ITunes on external Hardrive- Will Time Machine back it up?

I have all my iTunes music and iPhoto pictures on an external harddrive. I have another external Harddrive that I use for Time machine. I want Time Machine to Back up the external harddrive. When I open Time Machine preferences, the list of "Do not backup" contains my external harddrive and when I try to select it and hit the "-" sign it is grayed out. What gives? How can I use time Machine to back up my music and photos? I cant keep all that info on my internal harddrive. Surely Apple must have thought of this. Help!

Had the same issue,
Had to make sure that all the drives I wanted to back up using Time Machine were in the same format. e.g. Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
When I did that it gave me the option to back up the drive(s). However, be aware that to format a drive will delete the data currently on it.
I had to move everything off the drive. Reformat. Put the data back on. Then Time Machine accepted the drive for back up.
Hope that helps?

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

  • Will Time Machine back up iTunes media  on a different internal drive

I have my iTunes media on a different internal drive.
Will Time machine back up that data as well?
I have two other internal drives, each 750gb.
Does Time Machine back those drives up as well? Or does it contain itself to the OS disk?

    Stephen,
Amazingly, Time Machine will do this by default!! In fact, Time Machine will back up every volume that is present at the time of the initial backup, unless told to do otherwise. I keep my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a secondary partition of my MBP's hard drive, and Time Machine backed that up automatically.
Your backup will be contained in a "Backups.backupdb" folder on whatever external volume you choose to use for Time Machine. Within this folder, you will find other folders named for the various volumes that are being backed up. As far as I know, there is no limit to how many can be kept.

  • Will Time Machine back up data stored on an external drive ?

I'm planning to add an external hard drive to my iMac to hold more data. I also plan to to use a larger external drive for Time Machine. Will Time Machine back up both the internal hard drive and the external data hard drive?

Sorry I was out for awhile, click on "Frequently Asked Questions" at the top of that page that I linked in earlier.

  • If i move itune to external drive does time machine still have backup?

if i move itune to external drive does time machine still have backup?
I just moved my itunes off my macbook pro because it was taking up too much space and put it on an external hard drive. i have a second external hard drive that i use for time machine. when i update time machine next will my itunes files be removed from the backup since they are no longer on my internal hard drive (what time machine backs up?) basically, i want to make sure i have a second copy of my itunes besides the one on my first external hard drive and i was wondering if time machine will still have all of that data (on the second external hard drive).
i cant find this answer anywhere!!! thanks so much!!!

Check to see whether or not it's excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.
Items deleted from the hard drive won't be deleted from the backup until the backup location runs out of space.

No. Time Machine has been specifically written not to back up to an iPod.

  • Restore iPhotoLibrary specifically from EXTERNAL Hard drive  Time Machine back up?

My laptop Photo Library is corrupted somehow. I tried to restore from a prior in Time Machine on laptop and made the mistake of not saying to keep BOTH copies,  but after trying for 3 hours of telling me it was doing it through various windows, a little one popped open saying something about permissions and it opened an old iPhotoLibrary  from 2 years ago! ... I do have that one now and am copying it off my laptop as fast as I can to FLICKR
cuz APPLE has become a PHOTO sinkhole... (We are talking 20,000 pics folks with scanned in family pics from 100 yrs ago!)
I think I have a good copy on my External Hard Drive Time Machine back up from about 3 weeks ago. How do I use that to Restore from
or should I just wait for this PHOTOS thing to come out?
NEXT Question is there a convenient way to split it into MULTIPLE ones..eg KEEP old stable photos in one or more.
and use another for all the new ones not editted or sorted yet? I do see there is a new Option under iPHOTO/File menu to just switch
libraries but, of course, you cant even see that if your Library wont open!

For TM help post in the forum for your OS - and see https://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/ and http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html and http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Depends on undisclosed information
With the current OS and iPhoto you switch library using the switch library command - with any version you can switch libraries by holding the option key down while you launch iPhoto which brings up the select library window
And generally it is not a smart idea to have multiple iPhoto libraries - it generally has no advantages and makes things much more difficult and complicated and often leads to user errors that cause major problems
If you want to anyway the most convent way to split libraries is to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -

  • Will time machine back up a second "internal" drive?

I have a Macbook Pro "late 2008" unibody.
I'd like to eventually buy an SSD drive to use as my "boot up / programs" drive and then use my much larger conventional drive as a "data" drive which will reside where my superdrive was.  Will time machine back up this second drive or is it limited to the drive it's installed on?
If it's not possible, I'd appreciate any recommendations / tips on how I would back up the second drive or an alternate back up solution to back up both drives more efficiently.

It'll backup all except items you add in the exclude options as below:

  • Will Time Machine back Documents up?

My copy of Leopard is coming on Tuesday, but I would like to clarify something before I take the leap and upgrade.
Here's my situation: Instead of using the Documents folder on my internal HD, I bought a portable 40G USB HD to use as my "Documents" folder, thus saving precious HD space on my MBP.
My question is: will Time Machine back up the contents of my portable HD?
    Thanks

Yes. You just need to take the drive that has your documents on it off Time Machine's exclusion list in System Preferences. Also, it would probably be a good idea to make sure that you only include alphanumeric characters (a-z,0-9) with no spaces or punctuation in naming any Time Machine source or target drives. Some people have have reported that Time Machine can be finicky about that. Also make sure that your Time Machine volume is properly formatted, Apple Extended (Journaled) with Apple Partition Map partitioning for PPC Macs and GUID for Intel Macs. It can be a bit tricky to get new drives formatted correctly. There is an explanation and a fix here.

  • When using Time Machine to back up to external drive, does Time Machine back up content in your Trash folder?

When using Time Machine to back up to external drive, does Time Machine back up content in your Trash folder?

Go to System Preferences (under the Apple menu) > Time Machine and click the Options button. Click the "+" button in the lower left. In the resulting dialog, check the Show invisible items checkbox. Go to your home folder and look for Trash. Click the Exclude button in the lower right.

  • Will Time Machine Back up an External Hard Drive Attached to my Mac Pro?

Apple TV is GREAT, but it quickly filled up my hard drive. My thought is to take my folder that contains all of my personal files and put it on an 1TB external hard drive. I'd then "point" iTunes to where this new folder is. First, is that the right approach? Will that mess anything else up? Second, can I have Time Machine then back this external hard drive up? So, I'd like to have Time Machine back up my Mac HD and the external HD. If Time Machine won't do this, is there a good back up program for Macs that is very turnkey?
    Thanks in advance!!!

If the drive is formatted +Mac OS Extended,+ yes. While it's connected, go to TM Preferences > Options. If it's listed in the exclusion box, just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom.
If it's listed in gray, however, it's either formatted wrong or corrupted, and you can't remove the exclusion.

  • Will Time Machine Back Up Data on a Networked Time Capsule to an External HD?

Situation: I use my time capsule as a "network server". This is where all my files, music and movies are located. These files need to be backed up regularly. The Time Capsule is connected to my MacBook Pro via ethernet.
Question: Can I use Time Machine to back up my files on the networked time capsule to another external hardrive?
Goal: Data from TIME CAPSULE backed up to an EXTERNAL HD via time machine. I can have the external HD on the network or via USB to the Macbook Pro.
Any help is appreciated. I've been trying to do this off an on for a few years with no luck.
    Thanks!

Can I use Time Machine to back up my files on the networked time capsule to another external hardrive?
No, but ChronoSync can do this and I believe that Carbon Copy Cloner can now do this as well.

  • After using an external HD for time machine back up, MacBook Pro unable to restart

I just bought a new MacBook Pro, before starting to transfer anything from my old MacBook Pro, I did a Time Machine backup on the new external HD (did not use the original ext. HD that I usually used to do my back ups). The back up was successful, I ejected the ext. HD, my old Mac went to sleep and I was not able to wake it up. I restarted it but each time I get a message in several languages that I must turn off and restart again. Done it but doesn't work. I tried to restart it by plugging the ext. HD but didn't work either. Tried to restart it by pressing on "shift", did see the bar trying to restore, but eventually the bar disappears and the grey spin starts then freeze, then computer goes into coma. What to do?

I am a little confused. I have an internal drive that I want to back-up to an external drive. BUT also, more importantly actually, I have an external that has total different contents than the internal and I also want to back that up. Will time machine do that?
Yes, as long as the drive is formatted properly.
In other words I want to back internal to "drive B"and I want to back up "drive A" (that has totally different contents than internal) to B drive as well. Can that be done in time machine?
While drive "A" is connected and mounted, go to +System Preferences > Time Machine > Options.+ If it's listed in the exclusion list in black, just select it, click the minus sign, then Done. It will be backed-up on the next backup, along with your internal HD.
But if it's listed in gray, you can't remove it. That means it's not formatted properly. You'll have to copy the data elsewhere temporarily, reformat, then copy it back. • Formating External Drive - Removing Time Machine Back up

I have a 400GB Toshiba external drive, 1st time when I connected that with MAC than it asked if i want to use that as a time machine back up. I selected yes, but now when I am trying to connect that external drive to windows pc than its not detecting the drive. So please tell me how can I format the external drive so that I can use the external drive with different laptop....Thanks a lot in advance.
N.B: Some one told me tht it should be NTSC so tht I can use that drive with MAC as well as with Windows. But I dont know how can I do that......

I would not trust the advice of this someone. If you have future questions, just start a new post and you should get more reliable info.
NTSC is a video signal format (vs. PAL). As well, as Kappy stated, Macs cannot write to NTFS without a third-party software.

  • Will Time Machine back up and external hard drive connected to my TC?

Here is my desired set-up: older Powerbook G4 whose iTunes Music is saved on an external HD (WD MyBook offering USB, FW, and ethernet connections); backup wirelessly to a Time Capsule using Time Machine; connect the external drive to the Time Capsule either using USB or ethernet (whichever is faster); have Time Machine backup everything, ie, the laptop and the external drive connected directly to the Time Capsule.
Right now, the external drive is connected directly to the Powerbook using Firewire and everything is working as desired. I would like to have the external drive networked, however, so that I can enjoy music on the laptop without having it connected to the external drive. Seems like I could connect the external drive to the TC to provide a networked iTunes library, but I also want Time Capsule to back it all up together with my Powerbook.
    Is this possible?
If so, which connection method is best between the external drive and the Time Capsule, USB or ethernet?

No. Time Machine will not backup a network share such as you describe. Sorry.
