ITunes playlist songs disappear when selected to play

iTunes playlist songs disappear when selected to play - ie double-clicked, or clicked once and then play selected. The song doesn't play although there is a brief 'flash' of something at the top of the screen where you would normally see the song details mwhile playing.
The song is not deleted from the library but is still missing from the playlist when iTunes is restarted.

I just recently upgraded to iTunes 9 and have found that some songs (18 of 750) will no longer play. I get a couple different error messages, one saying iTunes cannot find the URL for the song and another saying iTunes cannot find the file for the song. I hate to pay for these songs again since I already purchased them from the iTunes store, but I don not know what other options are available. Has anyone had this problem and if so, is there a way to fix these songs?
Usually that occurs when the file, or one of its containing folders, is moved, renamed, or deleted. If you remember doing one of those things, see if you can put it back the way it was. Otherwise, search on your hard drive for the song file, and re-add it to your library.

If only one song is doing that, that suggests the track is damaged.
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • !s by songs disappear when played

The latest iTunes issue is that, after moving all my songs to iCloud (i have iTunes Match) and removing them my Macbook, an ! shows up by the song. When I go to play the song, I am asked if I want to locate the song. I hit Cancel, the song plays, and the ! disappears.
Do I have to do this for every song now? The !s are scattered randomly in my large iTunes library.

I don't have iTunes Match and don't use iCloud so I can't speak for that.  Normally if you see a ! by a song it means iTunes has a reference for it but the actual file was missing when iTunes last checked (usually at startup).  If you click on it and it suddenly plays it means the file has reappeared.  A common situation for this is where somebody has media on an external drive and their library files on the internal drive.  They start up iTunes without the external drive fully mounted and iTunes doesn't see the files, but then they start the drive and when you click on the track and iTunes has another look it is suddenly there and plays.  I know you didn't say this was your scenario but maybe there's something else going on similar to this.  Do you manually manage media, or keep media on separate volumes?
How did you remove the files from your Macbook?  Again, I don't have Match but I thought some other icon would appear for those songs.

By the way, I hope you have your files archived on a drive at home too.  Match is a convenience feature but not a place to store your only copy of music.

  • Only half of some iTunes Matched songs on my iPhone will play, then audio skips to next song in playlist!

Several (maybe 5%) of iTunes Matched songs on my iPhone do this... at EXACTLY 1/2 way through the song.
EXAMPLE: At 2:25 of a 4:50 long song (Shania Twain - From This Moment) the next song in playlist (Taylor Swift - Tim McGraw) starts as the audio skips to beginning of next song in playlist.  Oddly, Shania's attractive album artwork and title stays up while Taylor's tune plays (?)
When the timeline for the first Shania song hits the end, the artwork slides to Taylor Swift's CD Cover art and the timer slider adjusts to near the end of that song.
When I play same songs on the same playlist on iTunes (also downloaded from iTunes Match) this does not occur.
Does anyone else see this happen or are there any suggestions?
    THANKS
    geo

Hey Guys, from my late model iPhone 4, I am also seeing my iTunes Match songs terminate playing very abruptly ...some won't play at all ...others skip to the next track after 10 seconds.
I checked the source files on my iMAC, and they are 100 percent perfect.
Tried deleting them, recreating them, signing out and then back into iTunes with Match On & Off, etc ...still no resolution to these problems.
Maybe the MATCH product is crashing under it's own weight now?   It used to be good, but now I am not so sure anymore.
Please post if you have any solution or suggestions.
    Thanks!

  • ITunes Changes Song Titles When I drop Them In a Playlist

I am using ITunes 10.2.1 When I drag a song to a playlist if there are numbers in the title iTunes deletes the numbers ex. "1. MySong" becomes "Mysong".  I like the numbers in there to keep track of the song order visually.  How do I fix this?

I have the same problem. Also, I don't want to store everything in a Artist / Album folder/directory, but in what is for classical music more logical: Composer / Album / Artist (= orchestra & conductor or soloist or the like). But also keep in mind that some characters are not allowed in naming a Windows-folder or filename. These characters are: \ / : * ? " | This is typical for any Windows-version (even Windows 7 32bit or 64bit). When you use these characters in iTunes, they will be changed in a '_'. E.g.: Bach: Matthaüspassion in iTunes will be in the Windows folder Bach_ Matthäuspassion.
Also, the total lenght of a filename in Windows (any Windows-version) is max. 256 characters, including folders and subfolders. So, even you change iTunes for another program for ripping and organizing your music like Mediamonkey, these limitations stand. Mediamonkey is not truncating the filenames into a maximum of 32 characters. iTunes has nevertheless the advantage using the CDDB-Gracenote database for its metadata and not FreeDB like the most of the other music library organizers. Although far from perfect, the Gracenote metadata are much more consistent for classical music than the FreeDB metadata. FreeDB is good for modern music, but it's crap for classical music. Less known alternatives like MusicBrainz are also rather consistent, but are too small. To give an idea: Gracenote and FreeDB have both metadata of more than 90 million cd's. MusicBrainz has only 8 million.

  • I see songs in my ipod in itunes but some disappear when I disconnect it.

I have over 1500 songs on my ipod. Recently I have noticed that although some songs I have already added are seen as if they were already in my ipod on iTunes, some songs can't be found when I try to find them in my ipod when it is not connected to my computer. I mean how come I can see 3 songs of
one artist on iTunes when I go to "David's ipod"s song list but only one when my ipod is not connected? it is crazy!
Note: Yes all the songs are under the same artists, no spelling mistakes.

Do they ALL have album names?

  • What do the bouncing bars in the iTunes display window represent when music is playing? Volume of particular frequencies in a stereo field maybe?

I've noticed that songs that I think are recorded really well, as far as good and clear instrument or voice placement in the stereo field, have all the bars bouncing like one big happy family. I'd like to learn what they are showing so that I can replicate that same kind of bounce in the songs I write, mix and master. I think that it would be a great reference tool for me as I develop a song.
It's seems clear that the two sets of bars ( 20 bars each ) are the left and right stereo fields, and I've assumed that bars rising vertically represent the volume of an instrument at that particular pan of the stereo field. But, I've been unsuccessful in being able to control which bars bounce with songs I've recorded and played through iTunes. I've tried panning both mono and stereo tracks.
Can anyone help me here? Thanks!

    Do the following two things:
In the left-hand pane, right-click the name of the playlist, choose Edit Smart Playlist, and make sure that "Live Updating" is checked.
In the list itself, click the column header for "Last Played" so that the list will sort according to when it was played, with most recent on top.

  • "cannot find songs online" when trying to play/import from cd.

When trying to play/import a cd I get "cannot find songs online" message. Only Track # & time are displayed. When trying to get cd info I get "not registered for online use" message. Never did this before. Thanx in advance for any help.

The "not recognized for on-line use" error is associated with the Gracenote service that iTunes uses to look up and retrieve metadata for CDs.  Some users have reported that this error occurs when trying to import from CD, subsequent to upgrading to version 12 (though the number of reports has reduced significantly since 12.1 was released).  A number of slightly different solutions have been reported (though all of a similar nature).
Try walking through the following steps - before starting you may have to enable hidden files and folders to be viewed - in Windows 7 / Windows Explorer select Organize > Folder and search options, then on the View tab make sure that Show hidden files, folders and drives is selected.  I don't have a Vista system to check whether its different, but you may need to:
Select Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization
    Click Folder Options
    Select the View tab
Under Advanced Settings, click Show hidden files and folders, then click OK.
Without this you won't see the AppData folder in C:\Users\username\.
    Exit iTunes
In Windows Explorer, go to the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
    Delete the following files:
    CD Info.cidb
    com.apple.iTunes.Gracenote.plist
    Restart iTunes
Insert a CD and see if details are now correctly retrieved from Gracenote
    If this doesn't work:
In iTunes, select Edit > Preferences and make a note (or take a screenshot) of your preferences settings in all relevant tabs
    Exit iTunes
In Windows Explorer, go to the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
    Delete the following file:iTunesPrefs.xml
    Restart iTunes
Insert a CD and see if details are now correctly retrieved from Gracenote
If this second procedure does work, you'll need to restore other iTunes preferences settings to those that you noted in step 1.
    If this one didn't work:
    Exit iTunes
    Check the following folders:
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Apple Computer\iTunes
Delete any copies of the following files:
    CD Info.cidb
    com.apple.iTunes.Gracenote.plist
    iTunesPrefs.xml
    Restart iTunes
Insert a CD and see if details are now correctly retrieved from Gracenote
Again, if this procedure does work, you'll need to restore other iTunes preferences settings to those that you noted in step 1 of the second procedure.
If you're still not able to retrieve CD info:
    Exit iTunes
In Windows, select Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.  Find the entry for iTunes, right-click and select Repair.
When this process has finished, restart iTunes
Insert a CD and see if details are now correctly retrieved from Gracenote
If none of these have worked (and almost everything I've seen suggests you should be OK by this point), you may have an issue with the installation and configuration of iTunes itself.  If you have got this far, see turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for advice on how to remove and replace of all components of iTunes.

  • Purchased Playlist Song Order When Purchasing New Songs

I recently transferred my music (including my purchased playlist) to my new computer. Everything runs fine, but I cannot figure out how to change the preferences on my purchased playlist. Previously, when I downloaded songs via the iTunes Store, they showed up at the top of the playlist (#1). However, now, they show up as the very last song in the playlist, which I dont like. I want to see the newest purchases at the top of the playlist. I've tried clicking the arrow above the numbers, to reverse the order, which works, but then when I purchase another song, it still puts it at the bottom of the list. How do I change it so that the most recent purchases show at the top of the list?

Sort by *Date Added* and click the triangle so it's pointing down.

  • ITunes playlists suddenly disappeared

    Hi
after working well for at least a year (even with Lion 10.7.4) all my playlists suddenly disappeared. I followed advise (from OSX Daily website) and quit iTunes (10.6.1), moved 'iTunes Music Library.xml' and 'iTunes Library.itl' folders to desktop and re-imported and started iTunes again, whereupoon I expected to see my playlists restored, BUT instead this re-import process seemed to automate a completly new duplication of all the mp3 s into the Media folder, as if by some default.
To be clear, I keep all my mp3's in Music / iTunes Music. I think iTunes really wants me to keep my mp3 files in Music / iTunes / iTunes Media / Music as this directory recongnises games and other forms of revenue for Apple but I elected to keep my files seperately and iTunes does say it allows me to do this by duly selecting the path in Preferences / Advanced, and un-check the 'keep Media folder organised' radio button...... and this has worked pretty well ....until two days ago. So what has happened to disturb the peace?
    Grateful for any advice here.

  • ITunes Makes Songs Disappear!?

I have created an iMix with songs that I have purchased from iTunes. Low and behold some of the songs do not appear in my iMix. Why is this you ask? The songs I purchased from iTunes have completely disappeared from iTunes. What are they trying to pull here? Singles, EPs, parts of albums all gone. . .

Content comes and goes from the iTunes Store all the time, without warning. It may be that Apple was unable to obtain the missing tracks (or at least some of them) from the record company in iTunes Plus format and so the tracks were removed when the iTunes Store officially went "all iTunes Plus" a couple of weeks ago.

  • ITunes playlists, song ratings gone in 10.4 under Lion

Im in a crysis here. My iTunes Libaray is gone under 10.4 in Lion. when i first started up it just gave me the standard iTunes window when you have no music or anything. You know it tells you where you can get it. So then i just told it to search my user folder for stuff to import and it started. but then when it gets done none of my songs had ratings that i had applied and none of my playlists where there. I checked my Music folder for playlists and didnt find any. what can i do?

Your playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you create are stored in the iTunes Library file found in /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.  What are the iTunes library files?, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files.
Look in your  /Users/username/Music/iTunes folder for a folder called previous iTunes Libraries.  These files are dated with the date created.
How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451 explains how to recreate your library and playlists using these previous files.

  • How can one make the drop down list of bookmarks disappear when selecting an item?

I want the list to close automatically when selecting a bookmark to open the page (as it does with favourites in Internet Explorer 8). Is it possible to set this up or does the list always have to be closed manually?

I am closing this prompt as now I am seeing that it is getting refreshed.
