ITunes Playlist order

I'm trying to change the order of songs in a playlist and they bounce back to the original order...What's the trick?  Thanks!

Also make sure that the sort indicator (the little black triangle) is above the first column, i.e. the column of numbers.  If it isn't, click to put it there.
If the triangle is above any other column, the list will stay sorted by that thing, and you will not be able to drag tracks up or down.

  • Keeping my itunes playlist order after I sync to iPod Nano 7th Gen

So I created a playlist but I am having trouble keeping the order of songs after I sync. I have tried rating them as well but as soon as I sync, Alphabetical order is what I get. Any thoughts?

In iTunes, go to your playlist.  On the playlist, click on its column header row at the far left end, above the column with sequential numbers below.  That sorts the playlist by playlist order, and you can change the song order by dragging songs around on the list.  You may have done this already.
If you sync this playlist to the iPod, it should appear in that order on the iPod.
If it does not, you may not be looking at the playlist on the iPod.  If you select the list of All Songs on the iPod, it will be in alphabetical order.  Even if you only have one playlist synced to the iPod, the All Songs list is not the playlist.  If you select the playlist on the iPod, it should be in playlist order.

  • ITunes playlist order sync help?

Okay, so I have my music in my playlist setup to organize my music by the date they were added. New music I add is always at the top of the playlist. When I use to sync my iPhone it would be in that order on my phone too, newest songs that were added were on top. I upgraded to iOS 5 now my playlist on my phone are in alphabetical order. On iTunes it is still in the order I would like it to be. Does anyone know how I could fix this? It's not really a big deal but I prefer the way it is on iTunes. I was working before and I just want it to be like that now..
    Thanks in advance.

For a Most Recently Added Playlist for music on iPhone 4, iOS 5.0, iTunes 10.5 (141), Here's what worked for me after lots of experimenting:
To Create a "100 Newest" playlist:
    1. In iTunes, delete any previous 'X Newest" playlists if they've not been syncing correctly since iOS 5 update, especially if they have referenced other playlists. In my experience if these playlists are not syncing in the correct order, there is nothing you can do to make them sync in the correct order - cut your losses and delete.
    2. In iTunes under 'Library' in the sidebar, select 'Music"
    3. From the 'File' menu select 'New Smart Playlist'
    4. In the pop up box that appears, check 'Match the following rule:'
    5. In the next line, in the pop-up menus, select the following: 'Media Kind', 'is', 'Music'
    6. Check the "Limit to" checkbox and enter the '100' in the box, and then select the follwing option in succeeding popup lists: 'items', selected by 'most recently added'
7.You may check either or both of the options 'Match only checked items' and 'Live updating' - in my experiments these had no effect.
    8. Click 'OK' and name your smartlst '100 Newest' or anything you'd like.
    Here's something to note:
In your iTunes 'Music Library', the sort order is newest song at the top of your library when the LIBRARY is sorted by 'Date Added' and the small triangle has it's apex pointing down.  To me this means the LATEST song is on top.
In your '100 Newest' playlist, to sort so the newest song is at the top of the playlist when the PLAYLIST is sorted by 'Date Added' , you'll note the triangle is oriented with the apex pointing up. To me this signifies the 'YOUNGEST ADDED' song is on the top.
However you view those two items, it's interesting that you'd expect the sort order might be reversed according to the triangle orientations, but it's not. And that's one of the sorting problems I had with syncing my playlists - newest were on the bottom on my iPhone playlist, but on the top in the playlist in my iTunes Library.  Certainly not a consistant user interface.
Also note that if you've used a previous hint in referencing a dated order playlist to avoid a previous iTunes playlist syncing bug, those lists now won't sort properly any longer.  As I said - cut your losses and start anew.
Hope this helps someone else. It took me a long time to get right.

  • How do I randomize a playlist order in iTunes 11.0.1.12?

I recently updated my computer software (iTunes included, obviously) and have come to realize that this new version does not give me the abilities that the previous versions have.  I wiped my iPod clean to start from scratch, as it was full and I was hoping to put newer material on it, and when I went to load a playlist and shuffle it for playback order, I realized that the shuffle button, which is what I used before, is no longer available.  How do I shuffle a playlist order or track order or whatever, within a playlist, so I could copy it to the play order and sync it to my iPod?

I'm still not sure what this option (to shuffle a Playlist and then Sync that to the iPod) was or where it was in iTunes 10. This is despite your question having been raised by other people.
Surely, since you can shuffle a Playlist on an iPod, it's not necessary to shuffle it before Syncing, is it?

  • I want to change the top level order of itunes playlists

This is rather odd problem.  There is a lot of information available regarding organising tracks within playlists but I want o change the top level order of the playlist themselves.
I have an ipod to car CD player adaptor that can select itunes playlists as if they were  single CDs.  The problem is that the adaptors works through the list of itune playlists in order i.e. the first "CD" is the "classical music smart playlist" followed by the other default smart playlists and then by my own playlists.  What I want is force the smart playlists to the bottom of the top level list so that the adaptor finds my playlists first.  I am considering deleting all smart playlists but I see some value in keeping them.  I think the answer is no it can't be done but I be interested to hear if anyone has some ideas on this.
N.B. I am using itunes 12.01.26 on my Macbook to manage my itunes library.

Hey guys m I got the answer for the below question.
Oracle have few Restriction and limitation on such Advanced table in sorting the data,
Few of them are as mentioned below ...
    1. Sorting is not allowed for tables that allow inserts.
    2. Sorting is not supported for tables containing updateable columns
    3. Sorting is disabled when the Select column is checked for a row in a table or when Hide/Show is present in a table.
Because of the above limitations , we cannot sort or override the existing alphabetical name sort order to Date applied sort order on the View Applicant advanced table.
You can observe that , View Applicant page is having an option called "Update Status" which allow us to update applicant’s status or rating in the Advanced table.
On such updatable advanced tables, oracle does not allow us to override the sort order on any of the table columns.
Keeping it in a nutshell , I can say it's does not allow us to change the sort order of the view applicant advanced table ( which is having updateable columns ) to sort them in Date applied instead of Name( which is default ).

  • The playlist order on iTunes does not match the playlist order on my iPhone!!

Okay, I have been browsing discussion threads for the past two hours and nothing seems to be working!
I have essentially two playlists that I would like on my iPhone. One is the "purchased" folder that is automatcially created when you buy a song. I have it arranged by "date added". The second playlist I want is called "music library"... there I have simply copy and pasted all my songs into a playlist and sorted them by "play count". However, no matter what I do (ie. switching the order from starting from the "lowest play count" to the "highest play count", starting new smart playlists with the "playlist is music" criteria, and right clicking the playlist and clicking "copy to play order") NOTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING!! Please help me, I just want them in the order I have them on iTunes.
    Thank you!

I had the same problem but got my playlists synced perfectly a few nights ago. i did a few things at a time so i'm not sure which exactly did it. my playlists were coming up in reverse order on my iPhone. Most played appeared starting with the least of the most played. With the iPhone plugged into the computer, the iPhone appears in itunes. When i expanded it, i saw eclaimation marks near a few of the smart playlists. the error message was something along the lines of "could not sync playlist becuase it relies on another playlist that could not be found".
Now my smart playlists still had the fix from way back when you had to add a condition saying playlist is Music, and it seemed that the playlists "Music" not being on the device confused it somewhat. so i modified my smart playlists to not rely on any other smart playlists, unsynced and resynced those playlists from my phone and it all came up perfectly from then on, no problems for the last few days.
I think it's an ios bug as syncing another phone on older ios4 got the playlist order perfectly before all of these changes i made. Hope that helps someone, it was driving me nuts for weeks.

Any more information?  Is this how you are seeing it in iTunes, or on a different player?  What kind of CD?  Standard audio?  MP3-CD?

PLAYLIST PROBLEM: I did a playlist and after synchonising with my ipod, the order of the songs changed both in itunes and in the ipod. In itunes the order came alphabetically and in ipod randomly. I wanted that playlistto be played in the order I made it for a party.
Now I don't know what to do.
    Thank you very much

Plug your iPod in and when it appears in iTunes, click on it from under Devices in the left hand pane.  This brings you to the Summary tab.  Locate and click on the Music tab.  What configurations do you have made from under this tab?  Is your iPod configured to sync those playlists?

  • How can I get my ipad to reflect the same playlist order that appears on my computer?

How can I get my ipad to reflect the same playlist order that appears on my computer?  My computer has the exact desired order of playlist, but once the system is synced, the ipad does not reflect the propper order.

In iTunes with your playlist shown in the correct order, right-click on the playlist name in the side-bar and click Copy to Play Order. Enable the side-bar with CTRL+S if necessary. Sync. Note also that the column you are sorting on should have the small triangle pointing upwards, otherwise the songs will play in the reverse order. You may also find that you need to first remove, and then add back the playlist to the device if syncing doesn't update it properly. See this post for more.

  • Sorting Playlist order?

This may be a ridiculous question but can you sort a playlist in iTunes that will show up other than in the order a song was added or track listing? I've tried reserving a playlist order so the most recent tracks added appear at the beginning of the list but it won't keep that order once synced to the ipod. Basically I'm just trying to keep the most recent songs on top. I'm thinking there's an easy way to do this and I'm just missing it.
Any advice is appreciated, sorry if this is a very newb question,
    Thank you,
    Jason

In your smart playlist settings, set a limit for the number of tracks in the list (but make it higher than you'll need if you don't actually want a limit), then pick the order you want the tracks to be in from the "selected by" drop down.
For some reason this hasn't been working for play count (and so presumably might not work for some other options, if definitely works if you arrange by album), so try turning off live updating on a top 25 type list.

  • Playlist order on Nano

I notice that I can set a playlist order in Itunes in various ways (using the arrows at the top of the columns). Howeverm the order in Itunes does not transfer to the Nano. Anyone know how to do this?
p.s. I think the order is governed my the Music folder directly. But does this mean you must select a "global" order for all plylists?

Well, I have done that - pretty intuitive actually and it is easy to manipulate in iTunes. That is a strength.
But now I can't seem to get a playlist onto the Nano. I select 'Music' on the iPod in iTunes, drag a playlist from iTunes (which was created and named on iTunes as discussed), but end up with only the songs - no playlist - on the Nano .
I have the latest SW on iTunes and iPod.
    Thanks...Gary

  • Export itunes playlist on SD card

Hi, I want to export a playlist from itunes on to an SD card. Is there a way to do this (other than drag&drop or Copy/Paste) so that I can keep the order in which the tracks are organised on my itunes playlist?

Basically it's the file naming structure that's important.  Ignore burning instructions.
Do not rename the copies used by iTunes!  Put them on your card and rename those copies.
You will have to read your car's manual for what it says about media playback.  Just about every player is different.

  • Xfer iTunes playlist to GB3 w/few keystrokes...

I wish to transfer a playlist from iTunes to GB3 with a few keystrokes. Right now I have to drag each song to the timeline. Much too time consuming. I also want each song to be staggered onto two tracks. So when I want to download to disk it will all be in order. Does this make sense?
I'm using GB3 to make radio shows and I need to cut down the production time. Having the sucessive song tracks staggered on to two GB tracks makes editing and other work easier, for me anyway. I already have to set volumes and fades not to mention voiceover work. Is there any software or program that will let me do this? I don't think Automator will do this, could be wrong though.
    Thanks.
    iMac 17   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Good luck, but I don't think something like that exists. And if you want to do fades, you'll have to adjust the regions anyway.
Is it an alternative to capture the iTunes playlist (with fades) in something like Audio Hijack, so you have one audio file that you import into GB to do your voiceovers?
(And you're right, dragging out of iTunes (as opposed to the Finder) only transfers one song into GB. So I'm afraid you'll have to do it one by one. Or grab all the songs in the playlist, drag them to a folder on the Desktop, and import the whole folder content in one run into GB. You'll lose the song order, though.)

  • ITunes Playlist not organized the same way in iPhone?

I have my playlist organized in a chronological order for my podcast. Oldest first to newest last. My iPhone playlist is alphabetical? How can I have my playlist match my iTunes playlist in a chronological order?

the reason is that this is a bug, for playlists, smart playlists, and podcasts for many users.
It has been around for a while, and you can find all sorts of discussions about it in this forum, the ipod forum, and the itunes forum.
everybody keeps hoping that apple will fix it in the next firmware update, but there have been a few since then and it still hasn't been fixed.
the tip i posted works for playlists and smart playlists, my podcasts used to have the same problem but then for some reason they didn't.
are your regular/smart playlists messed up as well, or is it just podcasts?
