Itunes on nas

Dear Sirs
I have bought an Iomega Home Media Network drive cloud edition
This drive is used to store my movies and my my music, the drive contains a iTunes server
Is it possible to see a share these movies and music in iTunes on a Macbook
I'm aware of the option to store the whole iTunes library on the NAS but that's not what i wanted. The idea is to have a small library on my Macbook and a lot of moivies (space) on the share.
As far as I know, this was possible with iTunes 9, but is it still possible
kind regards - jan

I have the same issue you have.
I bught a Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive Cloud Edition.
I copied all my music files into the network drive, enabled media sharing, etc.
When I open itunes there is a folder under the Share section that appears, howeverm when I click on it, it starts loading.... but the song list never appear and it switch to the local music library instead.
I do not know what to do.
I assume it's not a network issue because I've draged and dropped some music files from the Music folder on the network drive into the Music Library.... it means that files are added to itunes library, but are located into the network drive. If I have to copy more than 150G of music, it will take fore ever and probably hang iTunes.
What I want is to access all the media directly from the Shared section.
Any help !!!?????
Cheers,

  • Problem with Itunes and NAS after installing latest version of Itunes

After installing the latest version of Itunes on my new PC (Windows 7 Ultimate) I have problems seeing the music off the Itunes server on my NAS.
I see the name of the NAS under tab SHARED (GEDEELD in dutch), but when I click on it,  Itunes is making connection with the NAS but I see the music for less then a second.
Then the display goes back to the tab LIBRARY.
I've searched the web for this problem, checked on my firewall,... nothing to find.  On another windows 7 PC, it is still working fine but this is an older version of Itunes.
So what can be the problem ?

No, I had not uninstalled it, I didn't realize I had ever installed it.  I don't use it at all, never have.  I uninstalled the MobileMe Control Panel then restarted my computer for good measure, and that appears to have resolved the issue!  Thanks very much for your help!

  • Itunes on NAS and accessed on 2 laptops

    Hi All
This is my first post...so please excuse any mistakes
    I have a NAS ... (Dlink DNS 320 Sharecenter)
I have copied some of my CD's to this NAS, and renamed all the files and all is well
There is 2 people (myself and my wife) who have 2 different Ipods.
Both of us are using Windows 7 laptops...
Each of us has our own Apple account, and as such, have the different Itunes and music tastes/playlists
Please help me...as I want to know....
The best way to configure Itunes on both laptops (hers and mine) that will allow us to have access to the NAS music, and also be able to add our own purchases to our own laptops only. (I really don't want alot of her music...and she not mine)
I do want the NAS folder to be self updating into Itunes (on both laptops)... as I am still copying the last 20 odd CD's into the NAS and then want the ability to automatically have the added NAS music/folders update in Itunes
I know that this music will not be available on the laptops when travelling...but this is not an issue, as we both have our own ipods.
This would simply be to manage playlists...add new music....delete old songs from the ipods...etc etc
    Anyone help please?

Surely someone knows how to do this?

  • Setting up multiple users / computers with 1 itunes on NAS

    Hi all,
Sorry in advance is this question has already been asked, there is so much stuff floating around on the forum that it would take for ever to surf thru it all.
I recently purchased a Buffalo NAS with itunes server on it.
I'm currently in the process of copying all music folders from local Disk to NAS - some purchases from iTunes, some from my own CD collection.
I will be reinstalling windows on my Desktop PC.
What i want to achive is
    1. A fresh start in iTunes (no ratings, no play counts etc), i will be rebuilding my PC soon so i guess this bit is easily achieved - install iTunes and point to the NAS.
    2. Then install iTunes on a 2nd computer, and when I play a song or rate a song from either computer, ensure that the information is visible from the other computer. (Basically if i rate a song on computer 2, and then log onto computer 1 at a different time, the rating made from computer 2 is visible).
    3. Have the same playlists duplicated on computer 1 and computer 2.
    4. Setup a 2nd user on the 2 computers (Family member) to access the same music folders / files as myself, so that they can rate the music according to their taste without changing the rating I've already made,
Finally, we both have our own itouch players, and want to be able to sync independently using the above.
Thanks a million in advance to anyone who knows the answer to this hopefully easy problem.

ios devices don't really work well with multiple users at once

  • Using iTunes from nas as streaming service

    Hi
I would like to know if Apple, like the Linux community, have found a way to stream video and music from iTunes library place on a NAS drive so that You don't have to have Your AirBook or MacBook open and running as well.
I have been informed that only way to use iTunes as a streaming library, is that I have my AirBook open and iTunes running before I can stream video or music through AppleTv to my television set.
Please tell me, that Apple has created a solution for the above, as I really like to use the product much more cost efficiently than have power on too many devises in order to stream Video and Music.
    Regards
    Preben

Presumably there would have to be a program running on the NAS itself to serve the files.  I don't think Apple sells any NAS so probably doesn't develop for it. I note that many people have problems getting NAS to work with iTunes even when iTunes is running and there's probably problems with NAS talking to iTunes.  I don't recall seeing any NAS support by Apple itself, but a few people have mentioned some brand of NAS which does make a library on another drive appear as a "shared" library in iTunes.  Again, I recall it was not flawless.

  • ITunes on NAS with iTunes server

I would like to be able to store my iTunes library on a NAS so that I can access it from any computer in my house. I have been warned against storing any large libraries remotely. One thing I have seen is that some NASs have iTunes servers built in. Does anyone know how this would work and would it solve problems with large libraries on a remote drive?

You don't need the Itunes server for computers running iTunes. You just point iTunes to the library on the NAS using Shift + Start iTunes.
I have a large library and it works flawlessly. It takes awhile to load the cover art thumbnails when browsing on my slower computers. I have a wired gigabit network.

  • Multiple iTunes on NAS

I know I can share playlists, but am planning a central data drives for all three Macs at home with everybody's iTunes on it (by aliasing from their users account). When my son is booted into windows on his intel Mac, will we still be able to share his iTunes which are now on the NAS?

How exactly did you set it?  You do not do it in preferences (a common mistake).  You do it by starting up iTunes while holding down the option/alt key whereupon iTunes will irreversibly convert what it sees as the library, namely the iTunes Library.itl file, to a version which will only work with the newest version of iTunes you run (your 12).  Clearly you can't use 12 on your old computer so there is no way to share the same library file. Each version of iTunes will have to run its own library file which will essentially maintain its own independent list of entries, though they can share media.  This means changes you make to one library will mostly not appear in the other but if you do something such as delete media in one library the other library will fuss it can no longer find the file, etc.
If you are going to start doing advanced iTunes things you need to learn how iTunes works.

One other tip. Just about every mention I see of people using iTunes with a NAS is something with a problem that results from using iTunes with a NAS.  iTunes is likely not written with NAS use in mind.  It may work, or it may not.  Keep regular backups.

  • Transfer itunes to NAS

    Hi
I want to transfer my itunes library from my iMac to a NAS drive that sits on my network.
I can see how to set up the location in iTuines Preferences, and I can see that under File > Library > Export library I can export the xml file, but but can someone tell me the best way to move all the music to the NAS drive - is there a sxpecial process?
    Thanks
    Alex

    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from your computer to the NAS.
To use this library with iTunes, hold Option, launch iTunes on your Mac select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
You can delete the /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal.

  • Itunes imac nas (synology)

My itunes on the imac (10.7.3 Mac OS X) cannot or sees no longer the NAS. So i cannot import movies and files from the NAS through Imac to the Ipad. On the windows computer i have no problems. Does anybody recognize this problem? What to do?

  • Best way to store iTunes on NAS

    Hi Guys,
I have just put a 256GB SSD in my iMac and I was looking to put my iTunes library on my 2TB NAS drive. Can somebody please advise the best way to do this.
Is it just a case of changing the iTunes media folder location within the preferences once I have copied the iTunes media folder to the NAS.
Also what is the best practise for downloding items from the iTunes store. WIll they automatically download to the NAS?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lee

I found this on Tuneranger page even though the site for the app creator seems dead
Q: The ratings, playcounts, etc. from my iPod won't copy over to my iTunes when using TuneRanger.
A: TuneRanger only supports syncing of iTunes metadata (tags not part of the music files such as ratings, playcount, etc) when doing an iTunes to iTunes sync over a network. We don't support syncing metadata to/from the iPod. All the tag info embedded in the files is transferred but those fields proprietary to iTunes are not.
Does anyone know how to sync BPM and Comments when iCloud is NOT an option? (I don't have internet when I am dj'ing nor would I want to depend on access from the server in a pro situation)

  • ITunes 10 NAS disconnecting when transferring purchases

    Hi,
I have the following iTunes setup. Mac Mini, Snow Leoprad, Qnap NAS. My iTunes library and files are all located on the QNAP NAS. The share is connected via an automator program on startup.
This setup worked perfect and without any problems until today, when I discovered a strange behavior in iTunes 10.
After purchasing an album, the files start to download and then all of a sudden, the share gets disconnected.
I have to close iTunes, reconnect the share again and restart iTunes again.
The file that was downloaded while the share disconnects can not be finished and I had to contact store support for new delivery.
There are no problems while playing songs etc.
    Any ideas or similar problems?

I have iTunes 10 on a Netgear READYNAS with the identical symptoms including very slow (unusable) performance.
ReadyNAS contains all iTunes directories and data
MacBook connects to NAS via CIFS and Wi-Fi

  • Lost music after moving iTunes to nas

Ok I've been a Pratt. This I know. But can anyone help me?
I bought a buffalo NAS drive and set it up as my network storage
I copied the contents of my computer hard drive to it
Deleted my music, along with document files, from my laptop (yes I said I'd been a Pratt)
Thinking that all my music is on my nas I then synced my iPhone 4s and promptly lost all my music from my phone
I can see that my music is on my NAS but after ages of me prattling about I seem to have many fragmented iTunes libraries
Today I get a shiny new laptop so it's time to sort thing out.
Is there any way I can easily find all the music on my NAS and set it up on the new laptop without ageing a further 10 years?

Holding "Shift" Button on iTunes start will let you setup a new library. You can then choose your library file on your nas ... and everything should be fine again .... if you moved the whole iTunes folder to your nas.
Otherwise, you can delete your songs in iTunes without moving them to thrash and then add them again from your nas ... be aware that iTunes does not update the tags of your music files when changing them in iTunes. This information is only stored in your library. So if you changed e.g. album names or genres you have to do it again when adding deleting and adding from a new drive as you clean your library by doing so.

  • Moving itunes from NAS to computer

    Dear Reader,

Kmow I find I cannot sysnchronise with my iphone and outlook because the NAS seems to be too slow,so a syschronishation takes 12-14 minutes instreat of 2-3.I when iI use the iPhone and Outlook for work.
I would like to use Home Sharning but once putting my itunes on my desk top I seemed to lost almost everything alhough most of  my deskop music is present and all of my applications have disappeared.
I have not deleted any of the files on my NAS drive. I have two other compiuters I would like to share itunes with.

  • Moving iTunes to NAS or Drobo

I'm considering moving iTunes to my Drobo and would like to know if anyone has done this by moving whole contents of iTunes folder and then replacing the contents on the Mac with Aliases to all files and folders in new location?
    Aliases or Symbolic Links?

i know apple has a help disk on your system disk that carries all personal data over from old system to newly installed systems, like playlists, email setting, bookmarks, etc. but i don't know how it would work with non apple environments. ask your apple dealer. yeah so what's the alternative. thinking outside 'the box', is there any standalone digital player stereo system available now that does not require computer hookup, that does not need stupid operating systems, that does not need software updates, that does not try to sell you something each step of the way, that can record, play, download, music cds, vinyl, aac and mp3, organize my library, 50,000-100,000 songs and just let me listen to my amazing music? i am tired of pulling five tons of software around just to hear songs. ipod it too small and the earplugs kill your eardrums. i remember hi-fidelity stereo on a vinyl sound surround system. now that was phaaaaat! mac osx is too slow. aren't nas and drobo still computer software? they actually look like external drives for computer. i looked them up but very little that makes sense to me out there. i'm talking about a standard music player with a built in 1 terabyte, oh ****, make it 10 terabyte storage system.

  • Using iTunes with NAS

I have all my music and itunes files (iTunes Library.itl, etc) on a NAS. I have an iMac and a MacBook. If I point each to the library on the NAS should I be able to use them both with the same library without corrupting any files?  Eventually I want to use my MacBook exclusively for iTunes but I'm unable to do that for a while. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggetions.

This topic was recently discussed on this forum.  I am of the opinion it won't have any ill effect on the files, but no direct experience.  Another responder was concerned about file corruption, but didn't provide reasoning.
The one major problem you likely will have is the library file cannot be opened by two copies of iTunes at the same time. You will have to ensure that when using iTunes on one computer you quit the application before using it on the other. The way to avoid this is for each computer to have its own library file but the media are stored and shared on the NAS.  Unless two people are trying to edit the tags on the same media file at the same time there shouldn't be any conflict. The disadvantage is you have ot keep both libraries up to date.  As you can see, some of the best response lie in the detail of the setup and users which you haven't told us.  If you are the only user of both computers you can make it work with a single library file which will always be up to date when opened on either computer.  If it is two users then each will probably want their own library anyway and you should set it up that way.  Of course media changes will have to be applied separately to each library.
