ITunes playlist file

Can someone tell me the location of the playlist file? I need to restore my playlist.
Here's the story:
I was completing backups of my Macbook to an external drive using SuperDuper!. I just finished rebuilding my Macbook to complete a fresh restart of the OS and clean out a bunch of junk I had installed over the past year. I've completed all OS and application updates. I am now at the point of restoring all of my data, including my music.
iTunes has already been setup to view my Music library with all of my restored music included, I just need to restore my playlist so that I do not have to recreate everything. Currently, my music library is stored on a different external drive and iTunes can see this library with no problems.
How can I recreate my playlist easily?
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I did find a thread that states that the playlist file is in the following directory: /Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist
However, I tried replacing this file with the file I had backed up on my external drive but it did not restore my playlist in iTunes. I did confirm the file (by viewing with Textedit) had my playlist in it.

hi Ed,
i don't beleive there are anything else to come. the playlists info are stored in the iTunes library files. if you open it and that you playlist are no longer there... you may start to redo them.
if your playlist are very important, you may consider this method of backing them up; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93763

  • HT203164 Error trying to burn a CD from an iTunes playlist - files not found on hard drive??

I have a new computer with Windows 8 Home Premium.  Before the old computer crashed, I had backed up all my iTunes Media in the cloud.  I had also purchased a soundtrack album from the iTunes store and put the songs into a playlist.  All media was matched with the new computer, and the new computer was authorized by me in iTunes, so all my previous media shows up in iTunes on the new computer.  The only symbol next to the song titles in iTunes for all my songs is a picture of a tiny cloud.
When I play the songs in the playlist from the new computer in iTunes, they all play just fine.  However, when I try to burn a CD with the songs in the playlist, I get this error message (it has no number associated with it):  The song "[name of song]" could not be burned because the file cannot be found on the computer hard drive.  I tried burning CD's from any other playlist but was not able to burn a CD from ANY playlist; I get the same error message no matter what I try to do.  I would really like to be able burn CD's from iTunes, because that's what plays in my car.  Hooking up an iPod in the car does play music, but it is faded and of bad quality (my car is an '05 model).
Does anyone have any ideas on what is wrong here and how I can fix it so burning CD's in iTunes will again be an option?  I don't burn many CD's but would really like to be able to do so.  The version of iTunes I have is 11, all the iTunes files are updated, and the CD drive is working fine,  I am able to play CD's in iTunes from it and burn other songs to it using another media player.  I am also using top-quality new blank CD's, and when trying to burn a CD from a playlist, I select Audio CD with 2 seconds for the gap between songs, and the album text, then I select Burn.  I've tried selecting other options in turn, but get the same error message.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help with this issue - it seems I am the only one having it.

I actually solved this problem myself.  I discovered, while playing around with the new iTunes, that clicking on PLAYLISTS on the menu bar shows the playlists that I have created on the left side of the window (like the old iTunes used to do by default).  I scrolled down to the playlist I wanted to burn to a CD, right-clicked on it, and a menu came up.  I selected DOWNLOAD....this downloads my playlist songs from the cloud to my computer hard drive.  After that, the little "cloud pictures" next to my songs disappeared, and I was able to burn the CD with no problems.
I hope this helps someone else....I was quite lost for a while.  Which is amazing, considering how user-friendly most Apple products have historically been.

Is there a way to prevent iTunes from automatically starting the next playlist file on the iPad?

When you connect the device open iTunes and select it from the sidebar. Click on the Summary tab in the main window. Uncheck the option to automatically connect to iTunes. You will find it in the collection of options near the lower part of the window.

  • I have an iPod Classic 5th Gen.  After 1 month I've lost all my music and playlist files.  The only files left are music I have purchased from iTunes.  How do I restore my music library to my iPod?

I have an iPod Classic 5th Generation.  I have not used it for about one month.  When I turned it on, I had lost all my music and playlist files.  The only thing left on the iPod was the music and audio books I have purchased from iTunes store.  I tried to delete everything on the ipod by sliding the hold button and then pressing the center button and the menu and I saw the apple logo on the screen but the iPod wouldn't reboot.  Any suggestions as to how I can delete everything on the iPod and then plug it into my computer to restore my music library?  I am using a Windows 7 operating system.

Does both your Windows and Macbook iTunes have the same library of songs?
if it  does then, much easier to proceed, else try to load the Macbook with the same library as Windows.
Note that only one of the Macbook USB port is good for iPod Classic, the other is too slow and may cause timeout, and I would suggest disconnect all other USB devices, while you Restore or Sync the iPod Classic.
Connect the iPod to the Mac, (if iTunes launch, please close it back.)
Use Disk Utility -> select the iPod Device->First Aid->Repair (use option FAT32)
After the Repair complete, eject the iPod.
    Connect back to the Mac
When iTunes launch, Restore the iPod when Prompted, (use FAT32)
    Sync your library.
    Good Luck!

I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes wants to  deletes all data off of my iphone so i click cancel
i want to update to iOS 5 and still have itunes be able to copy my playlists from my iphone. for free. why does apple provide a recovery from iphone option?

If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer.  This restores the library and device association files.  If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

I have uploaded an old itunes library by mistake - any way that I can go back to my previous library.  Unable to do a system restore and I don't know where to find an up to date music/playlist file.  I was originally trying to recover a playlist that vanished after I had updated one of the ipads, did an online search, followed the instructions only to discover that I had loaded an itunes library from 2 years ago.  Stupidly I thought that it had updated itself and didn't realise I had to do it.  Any he

    Hi, InsaneCharlie.
Thanks for the question.  I see you have uninstalled iTunes and want this program back.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes if present and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.  If none of your data was modified in the iTunes media folder, then your data should be present upon installation.

  • Adding iTunes playlist as separate file in iDVD

I am creating a DVD using video created in iMovie. In addition to the movie, I would like to include a separate file of the music (something like a soundtrack in the form of an iTunes playlist) that can be accessed through the main menu. I have not been able to find an answer in iDVD Help.
How about adding a folder of the photos that were used to make the movie/slideshow?
Can either of these be done?

You can add music files to the DVD-Rom section of the Dvd but you won't be able to access the files unless it's from a computer (since the dvd rom section isn't readable on most set top dvd players).
You can add audio to slideshows ie "Fit Slides to Audio" or you can add audio as a separate track within the video editing application (iMovie). However, iDvd wasn't really designed as a video editing app (apple leaves this function to apps like i-Movie, FCP, FCE, etc.)
Essentially, iDvd is to iMovie what the candy wrapper is to a chocolate bar. It's simply the exterior packaging of the movie you made in iMovie or FCP.
frankly I normally use a CD for all audio files (that or an iPod). But if you want to write audio files to a Dvd then consider an app like Roxio toast and make an audio disc.
An audio disc is a CD or DVD that contains audio files. Audio discs are meant to be played in a home or car stereo, in a set-top DVD player, and can also be used in a Macintosh or Windows computer.
or select from these types of audio disc
    Types of Audio Discs:
Toast can create many kinds of audio discs - more than any other Mac burning software.
    • Audio CD: This CD can be played in most home or car stereo CD players, set-top DVD players, and computers. This is similar to a standard commercial CD you can purchase in music stores. This is the best choice for playback in a CD player. See Making an Audio CD.
    • Music DVD: This DVD can be played in a set-top DVD player or in a Macintosh or a Windows computer with a DVD player. A music DVD can contain over 50 hours of music and has full navigation menus for song selection. This is the best choice for playback in a DVD player. See Making a Music DVD.
    • MP3 Disc: This CD or DVD can be played in home or car stereo MP3 disc players, some set-top DVD players, and most Macintosh and Windows computers. MP3 discs have longer playing times than audio CDs but their playback is less universal. See Making an MP3 Disc.
    • Enhanced Audio CD: This CD can be played in a home or car stereo CD player. It contains additional data content, which is accessible in a Macintosh or Windows computer. See Making an Enhanced Audio CD.
    • Mixed Mode CD: This CD can be played in a Macintosh or Windows computer. It offers playback compatibility with older CD-ROM players and is rarely used. Enhanced Audio CD is a better choice for this type of disc. See Making a Mixed Mode CD.

Older Zens don't support AAC, which is the format iTunes uses for songs.
You can convert from AAC to MP3, which every media player under the sun will play.  Here's a tutorial: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10096807-49.html

  • When I add a playlist file in iTunes, they do no appear in my library but do appear in the playlist

    Hi all.
Not been on here in ages so please be gentle!
Just a question with itunes. Im using lion and everything is updated. If i have a folder with music files in it and a playlist file, if I drag the playlist file into itunes it will appear under the playlist heading with all of the files there. However if I goto my library and look for the files, they do not appear.
Is this normal, I can't say I ever remember this happening before!
    Thanks for your help!

I found a work around by manually adding each song in the order I want to the shuffle.  As long as I disconnect the iPod without ejecting or syncing, it will stay in the order I want.  I have also discovered that when I create new playlists, I have the same problem with the alphabetical order of artists.  Is there a setting I may be missing?

  • Moved files to 'F-drive', but iTunes playlists still looking for 'D-drive'

I've just reconfigured my hard drives and moved my iTunes folder to my F-drive. All of my playlists are still looking for teh old D-drive.
Is teher a way of modifying the playlist files?
    Thanks,

I've had this problem too. Only way I know is either use smart play lists or rebuild your play lists from scratch
If anybody else has a solution or a program that can resolve this it would be great.

  • Copying Music Files and iTunes Playlists Onto New Computer

I just received my new MacBook Pro and am going to need to copy my music files, iTunes playlists, etc. from my existing PC to my new MacBook Pro. Can anyone recommend some good/definitive articles or posts on how to do this seamlessly?
One thing I should note is that while I keep a lot of my music in my iTunes folder, I also keep a lot of it in other folders on my hard drive, and I'd strongly prefer to maintain this file organization. I'm hoping this won't cause any issues with the transition. I also really, really, really hope I'm able to cleanly transition my playlists without having to manually recreate anything, as I have hundreds of playlists that I've spent literally thousands of hours curating!
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

if i were you, i would move my complete library to the Mac first. you can easily move content to different locations later on. please post back if you want to know more.
    my reasons are these:
    1) as the articles i linked above outline, it is not as simple as +drag & drop+ if you want to retain playlists, ratings, etc. when making the move from winsloth to Mac. check this thread for possible problems: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11495714#11495714.
    2) it is generally better to let iTunes do the moving of files. if you do his manually, chances are iTunes will lose track of their location.
well, you might want to wait and see if another user comes up with a brighter idea
    good luck !

  • Itunes/ Playlists backup/ Cannot import xml file./error message (50)

    Hello there,
My itunes crashed so I'm trying to reinstall it. I do have a huge library, (>50K tracks) and have manual backups, but cannot using the library auto save since it would mean more than 100 dvd .
I copied all music files to external hard drive. I've exported my library to get the xml file to backup all my playlists.
    I've reinstalled Itunes.
I've added folder to the library to get all my tracks and it worked.
Surprinsingly, all my playlists appear in Itunes, but they are all empty.
I've used import list function to get the xml file and playlists but get constantly this message :
"il est impossible d'importer le fichier bibliotheque itunes
une erreur inconnue s'est produite (-50)"
Impossible to import the itunes library file, unknown error appeared (50)
I've tried with older xml files (maybe 5 or 6 old ones) and it's always the same. What are the solutions to get my playlists back ?
I guess the problem would probably come from itunes version conflict (between 8 9 or 10). Should I try to get an old version of Itunes, compatible with my xml file ?
Is there a way to convert my xml file in another format so that Itunes can read it ?
This is the only huge weakness of this amazing software.
    Thanks.

This bug did in fact appear for many of us when we upgraded to iTunes 7.3.
Here 's a lengthy thread that discusses some possible solutions.
For what it's worth, I uninstalled 7.3 and rolled back to an earlier version of iTunes.

  • My old computer crashed and deleted my iTunes media file with all my playlist. However, my iPod has the playlist I lost on the computer. How can I replace (reverse synch?) my iPod media information back onto my (now reinstalled) virgin iTunes media folder

My old computer crashed and deleted my iTunes media file with all my playlist. However, my iPod has the playlist I lost on the computer. How can I replace (reverse synch?) my iPod media information back onto my (now reinstalled) virgin iTunes media folder?

Yes it's possible to sync music back from a iPod back into iTunes that (I assume) wasn't purchased on the iTunes Store.
Apple allows iTunes Store purchases on devices to be reversed back into iTunes, just not cd rips and stuff like that. For that it's a one way trip to the device from iTunes.
I likely can't suggest such software here, but if you visit iLounge you can ask what is the latest software that works for your platform.
Really it only takes a mere few minutes to backup your iTunes Library and stick in a few cd/dvd's or a external drive. iTunes even has a menu command for it to make it oh so simple. Please use it and backup all your data.
Hard drives fail, computers burn up, thieves steal, stuff gets forgotten. Plan for something happening because it will.
    Good Luck
