Itunes on windows does not recognise ipad
iTunes on my windows xp pc does not always recognise my iPad. Also, the icon in the task bar which indicates when a usb device is attached, does not appear.
Neither of these problems appear when I attach my iPod.
Any suggestions will be welcome
Robin
The iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone do not appear as external drives which is why they do not show up in your Task Bar as externals the way an iPod will do if the option "Manually manage music…" has been checked. With that option selected the option "Enable disk use…" automatically becomes available which means that you can drag files to the unused portion of the drive. This is not the case with the devices mentioned above. As to the recognition of your iPad by iTunes you might want to check to see that the connection is firmly in place each time that you mount it onto the computer-- both the computer USB connection and the Apple Dock connector.

4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
Are you releasing the home button when you see the connect to iTunes screen? Does iTunes start on its own? If it doesn't - start iTunes yourself.

IPod Nano: Error Message "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"
Hi everyone, I just received 2 brand new iPod Nanos for my kids for Christmas, thought I'd be smart and sync them both now before wrapping them so I don't have to be messing around with them on the day. One synced without a problem, then using the same cable, same computer, same USB port, the 2nd one came up with "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it" I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging and reinserting the USB. Is there anthing else I can try before returning it? Thanking you for any help.
I have solved my problem, I ended up ringing Apple and got an awesome lady who told me to reset it by pressing the sleep button and menu button together for about 10 seconds and once it actually turned on for the first time the computer then recognised it, so it's all good, :-) Thank you lovely lady!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!Hi ameet2005,
Please check if the following suggestions help:
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:
1. Click "Start" button, type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue”
if necessary.
2. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
3. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.
If the issue persists, please check if it can be resolved by running
System File Checker.

Itunes does not recognise ipad or iphone after window 8.1 patch May 2014
Last week my laptop did a patch update to windows 8.1 and now Itunes does not recognise my ipad or iphone when i plug them into the USB ports.
The devices do ask "to trust the computer" and Windows itself reconises the ipad and iphone and i can get to files on the apple products through windows but itunes doesnt see them and therefore doesnt sync therefore i cant download music onto my phone etc.
Ps i did uninstall itunes and reinstalled but this didnt work. Although after reading about other people with similar issues on past window updates I think I may need to uninstall all apple software .
I have an old Ipod 5G that works fine with Itunes.
Anybody with similar issues and a plan to get this sorted ?...... as i need music on my phone for holiday !!Hello andyv,

when i try to connect my phone to itunes a message comes up saying it does not recognise it and must upgrade itunes to 64 bit i have done this numerous times but stillwill not recognise my phone.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.) -
ITunes 7.1 does not recognise 5G iPod
Apple SOS. Just installed iTunes 7.1, iTunes no longer recognizes when I connect my 5G (30GB) iPod using the Apple USB sync cable supplied with the iPod. Both iTunes and my iPod work fine independently, but nothing happens in iTunes when I connect the iPod using the cable. It worked fine 1 week ago, but now since the installation of iTunes 7.1, nothing !
I have tried several times, using both of the USB ports on my 17' G4 Powerbook (10.4.8) As a result I cannot charge or sync my iPod, so it is now pretty much useless.
Apple needs to rectify this situation asap, but in the meantime I would like to hear from anyone else that has some problem. Is there any solution to this?
Thx

17' Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8) iPod 5G 30GBHi,
Thx for the response. I was aware of these procedures, but they do not help.
I had already tried the first 3 steps before I posted my support SOS, and my OS is right up-to-date.
At the beginning of the procedure I it says to make sure the iPod is fully charge, however this is impossible because nothing happens when it is connected to my Powerbook with the USB sync cable. iTunes or OSX do not recognise it, so it will not charge or sync, and the battery is almost dead now.
Everything worked fine until I installed iTunes 7.1, so there must be a bug in this update. Note, iTunes 7.2 works ok independently of the iPod, and works
fine in standalone opeation.
Q: What difference does it make if re-install iTunes 7.1 ? Surely the problem is related to this version itself !?
Also, what will happend to my iTunes music Library if I remove the iTunes application in order to re-install it?
Thx.

I have tried to sync both ipod and ipad2 (new) with itunes running on win 7 64 bit. I have all latest versions installed on all machines.
The ipod and ipad are just not recognised in itunes.
I have an old win7 32 bit system on the same machine and everything works perfectly.
Any ideas welcome.http://randomwindowstips.wordpress.com/2009/12/08/windows-7-itunes-9-software-is -not-installed/.
This was the answer to all my problems, once i updated the drivers all good! My iPad kept insisting I didnt have the 64bit itunes (which i did) and when I checked the files I was supposed to have as per the link instructions, I had none of them. Disappointed I had to turn to some random files off a blog rather than having apple actually provide useful help. As long as they are making money though :Z
