ITunes on Macbook Air doesn't recognise external hard drive once ejected

I just bought  MacBook Air less than two weeks ago and I'm loving it and I successfully mapped my iTunes to my music library, which is stored on an external hard drive. Howeve, whenever I eject the external hard drive to use the MacBook Air in a mobile setting and then reconnect it, my iTunes doesnt remap to the library. This never happened on my PC so I was wondering if there was a work-around/solution and if this is a common problem?

Think ive just found the problem.
It seems as though I needed to "unlock" the hard drive by useing the unlock icon in the WD icon on the desktop.
I forgot I had made a password for it and also didnt realise I had to enter the WD software that comes with the hard drive which automatically appears on the desktop when you turn it on or plug it in.

Yes, the USB port is a combination USB2/USB3.  Should work fine.

  • How do i copy my folders from macbook air to my toshiba external hard drive?

i have been trying to copy files on macbook air to my external hard disk which i used for my windows pc, n=but im unable to do so. and i even cannot delete the files on the hard disk. but i can copy the files on hard disk to my air. can you please explain me the required process properly. thank you

The external drive is probably formatted for the PC using NTFS which the Mac can read but not write to. You have two basic solutions to continue using that drive and I don't recommend the first. 1) install drivers on the Mac to allow it to read an NTFS formatted drive. I don't recommend this because all too often an Apple update breaks the 3rd party drivers and you are stuck until the drivers are updated 2) reformat the drive (or partition it) so that the Mac and Windows can read it. exFAT is a format that fits the bill but remember that formatting the drive will erase the data. Partitioning is another option - creating two logical drives from one disk - one for the Windows and one for the Mac. Although there are programs that can perform a non-destructive partition it is always a good idea to backup the drive just in case.
Of course a third option is buying an external drive just for the Mac.

  • How can i get Itunes to route my music to an external hard drive once my Internal drive is full?

My Internal hard drive is getting full and im starting to worry about how i will store tracks in the future. I have my itunes set to auto organize the files into the Music folder when dragged into Itunes. I am a DJ, so i do get music quiet frequently that i need to add to Itunes for My DJ Software, Serato, To read. Is there anyway i can have Itunes begin rerouting the new songs onto an external HD? and can i play songs from two different hard drives with itunes open? Example, Song A is on internal.. once i finish listening to it or having serato acess it, If i then want to play Song B, which is on an external HD, will Itunes need to "Relocate the file" or will it remember its stored on the connected External HD?
    Thank you

If that doesn't work for you then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.

"...selected the new tracks directly in iTunes, Control-clicked on the selection, and saw that now you can consolidate selected items." - http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090919000326840
Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

  • Macbook no longer recognises external hard drive

    Hello,
My Macbook Air doesn't recognise my HDD when I plug it in, however my dell laptop does.
When I plug it in the light of the HDD turns on and starts 'working' normally (no bizarre noises).
When I open my parrellel network, Windows recognises it however I still cannot access the files or open it in a window.
    Any recommendations?
    Thank you

One, post this in a forum that handles hardware, not the Pages for Mac forum.
It sounds like you may have your HDD formatted in something unusual. Like a Linux format perhaps?
With the drive plugged in, open Disk Utility and see if it recognises it and tells you what the formatting is. Don't reformat it or you'll lose all your content.

  • Won't recognise external hard drive.

Hi there I don't know If this is the right section, If not please forgive me.
Right I have a MacBook an I connected my external hard drive to it for time machine. I have windows installed on my laptop an I wanted to transfer a few files between the partitions so tryed connecting the hard drive, but it doesn't seem to sense that it's connected. It recognises mini USB sticks so it's not a USB problem.
Has anyone experianced anything else like this? An know how I can get windows to recognise my HD?
Thanks for any help u can give

Windows can't read Mac Extended formatted drives (which is the drive format that Time Machine requires). Two options are: either connect the drive back on the Mac, and use network sharing, or purchase MacDrive if you think you'll need regular drive sharing between the two machines.

  • How do i make itunes find my music library on an external hard drive?

OK. So i got a new PC and ive downloaded itunes. Ive authorised itunes. However, no matter how hard i try, i cannot get it to find my existing itunes library which is situated on an external hard drive.
I know ive done it before with my last PC but cannot remember how...and itunes made sense back then rather than the nonsense it is now.
    Any tips?
    Cheers

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

  • How to make iTunes recognize the music library in my external hard drive after instaIling Yosemite?

How to make iTunes recognize the music library in my external hard drive after instaIling Yosemite? I tried re-setting the media folder location, but it didn't work. What else should I do?

The issue is not related to the external drive. iTunes Match has difficulties matching tracks ripped fom CDs because they may differ slightly from the versions on sale in iTunes. You can try the match again. Otherwise do a search of this forum. There are already many discussions on this subject here that may help you.

  • I can only access the itunes library if i plug in my external hard drive.  is there a way to add the music to my internal hard drive?

i can only access my itunes library if i plug in my external hard drive.  how do i find where the itunes songs are on my external hard drive and how do i move them to my computers internal hard drive so i no longer have to have the external hard drive plugged in?

When the drive is connected, use the Organize Library command in iTunes. If the entire library is located there, drag it to the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it there.

i want to reinstall os X yosemite on my macbook Air but i erased the hard drive and i cant get the local recovery option; only internet recovery; is there any way to go back and get local recovery option?

    Hi Bockworld1,
I'm afraid you did an error when erasing your hard-drive, this has automatically erased the "local recovery". In order to pass-by this, you must use a former Mac OS X installation DVD (such as Snow Leopard 10.6.3) and then when updated to 10.6.8 you may access the Mac App Store to recover the Yosemite Installer and proceed to a fresh "update" OR creating a Bootable USB Installation drive with DiskMaker in order to alway get a installation copy.
I also suggest you to create a USB Basic Operating System (you must select a local USB device to install Yosemite or whatever OS you want) with only the base operating system to launch your computer in case of Main Operating System issues.
Given the amounts of issues reported by users with 10.10.2, I command you to download 10.10.2 version to get a stable OS working.
Let me know how it is going.
    Good Luck.

Purchase a couple of these when they go on sale.
Start burning all the photos onto DVDs.
At least you'll have all your photos if your computer, time machine or any other backup you use goes bonkers.
