ITunes opens automatically when iPhone3G is docked, but I don't want it to.

I seem to be having the opposite problem that others have been posting about, which is that iTunes doesn't open when they connect their iPhones/iPods.
In my case, it does, but I don't want it to. I've been keeping the iphone in the dock next to my computer to ensure that it has a full charge before I hit the road each day, but if I take it out of the dock to take a phone call or do something else with it, then the next time I insert the iPhone back into the dock, iTunes fires up, even though I've made no changes that require a resyncing.
I've gone through the prefs in iTunes, but the only thing I can find is a setting under Sync that says "Don't automatically sync...", but that's only half the problem.
I seem to recall a setting somewhere at some time in the past that said "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected". What happened to that setting?
Is there some way that I can redock the iPhone without having iTunes boot up?
Thanks!

Hehe, I was able to recreate your scenario exactly, and I got mine to work, hopefully it will for you too:
To recreate your scenario (greyed out "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected", it NOT checked, yet iTunes still opens when iPhone is connected) I did this:
I don't know if this part matters, but I started out with "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" checked in the device summary tab (too lazy to see if it matters. ;o)) then I went into preferences -> syncing and CHECKED "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods". After this, I went back to the Summary tab and sure enough, got the greyed out message for "automatically sync" and it now it is UNCHECKED. Closed iTunes, plugged in my iPhone and lo and behold iTunes still opened!! This is your scenario exactly right?
So it appears that the combination of settings issue, because here is what I did to fix it: Preferences -> syncing and UNCHECKED "Disable auto sync", then went to the summary tab and UNCHECKED "Automatically sync" (because it ungreyed out and became checked again after changing the other setting), closed iTunes, connected my iPhone and iTunes stayed closed.
Hope this works for you.

You can do a malware check with a few malware scan programs.<br />
You need to use all programs because each detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database.<br />

  • Itunes opens automatically when surfing the web

I've noticed that recently itunes will open automatically when I surf the web.  Granted that I was surfing the same adult website, but I think there is something going on here like a hijack.
My apple is a late 2009 unibody macbook running snow leopard (I own lion, but it *****....I want the old finder back)
the site is xnxx.com that I have this issue with. remember it's adult so please don't be a puritan if you're going to address this issue.

I'm not sure why that would be.  It may be possible to trigger a download from the iTunes Store, which would result in a request from iTunes for your password before proceeding.  If that's possible, I would consider that to be a minor security issue, but since everything you could potentially download from there has been screened by Apple, there wouldn't be any malware involved.
Still, if you're concerned about drive-by downloads (and note that this is not behavior that has been seen from any Mac malware to-date), you should make sure to update your system and should make sure Java is disabled in your browser.  For more about keeping yourself safe, see my Mac Malware Guide.

  • Avoid iPhoto opening automatically when camera in docking unit

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me to solve a small problem. Somehow, some months ago I must have ticked off a box to make iPhoto open automatically when I press the USB button on my digital camera.
Now my mac is almost two years old, but works fine, except that iPhoto is incredibly slow. iPhoto using years to open each time I want to pick some pictures from my camera has become extremely annoying, but I can't find out how to turn that function off.. I guess the answer is quite simple?

    Martin
Go to Applications -> Image Capture. In the preferences to this app you can decide what happens when a camera is connected.

  • My iPod's screen says "Connect to iTunes" and when I connect it to iTunes it's telling me to restore, but I don't want to restore/lose everything on it. The "Connect to iTunes" message won't go away.

When I plugged my iPod into my macbook, a window for an iPod Touch software update popped up, so I clicked update, then it said that my iPod was over capacity or something similar to that, so basically I didn't have enough room for the update, which I thought was fine. So then once I unplugged my iPod, I was unable to use it. The screen was telling me to connect to iTunes (how it does when you first purchase an iPod, and turn it on for the first time.) So, I then connected it to iTunes and it told me I had to restore my iPod, it gave me no option other than to click "restore" But I don't want to lose everything that's on my iPod...but now I can't use it because the screen is still telling me to connect to itunes. How do I get out of restoring it?

If you have a graphic of iTunes and a cable displayed on your iDevice then it is in Recovery mode.
Check this to try an "exit"

  • ITunes opens automatically when I disconnect my bluetooth speaker

I have a Bose Soundlink Mini paired with my Macbook Air and play sound from various applications (Spotify, VLC, Chrome etc.). If sound is playing and I shut the speaker off, the sound will continue playing from the computers internal speakers, which is expected and wanted, but it will also cause iTunes to automatically open for some inexplicable reason. I don't know why iTunes launches, but it is very annoying.
After browsing the internet for a solution I've tried to disable iTunes helper by removing it from the list of automatically launched programs upon login and then also opening the iTunes.app package and renaming Contents\MacOS\iTunesHelper.app to something else. This did not stop iTunes from automatically launching when I shut of the speaker however.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can prevent it? I don't mind preventing iTunes from automatically launching altogether for whatever reason. But I would like to avoid to uninstall iTunes completely if possible. Suggestions are welcome!

  • ITunes opens automatically when I download music

When I download music my iTunes automatically opens and adds the new file to my library. Is there any way to stop this? I want to add the new files after I have reviewed and renamed them.

You have two things going on.
When you play a song in iTunes, it automatically adds it to the library. There is no option to do otherwise.
Apparently, you also have iTunes set as your default player for files of type MP3. Pick another player (I like Winamp) to use as your default. This will allow you to play/review new files in the other player, without iTunes knowing about it. Then, if and when you wish, you can add them to your iTunes library.

  • Wifi automatically shuts off when ethernet is connected, but I don't want that.

    Hi all,
I'm the second user of a company-owned MacbookPro (circa 2008) running Lion.  I occasionally need to connect my machine to both ethernet and wifi networks simultaneously.  However, every time I do that, a script kicks in somewhere that not-so-helpfully turns off the Wifi network for me.
I get the following popup in the upper right corner:
    http://imgur.com/5X6MW
    Airport Status
Wired network detected.  Toggling Wireless Off.
There is a similar popup that says it is turning the Wifi on if there is no ethernet cable connected.
Does anyone know where this is coming from and how to disable it?  I'm guessing the previous user of the laptop installed a script, but I haven't been able to find it.  I've been using this laptop since before Lion came out, and I don't remember it happening before Lion, but that may be because I didn't try doing two networks during that time period. It became noticable and annoying when I installed Lion though.  At first I suspected this was some default behvaior in Lion, but I've googled for the text given in the message and didn't find any Lion-related complaints.
It looks a bit like a growl notification, but it happens even if I kill growl.  I don't have anything that would obviously cause this in
    System Preferences-->Users&Groups-->Login Items
The closest thing I can find on the web is stuff like this:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/154976/2010/10/turnoffairportscripts.html
Explaining how to add a script that automatically turns Wifi on or off.  I've looked on my machine for scripts in the places suggested though and don't see anything.
I've also grepped all over ~/Library and /System/Library for 'network detected', but didn't turn up anything.
Other places I should look?  Could there be an automater script saved somewhere that would do this?
    Thanks,
    Malcolm

Ah ha!  Found it.    (Looked for it several times over the last few months, and of course finally tracked it down 30 minutes after posting the question).
My company network admins included that script in a package of stuff that got installed... probably when I was renewing my VPN certificate or something.
/Library/LaunchAgents had a reference to a folder elsewhere, and when I looked there I found togglewireless.sh
All squared away now... Thanks for reading.

I've successfully imported the videos I've shot with my iphone5 into iphoto on my MacBookPro but they're only showing up as still shots, ie the imported videos don't play! Itunes no longer opens automatically when syncing, and when I open itunes it shows that there are zero "home movies" in there, meaning that it never grabbed the videos from my phone either. What to do? Thanks!

    tl:dr?
    Really?
There was a short version expressly for people who weren't bothered to read a myriad of text.
Meh, not that it matters anymore. I ended up redownloading 70-odd albums, so I have the bulk of my music back. And I still have no idea what iTunes did with my files, but I'll make sure it never does it again.
I would thank you for the help but you were utterly useless. Oh well, carry on.

    Hi r,
It sounds like you're running Lion?
Have you tried running Verify and/or Repair Disk?
Have you tried running Repair Permissions?
Do you have at least 15% free space available on your HD?

  • Why does iTunes no longer open automatically when iPad is connected?

Why does iTunes no longer open automatically when iPad is connected? and iPhone as well?  Setting to "auto open" is selected, but iTunes will not open automatically. Problem seems to have begun with upgrade to Lion.

Good luck getting an answer...I posted the same question a day ago.   I can only assume it's a glitch in iTunes 10.5.

  • Itunes doesn t open automatically when iphone 4 is plugged

    thanks

    Hey Alexander,
Has iTunes Helper been removed from the login items? Go to System Preferences> Accounts> Login Items.
You can add it again manually as described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1610692
you can also get it back by downloading and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes.

  • My itunes opens automatically and i quit but it opens back up again

I am on my computer and itunes opens automatically and starts playing music. I close it and quit it but it just opens right back i tried restarting my computer and everything. nothing seems to work

    This is a possible solution:
Open up Activity Monitor and search for the process genredetection.
Quit this, and iTunes should then behave properly and quietly quit when you want it to.
If the process is not running check your ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins
and disable any present to see if they are the cause.
I create a folder iTunes Plug-ins Disabled to put them in.
    Thanks   ...   Ken
