ITunes not writing tag info to file

Recently iTunes hasn't been writing the tag info to the mp3 files when I import a new cd. I've never had a problem with this until recently.
I'm using iTunes 6.0.5 on a Intel Mini 1.66 with OS 10.4.6. When I insert a new disc it shows the proper track, artist, album, etc info. It titles the tracks correctly and puts them in my iTunes library correctly. However, when I check the tag info in MediaRage it shows nothing! I don't think it's a problem with MediaRage because I tried to import the cds on my Powerbook and they import fine.
I discovered this when I recently needed to reformat my music harddrive. When I copied the files back into iTunes a bunch of tracks came up as unknown artist and album. When I checked them furhter I found they were the last 6 or 7 cds I had imported. So they went into iTunes initially with the correct info, but the tag info hadn't been written, so when I reimported them iTunes organized them into the unknown folder.
I've been able to work around this by using the convert id3 tags command immediately after importing a new cd. Then all the info shows up correctly in MediaRage. But I shouldn't have to do this extra step! I've updated to the latest version of iTunes in case the last version was corrupted somehow. That didn't help. I've looked for the iTunes preferences file but can't find it.
So sorry for the long ramble but I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution or even anyone else mentioning this problem.
HELP!

G4 Titanium Powerbook, Intel Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ext WD 320gb

It's difficult to say what's causing this problem, although at this moment in time there still seem to be a lot of bugs with various software when running on Intel-based Macs.
Unfortunately, for some odd reason, iTunes writes ID3 v. 2.2 tags by default rather than the more acceptable v. 2.3 (or even 2.4). You might try ripping your CDs with Max using the provided (LAME) MP3 encoder. You should get more accurate rips to start with (using the paranoia ripper), and the highest qualtiy MP3s using the superior LAME encoder. Your files will have ID3 v. 2.4 tags written to them. You can also configure Max, in its preferences, to add files directly to your iTunes library upon encoding for perfect integration with iTunes. Hopefully this will work well for you and your files will retain their metadata.

  • PSE5 not writing tags to photo files

Having invested hours, weeks, and months in the process of tagging my many thousands of family photographs within PSE5, I am dismayed to find that having taken the manual step of writing the tags to the files, that only some of them have indeed done so. Quite a few of my photo files are showing up in Windows Explorer with the tags I have given them safely in place - great. However, twice as many appear to not be tagged at all. Can anyone explain to me what has happened and how I can rectify it, please? The prospect of having to tag them all again leaves me wanting to go and stick my head in a blender.
A second problem is that, inexplicably, PSE5 recently started creating duplicate photo files with a "edTMP" suffix - they recreate the exact same file with the exact same file size. The only difference is that, where tags have been saved to a photo, the "edTMP" version does not include the tags. So, I just delete these files, but with the number that PSE is creating, it is a very time consuming job. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I can stop it, please?
Many, many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me rectify these really maddening issues. Thanks! And best wishes.

First problem - It might be possible that while using 'Write keyword tag and properties info to photos' option, Organizer may have shown some errors (saying like 'Skipping invalid files'). As a result write operation may not be applied on some files. This may happen if there are some permissions issues with images. Please check that all your files are writable.
Second option - This is an extension of first problem. Whenever Organizer fails to do any file operation (in your case 'Write keyword tag..' option), it creates a temp file. There is no way of deleting these files from withing Organizer (you need to delete them manually).

  • *** is up with itunes not updating my info??

*** is up with itunes not updating my info. the problem I am still having after 3 weeks is I can not update my credit card/debit card info because itunes says my billing information does not match my bank records. I know this is lunacy because the info I put in is completely correct, i even contacted my bank 3 times to make sure they had my info correct. so obviously something is completely ******** with itunes/iphone in which I cant update my info. **** I cant even download a free app, because it says my info has changed, and I need to change it. when i do, it gives me that stupid message about my info not matching my bank records. Something needs to be done asap.

does itunes support ever respond to these forums??
Since these are user-to-user forums, no they don't.

  • ITunes not writing valid XML file

I've been having trouble with my iTunes library being seen by anything other than itunes (iPhoto, iLike etc) and the problem is with the XML file. If i try to open the xml file in BBEdit i get an error that says:
    *Incorrectly formed UTF-8*
The UTF-8 File "iTunes Music Library.xml" is damaged or
incorrectly formed; please proceed with caution.
So I dump it and force iTunes to create a fresh copy, but that has the same problems.
If I put an old copy of the XML file (from a few months back) into the iTunes folder, then all the other iApps can see an iTunes library and interact with it, but as soon as iTunes updates the file it becomes unusable again.
    The XML file is 30.5MB.
Does anyone have even the slightest idea why iTunes is producing an unusable XML file all the time? Could it be something to do with the size of the file? Or could it be something that's appeared in my library over the past few months that's messing up the xml file?
Any and all comments/suggestion would be greatly appreciated as i'm running out of hair to pull out

Ok, I ran the rest through my parser, and there is (only) one other broken spot. It's on "Donde Liesta Usc (La Boheme)" Also the file location tag. (Shown as "where" in the summary tab of the info window in iTunes.) Deleting and re-adding this track as well as "Need You Tonight" should cause iTunes to correct those location tags and completely solve the problem by eliminating the character encodings that are illegal for utf-8. Both tracks should then also become playable again.

  • Bridge CS3 not writing metadata to JPEG files

For the last couple of months (without my noticing until a couple days ago) all JPEG files that I have edited using Bridge CS3 (on Windows XP) do not have the metadata built into the file. Here are the symptoms: use "File Info" to edit the metadata for a JPEG file (i.e. add a title, description, copyright info, etc.), all appears normal, but if you do any of the following, the metadata you entered disappears:
    - duplicate (the metadata does not exist in the duplicate file)
    - move or copy to another folder
    - open in Photoshop or any other software that can read metadata (File Info shows none of the metadata you entered)
    - rebuild the cache for the folder
Strangely, the metadata still appears with the file when you look at it in Bridge as long as you don't do any of the above.
This is really awful as I've put a lot of time into entering this metadata for hundreds of files. Older files (pre-Nov 08) don't have this problem and the metadata is "sticky" and doesn't get deleted. So, somehow my Bridge CS3 got corrupted along the way.
Has anyone experienced this and more importantly -- do you have a solution? I've tried reseting all Bridge settings (but that of course purged the cache and deleted all my metadata.)

    Hey,
There are various date/time fields shown in properties panel in Organizer. The dates mentioned in general section are read from OS whereas the dates in EXIF field are read from image's EXIF data. In EXIF data there are three date/time fields-
    1. Date time- This date/time info shows date modified of EXIF properties. So when you are writing a tag into imags's IPTC, you are doing some change in EXIF data. Hence this date should change to date when you are writing a tag into IPTC.
    2. Date time original - Represents date time when a image was shoot.
    3. Date digitized - Represents the date when the image was digitized (in digital camers there is hardly some delay between an image is shoot and it is digitized. So this field is always same as date original).
So, in your scenario, Date time in EXIF should change whenever you are writing any tag into its IPTC.
Please let me know if you need more info on it.

  • When will iTunes not have ******** tag support?

I just hit this problem today of iTunes/ipod not liking tag headers on certain MP3s and just choking on them and not playing. After digging around some I found out that iTunes uses some outdated tag support whcih causes problems. When will apple fix this? I mean my winamp/WMP can play the files just fine, but in itunes, it doesn't even register in the playlist/library and if its alerady there, it just doesn't play. Can we fix this sometime apple?

Whenever the owner of the distribution rights of those films reach an agreement with Apple that allows them to sell them.

  • ITunes not importing all my music files

My little brother was using my laptop and "unintentionally" uninstalled itunes. Well, he then "unintentionally" deleted the file that itunes used for my library.
Luckily, he didnt actually delete any of my actual music on my hard drive. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and installed it. I went to import my music from my hard drive. It went without a hitch (or so it seemed). As I was looking at music to put on my ipod nano, i noticed that several tracks from a Pimsleur foreign language learning CDs were not in my itunes (I took a basic japanese course for a trip I was taking). Tracks 1, 2, 9 and 10 were there, but 3 - 8 were absent. So I went ahead and tried to import them by importing a file. It didnt work,I tried to import the entire folder again, it didnt work.
My previous iTunes library had no trouble recognizing these CD tracks. All of my music is in MP3 format, btw just to clear up anyone thinking incompatibility issues. What can I check? What can I change? I have yet to uninstall iTunes to see if that would fix this issue. Anything I can try in the mean time?

    CasperGemini wrote:
Can you right-click on the file, and choose Open With > iTunes?
If this doesn't work, I'd suggest re-importing the original CD into iTunes (or at least the tracks that are not working correctly).
    CG
I did as you asked and tried to play it in Itunes. It worked. It played just fine. I tried to import it again. This time it imported them, but instead of importing them correctly, it doesnt have any of the tag information but a name, disc number and track number. No artist, composer, genre, etc.
The only thing I can think that is different is that I "upgraded" to the new version of iTunes instead of keeping the old version. I checked my other program, media monkey, they show up in it just fine, minus the genre. I think there is a problem with iTunes.
    Anyone else have this problem?

  • Itunes not opening - error message that file is locked....

    Hi,
itunes message - 'library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.'
I've tried everything i can find online to repair this issue, but itunes wont open still. I saw a message for this exact message in 2006 about moving itune lib to desktop and then back into itunes folder, but that hasn't worked. Please help.

    Might fix your problem:
Through Finder navigate to your users directory
    Select the folder "Music"
    Press CMD-i
An info windows will pop up
Scroll down to the very bottom
If necessary expand "Sharing & Permissions"
Is your username listed with Privilege "Read & Write"?
Tick the little lock at bottom right - enter your PW
    If necessary correct your privileges
In any case press the little gearwheel - "Apply to enclosed items ..."
    ok
    reboot

  • ITunes not opens...msi file mentioned

I can't open iTunes anymore. I've tried unstalling the program (though I can't uninstall every single file). When I download a new installer and try to reinstall, an error box pops up mentioning I should try to find a folder with the iTunes.msi file in it. I'm not sure what to do. I'm not entirely computer illiterate, but I'm definitely over my head on this one, and hope someone knowledgeable here can help.

b noir,  we have no more news updates on how you all are doing down in Christs Church many weeks after the earth quakes? Hope all is getting back to the way you were before it hit?
Sadly not ... a lot of major damage still to be sorted out, and the smaller aftershocks from the Port-Hills/Banks-Peninsula locations and the new seam we seem to have popped directly under the Eastern suburbs continue to contribute to the settlement and liquefaction troubles. It's difficult to keep the roads in good repair, for example, when after an aftershock (or just overnight) the ground sinks under the tarmac, or the concrete things around the manholes float up a bit. Large areas of the central city still cordoned off. (There's a few big buildings tilting and so forth that need to be taken down.)
You can track the aftershocks here:

  • Writing tags to actual file- any disadvatage to doing this?

    I have PSE 6,
I see I can actual write the tags to the image file, any reason not to do this, can this be done automatically or do you have to manual do each time ?
    thnaks
    Mike

You have to give the command File > Write Keyword Tag every time.  There are no disadvantages to doing this, other than that the command is buggy.  Having the tags (and date/time, captions, notes, star rating, and map locations) written to the file's metadata makes it easier to share this information with other programs and provides a partial fall back if your catalog gets corrupted and you don't have adequate backups.
For a list of the problems with Write Keyword Tags, see the last paragraph of the section "Writing File Metadata" in this page:

  • ITunes not finding all my music files.

My itunes says it cannot find alot of my music files yet they are in the folder specified in my Itunes preferences iTunes Music Folder Location.
How can I get iTunes to confirm the location and correct this?
On a side note I find that my iTunes changes the location specified for the "iTunes Music Folder Location" from time to time. Why would this be happening?
    I am using iTunes 8.1 (50)

    Thanks for the quick response.
Yes the folder is located on an external drive so it could be that it was not turned on at some point. That being said how do I get it corrected in iTunes? Is there an quick way to fix this? How do I get rid of the ! in iTunes?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

  • ITunes Not Syncing Album Info

An album I had in my iTunes library had the wrong year in it so it was not in the correct order chronologically so I changed the album release year in this case from 2008 to 1994. However despite it changing in iTunes OK when it syncs over to my phone it reverts to 2008 on my phone but stays as 1994 on my iTunes library.
Any ideas? it is driving me mad!

OK, the iPod show up in Windows Explorer when you plug it in - and it never shows up in iTunes?
Have you tried anything from this document - iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes?

You can always redirect the output an exe to a file like so (even from cmd.exe):
    powershell c:\test.ps1 > c:\test.log
Within PowerShell, you can also redirect individual commands to file
but in those cases you probably want to append to the log file rather
    than overwrite it e.g.:
    $logFile = 'c:\temp\test.log'
