ITunes only responds about every 20-30 seconds

I fear this may be too broad a question, but I thought I'd ask it just in case there's a common solution.
Basically, most of the time, let's say I double-click a song and iTunes starts playing.  Then I try to click something else, but it's like iTunes is frozen for about 20-30 seconds.  The music isn't interrupted; I just can't DO anything, whether it's select a different song, pull down a menu, hit "pause", click in the search box.  Even the progress indicator on the song stops moving, then jumps ahead 20-30 seconds.  Then it responds for a few seconds, then freezes again, over and over, pretty much all the time if I have music playing, which is most of the time.
Otherwise, the PC runs fine.  I'm about resigned to getting rid of iTunes for some other music-playing software that works better on a PC; it's just that I'm so comfortable with iTunes and I have everything organized just how I want it and I really wish it would just work properly.

If they were installed then you have a choice of uninstalling them, this goes for both required & optional updates and applies in most cases with exception being if they are system specific to the OS updates.
Here's the process to uninstall updates for Win 7.
The Windows Update log file is located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.
You can uninstall each two different ways.
'''Option 1. '''
* Open Control Panel & select windows update
* Select view update history
* Click on the Installed Updates link at the top of the View update history window.
* Select a listed Windows Update that you want to uninstall, and click on the Uninstall toolbar button.
* If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes or enter the administrator's password.
'''Option 2. '''
* Open the Control Panel (All items view), and click on the Programs and Features icon.
* In the left pane, click on the View installed updates link.
* Select a listed Windows Update that you want to uninstall, and click on the Uninstall toolbar button.
* If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes or enter the administrator's password.

    Hi,
One thing to check is the following.
If you have HP 3D DriveGuard installed, open windows Control Panel, open HP 3D DriveGuard, click the Disable button, click Apply to save the change, then click OK.  Restart the notebook and see if this has had any effect on the sound issue.

  • Finder/iTunes only recognize audio CDs at the second load

It's the first time I decided to backup my audio CDs and I'm having the same problem which was posted several months before as we can check at this topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10960592
That topic hasn't been answered yet and I would like to refresh this discussion because iTunes and OSX have had several updates since the topic's launch and looks like this issue still hasn't been fixed.
Is there any automator script or patch that assure the audio CD to load correctly at the first time?

I am having the exact same problem. I have seen *a lot* of posts about this topic and hope that apple resolves it soon.

  • Refurbished iMac with OSx and the screen jumps/flickers about every 10 - 15 seconds.   Suggestions?  It often seems fine on start up .

I recently got a refurbed iMac with OSx adn the screen jumps/flicks every 10-15 seconcds.  suggestions?

If you purchased it from Apple, you are covered by the warranty - take advantage of it and call them as that appears to be a graphics issue.

  • Browser keeps freezing, we get (Not Responding) about every 2-3 min.

We have disabled quite a few of the plug-ins, but nothing seems to work. i've even removed firefox and then reinstalled. I've got a Lenovo U350. Not sure if it is a hardware or software problem.

This has all the hallmarks of bad RAM. It is weird that a power surge would only manifest itself in the RAM, but I suppose not impossible.  It is especially noteworthy that you are getting KPs when booted from the Leopard disc. This says to me that you have hardware issue not related to your hard drive, and the most likely culprit is RAM.
If you can get the thing booted, try downloading and running a few tests with Rember (free, donationware).  It is a memory testing tool that iteratively loops through all your RAM to smoke out bad addresses.  Or you could just try removing all your RAM DIMMs and re-introducing them one-by-one to find the bad RAM...
    Good luck!

  • Itunes only imports 20 seconds

When I put in a CD to add to music library, itunes only imports about 20 seconds or so of each song (although when you look at the bit that displays the CD info, it lists all the songs properly). I have tried with several CDs. It is driving me mad, please help.

    hi Maria!
I don't have a lot of information about your system, so my advice is going to have to be general. see:

  • My Ipad (purchased 5/12) constantly switches screens without prompting.  This happens about every 3 seconds.

I purchased my iPad 5/12.  Since a recent trip inwhich I used a verizon hotspot device to stay connected, it switches screens without prompting.  New screens pop up about every 3-5 seconds.  How can I reset?

Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider.

  • Mouse pauses every 2.5 seconds

Got a brand new 27 inch 3.06 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac (2009). The magic mouse AND any USB mouse that I plug into it pauses at the same interval about every 2.5 seconds. It's just enough to screw up everything you are trying to do.
Tinkering with it, I have managed to figure out that it only does it when I use an external monitor plugged into the iMac...
I have an external 24 inch monitor plugged into the iMac to extend my desktop. The external monitor has 2 inputs (DVI and VGA). When I have both the iMac and the 24 inch monitor set to Mac (DVI), the mouse works just fine. But when the external monitor is set on the Windows machine (VGA), the mac mouse (Magic mouse or USB mouse) pauses every 2.5 seconds. I don't know why monitor input settings would cause the mouse to pause and I haven't seen any threads with the same problem. Any ideas?

The 27-inch iMac is the first (and only) Mac to make double-use of its video port.
I think you have already shown it is somehow related to the Mini DisplayPort, and you can easily reproduce the problem on-demand. Since Mac OS X still sees the second display, even when it is switched over to the VGA input, it may not be related to the new video input capability.
As a test, what happens if you put it into the state where the pausing is going on, then disconnect the adapter on the back of the iMac. I would assume iMac would pause for a second and reset to having only its built-in display, and the ongoing pausing issue would stop. Then, reconnect the adapter (display still set to VGA with active input). The iMac should reset to having the external display. Does the pausing issue start happening again?
Here's another test. With the display set to DVI, insert the Mac OS X installation disc and restart with the C key held down. This will force start up from the optical drive. When you get to Installer, you should see the default Desktop background on the external display, and that will indicate it is being recognized and used. You should be able to move your mouse cursor onto it, although the arrangement may be different. Now, do the thing that usually causes the pausing. When you are started up from a different system, does the pausing still occur?

If Other (the yellow bar) is too big something is corrupted.  The only solution (that I know of) is to restore from your most recent backup using iTunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

  • HT201528 IDVD version of videos pause momentarily about every ten seconds and diagonal lines are ziggy. Image looks good all the way through the process and even on idvd

I am trying to make a dvd from a video I shot with a Sony HD avchd camera on a new mac mini running mac os x version 10.7.4
I'm using an up to date  Imovie but copied IDVD version 7.1.2  and the support libraryt from an up to date macbook.  The video is about 40 minutes long.  It looks beautiful all the way from teh camera to playing it on idvd, but when I play the dvd on a player or in a computer it stops momentariily about every ten seconds and the picture is ziggy on diagonal lines.
Also, if I try to save the movie as a .mov file there is no audio.
Can't I move idvd to my new computer?

    Hi
Why is the picture better all the way to iDVD - then degrades on the DVD
    • DVD is as standard - interlaced SD-Video
If You need better then only way is via Blu Ray
    • iMovie'08 to 11 - can not deliver this any way known to me to iDVD - first step in the degradation process
Use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut to do this delivery to 100% of what's possibly
Jaggy diagonal lines - mostly due to the use of iMovie'08 to 11 as they only deliver every second line in an already limited quality as interlaced SD-Video - taking away 50% doesn't improve a bit
Jumpy movie -. most often due to feeding iDVD wrong frame rate and forceing it to convert - IT DOES this BADLY. I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to do this and it does this even better than pay applications.
iDVD can only deliver 25fps (PAL) or 29.97fps (30fps) (NTSC) - so feeding it
    • 24 i or p
    • 50p or
    • 60p
    Will not improve at all.
If iMovie'08 to 11 are only option - Then
    • DO NOT - Share to iDVD - as this too degrade the final product
    • I do - Share to Media Browser - and as - LARGE - Not HD or other resolution as this too degrades quality
More can be said on this - My long note follows - if of interest.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes and my pc still will not connect with the iTunes Store. I have tried just about every suggestion on the web to no avail, please help.

When I click on the store it just never opens, I do not receive any message. I try to "refresh the page" and nothing. While having the store selected I go to "help" and check for updates and i get a message; "The iTunes updatte server could not be contacted" and it prompts me to check my internet connection which is fine. None of the items under the "Store" respond with anything.
I ran a iTunes Diagnostics/ Under "Which Tests do you want to run" I check only "Network Connections" and the results that I receive is...
