ITunes not showing Nano

We have a brand new MacBook Pro and a first gen nano. When we plug the nano in the Finder reads it as a drive but it does not show in iTunes. We had been using it with a previous gen unibody MBP (which was stolen) and it worked fine. We have tried two different cables to no avail. I tried it on a borrowed Dull D610 and iTunes recognized it right off the bat and wanted to reformat it.
Any ideas why iTunes on the new MBP will not bring the nano up?

Unless you have music on it that isn't backed up, you might want to try a restore.

  • Why does the iTunes not show "Photos"

Why does the new iTunes not show "Photos" after it is synced, and why does iCloud not show Photos also?

Ralph9430 offers a good suggestion.  But you may need to do this before taking his advice:
Check in iPhoto's Preferences (which you can open from the iPhoto menu).  Look in General, and make sure "Connecting Camera Opens" is set to "Image Capture").
If it is set to "iPhoto", you won't be able to get to Image Capture easily.

  • Solution!!! (for iTunes not recognizing Nano)

I've written this as a reply to the thread below as well - but as it seems more than just our friend below has this problem I've also posted this as a separate post
    Hi everybody,
I have - like many of you, suffered through this frustrating process of Windows recognizing the Nano and yet iTunes not recognizing it, and after some research I think I may have found a solution (perhaps not THE solution).
Just so you are aware, I just want to warn you that I'm not some computer science expert or anything, and this is a pretty old article (written May 2006, http://pluralsight.com/blogs/keith/archive/2006/05/26/25476.aspx), BUT I think this works on iTunes 7.0 because it is now detecting my nano. Basically I think what the problem is that the Nano is supposed to be formatted as FAT32 to work with iTunes but for many of us outdated Nano users the Nano is still formatted as FAT.
So like the blog author has written, we need to go and run the Windows disk management tool (if you are not a computer person like I really am not, just go to Windows help and search "disk management" and it'll give you a link that brings you directly there). The disk management tool will probably show the C drive and then the iPod as well as any extraneous hardware. RIGHT CLICK on the iPod (it should be there since all of you are saying that XP recognizes it), format it to FAT32 (it will warn you that info on your ipod may be erased, but this doesn't matter since it's just info on your ipod and your music is on your C drive anyway). I didn't re-run the iPod updater like the blogger did (especially since the iPod updater is apparently included in iTunes 7.0 now and the latest one, which I believe is iPod updater 6-28-06..is now outdated and invalid)...but the next time I ran iTunes, it recognized the iPod!!!!!! HORRAY
    So in simple instruction form,
    - Open Windows disk management window (Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management)
    - Once you have this window open, click on Disk Management (under Storage)
    - If like you say, your XP recognizes your iPod (but iTunes doesn't), then your iPod should be listed under that window along with your C drive (and maybe others). Under File System, it might say FAT.
    - If it does, RIGHT CLICK your iPOD and choose Format
    - Change the Format from FAT to FAT32. (It will warn you that everything will be erased but that's ok)
Btw I also restored the nano (to factory settings).
I hope this helps...was glad to find there were other people suffering through the same thing. Misery loves company! Please let me know if it worked for you and if you have questions

I too am a victim of upgrading to iTunes 7.0 I reformatted my nano per instructions, even though it already was FAT32. I reset the nano as well, still no joy. What's interesting is that if I restart the computer with the nano plugged in, it recognizes it and tells me that I need to update to 1.2. As soon as I do this, however, it says that it's updating, but the ipod goes from 'do not disconnect' to the normal menu. iTunes says it’s updating, but it never does. I need to kill the process through task manager to get it to quit.
Additionally, if I choose not to update, the nano shows up in iTunes just fine and I can move songs to the nano. (I have it set to manually update the nano as I have more songs in my library than the nano can hold.)
However, as soon as I ‘eject’ the nano, reconnecting it does not show the nano, whether I stay in iTunes or close iTunes and then unplug and plug in the nano. The nano shows ‘do not disconnect’, and windows sees the nano, but still no joy in iTunes.
FYI, I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the software and tried all the directions at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Which I was directed to when doing the diagnostics on the iPod through iTunes.
This is a total crock. Some upgrade.

  • ITunes not showing iPod as connected

I have been trying to sync my iPod for several hours, but iTunes isn't showing that any devices are connected.
I have tried every USB port on my computer, and am getting the same result. I also checked the 'My Computer' section of the computer and it does not show anything connected.
And, if it helps, I have a Second Generation iPod Nano.

If your computer meets all minimum system requirements, and you've done all the listed troubleshooting steps in the article, then you should go ahead and set up a dispatch for the iPod. You can do that at the following website.

  • ITunes not showing songs that are on the iPod Touch

I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation.
    I use iTunes 11.0.
I usually connect my iPod Touch to iTunes and play songs from there because I do not put songs in my itunes library.
I was doing this as usual and today when I connected my iPod Touch to iTunes, songs did not show up on the music tab of "On This iPod".
Just the previous day, I opened iTunes and there were all my songs.
Today, iTunes does not show any of my downloaded songs that were not bought from the iTunes Store.
The iTunes Capacity Bar shows that I have songs on my iPod Touch.
But when clicking on the iPod and going under the music tab in "On This iPod", there is no music other than a few songs, which were purchased from the iTunes Store itself.
I also tried third party software just today to check if I can get the songs off my iPod.
I tried using SharePod and it did not detect any songs, not even the purchased songs from iTunes.
There are songs on the iPod Touch only. I can play all the songs from the iPod Touch just fine.
They are simply just not showing up on iTunes.
How do I get iTunes to show the songs on my iPod Touch? The capacity bar says there are songs.
I tried SharePod a few times long before this happened, and it showed the songs on the iPod Touch.
I don't understand why all of a sudden the songs all disappeared from iTunes itself only.
(I would say this is similar to other issues where iTunes DOES show songs while the iPod itself DOES NOT. Mine is the opposite.)
Thank you for the help in advance.

I tried backing up the iPod Touch.
Now all the songs on the iPod Touch (except for the purchased ones) are turned to blank names and are skipped.
There is no name for each song or artwork, they all are called 'unknown'.
Only the purchased songs are left unharmed. Everything else is corrupted now.

  • Movies in Itunes not showing up on Apple TV

I am finding that some movies which I have added to Itunes and play fine on my Mac, do not appear on my Apple TV.  They are mpeg4 with the H.264 codec, which is what all my videos are.  I have tried rebooting the ATV and also restarting Itunes on my Mac, but still the same thing.  I have a category which contains 7 items, but only 5 of them appear on the ATV.  It's driving me a bit crazy!  Hope someone has an idea about what to do.
    Thanks!

RogerOut makes some good points and this feels to me like a ham fisted attempt by Apple to take control of my media in a way that I don't want.  The stuff it is choosing to call "home movie" is 100% legit movies, but not ones I bought through the itunes store.  So I load a movie and then it mysteriously does not show up in my Apple TV because it has defaulted to "home movie".
What I still fail to understand is what the heck is the purpose of this apart from annoying users who's stuff now does not appear on ATV without explanation or warning.  So glad to have this forum to help me, but why should I have to do this to figure out how to overcome a stupid thing that Itunes is doing to my movie (it is a movie!)?
As I say though, what possible benefit is it for a users media to be labelled in this way and anyway, why does calling it a home movie make it unreadable in ATV?

  • IPod Classic no music, freezing iTunes, not showing up, HELP????

I have a used iPod Classic 120GB. I bought it off my friend. I took it home and added my files (about 5,000 songs and 13 videos) to his stuff (about 6,000 songs) and ended up with it being about half full. I let it sync, then ejected and disconnected. But it said there was nothing on it. I went back and reconnected it to my iTunes. The iTunes froze, and I couldnt access the iPod in anyway. I disconnected it, and when I did it unfroze everything, and popped up in iTunes, saying that the iPod was missing.
I checked the iPod's "About" section and it said that it had 56GB of "Other". I took it back to my friend and he said he deleted the folder with everything in it. It is empty now except for 1.2 GB of who knows what, but still freezing my system and not showing up.
I have tried restarting it, and putting it into disk mode. Nothing worked.

HI, i am having the same issue with my ipod. Can you please tell me what you mean by putting on "disk mode" and deleting the files? Thanks
First let's make sure the drive is physically OK...
*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

Assuming you've ruled out a physical problem with the iPod's drive we can now move on to check for logical problems...
    *Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Select+Menu on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Select+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore. It might also pay to check the status of the source drive containing your media, particularly if no errors were found on the iPod.
And if that still doesn't help try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes from restoring it.
Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. I have found that lots of large or complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • ITunes not showing content on iOS devices

So I have an iPhone 4 and an iPad, both running iOS 4.2.1 under iTunes version 10.1.1. For some reason, whenever I click any of the content tabs under each device (Music, Books, Videos, etc.), iTunes shows that there is nothing on the device even though I can clearly play and view the content on the device itself. I know there have been some issues with 4.2.1 and content not showing up on the device, but has there been any sort of fix on content not being viewable through iTunes? Thanks!

Also note, this isn't just movies... it happens with music, TV shows, and books as well.  The remote devices can see and play them, but it will not show up in the local iTunes list.
Additionally, in the "shared" libraries section for iTunes on other computers, the items also do not show up in that list.

  • HELP- video bought on itunes not showing up in ipod

i bought the first part of a two part episode of monk off itunes today and, for some reason, part one is not showing up on my ipod. part two is on there and you can play it and it works just fine and everything, but for some reason part one does not show up on there at all. is there some reason why this is so?

Try manually draging the video to your ipod. If it is on your ipod delete it and transfer it back onto your ipod. Try resetting your ipod by holding the middle button and the menu button for 10 seconds. Also try checking your ipod video settings to make sure that the settings are the way you want it.

  • ITunes not showing app updates from iPhone

I did some searches and found some people that have had similar, but not exactly the same problem.
My iPhone 3GS shows that I have four apps that need updating. I don't like to use my data plan for updates if I don't have to, so I prefer to update via iTunes. The Problem is that when I go to iTunes, it does not show that these updates are available.
    Phone Software Version 4.3.3
    iTunes Version 10.3.1.55
All the apps that have updates (according to the iPhone) are set to sync when connected to iTunes, but syncing them does not get the updates to show up in iTunes.
If i go to the iTunes store through iTunes to try and re-download them, it already says "downloaded" and so I can't re-download them to get the newer version.
If anyone knows where I can find the answer to this, please provide a link. I'm don't mind reading...I just had no success when I was searching myself.

I have exactly the same problem.  I think it started some time ago (perhaps a couple of month).  Prior to that, I'll go to iTunes and get the apps again.   Now it says 'downloaded' but WHERE??????

  • ITunes not showing Summary page

After a successful download of iTunes 8.2, I now have a relatively minor issue. Whenever I connect my Classic to sync, iTunes no longer shows the "Summary page." I'm sure there's a way to get to that "view," however, I don't seem to be able to find it. While my downloads have all been successful, I'm not able to make choices about manually syncing, etc while my iPod is connected. I have not noticed any other problems with the download, but it's still early days.

Hi - I started out with a worse problem, that my iPhone (original model 8GB) would not sync after I downloaded iTunes 8.2 to my 2-year-old MacBookPro running 10.4.11. I got excellent help from suggestions in the thread at:
"IPhone not found by Mac or iTunes"
After running the fix there, my iPhone synched, but DID NOT SHOW THE Summary Page. I went to the regular iTunes Help menu, opened the Help file, and it said to "click on the iPhone icon" in the left side tool bar. I did, and the Summary Page opened and have not had any more problems since. Don't know if this simple fix works for everyone, but sure worked for me!
