  • Why does iTunes sometimes refuse to burn a 78:30 playlist?!?

Most of the time iTunes 6 will burn a 79:30 playlist to an 80-minute CD-R with no fuss. (That's a real 79:30 or 79:40 or even 79:55, not the list of times as iTunes displays them to the whole second. I monitor the time precisely using the Info/Options panel for each track.)
But once in a while, iTunes decides a playlist is too long even when it's not, like when it is really 78:30. This happens erratically. But when it does continue to give me this message, no amount of chopping time off each track seems to matter. (I use Peak to edit out "dead air" at the end. Doing this to 20 tracks can cut over a minute from the total time of a playlist.) It will only burn to one CD if I remove a whole track.
I just tested one case where it burned 75:50 but not the last track, which was another 2:43. I rebuilt the playlist one track at a time with a new name, but no cigar. I really want this particular 78:30 playlist on one CD. Can anyone help with this?

I would like at once to thank you for making this point again and also to say that it is just not relevant to the problem I'm having. However much space TAO takes up, at the end of the day it's accountable in the total time on the CD. I am not having a problem with iTunes failing to accept a playlist near the limit of time. When the playlist plus TAO space plus anything else adds up to under 80 minutes, iTunes will burn it.
My problem comes when I begin with a playlist of specific tracks that total a few seconds more than 80 minutes. Not incidentally, this is the result of iTunes adding from two to five seconds to each track as it imports the track using Apple Lossless Compression. As a result, a playlist that was actually shorter than 80 minutes becomes longer than 80 minutes.
Then, WITHOUT CHANGING THE TITLES, I remove 60 seconds from the total playlist time BY EDITING THOSE TITLES to make them shorter. For example, "Only the Lonely.mp4" is changed from 2:28.93 to 2:23.87.
I do this by using Peak to remove "dead air" from the end of the track. I then save the new file and substitute it for the old one in the iTunes library. I look before and after at the iTunes file info to confirm I have actually shortened the track by 5.06 seconds as far as iTunes is concerned. In my playlist the time now reads 2:23 instead of 2:28. I do this to other tracks, 10 or more times, to reduce the actual running time of the playlist by a full minute or more. The playlist is now UNDER 79 MINUTES.
But iTunes will not burn this exact playlist on one CD. IF, on the other hand, I simply change one track from my playlist to another track (with a new name) and a shorter playing time, iTunes will burn it just fine. What iTunes will not let me do is burn the exact playlist I started with, from which I have subtracted a full minute's time. I need a fix for this specific situation.

  • Have moved Itunes library to external HD, now can't burn cd's to anywhere?

I have recently moved the music folder to: F:\Backed Up music, and now when i burn cd's they don't seem to go anywhere. i check the backed up music folder and they don;t show up there, and i search the computer for the files, and they don't show up anywhere on the computer. have I made a mistake somewhere?
i have also checked the: keep itunes organized, and Copy music to itunes music folder when adding to library.
    thank you very much,
    e

ok when i go to prefs----Advanced--General-- it states the location for import is F:/Backed up Music [which is a folder on the external HD that has the rest of my music on it]
For some reason the folder[or itunes] on the HD is not creating new folders for artists and albums imported.
does this help anyone troubleshoot the issue?

You would call Apple Support, for which you would probably be charged for the support.
Note that just because those CDs work with your old computer doesn't mean that it's still not an issue with those CDs and the burner in your newer system. Some CD brands just don't work well with some optical drives. If you haven't tried a different brand, and if you're using CD-RW trying CD-R, I would suggest you give that a try just to eliminate that possibility.
    Regards.

  • I noticed that iTunes is making all my imported music m4a, instead of MP3, now I cannot burn cds.  Can you change m4a's to MP3's?

I noticed that iTunes is changing all my music I import into m4a, instead of MP3.  Now I cannot burn MP3 cds.  Is there anyway to change the m4a into MP3 so I can burn cds & listen to the cds in my car?  The M4a do not play in the car.

  • Again I ask Itunes will no longer burn a playable cd for cars why???????

I need to burn my CDs and several songs from the itunes store to a CD that plays on my 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe. The previous itunes libraries 7-8 I have had since I have had this car and their burnt CDs worked fine. However now if I burn in this version 9 nothing plays. I Import CDs with 20-30 tracks that on previous systems a full burn could take place and no quality lost. Now these burns in the new system do not work.
Now before you ask me if it was set to Audio Yes it was and I also set it to 2X speed. My Car is supposed to be able to read MP3 CDs and used to read those from my Itunes library but now not anymore.
Also I have reset it to audio and found that at 2x speed I can get a CD to burn up to 5 songs a disc that will read but come on we know something must be wrong, we should be able to double that amount.
Before you ask did you make sure the speed is adjusted to a low speed, let me tell you this, I have been fooling with the settings trying to solve this problem and have wasted CDs and found that of every available speed, 16X was what worked best prior to Itunes 9 and now after wasting CDs and checking settings as I experimented, 2X is the only one to show me any playable music and only 5 songs, I want to be able to burn more than that.
So I have been adjusting the settings constantly and have determined that if it was set to audio and 2x I get a 5 song disc, however if I try to burn more the entire CD is wasted because it becomes unplayable. I have also tried this with every available CD-R which is the only burnable my car is able to play. Everything from Memorex to Sony and PNY and the same results happen still.
I have also tried this in Toast Titanium and in there not one CD burns at all. I am beginning to wonder is it really Itunes that is the problem or is it a problem that has happened due to a update file that was in the Mac OSX update for superdrive.
I checked with my dealership and they told me that windows burned CDs still work perfectly which they even demonstrated in my car, however when we looked at a CD burned from the one apple computer at the dealership, it too would not read. Thus it leaves us to wonder, what is going on here.
Can anyone give me a valid explanation or an actual mac genius please trouble shoot this for me? I need an answer that is better than another question. Please read through this before asking anything please help thx

Okay, can someone please give a useful answer? Thanks! I have been experiencing exactly the same problem for some time now, and it is very annoying. Furthermore, I would like to point out to Chris CA that there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the original post.
So here is the deal. I used to be able to burn CDs with iTunes that played back fine on both my car and home stereo. After some update, and I am very sorry but I really do not remember which one, as I am just a user and not a programmer and just want something that works, which in the end Apple used to be all about, and therefore do not keep track of all the updates, CDs won't play back on my car stereo. Nothing else changed, still the same brand of CDs (even the same stack!), still the same car stereo, and still the same 2007 MBP. So by simple deduction I conclude it must be a software update. And I do not care what the exact cause is, I just want a fix!
I'd like to apologize for my tone in the above, but it is just a very annoying problem, even more so because it seems nothing is being done about it. Thanks for your answer in advance!

  • Since I updated my itunes I can't burn a disc in MP3 format.  I converted the list to MP3 but it still won't burn., Since I updated my itunes I can't burn a disc in MP3 format.  I converted the list to MP3 but it still won't burn.

Since I updated my itunes I can no longer burn a playlist to disc using MP3 format.  I clicked on converting the songs to mp3 format but they still won't burn to disc.  The computer says it is checking media and then stops.

same problem. Im using itunes version 10.6.3, I converted wavs burnt from cd, to mp3 using itunes, these were  NOT PURCHASED from itunes, and when I try to burn an mp3 cd using the new mp3 files, they convert to wavs before my eyes every time i create a new playlist of the mp3. The mp3 revert to wav within less than 30 seconds. As if itunes is saying, let me help, I substitute the higher quality 1411 wav files for you. And of course, now they wont burn to mp3, because "they must be converted to mp3 first" before burning.
But every list of the mp3 version of the files keeps reverting to 1411 wav files?
    WHats going on? Thanks

Thanks again. The option thing got me further than I've gotten thus far but when I went to choose a library I got that same message.
I do have options. I have 2 iMacs. I can still access my music through 'sharing' and download it onto my newer iMac. Trouble is it doesn't have a CD port and I like to burn. From what I've read about their new Mac portable CD/DVD drive, it's shaky at best. Incidentally, do you know of any drives that work well with Macs and cost less than $89.00?
I've figured out I can download a previous library from my old Mac then upload it from the new one which should put me back in business, but what do I do with the corrupt one that's there now, just trash it? Also, when I do the option key my other choice is Create A New Library. Should I do that and put the good previous library into it?
Thanks a million, I really appreciate your time. I'm an old fogey and computers often mystify me, especially when they lock me out of things for no apparent reason.

  • ITunes 7.3.1/Burning Data CD's or DVDs

I've been burning DVDs and CDs for a long time now through iTunes. But it seems that since I've updated to the new 7.3.1 verson of iTunes, I can't burn Data on either my Mac or my PC. For my Mac, it says that the burn speed is too fast. Even when I've lowered it to 1x. It won't burn at all. For my PC, I was able to burn DVDs for a brief time after I updated to 7.3.1 but now I get an error "the attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured (261)" I've been using the same DVDs and CDs for years and never had a problem. I also gave my co-worker a disc that failed in my machine and he was able to write on it with no problems.
My co-worker and I have the same PC and he is able to burn DVDs fine and he updated his iTunes as well. Does ANYONE have an answer for me? I'm stumped and there doesn't seem to be anything written up on this error.

I also had some trouble getting my point across the first time. I clearly explained that I know how to do a backup. I am writing to you about an ERROR MESSAGE, not a how to procedure. From that point on, they were quite understanding and they stopped talking down to me.
I had also written about the 261 error. Although they never gave me a solution, they did write a few times with some temporary suggestions.
At least they assured me that the backup errors were well documented and that a new version was being worked on. They even went so far as to tell me last night that the version was coming out today.
They obviously need a better way to communicate to the whole community, at one time, in one place. I was happy to get their ear and know someone with the ability to fix it, was fixing it.
As I said before, 7.2 will be on my computer for a very long time. It has everything I want and need and it works perfectly. That is MY SOLUTION. I have no desire to be an unpaid volunteer to test their software.
We all know that 7.3 had to be released, ready or not, to correspond to the IPHONE release. The wealth of error in the latest version are directly related and not a surprise.
    I wish you well.

  • Play list refuses to burn!

I'm using an iMac G4 with about 12gigs of HD space available (I know, I know) and I put my itunes library on my external HD a 250 gig external. Before I did that I could burn CD's with no problem.
Today, I went through close to 25 CD-R's trying to burn 3 stupid songs. In itunes preferences I have it set to "Audio CD" and I have in importing set to "MP3 encoding" I remember that after the disc burned it would automatically eject itself. Now, it will write the disc, burn and then make a second copy on the desk top. Basically, I will put in the blank disc, name it and it will mount to the desktop showing how much space is available and ready to go, then when I go through the steps to burn, a second disc will come on the desktop under the same name I named the disc "Mix File" or whatever, and it will have the mp3's on it, but the first disc that mounted will still be sitting there and when I go to remove it the eject symbol will turn into the "burn" symbol. So, I go ahead and drag the disc to be burned and then it will say "An error occured with the disc. It cannot be used" or something to that effect.
I strongly believe that it has something to do with me having itunes on the external, but I don't understand what. I am BEYOND frustrated. I don't understand why 'double' discs are showing up and why the first disc is still sitting there waiting to be burned after everything has gone through the motions of burning the CD. Does anyone think it has something to do with the external? I don't know what to do.
    The disc I'm using are hp cd-r 52x 700mb/80min
    Help please!

I am confused. It sounds like you are going two things. First you are loading in a blank CD and in the FINDER, mounting it to be used to store files. Then you try to go into iTunes and have it burn a playlist, where it will ask for its own CD. It won't know to use the "mounted" blank CD you set up.
You should NOT put in a blank initially. Instead, set up your playlist, hit the burn button and wait for iTunes to prompt you for a blank.

  • Updated to Mavericks. Can't open my itunes now?

My hard drive on my MBP recently crashed, and I had to have it replaced. On the old OS X, I had to download Lion from the App store. When I rebooted my computer with the new hard drive, you have to use Mavericks. Well, I downloaded it, and went through all the steps. I even updated my computer before downloading mavericks so that all my applications would work.
Unfortunately my itunes won't open. It won't even try. No error code or anything. It just refuses to work. Is there a way to re-install itunes and get rid of the other one that doesn't work? Or do I have to re-install the entire OS X? I tried re-starting, and that did nothing. I even checked for more updates.

i know you probably have resolved the problem but others may have not. so in case someone else has this problem then try clicking on applications, then right click on itunes, then get info, then change all permissions to "read and write" you should be able to go about your way from there. but if that doesnt work this will for sure.
i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did. step one-Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.) step two-download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions fromhttp://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/)step 3-open Terminal step 4-enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
    killall iTunes
    killall "iTunes Helper"
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
step 5-drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock. step 6-install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works. step 7-go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time. with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life

  • ITunes cannot find disc burner or software

I quit burning a playlist one song in, now the CD won't eject from my computer and iTunes tells me "disc burner or software not found". ***???

Reboot, manually eject the CD, repair permissions and see if it works. Generally on all macs interrupting CD or DVD burns and even in other applications, like Toast causes all manner of confusion. Let it finish next time even if you change your mind since the CD is ruined anyway.

  • ITunes suddenly refusing connection to Apple TV

    Hi,
Problem: iTunes suddenly refusing connection to Apple TV!
I noticed that the above was occuring and checked out iTunes to be dismayed not to see my normal Apple TV in the iTunes devices list.
My problem is similar to ihttp://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1631334&tstart=0
Which appear not to have been answered - yet has "Helpful" answers available: 2 . "Solved" answers available: 1 . (whatever that means??)
The only change I've made recently is not renewing mobileme services. My mobileme user id was also my Apple ID (which should not have expired with the mobileme account). To protect the Apple ID I changed the associated email address to an non mobileme one. As an extra precaution updated my iTunes to the new account email address and verified itunes computer authorisation as well.
At the same time thinking that the Apple TV might need to have its iTunes connection refreshed I removed (as it was not working anymore anyone) the original iTunes setting and set to reconnecting using: settings>Computers>Connect to iTunes
On the Apple TV the usual dialogue appears with the expected 5 digit passcode. I then expected iTunes to pick this up which did not occur in a normal fashion. What did come up was an inane dialogue box with the following comments (the same as I had been getting before all this nonsense started):
    'Authentication required
To access this site, you need to log in to area "daap" on 0.0.0.0
Your login information will be sent securely
    Name:
    Password:'
    etc
Obviously I've tried my updated Apple ID / registered email - but they don't work for the login and there appears to be no other explanation for this (obviously I've noted Apple's implementation of DAAP, however I still can't find a solution - hence this post)
I would really appreciate a solution to this as I am now unable to use my Apple TV whatsoever

    Hi,
I am having the same problem, getting the following message when launching iTunes "To access this site, you need to log in to area "daap" on 0.0.0.0." I just recently update my OS to 10.5.6, but when I launch iTunes (8.02) and try to synch either my iPhone 3g, Apple TV or the wife's Ipod touch, none of which appear.
    Is this a know problem?
