ITunes not seeing the library on a shared drive

Greetings,
I recently upgraded to iTunes 11. I upgraded the application on 3 computers. All computers (2 running Snow Leopard and one running Lion) have been authorized for iTunes and access a networked library. The upgrade was successful and and all computers "see" the correct shared library.
My problem is with the unit running Lion. That computer has 2 users, myself and my wife. I generally do not use the computer, but I set up all the computers in the home, so I automatically create an account for myself. Early on I created and configured my wife's account to use iTunes.
Recently, (after upgrading) I decided to configure iTunes for my account on that computer. (My regular computer is older and I need to start using the iPhoto application on her computer, mine has run out of space.) When I tried to run the new iTunes, my account would not "see" the iTunes library.
Do I need to authorize (to use iTunes) this account, even though my wife's account on this machine was authorized awhile ago?
Why would my account library be different from her account library (I have confirmed that the library file path is the same.)
Ultimately I want to be able to use my wife's (newer) computer to sync our (3) iPads. Right now, under my account I am unable to do that.
Any suggestions?

I have put the library on an external drive connected by usb to my wireless router.
what exactly have you put on the external ? the entire iTunes folder or just the iTunes music (or media) folder ?
On my iMac I can select the itunes folder on the drive in itunes advanced preferences and my music shows up in the itunes window an I can play it. But on my MacbookPro although I can select the folder, nothing shows up in the itunes window.
this leads me to believe that you consolidated the iMac's library to the external but kept the library files local. pointing iTunes media folder location to a new spot tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, but not where the current content is.
what you need to do is to copy the entire iTunes folder to the external, then (on each Mac) launch iTunes while holding the option(⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
note only one Mac at a time can access the library !

  • HT1751 I have moved my library from an external hard drive into my laptop music file but I am not able to open i-tunes when holding down the shift key as advised in step 4 and thus not seeing the library option box - any tips please??

I have moved my itunes library from old computer to portable hard drive and then on, into new laptop, in music file. However I am then unable to open I-Tunes when holding down the shift button as directed in step 4 - this means I am not seeing the library choice box and cannot synch the tunes into ITunes library - any tips please?........Alan

Close iTunes. Click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. If iTunes opens normally, close it,  and try again.

  • ITunes not seeing music library on external drive?

I recently moved my iTunes to an external hard drive. I read the instructions on the apple support site on how to do everything. It said, down at the bottom of the article, that the hard drive must be opened before you launch iTunes in order for iTunes to see the library. Although I did everything instructed my iTunes, when launched, is not seeing any of the files that are on my external hard drive. They are still on the hard drive and I am scared to do anything more without some help for fear I may lose the data on my hard drive. Help!!

If you copied the music to the external drive yourself, you did not do it correctly.
Do you see any music when you open iTunes?

  • T450S: After upgrading main drive to SSD drive, do not see the second pre-installed SSD drive

Hello gurus, I replaced the HD with Samsung 500GB SSD, and have been loving it.  However, ever since I did that, I do not see the 2nd pre-installed 15GB SANDISK SSD Drive anymore in the explorer.    Anyone know what I can do to make the second drive be recognizable by the computer?   This is potentially a related problem but I also have trouble installing Windows 10, because it says it can't find a partition.  Can I use the second SSD drive as the partition for the install?

This smaller SSD is designed to use software and be a cache drive. It wouldn't show in File Explorer. You can check Device Manager.

  • Itunes not "seeing" the music...

I'm using itunes on a PC with Vista Home Premium 32 (no jokes please!) I've got my music on a Seagate Freeagent Go external hard drive. I'll start itunes (yes, I've got the drive connected), I'll go to play a song/album/whatever, and nothing happens. The album artwork will appear in the now playing window, the song name is at the top of the screen but there's no sound and the track time isn't advancing. Is there anybody out there who can tell me what's going on here? Sometimes I'll have to re-start itunes 3 or 4 times before it'll work properly. Please help!

It might be worth trying a dxdiag to see if that finds anything amiss, michael.
Go Start > Run. In your Run, type dxdiag and hit enter.
Work through the troubleshooting tabs. Does dxdiag report any problems?

  • How do I view a movie I rented and downloaded to my computer on my apple TV. The ATV is not seeing the rented movie in my shared itunes library? I can't seem to transfer the rental to the ATV from the computer!

How do I view a movie I rented and downloaded to my computer on my apple TV. The ATV is not seeing the rented movie in my shared itunes library? I can't seem to transfer the rental to the ATV from the computer!

    Dear friends,
Thank you for responding to my problem so promptly. Frankly, I did not expect to hear from people so soon! The fact is that as soon as I posted the question, I was shown a number of similar queries and managed to find the answer. I have to say it's not intuitive! I have an apple TV original version. Apparently I had the ATV on streaming and not syncing. Streaming does not allow you to stream a rental from your computer whereas you can sync and transfer the rental from the computer!
    Thanks again.

  • When I use Home sharing, I can see the library I want to copy, but when I highlight the library, the import button does not show up. Also, it will not let me drop and drag. How do I get music from one computer to the other computer?

When I use Home Sharing, I can see the library I want to copy under Shared, but I can't get it save on the computer under the regular library. I go to edit and "select all" but there is no import button that is in the right hand corner. Also, it will not let me click and drag the music. How do I get it from one computer to the other?

Since both computers are connected via the network, you could simply copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from one computer to another via the network.
If both computers are running Windows, use the Easy File Transfer Utility built into Windows to move iTunes and all other user media/data.

  • So, I have created my home sharing from my base computer to my laptop. On my lap top I see the tab for home sharing but it will not let me connect to my computer to share my music over. I have done everything iTunes has told me to but it still won't work.

I got some more info that may help.
I put a cd on my laptop, and was able to share it to my computer... So the problem is only from my computer to my laptop. I tried the firewall thing and it did not help. I read the rest of the trouble shooting page, and nothing else applies. iTunes is an execption and already was. I can not think of anything else being my problem. Do you think I should re-install iTunes or would that be a waste of time? At this point I am about to just call Apple for some help because I am getting to stressed over this.
    Thanks

To connect my ipod to itunes with windows 8 not see the option to add to add songs from itunes library. As I can solve this?

Since you can only sync your iPod with one computer at a time, you'll need to copy the contents currently on your iPod to your new iTunes library first.  See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to accomplish this task.

  • I can see the library on the 2nd computer using home sharing but the library will not load

I have home sharing on both of the computers, I see the library on the machine I was to bring it to but when I select it says loading but then doesn't ever bring in all the music.

I finally got the computer to download the library, 6800 songs. I had to turn off my mcafee real time scan & firewall for 15 minutes on both machines. I them hit import and for the last day and a half it was copy the library to my laptop I thought. I had one pop up at the very end that said it couldn't download one song which wasn't a big deal so I thought I answered it correctly that it was fine to skip it. It was done copying them but they aren't on the laptop, so I am now importing them again what do you suggest I do after it finishes importing this time? Again I wasn't thinking and did a select all instead of just one album but it is going much faster so I believe the songs must be on my laptop.

  • Sharing iTunes Libraries - does the library location matter?

    (Reposting to correct section...)
I have iTunes installed on several (Windows) machines on my local network and have enabled sharing for each of them.
One of them (the one with the main library, alas) doesn't appear and doesn't see the others. It seems that the problem may be that the music library on this machine is not in the default location (c:\documents and settings\username\My Documents/My Music/iTunes (etc). That's the only substantive difference among the machines and installations, so when I set up a new machine, I tried putting the iTunes library somewhere else. When I did that, I couldn't see any other shared libraries and no other machines could see this new one. But when I changed that library to the "standard" location, it was visible and that machine could see the other libraries.
Can anyone confirm if this is the case or if there is something else I should be looking at? I'd rather not move the library, but I will if necessary. Seems like a strange restriction.

Sorry, didn't notice I had posted in the wrong section. Will repost. In reply to the 2nd reply, I'm reasonably certain there aren't any networking or firewall issues because all these machines are on my local net behind my hardware router. All the other networking I do among the among the machines works with no problems. The only IP port forwarding I do is from the router inbound so shouldn't effect communication among the machines (though as far as I know I'm not using any ports that iTunes uses).

  • ITunes shows files adding--but then they're not in the library

I have all the music from my old computer & old iTunes in a "Songs" folder on my desktop (courtesy of YamiPod). Per the instructions, I went to "Add Folder to Library" in iTunes and selected the Songs folder, and iTunes appeared to copy all the files into the library. But then, when the process was over, I discovered that many, many albums are nowhere to be found in the library, and some of the albums that are there don't even include all the songs. I've checked the Songs folder--and the iTunes Music folder in the My Music folder--and both folders include all the missing songs and albums. I've retried adding each of these folders to the library again, and again, I've watched iTunes goes through the whole process of adding them only to see yet again that when all is done, they're not in the library.
    Advice, anyone?
Update: I take part of this back. My iTunes Music folder *does not* show all the missing albums. It shows some that the library doesn't (but that my original Songs folder does) but not all. I'm so confused. And when I try to just add individual song files, I encounter the same problem. I select the song(s) and select "Open," but though I receive no error messages, the song is not added to the library.
    Thanks,
    Stephanie

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download from the store. If you don't have it on your computer (audiobooks go into the Books part of your iTunes library) nor on a backup, then if it's still in the store you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
