Itunes out of date and can't download the new one

I have an iphone 4 and just downloaded ios6...my itunes says its out of date but when I go to download the new one it says my mac needs to be os x 10.6.3 or higher. So then I go to download that, and it won't let me. Any suggestions? I need my itunes!

Start with Snow Leopard, then decide if you want to/can upgrade more (jump to Mountain Lion).  Yes, you have to pay for OSX upgrades.  You may also have to pay for RAM upgrades to run the newer system versions and pay even more for upgrades to software that no longer runs under the newer systems.

It is just saying you should upgrade or is it absolutely insisting?  If insisting then you have no choice.
