ITunes Permissions

Hi all,
I have a minor problem in that since installing 10.5 all my iTunes tracks are read only, if I want to change an album or track name I can't. This is only on the tracks that were on my Mac prior to the upgrade, everything that I have put since is fine.

I suggest that you do it again, but from the version of Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on your Mac.
From the Apple Knowledge Base article About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature;
*Should I start up from a Mac OS X install disc to repair disk permissions?*
When possible, disk permissions should be repaired while started up from a Mac OS X volume (hard disk) that contains updated Mac OS X software, instead of a Mac OS X installation disc. Mac OS X software updates may change permissions on some files to improve security. When this occurs, the version of Disk Utility on the Mac OS X volume is updated to account for the new permissions. Running Disk Utility while started from the Mac OS X volume ensures that the changes made by software updates are preserved.

  • After iTunes 11.1 (126) Update - (iTunes) permissions won't repair?

    After the new iTunes 11.1 (126) update, not only was I disappointed that COVER-FLOW hadn't been reinstated (we knew that), I had the the little inconvenience of the wrong tracks playing when a specific track, or album, had been selected. For example, the new "Drenge" album was selected, but what was played was mix of Bob Dylan's "Desire" and Nirvana's "In Utero". I tried a few others and found that the new iTunes was sluggish and froze for short periods. When I tried to close it down a permanent freeze of the application occurred.
    Initially, I tried to remedy the problem by using "The Disk Utility" to do a disk repair. There was no need as the disk was fine, but the disk permissions, which were all fine prior to the iTunes update, were said to be repaired.
    However, when I tried to us iTune again the same problems occurred.
    I did another few permissions repair and found the same list of permissions were not repaired, all iTunes. (I have a copy of the list).
    I have an iMac (Mid 2011 version) which is running OS X 10.8.5 (12F37). I don't think that this is too old to be out of date, and has been running without a problem until the latest iTunes update.
    I reported this to iTunes support last week, They e-mail me back to say that I should contact Apple Support UK and would be charged for the pleasure of having support correcting the problem! HUH!
    To say that I was annoyed and upset was a little understated.
    I then uninstalled iTunes with "CleanMyMac" and reloaded a fresh iTunes 11.1 (126) from the Apple UK website.
    The inconvenience of reloading my entire iTunes Library, was a small price to pay for a fully functional iTunes. BUT, after doing so, I was extremely annoyed to find that my newly installed iTunes 11.1 (126) just refuses to repair and the disk permissions refuse to repair.
    iTunes contacted me again to say that they to were confused as to why this continues to be problematic? They suggested I do a disk partitioning and a reload of my entire Mac.
    I have spoken to the independent company that services all our Mac products and they suggested that a full clean install is more than likely to be the only solution.
    Before I do this,…  are there any other suggestions as to how I can resolve this??
    Any suggestion will be most welcome.
    Still, a very loyal Mac user!

  • ITunes permissions error when downloading from Store

    When I try to download music or an app from the iTunes Store I get the following error after clicking the button to download the item:
    " *ITunes couldn't download your purchase*
    You don't have write access to your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. Change permissions (in the Finder) and then choose Store > Check Available Download."
    I checked permissions on my iTunes Media folder and I have Read/Write access. I also applied Read/Write access to all enclosed items. I went into the iTunes Media Folder and manually created files and deleted them without any problem, so it appears I do have write access.
    Unfortunately I hadn't use iTunes for a few weeks , so I'm not sure when it quit allowing downloads. Everything else appears to work fine.
    Any suggestions on where to go from here would be appreciated!

    Thanks so much! I contacted iTunes support and they kept telling me to mess with my permissions in terminal but no one thought to mention the shared folder at all... This ended hours of frustration for me! Glad I found this discussion.

  • Time Machine and iTunes: hd failure, tm restore, itunes permissions problms

    Hi,
    Can someone please help me?
    I had my brothers old laptop, a powerbook g4 al 15" 1.25 ghz, 2 gig ram, 80g hd. The hd failed a couple days ago with big clicks that sounded like that arm slapping backing a forth. So, I bought a new 160 gig hard drive from ifixit, and replaced that yesterday. I installed leopard. I wanted a fresh install, so I just installed in normally, and then went manually into the external hard drive (500gb), and tried getting some of my music back from itunes in the time machine backup folders. It did not work well, and I could not find all of them, so, I re-instered the leopard install disc.
    I restored from Time Machine (not migrate because i did not know about it at the time), and have what looks like my old laptop back. Now I went to copy my itunes music from my laptop to my iphone, and here is my problem:
    My iTunes now says that 49 of my files are not authorized to play on this computer. I could give the exact error; it is: "..." well actually I can't right now because I am running onyx to try to fix disk permissions, so when that is over I could give the error message.
    Does anyone know what to do?
    The end of all this is to backup all my iTunes music on a disk (which includes downloads from emusic.com), and then delte the whole OS, and reinstall leopard, again, with a fresh install, but this time with my itunes restored.

    in that case it shouldn't count as a new computer when you authorize it. If for some strange reason it does count as a new computer you can deauthorize all your currently authorized computers and then authorize the ones you need.
    To do that in iTunes go to Store menu->View my accounts, and then click Deauthorize All. If you don't see this option, it's because you don't have five authorized computers.

  • Two problems with iTunes (permissions issue?)

    Hello,
    I have two problems with iTunes. I am not sure if they are related that's why I post them both.
    1) iTunes doesn't delete apps after updating them anymore. This is happening since the (two?) last versions of iTunes and is the same with 10.5. The reason seems to be the permissions of the apps. Nearly all have "everyone = custom". Therefore I have to enter my admin password when I try to delete them manually. And iTunes itself cannot delete them on its own, of course. Why is this happening? Why is iTunes assigning such permissions to downloaded apps?
    2) I can't login to my account from within iTunes anymore. That is also happening since quite a while. I am logged in (my ID is shown in the top right of the store) but cannot access my account details. iTunes asks for my password but after entering it the login mask appears again. It's not the password itself, it is correct.
    Any suggestions?

    2. Whenevever I run verify permissions, there are over a hundred permissions listed. It seems as if most of them are from iTunes, and it appears that they are never repaired.

    Don't bother with verifying, just repair them.
    As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

    Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.

    Although it’s immensely popular, repairing permissions is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which is rare, or a boot failure. It is not a universal rite of healing for computers. It has traditionally spewed bogus warning messages that mean absolutely nothing.
    The built-in help for Disk Utility reads in part:
    If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
    It’s justifiable, though rarely necessary, to repair permissions after running a third-party software installer, as defective installers have been known to damage the permissions of system files.

  • I just upgraded a machine to Lion and my iTunes permissions were corrupted.

    My iTunes folder shows I have custom permissions but their is an unknown with read/write. I tried to purchase some thing on iTunes and was told I don't have the neccessary permission in my itunes folders.
    How can I fix this? I tried repair permissions with Disk Utility but it didn't work. I try to add a user but it doesn't recognize any of the names I enter
    What should I do?

  • Correct iTunes Permissions?

    Hi all
    I have posted previous messages about having problems copying rented to my iPod Touch. After telling this to a friend he suggested I look at the permissions with Disk Utility. I have done that and get the following message. "Permissions differ on ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Frameworks/InternetUtilities.bundle/Contents /MacOS/InternetUtilities, should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are -rwxrwxr-x " After that I the program repair this and I think everything should work okay, but that is not the case, as I can't copy rented movies to my iPod. Well my friend then tells me to try Disk Warrior and do so. Disk Warrior tells me that the permissions should be -rwxrwxr-x, rather than -rw-rw-r--, as Disk Utility does. Anyone out there tell me which is right or if either is right? Also wondering if these neither is right I should go about fixing this problem.

    I'll reload it tonight when I get home...basically, I bought a new iPhone and downloaded some new medical apps. also had to download an update for iTunes into my mac laptop so I could access iCloud (which was NOT on my prior iTunes software)
    When I synched my new iPhone with the newly downloaded iTunes, I registered my iphone and tried to "back it up" to iCloud and the message indicating that "the required file was not found or has a permissions error...." popped up.
    How do I correct the permissions error, or...am I able to do this somewhere? Or...how do I find the file that is missing?

  • After enabling my firewall, I can't get the itunes permissions to stick

    I recently turned on my firewall (Security & Privacy --> Firewall-->Advanced-->Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections). I made sure to add iTunes to the permissions box above it. Regardless, now every time that I run iTunes, it asks me "Do you want the application “iTunes.app” to accept incoming network connections?". I can't get the permissions (in the firewall) to stick.
    I followed someone's suggestion that there maybe a problem with iTunes' code signing (so that the firewall will recognize it as such) so I ran "codesign -v /Applications/iTunes.app" in Terminal, and the response i got was: "/Applications/iTunes.app: a sealed resource is missing or invalid In architecture: i386"
    This is the iTunes version that was preloaded on my MacBook Air, then updated (today) to 10.5.1.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Sounds like a Codesign issue.  From terminal, type:
    codesign -vvv /Applications/iTunes.app/
    You should see:
    /Applications/iTunes.app/:  valid on disk
    /Applications/iTunes.app/: satisfies its Designated Requirment
    But if you see:
    /Applications/iTunes.app/:  a sealed resourse is missing or invalid
    [lists reources]
    You can either delete the offending resouces (risky) or try redownloading and reinstalling the latest iTunes.dmg from Apple.   Try the reinstall first.

  • Using up iTunes permissions to use iTunes Library

    I ran into an issue with iTunes today.  To begin with, Apple Care replaced my motherboard, power supply and hd fan to fix a hardware issue.  (It begins to look like it may not be fixed.
    As I started to do things after the unit was up, iTunes started saying this computer was not authorized.  giving me the chance to authorize it. I am guessing that the serial number was changed with the mother board and that i spart of the computer's identity.  How do I determine what is authorized and determine which that refers to.  I have an iMac, a MBA, an iPhone 3Gs and an iPad 2 as well as an Apple TV.  This you can run thing anywhere begins to look less good.  I now have a least two categories that aughorized 5 out of 5 computers.  How do I find out what is aughofized and which ones I should delete to avoid running out of authorization slots?

  • Fixing Permissions (iTunes.app) in OS 10.8.5 Update - HELP FIX?

    I recently updated from OS 10.8.4 to OS 10.8.5 .... and although the update went fine, I have seen an issue with the "Apple Disc Utility" that raises concerns for me.
    Everytime I have run the "permissions" repair, I have seen a "TON" of repair lines for the "Applications > iTunes.app > Contents . Resources > files.
    The list must have been a hundred lines or more ...
    (Actually were too many to screen grab, so here are a few I see):
    Any idea why these "iTunes" permissions keep poping up to be fixed .... and then once fixed or repaired, just keep popping up again to need "permissions" repair again in the "Apple Disc Utility"?
    Also, the first repair "permissions line I see is always:

    Any idea as to what this is refering too as well.

    I have been having Apple "permission" repair issues with the newer OS10.8.5 update, and want to re-install my previous iTunes version (v11.0.4 or 11.0.5). When I try to remove the existing 11.1.4 version (that has the permission repair issues), I am not allowed to simply place the 11.1.4 app in the trash and delete, as I get the following pop-up window:

    How do I get around these issues and delete my iTunes 11.1.4, so I can then install the previous iTunes 11.0.4 or 11.0.5.

  • How I managed to solve the problems with the 1.2 iPod/7.0 iTunes Upgrade

    As many of you know there are several people that have experienced a problem with or after upgrading their iPods and iTunes. While mine is not the definitive answer, it is one that worked for me and I hope that by sharing this, many will receive a benefit.
    This applies mainly to Mac users as my platform is MAC OS X based.
    Proceedure:
    1. Download the stand alone copy of iTunes 7.0
    2. Repair disk permissions. (I found that many of my iTunes permissions were in error after my initial upgrade to 7.0 directly via iTunes)
    3. Perform a hard reset on your iPod (Menu and select buttons)
    4. If your iPod is connected or disconnect it doesn't really matter, just make sure that it is ejected and not being used by iTunes.
    5. Install itunes again.
    6. Now iTunes is installed, it should see your iPod. (It may or may not try to sync. If is syncs let it, if not repeat step 3 with the iPod connected. This should facilitate it being seen by iTunes)
    7. Perform a restore.
    8. Just sit back and wait until it installs all the info back.
    I tried this method and it worked. My iPod and iTunes are in perfect unison as before.

    Don - Specifically, what problems were you having before your fix? I'm able to upgrade my 60GB iPod to firmware 1.2, but then it gets the scrambled screen and freezes. I downgraded to 1.1.2 and re-loaded 1.2 with the same results. So far I haven't located any fixes for this problem, which could be hardware related.

  • ITunes 11.1.3 issues - freezing during audio playback.

    Like many other folks on here, I'm having some playback issues with iTunes 11.1.3.
    Macbook (couple years old) 2.4 mhz 2 core- 4 gigs ram
    We use this computer primarily for music playback for dance classes and performances. Have run dozens of shows over the last year or so with zero issues.
    There *might* be a better playback software option, but iTunes doesn't get in the way with too many options, has (up until now) been rock solid, and has never let us down, and is less prone to user error causing huge WHOOPS during something important.
    That is, until 11.1.3. Didn't really notice any issues at first, but wife came home from a dress rehearsal Wednesday evening and complained - "it froze a couple of times while playing back Act 1. What's wrong with my computer?". (Act 1 - approx 50 minutes of music - 40ish total cuts).
    I looked at it - she had a ton of other stuff running - mail - wifi - DVDPlayer - iPhoto - you name it. I figured that was the problem, shut all the other stuff off, and figured it was solved.
    Nope - I'm running audio during our final tech rehearsal this evening before performances start in the morning.
    35 or 40 minutes in - froze again during a track.
    It just stopped - buttons became unresponsive - beachball came up - we waited a minute - and then it freaked out while trying to catch up with anything I had pressed, skipped around a bit, then resumed acting normal again.
    Took a short break - checked nothing else was running that didn't need to be and made some adjustments:
    Wifi off
    Cloud off
    Check downloads, sync, podcasts ... all off.
    Reset all warnings. Reset cache ( which took a surprising amount of time)
    Match and Genius, off
    Opened Acitvity Monitor and stopped any processes that were not essential
    Reboot ....
    Another 30 or 40 minutes later - froze again.
    Luckily, the lighting guy had a PC laptop with him. I quickly authorized his computer, transferred everything, and the rest of the evening went without a glitch.
    Not sure what to do next. I'm pretty sure it's NOT the computer.
    Disk checks OK. All hardware test are OK.
    Couple of observations:
    1. If I repair permissions - it finds a TON of messed up (?) iTunes permissions and fixes them. One day later, it find just as many again. What's up with that?
    2. If I watch disk access in the Actiity monitor during playback - on occassion there's a WRITE spike. Odd. What's it writing? This is with NOTHING ELSE running but iTunes, which didn't glitch during the spike, but still, what's that? A contributing factor? A clue?
    3. CPU and memory use looked OK. Haven't managed to get it to glitch again while I'm actually watching this though.
    Between what I've tried, and what I've read here, I'm pretty convinced our Macbook isn't at fault here. I'm pretty sure there's a problem with 11.1.3
    If anybody has other observations or suggestions, I'l love to hear them.

    Are these recent releases?
    I had troubles right after iTunes 10 came out because Digital copies were misreading "10" as "1" since the version check script was only looking for a single digit version number. Newer releases shouldn't have this, but if it's more than two years old, it might do this.

  • Itunes library is greyed out

    Hi,
    I hope someone can help as this has been driving me crazy the last few days.
    I imported some cd's into my itunes library & connected my ipod classic to my laptop (Win 7) expecting it to sync the music, it didn't. The music I imported is visible in my itunes library but is greyed out.
    I keep my music on my external (G) drive & itunes points to my G drive correctly i.e. Edit>Preferences>G:>itunes music folder. I'm runnning itunes ver 2.0.1 (this updates automatically). My G drive itunes folder contains all my music folders plus: itunes Library (database file) & Library XML doc file. My C drive itunes folder contains: Album Artwork Folder, itunes Media Folder, itunes Library Extras Folder, itunes Library Genius Folder, itunes Library File & itunes Music Library XML doc file.
    I've not experienced any problems before but it appears to have happened since the update.

    I'd try repairing permissions on your main drive. My guess is you'll see a long list of differing iTunes permissions. Also if you have a TM backup of that library from 6 months ago when you put it away you should be able to restore the itl file from that. But I'd try the permission repair first. If that works & iTunes lights up, make sure that it is pointing to the media file in the external drive and that "keep iTunes Media folder organized" & "copy files to iTunes..." are checked. All of these settings are in advanced preferences.
    Then run TM (or super duper or something) and back everything up (including the external drive).
