ITunes Ping in English in Netherlands

I am a foreigner living in Netherlands, connected to the iTunes store through a Netherlands credit card and an iPhone contract. I do not know Dutch quite well, and up to now, I could not find a decent way to show the iTunes store inside the application in English, but I was able to find my way somehow.
As Apple introduced iTunes Ping yesterday, I decided to give this new technology a try. The same problem with my iTunes store view persists in Ping: everything is in Dutch. For me, seeing Ping screens in Dutch is both inconsistent with the rest of the GUI and way harder to use. Is there any way out of this? Can I use the Dutch iTunes store, Ping and other services in English?
Thanks in advance.

I'm a Dutch guy living in Germany, a country full of non German speaking migrants and expats. Same problem here. I actually speak some German but I prefer English and I most definitely am not even remotely interested in buying German dubbed content that used to be in English via fully Germanized UI. Hence I'm not a paying customer on iTunes even though the US version of store has plenty of stuff I could be spending money on.
Apple, and many other companies, plain don't understand localization issues. I've seen web sites assume wrongly that I speak Finnish or German and ignoring all indications I can possibly give that I want to be addressed in English. Earlier today I saw Google make this assumption: in a fully US-en localized gmail it managed to play the promo movie for priority inbox in German.
Allow me to spell out the business case for Apple and others:
1) Automatic localization based purely on location (IP address based or otherwise) is likely to get it wrong quite often (think double digit percentages in some country). If you don't offer alternative localizations or make switching localization very hard, you are pretty much slamming the door shut in the face of a potentially paying customer.
2) The world is full of native and non native English speakers living in pretty much any country on the globe. For a US based company, that is a large group of potential customers that can be reached that are now forced to deal with your service in a language they may not even speak.
3) Apple has loads of English content, which barring licensing issues could be sold/served to people outside the US as well.
4) Many English speaking expats are in the "wealthy, willing to spend loads of whatever the local currency is" category. These people are extremely likely to be over represented in your sales stats. If only you could reach them.
5) Many non native English speaking expats (like me) actually do speak English pretty well. I actually prefer English localized over the usually quite awkward Dutch/German/whatever translations used in many web sites.
6) Many countries have large communities where English and secondary official languages are widely spoken. For example 5% of the Finnish population is Swedish speaking and Finland has a quite sizable expat community where English is widely used. In Germany, there are quite a few migrant minorities from e.g. Turkey or Russia (100K+ here in Berlin) in addition to the many expats from US, UK, etc.
7) Failing to address people in the correct language alienates them. They might never come back even when you finally do figure out how to do things properly.

I live in Germany, but want to access iTunes store in English - how?

    1. iTunes (the application on your Mac) can be in English - it generally follows what your Mac's preferences are.
    2. iTunes store or App Store (where you buy apps, music, films etc) - by default you will be sent to the French store if you are geographically connecting from France. This is only in French (except for the outer level menus) and priced in euros and has different stuff available for purchase or rent than the UK or US store.
You can change your account preferences to choose the UK store, but you need a billing address in the UK. Then you can use the UK store. You can browse the UK store without a UK account but you can't buy anything.
So basically if you are English-speaking but living in France, you have no choice but to read French on the site and choose from the few VO and VOST (original version and subtitled) films that are on offer. I believe there are other options as stated above if you have a pre-purchased card.

  • How do I chat in iTunes Ping?

Hey. I was wondering if there is a way you can chat with the people you follow on iTunes Ping. I have looked through all my stuff on ping, (profile, people, recent activity,) and none of it seems to have a link or button to chat. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

There is no "chat" feature in Ping.

  • ITunes Ping lost

    Hy together
A customer of mine lost his iTunes ping to update his feed. Is there a possibility to get a new ping?
    Many thanks!
    Robin

Just upload the revised version of the feed: iTunes takes 1-2 days to pick it up and I'm not entirely convinced that pinging makes any difference.
However, if you're really keen to send a ping: go to the iTunes Store page for the podcast. Control-click the podcast image and choose 'Copy URL to clipboard'.
Paste this into a text document, and note the numeric ID on the end (after the '=' sign).
Now copy this and paste into the address bar of your browser:
    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=FEEDID
Replace 'FEEDID' with the number you got from the Store, and hit return.

Go to terminal and past this:
defaults write com.apple.itunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE
To get it back type FALSE where TRUE is.

  • ITunes Ping 'Like' function

    Hi everyone,
For some time the 'Like" function of iTunes Ping in my Mac hasn't been functioning normally. When I'm in my own song library and click the Ping tab, clicking 'Like' doesn't cause Ping to post the update that I've liked a song to my Ping profile.
I know sometimes if iTunes Store doesn't offer the song which I clicked 'Like', it'll give me an error message. But I'm not talking of such a case. I'm talking about a song that is available in iTunes Store which I also own. Clicking 'Like' simply doesn't make Ping update my profile.
Does anyone have a similar problem or is it a bug? Can I solve it myself? Thanks in advance for your advice.
    James

    James,
Ping is not getting major usage, so it is possible that Apple is not aware of the problem.  I suggest that you report it via the Feedback page.

  • ITunes account in English Language for Korea

I have moved to Korea and I have a Korean credit card. I want to change my Apple iTunes account to Korea but in English language. Is that possible? How to go about it? Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Dont worry Richard. You can download every user manual in your favourite language from the Toshiba page. I did it many times
    Simply follow this:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com -> Support & Downloads -> Support homepage -> Toshiba User Manual
There you can choose the right user manual for your notebook

  • Why can't I change itunes language to english?

Everything is listed in french which I'm having a hard time understanding since it's not my strong point. How do I switch it to english? Has no english preference, but all other languages.
      Windows XP

Are you referring to iTunes itself, i.e. the menus and commands? Or are you referring to the language in the iTunes Music Store? If it's the iTMS you mean, look at the bottom of the main ITMS page for some text and a pulldown menu with round flag icons; pull that down to the one for your country.

  • Normally app store and ITunes should be English version. BUT my iPad mini is Malay version?

I had bought my iPad mini on 18-5-2013. I using App Store to download app.
Suddenly my App Store and iTunes changes to Malay version.
As I know, normally App Store and iTunes should be in English version.
    Awaiting your (Apple) soonest reply.

If you have another iOS device that is still in Enlish, use that one to find where the buttons are in Settings and press the same ones on your Malay iPad. If it were in Enlish, you would go into Settings>General>International (which is the third from the bottom since everything will probably be in Malay) > press Regian Format (the second choice from the bottom) and find United States on the list. If you need to change the language, do that too.
 Thank you for choosing Apple.

  • Living in Japan, but need itunes store in English!

    Itunes is displaying Japanese content.
It makes sense, I AM in Japan, but I want (need!) content on my favourite bands, not Japanese bands. And I can't read Japanese yet; So I'd really like the store to appear in ENGLISH.
Does anyone know how I can tell itunes I want store content based on another country (US, NZ, Canada, UK or even Australia) or even just force it to display the Japanese store in English?
    Please?
    Phil,
    New Zealander in Japan

To change the store view to another country open iTunes and click on Music Store, scroll to the bottom of the main pane and you'll see a drop down men box with a flag beside it. Click on the flag and then choose yours or the one you want to see from the window that opens.
