ITunes playlist won't Live Update on iCloud.

I have a smart playlist where my newest songs go.  It's limited to 100 songs, unplayed.  Once a song is played, it is removed from the list.  This works fine on my computer but not on iCloud.  This playlist on my iPhone now contains hundreds of songs.  Songs are added but never removed.  How so I get the iCloud playlist to match my computer and delete played songs automatically?

I found my answer here:

Seems that iTunes Match isn't fully baked yet.

  • My itunes playlist has stopped live updating even though i have set it up to do so... help?

Hi all, I have restarted, synced, done everything I can think of to make my playlist sync to show only certain rated songs as per my selection but it's not live updating like I want it to! What can I do?

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

  • Smart Playlist isn't live updating on Ipod

Now that my itunes and ipod are updated to the latest version, my smart playlists don't live update on my ipod. When I listen to my smart playlists on itunes, it does live update. Can anyone help me?

I found out what was wrong. The podacast true/false option in the smart playlists stopped it from dynamically updating. I found the solution from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1848130&#1848130
Thank you for trying to help me. You guys were very responsive. Later.

  • Smart playlists no longer live update

I wrote in about this once before but got no solution. I use a smart playlist on my ipod touch to give me only podcasts with less than 1 play, so that I only get the new ones. When I got the ipod for Christmas, and until about late January it was working fine. All of the sudden it stopped live updating, and now only does it when I sync. This really ***** because I listen to about 25 podcasts a week, so it can be very confusing as to which I've heard and which I haven't. Is there any solution for this? I've tried using podcast = true and genre = podcast, but neither will smart update. As I said it worked fine previously, so it's not that podcast = true is completely broken, as I've heard it said elsewhere.
    Any help much appreciated.

Sorry about that, I must have misunderstood.
This is the situation in detail.
    When it worked:
A podcast would download. It would instantly appear in my smart playlist labeled "podcasts".
The playlist has the rules "podcast = true" and "playcount = less than 1".
    I would sync my ipod.
    I unplug the ipod.
When I listened to a podcast on my ipod completely (until the very end), the podcast would be removed from the smart playlist immediately, even though my ipod wasn't plugged in.
    Now:
A podcast downloads. It appears instantly in my smart playlist.
I sync my ipod, and it appears in the smart playlist there too.
    I unplug the ipod.
I listen to a podcast (every second of it) through the playlist. When the podcast is over, that podcast remains in my playlist, despite having a playcount greater than 1.
When I listen to podcasts on my computer directly via the smart playlist, it IS live updated. That is to say that when the podcast ends it is immediately removed from the playlist. That's what I want to happen on the ipod when it isn't connected to my computer, just like it used to.

  • My itunes playlists won't let me drop any songs into them.

my itunes 9 playlists won't let me drop any songs into them. If I try to drag a song from my library and drop it, the playlist won't highlight. So strange. This just started happening. Any thoughts?

When I go into Payment Method it says "Paypal is not supported on this device.  To manage or change your payment method, go to the iTune Store on your computer.  Then in "Red" it says "There's a billing problem with a previous purchase.  Please enter another payment method."  I have went into the iTune store and have changed my payment method and also called Paypal and my account has no problem. It still keeps getting this same message when I try to purchase an app.

I'm trying to get playlists from my iPad to my iPhone 5, but without using iTunes since I'm not able to sync my iPhone 5 currently.  I do use iCloud, is there a way to sync playlists from one device to the other that way?  Or any other way without syncing both devices to iTunes?  Thanks

  • ITunes playlists won't show on IPhone4s

I've got a new IPhone 4s.   But now when I sync with I Tunes on my MacPro....the play lists only show a few songs in each playlist.
Example I have 30 songs in one playlist in ITunes....everything is checked and everything plays just fine.
But after syncing via a cable...Only 4 songs show up on my IPhone4s.  I talked with someone at Apple and they said they know there has been an occasional complaint of this happening...  They said that the engineers are working on it..
Does anyone know of a work around to get my music onto my IPhone......maybe importing the ITunes music folder in some other form?
    Thanks
    Rich

What type of iPod do you have? Currently only the iPod classic and the new nanos support the folder structure on the iPod that will allow you to create playlists with a playlist.
Older iPods (and you are posting in the forum for older iPods, hence my question) do not support this and only show playlists as lists of songs even though iTunes allows you to create folders.

  • ITunes Playlist won't sync on iPhone 4S

I recently purchased and upgraded to MAC OS X 10.6.8 and upgraded to iTunes 11. Now, I am not able to sync my music. My playlists do not want to seem to go onto my phone. I have tried manually managing, syncing using WI-FI, powering off and on (both devices), switching USB port to the back of the MAC. When I plug in my my phone and open up iTunes, it shows the playlists, but with circles and some songs are in bold. When I go to my iPhone and choose the Music tab, then More, then Shared, it says my iPhone. I can switch is to entire Library, but when I unplug my phone and walk away from my MAC it reverts back and my songs go away.

option command S to view the left sidebar.
Select your iPhone in the sidebar.
Click on Music tab at top of iTunes.
Click Sync music & Entire library.
Click Apply at bottom right of iTunes window.
    What happens?
When I go to my iPhone and choose the Music tab, then More, then Shared,
That is shared from your iTunes library over wifi using Home Sharing. It simply allows you to play what is in iTunes on yoru phone while you are on the same wifi network.
    Nothng to do with syncing.

  • Smart playlists not live updating on ipod touch (2nd gen)

    Scenario:
I have a smartplaylist with live updating ticked in itunes. this playlists looks for tracks with a star rating between 4 and 5 stars and places them in the playlist. in itunes when i listen to new music with no rating and i give it a rating that meets this rule it works and places that said track in the playlist.
I then sync my ipod and the updated playlist with the new tracks that i have just rated goes on there. all good so far.
But when i rate a track on my ipod when i am away from my computer and i give it 4 or 5 stars it does not "live update" and place it on the said playlist. I have to wait untill i get home and synce with my itunes library for the newly rated tracks to go on my desired playlist.
isnt that the point of "live updating" playlists?
I should be able to rate a track and for it to go onto this playlist whilst i am "on the go"
This way of working always worked on my other ipods. just not with my touch.
any help or advice? is this a known software bug to do with the touch?
Thanks for reading, Comments and suggestions welcome.

Yes, I've had this problem several times. There seem to be certain criteria you can't use in a playlist and expect it to work on you iPod. I don't know if this will solve your problem but here's what I've figured out:
I have a 5G ipod classic. Any playlists that I've created using the criteria 'podcast is true/false' won't live update on the iPod. I've solved this by changing the criteria to 'genre contains podcast' and that works just fine.
The playlists that I've created using the 'playlist is' AND selecting one of (oh how to put this) iTunes library playlists that appear at the top of itunes (in my case "Music" and "TV Shows") (the ones with the icons), also do not live update on the ipod. For whatever reason, these default playlists seem to break live updating on the iPod, but not in iTunes. I got around it by using a whole list of genres to include/exclude to create my music playlist (there's probably a better way to do it). For my playlists that contain TV shows, I set all the TV shows I've ripped from my DVD's to have a genre of 'music and television' and use that to create a playlist. That also works.
You stated that you use the rating criteria to create your playlist, but might you also be using the default lists at the top too? of course, i'm not using an ipod touch so maybe this isn't helpful. I hope it is, because i know how crazy this was making me... good luck...

  • How do you update smart playlists with live update turned off?

If I create a smart playlist in itunes and deselect live updating then how exactly does the smart playlist load up?
The reason I ask is that started setting up Smart Playlists for all of the artists on my computer and they're all set to live update which is consequently slowing down my itunes.  I realize that I may not necessarily need that. My question is though...how exactly would I go about manually updating a smart playlist that has live updating turned off?

Well, the problem is that I have smart playlists for every artist in my library (which is literally hundreds).  With every live update turned on, every time I edit tags for a new single or something it'll scan all the smart playlists for matches.  The reason I'd like to have smart playlists instead of regular playlists is that I tend to add a lot of singles, and, especially in the hip hop genre, they tend to have a lot of guest appearances so I'd like the smart playlists to do tehir job.....I'd just prefer to not have it set to live update so I can avoid delays during tagging.
Apparently this is a known side efffect of having many smart playlists in your itunes.  I realize my way of working with them might be slightly unconventional in comparison to how they are typically used but it's great for me.  If I could leave live update on without any performance degregation then I would but it seems I have to pick.
I read somewhere that if you shut down itunes and restart that it'll refresh all your smart playlists (if live update is turned off).

  • IOS update still did NOT fix the live updating to smart playlist on iPhone

I updated to the brand new iOS 4.1 today, and I am still having an issue that has made me upset for the past few months. For years and years I have been able to use smart playlists that have live updated on my iPods and iPhones without problems. Recently, within the past few months of software updates, my smart playlists have stopped live updating.
Here are two examples I'm talking about:
    1. I have a smart playlist of music that I call Unrated for iPhone. The smart playlists requirements are that it has no star rating and that it is limited to 500 MB. I used to be able to rate songs on my iPhone, and they would get removed from the playlist automatically within my iPhone without having to sync it with my desktop. Now, as I rate those songs on my iPhone, they stay on the unrated list.
    2. I have another playlist called 5*'s least recent. The requirements for this smart playlist are that the songs have 5 stars, and they are limited to the 75 least recently played songs. Songs used to be removed from that list once they were played. Now, they stay on that list until I sync my iPhone to my desktop.
What happened to live updating? Is anybody else experiencing this problem? I have loved this feature for years and now there is a bug! Has anybody brought up this topic before? Because I couldn't find any solutions.

FYI, I've found that Live Updating can SORT OF work. It seems if you only have two rules, live upating works (IE, I have one that is a Rating must be 3-5*'s and last played cannot be within the last 8 weeks). Once the song is played it disapears off the playlist. BUT, as soon as I try to add a third rule, it doesn't work anymore! This is unfortunate because two rules really limits the ability of the playlist...
    Cheers,

  • Playlist will not sync/update correctly

    I have an iPod Touch.
I use playlists very liberally. I have one that I just call "New Music". It's limited to the 25 songs most recently added. When I click on that playlist in iTunes, both under the general library, and under the iPod Touch, it shows the correct songs listed.
But when I sync it up, a completely different group of songs comes up on the iPod itself, even though iTunes has the correct list. In fact, it's giving me the 25 OLDEST songs on the iPod, even though the list on iTunes has the right songs listed.
    Am I missing something obvious?

I am having the same problem in that the content of my Smart Playlist on the computer does not match the content on the iPod Touch. My playlist is Newest 50 4+, or my newest 50 songs which have a 4 or 5 star rating.
I tried each of the suggestions in the referenced bulletin and the only thing that works is to turn off 'Live Updating' in the Smart Playlist. The problem with this is that when I add new music to the iPod, I will listen and rate them as I go, so if one of these new songs is worthy of a 4 or 5 star rating, I should update the 'Newest 50 4+' playlist, but with live updating off, that won't work.
Hoping that a real solution is found soon - this used to work until recently (latest update?).
BTW, Using iTune 9.0.2 and v3.1.2 on the iPod Touch (running on a MacBook Pro)

  • No more live updating?

iTunes 11 is only updating my number of plays and 'last played' on random songs.  Has anyone else had a problem with iTunes not recording and live updating the data from music being played?  I have a smart playlist of songs that I haven't listened to this year, I want to play through them, but it's not longer recording that they have been played.  Can some one help or is this just a flaw in the 'new and improved' iTunes?

After further research - I did find someone else post that if you turn off 'Cross-fade' option it starts to live update again!  Thanks to those other contributers!

  • Live Update no longer working on iPod Classic

I have "Live Update" selected on many smart playlists on my iPod Classic. The playlists no longer Live Update, I need to re-sync in order to update the playlist.
This started happening around iTunes v11.1. My iPod has the most recent firmware, which hasn't been updated in years.

    Dear Chris:
Yes, turning off Protected Mode indeed solves the problem!
Specifically, we today (June 9, 2012) installed the new Adobe Flash v. 11.3.300.257 on several Windows 7 PC's, all running Firefox v. 14 (Beta), and none of the Firefox installations would confirm that the installation was performed successfully.  For example, the Adobe Flast test/about site, https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about, would not work.  And, likewise, YouTube videos and other Flash-encoded videos did not work either.
So, we tried your suggestion to disable the new Protected Mode, and it worked.  That is, every single machine on which Flash did not work in Firefox now functions perfectly.  So this conclusively demonstrates that there indeed is some kind of bug in the implementation of Protected Mode.
Can you please let me and the other Adobe users know when this is fixed.  Thanks.
Also, could you likewise let us know the risks of turning of Protected Mode (although we really don't have any choice, as Flash will not work on Firefox with PM turned on).
    Thank you.  Much appreciated.
    Kind regards,

  • Live Update on Smartlist not updating, not "live"

I tried search and didn't spot what I think I need.
I have several smart playlists on my Ipod Nano. Two have conditoinal "not played in the last x days and 2 weeks added, and live update is checked.
When I play the first song from the ipod it remains in the smart playlist.
Does Live Update only work during or after a PC sync?
It does NOT mean live=on the Ipod ??

You are correct, live update only means that the songs are removed or added when the iPod is synced to the computer.
The iPod does not have the capability to remove songs from the playlists once they have been played.
Live update simple allows iTunes to add or remove songs to/from the smart playlists when they become eligible, eg. if your playlist is "Not played in last 2 days" and song X is added when you first make the playlist. Song X is played, and with Live Updating checked, is then removed from the playlist in iTunes. After 2 days, if the song has not been replayed, it is then eligible again and is added back to the playlist. With Live Updating turned off, song X would stay on the playlist as it was eligible when the pklaylist was made and therefore iTunes assumes it is still so.
Whether all these things happen on the iPod depends on at wich time/s in the process it is synced with iTunes.
A workaround is to sync with the computer each time you play the playlist/s. However, since this isn't always practical, why not send Apple your Feedback, telling them what you think should be considered in future with regard to this topic.
