ITunes on external HDD via Thunderbolt 1 showing Permissions Problems

I have ITunes Media on a Pegasus R6 unit since it is large and my Macs have SSD drives which are firstly not large enough & secondly I prefer to keep most important things externally. It works fine !
But when I run Disk Utility Verifying Permissions on the SSD I get a huge amount of permissions problems they dont seem to effect the performance but there must be over 100 problems I can run Repair Permissions and although it claims to have sorted them if I VERIFY THE PERMISSIONS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE PROBLEMS ARE STILL THERE ! I have re structured iTunes since it had a Media folder within the Media folder the problems still show.
I did not have this problem with OSX 10.8 the system seems unaffected by the permission problems but it is odd that in spite of repairing Permissions the problem continues .
I should add there does not appear to be any problems running iTunes I am a little ****** at having sent quite a lot of time remioving all the media from the disk I use for iTunes copying it to another disk and then starting afresh which also meant creating all my playlists again.
Here is a screen shot of the problems showing after Verifying permissions this is after running Repair Permissions .
I hazzard a guess that this is a Mavericks fault and is very minor but irritating.
Is there a solution I can do or will a future Mavericks update take care of this.

Yes pleAse do move it over the permissions verification shows ACLs language store settings etc none of which actually effect the performance I run disk utility either after software updates or before a weekly shutdown and it shows these faults if my Pegasus unit is attached and since I use it for photos time machine back ups etc it is connected all the time I have verified the Pegasus disks and they are fine although obviously I can not verify permissions on any of these disks .

  • How to retrieve files on external HDD via Time Capsule?

I have external HDDs connected to Time Capsule but when I access those HDDs, they don't show the files that were stored in them.  However, when I check the "Get Info" on those HDDs, it shows how much capacity is used and how much is available.  How can I retrieve my files on those external HDDs via Time Capsule?  Many thanks for your help!!

    How is the drive formatted?
Does it show up in the airport utility?
TC has very restricted ability to read HFS+ (ie standard Mac format) or Fat32.

  • Problems Backing up Itunes to External HDD

I am having issues moving my Itunes to an external HDD. I get errors from the Finder saying it can't find the files to move (only for 2-3% of them but with a 1000 folders it gets annoying), but I can easily find the files in my Itunes through Finder and my Itunes app plays them just as easily.
Is there a way via the Terminal to just force my Mac to move my Itunes files to the external HDD?

  • External HDD via eSATA or internal HDD - which is fastest?

I am thinking of putting a fifth HDD in the optical bay of my mac pro. It looks a little bit fiddly to install (brackets, routing cables etc). I also have a Sonnet Tempo E4P SATA card. Is aan external HDD connected vis eSATA as fast as an internal drive?
Also, if I have two external drives set up as RAID 0 and use these as a scratch disk for photoshop will they be faster than a single internal HDD?

I also have a Sonnet Tempo E4P SATA card. Is aan external HDD connected via eSATA as fast as an internal drive?
Yes - an external HD configured with the E4P is just as fast as an internally mounted hard disk. The advantage provided by the eSATA host adapter is that the HD attached to it is now hot swappable. The internal hard disk is not.
Hot swap is great for backup sets and adding storage as needed.

  • External GPU via Thunderbolt

With the new Mac Mini refresh, any hope of a new discrete GPU inside has been completely killed.  That said, I need a new PC still, and I'm willing to get creative in order to find a Mac that suits my needs inside my budget (under $1k, gaming capable).  While initially disappointed, I did have a Eureka moment when I saw a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure for external cards, but I have a question to ask first.
To those who have tried it, what success did you have with External GPUs over Thunderbolt?  I'm well aware of the limitations of the Thunderbolt spec, in that it's essentially a PCIe 2.0 4x slot, but I also know that many higher end desktop GPUs don't even saturate an 8x slot, and that the lower end ones use even less bandwidth, despite the slot length.  My idea was to grab a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure, like the OWC HELIOS, and jam a GeForce 650 inside for gaming purposes.  Allegedly, it works fine under Windows with some tweaking and software hacks, but I want to get confirmation before I run out and drop the coin for such a setup.  I'm absolutely dying to switch to Mac here, and I'm willing to Frankenstein my way into a good setup if need be, I just want input from those who have tried or succeeded with it first.
    Thanks!

For what it's worth to other people searching I did find this article on Tom's Hardware about the Echo Express Pro, which showed me two things:
The solution works on Windows, since it sees Thunderbolt as a PCI Express slot.
It likely won't work under OS X, since Apple doesn't support it, nor do vendors.
The latter point isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just a symptom of a bad round of hardware design by Apple on the Mac Mini, combined with their desire to keep the platform as stable as possible by limiting hardware driver support to 3rd party peripherals and whatever hardware they shove into the Mac itself.  I can understand where Apple is coming from, even if I disapprove of it in this specific case.  That said, while the current Mac Mini doesn't meet my needs on its own, Thunderbolt makes it possible to meet my needs for gaming, so long as I don't mind booting into Windows 7 to accomplish it.  The major downside to all this is cost: with a Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure running $380 to $1000, and a low power gaming GPU like the GeForce 650 going for $120, you're looking at $500 or so alone just to get into the game, not including the cost of the Mac Mini itself which, if you're a gamer anyhow, is at least $1200 with that spiffy Fusion Drive and an AppleCare warranty!
Still, it's an option. Just not a very reasonable one.  As much as I'm absolutely dying to switch, I guess I'll try holding out another year to see if the next refresh fixes the Mini and brings back discrete graphics.  This price of entry is just way too steep.

  • Backup iTunes Library External HDD?

I am upgrading to Leopard this week and want to do a complete clean upgrade to Leopard. My iTunes library is over 100GB, and I don't want to have to back it up to DVDs. How can I backup my iTunes library to an external HDD and still retain my precious playlists, ratings, etc...? I wan to also backup my entire library, not just purchased music etc..

The following link will give you the instructions to move iTunes to an EHD. These instructions need to be followed EXACTLY. From what you have posted, it sounds like one of the issues is you moved the whole iTunes folder, instead of just the iT music folder. The 2 metadata files within the main iTunes folder must stay on the main drive of your system as that is their "home", they can't be moved.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
As a suggestion for future posts, it's always much better to start your own topic rather than disrupt someone else's topic with a similar but unrelated issue. It can also get very confusing to try to troubleshoot with several different people on the same thread who have different issues. Thanks!

  • Can't see my External HDD via Airport Extreme & powered hub

I have Windows 7 laptop and it just can't seem to detect my HDD via the Airport Extreme wired through a powered hub. If I connect HDD directly to my laptop it can see the files.
First I had problems with seeing my printer and found out that I had to install Bonjour and that worked. Is there some kind of program to make my HDD accessible?

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?

Yes, you can get your library back intact - if you save the ITL file and have the same user name on your fresh system:

  • [SOLVED]Problems auto-mounting External HDD via fstab entry

    Hello!
I recently set up TimeShift, a backup tool, and I have it set to store the snapshots onto an external HDD. I would like the program to make a snapshot once daily and to do this I would have to mount the external manually.
So I looked up instructions on how to add an external HDD to my fstab. It worked, I got the harddrive to mount at boot, however it then disabled my belkin usb-hub (which has my mouse and keyboard plugged into it). I ran the following commands to add the external to my fstab...
    sudo mkdir /run/media/disco/backup
and then I had to find the path to external by running
    mount
found the line I was looking for which was
    /dev/sdb1 on /run/media/disco/fcf1f0b0-d756-41d6-a7c8-2ab7d009be2e type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,data=ordered,uhelper=udisks2)
So I edited my fstab to the following
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda1 UUID=a2ba860f-a990-4c75-879b-1138d941857d
    /dev/sda1 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda2 UUID=43fab9a6-904a-4c2e-8362-d2205ef6bbe2
    /dev/sda2 none swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sdb1 /run/media/disco/backup auto auto,user,rw,exec 0 0
I reverted back to the fstab that doesn't have the last line, and my belkin usb-hub works again.  I'm just curious if I'm doing something wrong, or if I need additional steps that I am missing.
Any help is appreciated, please and thank you! (:

proper directory for persistent mount points is
    /mnt/
The /run directory is used by runtime applications as, say, a temporary working directory usually meant to be accessed by other applications as a way of IPC (unlike /tmp which is used as general dump for mostly private volatile data, temporary caches, etc.) The /run directory is usually a tmpfs meaning it only exists in memory and gets deleted on reboot. This is most likely the reason it didn't work for you.
Also, you may want to change the /dev/sdb1 dev node in fstab to a UUID entry so that there is no confusion in case of different block device node gets assigned to the drive (such as if it gets connected after some other storage drive, being it another USB drive, an SD card, or anything else).

  • External HDD locked, can't repair permissions or create folder at root

After having to do an archive and install as mac mini stuck in start-up, start-up not finished, start start-up again loop I am experiencing bizarre problem. Spend 3 days on this and now just 2 hours with Apple Support. Since the archive and install the 3 partitions of my external HDD all have a padlock on them. Tried many things including checking permissions from install disk or from usual start-up disk and even logged in as root user. At the root level it is not possible to create a new folder or trash items or to move anything to this level. At lower directory levels you can. Clicking on Get info for each partition shows the same thing. It says just above the name box that I can read only, yet by my name says I can read and write. However, selecting anything other than read and write does not stick, it ignores the request. At the sub directory level it says my privileges are custom. Logged in as a root user, I tried to move something to the root level of the HDD. It asked me to authenticate but even after doing that said I had insufficient privileges!
Please someone help. Apple support has had to escalate now. Their comment was "I've never heard of such a sever issue with permissions."
In the mean time I have limited control over my external HDD.
    thanks
    D

Hopefully you can help me out here as well V.K.
I had to reformat my Mac and now can only read my external drive. I have tried everything. Here is the response I get to running:
sudo chflags nouchg /My Book II
chflags: /Volumes/My Book II: Read-only file system.
I can read files, but when I try to delete them I get a error -67 code.I also cannot write to my external.
    Thanks

  • When syncing iPhone with iTunes, my external hdd disconnects

Hi! After I updated iTunes to the last version (9.1.1) appears one problem — when i connect my iPhone 3G 16Gb and iTunes is launched, it starts to sync as it is intended — and my external usb hdd disconnects. And it is required to restart the whole system with disconnected iphone to connect hdd as usual.
The itunes music library is on this hdd. I have mac-mini 1.83 core 2 duo with 4Gb ram and latest update of 10.5 Leopard.
I also recently installed fruux for syncing this mac-mini with my macbook, and may be it is the reason, but I uninstalled it fully (as writen on fruux website), but the problem is still as is.
Please, help — this problem makes my iphone fully isolated from my iTunes library :(((

Make sure the following setting is unchecked:
    Lightroom / Preferences / Import:
[ ] Show import dialog when a memory card is detected
Report back if it is already unchecked and LR still starts up.

How do I enable Thunderbolt display input via HDMI to use my MacBook Pro late 2011 as a display for other media? I have HDMI connected by a rocketfish adaptor and their company website Q and A seems to indicate this should work.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

My MBP is super fast with an SSD second drive.
in my Imac, can I get that same speed if I boot from an external SSD drive through thunderbolt port? or would the ssd have to be inside the imac? I guess I want to know if the thunderbolt connection is slower than if I had the SSD inside the Imac?

Don't know if the Thunderbolt port is bootable but its speed exceeds the 6Gbs negotiated speed of SATA III drives.
