ITunes not seeing my iPhone over Wifi

I posted this in the iPhone forum, but my guess is that the issue is more related to iTunes.  So I am posting it here as well.
My iPhone doesn't show up in the sidebar of iTunes anymore, even though the iPhone is connected to and works over my wifi network.  I had it set to sync over wifi and open iTunes when the iPhone was connected (e.g., checked these two boxes on the Summary Pane).  But now, the phone doesn't show up at all.  Oddly, my iPad shows and syncs fine.  And, despite not being seen by iTuens, my iPhone is connected to my Wifi network and works fine.
I've tried unchecking and rechecking the box for wifi sync, but it doesn't hold.  The phone will show up after I "reset" the check boxes with the phone attached to a cord and then disconnect the cord.  After doing this, I can shut down iTunes and restart it, and the phone shows as being connected.  Fine and good.  But after I restart my iMac, the phone doesn't show anymore in iTunes.  My guess is that this is an iTunes problem and not a problem with the wifi or the phone.
Any ideas on how to get my phone to stay showing in iTunes?

Your iOS device only has to be powered for wifi backup to iCloud. Synching to iTunes can be done over wifi without the device being powered if both are connected to the same network.
I have spent a lot of time reviewing posts similar to this and experimenting. My finding is that iTunes seems to eventually forget about your iOS devices. This has occurred on both my PC and MacBook, so seems to be a problem with iTunes and not the OS. It is totally at random. Sometimes iTunes will show both my iPhone and iPad, sometimes one or the other, sometimes neither.
I have found that after trying a dozen or more scenarios of powering, cabling, rebooting the computer or the iOS device, turning wifi on and off on the device, etc., that simply plugging the device into the computer seems to refresh connectivity between iTune and the device - for a time, until it fails again. I am using a MacBook with Mountain Lion and iTunes 11 with an iPhone 4S and iPad2 with iOS 6.1.
This is a similar discovery to Tgara above, but I didn't need to change any tick boxes as suggested. I had done this before, of course, in order to synch, but the end result of my experimentation is that the wifi link to iTunes is restored for a time after it is done.
I you cannot get a cabled synch then try the Apple suggestions at: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591

  • ITunes not seeing my iPhone G3

While iPhoto sees my G3 iPhone, the new iTunes does not. It sees my iPod, but not my iPhone. In order to get it to show up, I have to re-install iTunes and restart my machine. Then, my iPhone shows up, but only for that session. As soon as I shut down my machine and start-up again, the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes and I have to start the whole process over again.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I had the same problem on my wife's PB 15" G4 and had to activate her iphone using my 'book pro 17". I tried every suggested solution including deleting all the pref files for itunes and reinstalling the app, but I was still getting the unknown error messages. If I created a new user, itunes would see the phone, pointing to the fact that the problem was software (system/user) and not hardware (usb). I didn't want to try to migrate all the user data from one to the other or do a full erase and install since all the other programs were working properly.
What fixed the problem, was doing an "archive and install" of the system folder using the OSX install DVD and holding the "C" key, then choosing "custom install"> archive and install. It took over 2 hours to complete since you then have to do a software update to the latest versions of OS X, quicktime and itunes. But it now works perfectly when it's hooked up to her PB. Hope this helps others.

  • ITunes not seeing new iPhone today only

I've synced with my iPhone several times, but today I plugged in my iPhone to the USB port and About This Mac sees my iphone, but iTunes does not. I've tried restarting the computer, but no luck.

I have been suffering this exact same problem ever since I got my new iPhone last Tuesday. Options to recover are:
    1. Soft reset of the iPhone (shut it down and restart)
    2. If the cable is in a USB hub, remove it and put it directly into the Mac
    3. Reload iTunes
    4. Hard reset of the iPhone putting the iPhone in recovery mode followed by a Fresh Restore (loses all content)
Of the above the only one that works for me is a hard restore which is a real pain as I have to reload all my content each and every time.
Oddly, I have found that when my iMac gets a spinning ball in iTunes, if I go to another computer and plug in it finds the iPhone fine, which kinda confirms this is an iTunes issue rather than an iPhone hardware issue.
By way of example, Saturday I get a spinning ball in iTunes whenever the iPhone is connected. I try on my macbook and the macbook finds it fine, but I cant sync as my main computer is the iMac.
Sunday night iTunes on the mac finds the iPhone! I spend all night reloading my content.
Monday night iMac cannot see the iPhone again - spinning ball - and after trying 1-3 options without success I do a hard reset into recovery mode followed by a restore and then reload everything yet again.
I've also noted that not all album artwork comes over either, which is irritating but minor compared to this random loss off connection.
Btw I called apple support and the guy I talked to suggested that it could be something to do with the issues around mobileme. Not sure what the connection is exactly but I'm trying to research this angle.

  • Itunes not seeing my iphone 4 pc

I have a Dell XPS running the latest version of itunes and now itunes will not detect my iphone 4. I'd like to sync my phone like I often used to but right now, no dice. Anybody else run into this and any help would be appreciated.

Hi had the same problem with my iphone my problem was the usb driver for apple that was the cause. To be exact the inf file was the culprit .
1.Go to device manager ,under usb serial bus controllers ,apple mobile device driver should be seen,If not do this first connect iphone to computer switch to camera this should start installing driver for the camera of the iphone check the portable devices in Device Manager Apple Iphone should be seen then go down to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers now you should see the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver right click on and click on update driver browse on computer for driver software
Navigate to C:\Program Files\CommonFiles\Apple\MobileDeviceSupport\Drivers\usbaapl.inf.click on this file and you should now have this working.Talk about pulling out hair for this easy fix like others before me reninstalled all the software again again for ditto.I hope this works.Let me know cheers

  • ITunes not seeing new iPhone

Same problem as the others cept I have the most current itunes and updates to the OS. Please help. My phone useless right now

    Hey markatos,
Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to the back of the Mac and not plugged into a hub, monitor, or keyboard. More USB troubleshooting tips available here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1286
If the iPhone still does not show up in iTunes, try uninstalling & reinstalling the Apple Mobile Device Service as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747

  • Itunes not seeing my iphone

When I am at work and hook my iphone up to the computer, itunes sees the device just fine. When I am at home and do the same, it says that it sees that I have a phone but that there are issues and can't connect it properly. If I log into my work vpn and hook up my phone... it is seen as a working device again?
What is the issue here. I don't want to have to be tied to my work network just to sync my iphone!! Thanks.

    Hi,
I believe you are describing the message mentioned in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2818
The article describes a application conflict caused by VPN software. It also provides a few workarounds, like disabling the Internet connection or putting the PC into a selective startup mode.

  • Is there any way to move a file or something from one computer to another that will let the new computer backup my iphone over wifi? I don't want to have to sync my phone to the new computer (my sons computer).

    Hi,
I have my iphone 3GS setup to be able to backup and sync with my computer over wifi. But I want to be able to backup to my sons computer also.
The things is I don't want to have to sync to his computer first to do this. Is there a file or something I can move from my computer that is setup to his that would let his see my iphone over wifi?

If you don't have access to the old computer any longer, '''no'''. Unless you were using something like the Google Toolbar & Google Bookmarks or Xmarks, which would have your bookmarks in an online account that you could access. Firefox doesn't include an online storage feature for personal data, yet. That is coming in a future version.
If you have a friend at your old job maybe they have access to that old PC and they could export your bookmarks to a file and email that file to you.

  • ITunes detects iPhone over WiFi only when it's NOT connected to a power outlet

iTunes detects my iPhone over WiFi only if it's NOT connected to a power outlet, so if I try to sync it fails.

    Hi there argelle1!
I believe you will want to restore this iPod in order to resolve this issue, but there are some other troubleshooting steps you can try before that as well. Those steps can be found in this website:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
Specifically, this is the section that refers to your issue:
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • I installed iTunes 11.1.5 and it's not "seeing" my iphone 5s that's running IOS 7.1.

I installed iTunes 11.1.5 and it's not "seeing" my iphone 5s that's running IOS 7.1. I don't know what to do. Am I the only one having this issue? I would like to add some music to my phone, and make a back up copy of my phone to my computer, but I can't do anything.

Have you tried a couple of USB cables? And are you using the original cable that came with your phone?
The items in this article would be worth trying.
Edit: Just saw you got things sorted. Great news!

  • Itunes not seeing iphone, vista, USB, error 1611

After 8 hours of work and researching everything on the web and including here, I have restored my Iphone.
Background: Itunes loaded on an toshiba laptop running 32 bit Vista.
After plugging in and my iphone sync, I got the usual update message and finally decided to update. Well during the middle of the update the proceess aborted. I went to restore and that aborted.
    1. I tried an new cable and that did not work and started to get a 1611 error.
    2. I took the iphone to apple genius and he recovered the iphone from the broken restore and my phone was working with all data lost.
    3. I plug the iphone back in at home to restore my back up and Itunes would not see my iphone.
    4. I read serveral sites and articles on this site. I found that none of the articles got to the root problem. Several articles on the site need to be updated.
Here are the results of my finding.
    1. After you find that your iphone will not connect to Itunes ( thus it does not show up in the device section of the left panel), you need to go to the device manager in windows (go to start - start search - type "dev" - select device manager.
2 Open up the Universal System Bus section. You should see two things if your system is working properly when you iphone is plug in. One you should see the apple mobile device usb driver. Two you should see your card reader. You need to have both of these. If you dont have either your your system is not going to reconize your IPhone. I had one driver in there that said "unknow device". This was not the iphone in error!!!! As stated in articles on this site. This was the Card reader software by Realtek on my system. Because i did not have a card reader i could not see my Iphone.
    STEPS to fix.
    1. Shut down.
    2. Unplug all USB devices.
    3. Reboot to safe mode.
    4. Delete out all USB drivers.
    5 Shut down.
    6. This is important!!! unplug your power cord.
    7. This is important!!! take out your battery!!
    8. Let it sit for 5 minutes with out any power.
    9. Put in battery and plug in computer.
    10. reboot the machine to normal startup.
    11. Let it add all the USB drivers.
    12. You should now see your USB card reader. If not try it again.
    13. One you have your USB card reader driver. Plug in your Iphone.
    You should be working.
Another helpful hint. If you reload Itunes like I did. Which was a wasted step. Because the Card Reader was the problem and reloading itunes will not fix this. Take a backup of the registry key that has your Iphone name. You will save some time.
Good Luck and I hope this helps someone.

    technabob,
What version of Windows Vista are you running (32-bit or 64-bit)? Please note that 64-bit versions of Vista are not supported as stated in the minimum requirements:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305703
In addition to iTunes and Quicktime, you will also want to remove/reinstall Apple Software Update and Apple Mobile Device Support as listed in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
If you are still having issues, you may want to test the iPhone in a new user, or use MSCONFIG to see if there is any software that might be conflicting with the iPhone. For more information on using MSCONFIG, see this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305415
    Good luck,

  • Why doesn't iTunes 11.0.4 not see my iPhone 6.1.3?

I have the iPhone 4 running on iOS 6.1.3, my iPhoto sees the phone as a digital camera. iTunes how ever does not see my iPhone so that I can sync them together, I've had my phone for about 2 months and have my tech friends look into this and tried everything but reformatting my MacBook Pro. Does anyone know how I can get my iPhone to set up as a new phone on my laptop or to at least get iTunes to see my phone? Please help.

  • Itunes 9.2 does not see my iphone 3GS

I have now reinstalled itunes 9.2 3 times in order to download the new software verion for my iphon. First it kep saying there were files missing so I reinstalled and reinstalled. Now I can see my library in itunes but it will not see my iphone, nor will it charge the phone. I have used different USB ports and iphone connectors all to no avail. Can anyone help please?

The same thing happened to me and it took me days to figure it out. Check the USB drivers. I noticed after updating/uninstalling/re-installing itunes 9.2, windows would update the latest drivers to my iphone when I connect it for the first time. It did this every time. Windows kept giving it a generic camera driver. Although it recognized it as an Apple iPhone, make sure it finds this driver: usaapl found in the c:\program files\common files\apple\mobile device\drivers folder (Windows Vista 64-bit)
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538 gives you instructions on how to fix this.

  • ITunes not seeing iPhone. Windows 7

I'm wondering if anybody can help with the following.
I'm running Win7 Home 32-bit with all of the latest updates and also have the latest version of iTunes installed. I'm trying to connect an iPhone to my PC, via iTunes, but it is not recognised by iTunes, and I keep getting an error saying that it cannot read the iPhone.
However, the iPhone does appear in Windows Explorer (apparently as a camera, as I can read the DCIM file and look at the photos there), but as the iPhone is not jailbroken I cannot see any other files. The iphone is running iOS5.
From searching online, it appears that the problem may be that Windows thinks it is a camera, and has atatched a particular driver to it (an MTP driver). Others also suggest that I need to have the phone installed with a different driver (usbappl).(As suggested in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538)
If I uninstall the phone or try and automatically update the driver then it says that there is no better driver.
I have also tried to specifically update it with the usbappl driver (by updaing the driver and using the "have disk" option and then browsing to where the usbappl driver is installed). In this case I get an error saying that "the folder specified doesn't contain a compatible driver for your device).
Can anybody suggest how I can get Windows to update with the correct driver, or some other way of getting iTunes to see the iPhone.
    Many thanks for your help.

If you haven't already done so, work through the entire troubleshooting steps on http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538, including 1-6 at the bottom.  Often restarting the AMDS (step 3) will be necessary.  If all else fails, uninstall iTunes and all of its components as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 and reinstall iTunes.
