunes\ in Vista). Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you can't locate the library (if you've left it behind and no longer have access to the old computer for example), you'll have to make a new one by going to File>Add Folder to Library and adding the music from the iTunes Music folder that you did move.

  • ITunes not seeing music library on external drive?

I recently moved my iTunes to an external hard drive. I read the instructions on the apple support site on how to do everything. It said, down at the bottom of the article, that the hard drive must be opened before you launch iTunes in order for iTunes to see the library. Although I did everything instructed my iTunes, when launched, is not seeing any of the files that are on my external hard drive. They are still on the hard drive and I am scared to do anything more without some help for fear I may lose the data on my hard drive. Help!!

If you copied the music to the external drive yourself, you did not do it correctly.
Do you see any music when you open iTunes?

  • Itunes not seeing music and media on my iphone after transfer from XP to new Windows7  PC

Can someone please help me out here?  I don't know if I missed a step or need to do something else... I will be as detailed as I can without being too long-winded.  I have an old netbook running XP and got a new laptop and want to move over all my media and sync and use the new laptop.  I spent a lot of time reading about how to do this and here are the steps I took:
    1) Did a final backup/sync on old PC.
    2) Enabled home sharing on old PC.
    3) Installed itunes on new PC and hooked up iphone to authorize phone.
    4) Enabled home sharing on new PC and moved over all media (took FOREVER to complete this).
    5) Transferred purchases from iphone onto new PC.
    6) Exported playlists from old PC and then imported them to new PC
    7) Did a backup of phone on new PC and then tried to set up itunes to sync as it did on my old phone.
    8) Click sync and after checking for files to sync... Itunes says there is not enough space on my iphone to complete.
In Itunes on the new PC, I can see my iphone and my library matches when I click on the Itunes music library from the old PC.  However, when I click on music under my iphone, it only sees a single album that I recently purchased and also doesn't recognize any other media (movies, tv shows, tones) except for podcasts.
What is strange is that when I click on my iphone in Itunes... the status bar matches exactly what is on the phone in terms of audio, movies, etc with 6.2Gb of free space.  To further troubleshoot, I tried to copy over the itunes music library (xml file) from the old PC to the new PC with the same results.  I also did a shift start of itunes to choose the itunes library, still same result (didn't expect that to change).  I also uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled with the same results.
The music library paths are different on my old PC and my new PC not only because of path differences from XP to Windows7, but also because when I moved over the media from my old PC to new PC using home sharing... Itunes put media under the Itunes folder where I had it under a different folder on my old PC.
I'm afraid of doing a restore on the new PC since I have a feeling the backup might not work.  I could always go back and do a restore again on the old PC if it doesn't, but that means I would be back to the point I am currently at after waiting multiple hours of doing backup and restores.
What am I missing here?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

so i went ahead and did a restore from the new PC and then a restore from backup.  looks like that fixed everything... a few playlists were messed up and so far as i can tell, maybe just a few minor issues.

  • IPhone (and iTunes) not seeing music, podcast on iPhone.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, and several days after updating to 3.0.1 and using my iPhone without any trouble it has stopped seeing that it has music, podcasts, videos and custom ringtones on it. However, it does recognize that it has that amount of drive space occupied by "Other" items (when viewed in iTunes.)
On the iPhone itself, in Settings > About, it also shows that the correct amount of space is used, but it shows 0 songs, podcasts, etc.
I've searched around online but haven't found any mention of others having this problem... Any idea what might have gone wrong and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Something went wrong with the sync process, which can occur if the sync process is interrupted.
The only way to resolve this is by restoring your iPhone with iTunes. Sync your iPhone with iTunes immediately before doing so to update your iPhone's backup and any data that is kept synchronized.

  • Windows 7 Issue: iTunes Not Locating Music

I just upgraded to Windows 7 32 bit, and when I installed iTunes again, even though I chose my previous library file, it doesn't seem to be able to locate any of my old songs. All of the old songs are there, they play fine once I go through the process of locating them, I just can't seem to get iTunes to recognize where they are, even with the previous library chosen. I tried calling support, but apparently my support since 2001 means nothing to them and so they refuse to help me with my issue. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this issue, so that I don't have to load back all 851 songs in my library?

Here's what I had to do. Hopefully this will help. First I copied my entire iTunes library to Time Capsule. Once that was done I redirected my iTunes folder in the preferences to the Time Capsule. At first iTunes couldn't find the songs at all. Unfortunately, without having figured out the next step, I dumped my iTunes Library files on my Mac and reimported everything back in to iTunes. Unfortunately, I lost my playlists. Once everything was imported though, I still had problems with iTunes not seeing the songs. What I learned is that I have to go to the finder and mount the Time Capsule as a hard drive to the desktop. Then open iTunes. Since then, I have had no problem accessing my music or movies over iTunes. And, as long as I'm connected to my wireless network I can play my music on my laptop anywhere in the apartment. No longer having to be connected to an external hard drive. I've also noticed lately, that iTunes is getting familiar with my settings and is already mounting Time Capsule to the desktop when I open and play a song. Hope this helps.

  • ITunes not seeing my iPhone4...

This is prolly an old one, but here goes...
Phone arrived yesterday, attempted so sync on MacBook pro (running Leopard), iTunes not seeing phone.
    Re-installed iTunes 9.2, everything fine.
Today, attempting to do some more syncing, and, once again, iTunes has amnesia.
    What's going on here?
Any help would be truly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Just got my iPhone 4 today -iTunes doesn't see mine. Did your issue ever resolve? The phone says NO SERVICE. Was that your issue, too?

  • Rented a movie on my mac - trying to watch on apple tv (i think 2), but iTunes not "seeing" apple tv - so i can't 'move' the rental to the device.  ??

rented a movie on my mac - trying to watch on apple tv (i think 2), but iTunes not "seeing" apple tv - so i can't 'move' the rental to the device.  i'm brand new at apple tv - do i need to enable it or something?

Is it the little black box? If yes then it is the 2nd model. It won't show up in iTunes as there is no syncing involved. The only time it does is when you connect and need to restore the device.
You need to enable home sharing in iTunes and on ATV

  • ITunes not syncing music

    Hello,
I am having a problem with iTunes not syncing music to my iPad. I want to have my entire library on my iPad, this used to fit.
A few weeks ago I started getting an error, most of my music had vanished. I attempted to sync it back, but was told that there was not enough space on my iPad, despite no new files being added.I looked again and noticed something. I had 20GB of OTHER in iTunes, this is approximately the size of my music library.
It is fairly clear what happened, the music files were corrupted somehow, but were still there and taking up space on the iPad. So I decided to restore my iPad. First restoring and once everything had been wiped and back to factory setting, restoring from a backup.
This worked and I was left with only 1gb of other. At this point there was still no music on my device sync music was unchecked.
So once I was sure everything was up and running, I checked the sync music box... and nothing happened. It would begin synching, it would determine the tracks to sync for a moment... then it would quickly finish syncing without adding the music files.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you authorized your new computer: Store>Authorize this Computer?

  • Why is my latest itunes not syncing music with my music on my iphone 4s with iOS 7?

Why is my latest itunes not syncing music with my music on my iphone 4s with iOS 7?

Here's what I did. If you have an existing playlist and add a song to it, drag the whole playlist into the phone icon. It will ask if you want to Replace the playlist..YES. In my case i added one song in the playlist to test it. It synced the one song and also kept all the other songs but it didnt run through every song, so it was really fast. This is what I would do...drag and drop. Also, I shut down my phone and started it again, before I did the sync. I hope this helps

  • Anyone have trouble w/ iTunes 6.0.3 not seeing music in library?

Just got a new computer. Have an external hard drive with all my music. Copied all of the music to the iTunes folder in MyMusic onto new computer, and still have a copy on the same external hard drive. Edit-Preferences-Advanced-General lets you point to the folder...but music in the library folder isn't getting recognized. I've tried pointing iTunes to the local folder and to the library on the external hard drive, but iTunes doesn't see either. The only way a song is making it into iTunes is if I manually go to the file and play it--then iTunes finds it. WAY too much music to do this one by one, and I'd like to keep the playlists I have set up. There are a bunch of posts about this, but I couldn't find anything about iTunes simply not seeing the music in the library. I uninstalled and reinstalled 6.0.3, but no luck.
    Any suggestions? Many thanks.

  • Itunes not seeing all the voice memos on my iPhone 4s

I want to sync all my voice memos from my iPhone 4s to iTunes but when I plug my phone into my macbook air, the section that says voice memos only has about 37 of the 125 voice memos I have on the phone. I also looked in the Music section, which has the same 37 files plus an additional 8. It does not show any of the voice memos from the last 3 years. How can I resolve this? I want to sync but if its is not seeing these files, I'm worried they will get erased.
I've read that I might be able to plug the iPhone into a PC that is running Linux and see the files under a 'recordings' type folder and them maybe transfer them to a thumb drive but I have not tried this yet as I'm hoping there is another way to extract the voice memos that iTunes is not seeing that are clearly on my phone.
I have the new Macbook Air with Yosemite and iTunes 12.1.0.50. Oh and I have not updated my iPhone IOS since 2013 so I'm still on 6.1.3. I plan to update to the most current IOS but I want to make sure my voice memos are saved and don't get hosed in the process

you have to enable that setting on your itunes. It would be under the music tab when you have your phone plugged in.

  • Do not see Music Audio icon on my new IPOD after performing SYNC

    Hi
Just acquired my 1st IPOD. It is a 80 GB Video IPOD. Had no trouble updating music onto ITunes as well as getting them onto the IPOD.
But once everything was complete the only icons I see are
    Photos
    Videos
    Extras
    Settings
    Shuffle Songs
I do not see a Music and then search the collection or artist option anymore. I can play the music from using the Shuffle Songs BUT can't choose the ones I want to by search options that I have seen with other people's IPODs.
My comp is WN XP desktop Dell Dimension 8200. Its a few years old so does not have a USB 2 on it.
Any help or solution will be appreciated.

Switch on your iPod and scroll to Settings and press the centre button. In the next screen scroll to Main Menu and press the centre button. In the next screen Music should appear at the top of the list, press the centre button to toggle the setting to "On". Press and hold Menu on your scroll wheel to go back to the menu screen.

  • Itunes not seeing Ipod and songs not playing Ipod

I have a couple of issues just wanted to know if anyone has run into. I have a couple of computer one running Vista, the other XP, neither see the ipod in itunes, both see it in Windows. That is the first problem. I have also tried all of the suggestions in the troubleshooting section of this support website, except re-installing the operating system. The other issue is that the ipod does not play the music that is currently stored on it, it acts like it is going to and then stops the screen turns black and the apple logo appears, any ideas?

    Hello betel23,
Have you tried resetting the nano yet? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. I would try these more than once just in case.
Otherwise, try forcing the iPod into *Disk Mode* using the instructions in this Apple support document. It may help your iPod mount as an external drive on your system as well as get it to appear in iTunes.

  • ITunes not showing music

I have all my music and itunes library on a Mac server on my home network.  On my laptop, I cna connect to the serber, launch itunes and it shows the music on the server.  However, from my iMac, when i connect to the server and launch iTunes it does not see the music.  Preferences on both machines have been set identically, so both point to the exact same location for the iTunes media folder.
Why is it working on one machine and not the other?
    Thanks

What do you mean by "it kicks me out of it"?
