ITunes on Laptop v iTunes on Desktop
I know I read somewhere that you cannot copy purchased music or transfer rather, from one computer to another. How, then do I get purchased music that is on laptop hardrive to desktop hardrive and vice versa so that my libraries are the same?
Appreciate any ssistance/guidance!

It's easiest to move song files if the 2 PCs are networked.
Also if you want your playlist and playocunts to be the same, you need to keep these files the same on each machine
What are the iTunes library files?

When I plug in my ipod to my laptop instead of my desktop, nothing pops up to sync it. Has anone had any problems with itunes not recognizing an ipod?
Hi sarahdavis0_o,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If neither your iPod or iPhone are being recognized by iTunes when connected, I would recommend the steps in the following article.

Move itunes from desktop to laptop
I currently have itunes on my desktop (all music/media stored on external hard drive) but i just purchased a laptop and would like to itunes only on the laptop instead of the desktop. Do i need to move the itunes folder from my desktop or could i just download/install itunes from my laptop and then upload all media from my external to the laptop?
Thanks for your response. So on my desktop, I go to My Music, move the itunes folder (as is, with previous itunes libraries, etc) to my external and upload it to the laptop? "Do I still have to download itunes on my laptop? Please reply. Thanks

I have a new iPod Touch and one apple ID. I want to use My laptop aswell as my desktop computer for the one ipod, using the same apple ID. I have music on both computers and want to merge the two without losing any music or apps. How do I do this?
My iPod has music and apps from my apple ID that I downloaded to my iPod via iCloud and some apps that I got free from the store, straight onto my iPod, but my laptop has some music on it aswell, separate from my other library. I want to put the music from my laptop into my iTunes library which I want to use on both computers. Is it possible to do this?
Thanks.- You can only sync an iPod to one iTunes library/computer. You can however, manually manage music and videos among different libraries.
Go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.
- If y wnat to switch syncing libraries/computer see:
go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Sync your iPod....>Sync You Device>Set up Syncing>Sync your device manually and follow the instructions.

If all the synced media like music is in the iTunes library of the second computer it is very easy. -
I am trying to connect my iMac 21.5" desktop to my macbook pro via Thunderbolt cable so that I can use my laptop as an extended desktop. I have tried using detect displays to get it to show up and nothing happens. I've tried doing command + F2 to make it a targeted display, but the only thing I can get to happen is my iMac will mirror my Macbook and that's not what I want. No matter what I have tried it hasn't worked. I have tried turning both computers off and I have a brand new thunderbolt cable. I've updated all the software. Is there anything else I'm missing??
I'm running OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
Thank you !We've already done all of that. And we used the same thunderbolt cable to connect two iMac's and that worked totally fine doing the Command+ F2. I don't understand why we can't get the macbook to do the same.

Trouble partioning a laptops hardrive with a desktop
I just tried partioning a laptops hardrive with my desktop and i think something has gone wrong as the laptop is now flashing with a symbol (a folder with a question mark on it). I really need the data onto my desktop but I am really concerned I might have erased the data. Any help would be very helpful.

To resize (or delete) an existing partition without losing data, you will need to use, for example, iPartition:

Question
I installed Firefox (10) sync on my laptop instead of my desktop. How do I uninstall, so I may install on my main computer? In tools the only sync option is "sync now."It won't let me install it on the other computer as a new account, saying that my address is already in use (on the small one) -- that is the crux of the problem.
When I try to set it up as a not-new account (clicking that I already have an account), there are different problems.
Am I right in assuming it needs to be installed on the main computer first (so that the smaller one doesn't wipe out the (more extensive) stuff on the main computer as they sync? I would love to be able to uninstall it on the small one, and start from the beginning on the big one. -
How to transfer iTunes from Desktop to Laptop
I have iTunes running on my desktop and Mediamonkey running on my laptop. I want to transfer my iTunes folder onto my laptop so I can import my tracks into Mediamonkey as most of my music is now being stored on it. I do not want to use iTunes on my laptop. How do I transfer my iTunes without losing the information?
Windows XP
Windows XPYou need to install iTunes on your laptop.
Then drag the iTunes folder:
My Documents\My Music\iTunes
to another location eg the laptop's desktop.
Then copy the iTunes folder from My Music on the desktop computer to the My Music folder on the laptop.
This could be done via an external drive, your iPod or network.
This Apple article gives the procedure using your iPod:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
But the method is essentially the same however you transfer the iTunes folder. -
How can I transfer iTunes from Desktop PC to Laptop?
I have just brought a laptop and I would like to transfer my iTunes over from my desktop PC to my Laptop, does anyone now if this is possible and easy to do? Could I just download itunes from the internet on my Laptop or is it easier and better to transfer it all from my PC. My Laptop is Vista and my PC is running XP. Thank you.
The following article tells you how to do the transfer using an iPod. But the method is essentially the same whatever physical vehicle you use to copy files across. An external disk drive is good.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
Be aware that when you transfer files from XP to Vista, you may run into permission issues as the the method involves copying the iTunes folder created on another computer to a Vista PC and vista is fussy about permissions. You need to be sure that your account on the vista PC has full control. -
How Do I Get My Laptop to Use My Desktop iTunes Library?
My desktop iMac has an external HD where my iTunes library lives.
I just got a MacBook and would like to have the laptop access the same iTunes library.
The MacBook uses airport WiFi off my router, the iMac is wired to the same router, the external HD is attached to the iMac by firewire. I haven't yet figured out any network / filesharing / whatever.
Both computers are running iTunes 7.5 on OS X 10.4.10
What do I have to do?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Thankshi... let me know the entire network setup that you have...ISP details, model and version no. of the router and OS on the computer so that i can tell you step by step...
thanks. -
my desktop has crash and now i purchase a laptop. what i want to do is beable to listen to my muisc on my laptop like i did with my desktop with out having to keep plugging in my desktop to get the library up. so is there a way that this can be done without a risk of losing all of my purchase musice and having to re download my music cds all over again? Please help
There are a number of things you could do. One would be to network the two computers and transfer your iTunes folder from one to another. You can also if you have one, use your iPod as a hard drive and move the folder with it though that would be considerably slower than computer to computer. Here are a few links that may help you out:

Transferring itunes from desktop yo laptop using usb stick?
I am currently trying to move my itunes music from desktop to laptop using usb stick, i can get the music onto the usb stick from my desktop then try to cut and paste it to itunes music folder but it dosent show up in itunes itself, what am i doing wrong?
Paste it into another location on the laptop, and then drag it from there into the open iTunes window. iTunes uses a database to determine what's in the library instead of looking at the content of the iTunes Music folder.
