ITunes & Playlists (unchecked items)

Here is the story.
- I have over 20,000 MP3s in my total library.
- I have many genres
- I rate songs to target portable playlists (rock, Irish, etc)
- I have two iPods (classic 30GB & Nano 4GB)
- I am planning to get the Touch 32GB
- My 30GB I take to work for all day music
- My Nano is in the car for audiobooks
- I have two airport express devices hooked up to speakers
- I have a computer in the family room which accesses the main systems which shares its playlists.
Here is the challenge:
I use checked items to manage what loads down to the iPods. I often get new music and don't want to have to constantly playlist it and try to work it into my main lists. I have been using the sync checked items since the ipods cannot hold the entire library.
I would like to have my itunes system play tunes in a shuffle regardless of their checked status. checked items, as itunes is designed, are to manage what gets synced, not shuffled. It would be great if a preference was set in itunes to toggle checked items in the shuffle - after all, it holds the entirety of the library. This is now coming to a head for me now with christmas. I want my itunes to play christmas shuffles, but do not want them to sync to the ipods.
I have read posts going back years about how to do this and that with checked items, but it really looks to me like a workaround for a simple feature addition to itunes. I don't look forward to creating specific itunes playlists for each ipod, especially with a third one on the way. If Apple wants to also own the playlist at home space, they need to give us a few more options about how to control what plays and what syncs since they are not the same uses.

I have exactly the same request for change. When a playlist is created, be it either static or dynamic, it can contain both selected and unselected items. What iTunes should do is just (have at least an option to) play all of the songs regardless of them being checked or unchecked. This seems quite a simple feature.
I (and so it seems the topic opener) use the checkmark for syncing purpose only.
I think a workaround can be as follows:
- Create a playlist, e.g. 'Do Not Sync', and let it contain all of your unselected songs
* unfortunately there is no way to filter/search for/sort on unselected items as far as I know, so this can be quite a hassle. Instead of making this playlist for all your songs, you may do it gradually for each playlist you create
- Create a normal playlist containing the desired songs
* this playlist can contain both selected and unselected items
- Select all in this playlist and invoke Check Selection
- Whenever you want to sync, first remember to open the playlist 'Do Not Sync'
- Select all and invoke Uncheck Selection
- Start the sync
All this hassle can quite easily be solved when iTunes would have an option to play songs regardless of them being selected or unselected.
Cheers,
Stoic

Correction on the statement "unfortunately there is no way to filter/search for/sort on unselected items". By using creative smart playlist it seems you actually can filter all your unselected items as mentioned @ http://www.macworld.com/article/134675/2008/07/checkuncheckitunes.html :
If you’d like to create a playlist that contains only unchecked songs in your iTunes library, do this.
Create a smart playlist that reads:
Playlist is Music
Make sure that Match Only Checked Items is enabled and close it. Give it the name All Checked.
Create a second smart playlist that reads:
Playlist is not All Checked
Genre is not Podcast
Playlist is not Movies
Playlist is not TV Shows
Playlist is not Audiobooks
Do not enable the Match Only Checked Items option and save this smart playlist as Unchecked. Now when you want to easily see what is and isn’t checked, visit these two playlists.

  • Itunes sync: 44 items could not be synced see itunes for more information

    I have an Iphone 4s, itunes lates version 10.5.1.42 running on 32 bit widows 7 pro.
    I was having problems with my music playing on my phone after upgrading from the 4 to the 4s.
    My music would just refuse to play at times. One solution I tried was to go into the music tab of my iphone in itunes and uncheck "sync music" in order to remove musice completely; then to recheck it and resync music......my resynced music plays fine, the PROBLEM is itunes refused to sync any of purchased music that i purchased on my prior device!!  My phone displays this error: "itunes sync 44 items could not be synced see itunes for more information" yet itunes displays no messages -
    I've tried to individually select these songs, albums - make additional playlists...nothing works.
    Please help asap.

    Were they purchased with the SAME Apple ID you have registered the phone with?

  • ATV Not Syncing or Streaming Unchecked Items.....

    I'm guessing that this just started since the latest software update, but maybe I'm just noticing it now.
    I have tried the automatic sync and custom sync settings, but cannot get my unchecked items to appear on my ATV any more. They will not even stream when iTunes is open.
    I am having NO other issues. I have an excellent connection. It syncs new content (checked of course). YouTube works great. No problems downloading HD rentals. Etc.
    Any ideas? And yes, I have rebooted both my computer and ATV.

    "Everything else that is checked will automatically be streamed to the AppleTV unless that is checked."
    Huh? One of us is confused.
    Think about it....if unchecked items will never show up on an Apple TV anyway, why do we need an option telling it not to show unchecked items?
    And managing playlists over 30GB is far too difficult of a task. That's why iPods, in addition to playlists, give you the option to sync only checked items or all items checked or unchecked. Why shouldn't an ATV give us the same option?

  • Sync problem: Unchecked items stay on Touch!

    When I sync, only checked items do sync, but unckecked items that were previously checked or items removed from checked playlist aren't deleted from the iPod Touch!
    It's like it only goes one way! Checked items go in the iPod Touch, but changes that should remove items FROM the Touch stay there!
    I use AutoSync because it's much easier than manual (for me, at least), and it used to work perfectly.
    I can't pinpoint exactly when it started to go wrong on my iPod Touch, maybe it NEVER worked... How can I not be sure? Because I don't sync it often, I use my iPod classic a whole lot more for music, and only started recently putting more music & video on the Touch.
    Now it really bothers me to have Christmas music on it that I can't seem to remove (soon it will be OK though...) ;o)
    So, I use Auto-Sync, and checked "only sync checked items"... but it doesn't work!
    I now upgraded to iTunes 9 and iPod Touch OS 3.1.1 and it's the same...
    The weird thing is, under iPod Touch in the left pane, the changes I made in the playlist/videos and such are all reflected! I thought it had worked until I looked on the Touch...
    iTunes left pane under "iPod Touch": No more Christmas music (but new music from the MBP), no more podcasts, different videos.
    I turn on the Touch... No changes! :
    The music that shouldn't be there IS, the podcasts are still there...
    But it added the new content.
    So why does the left pane reflect the changes and not the reality?
    Why does the Touch not sync right?
    I always thought the iPod (whatever it's type) while in auto-sync, would just take in what's on iTunes and copy it (or update it), and if one track wasn't on the iTunes playlist, you'd lose it (which, before, was scaring me)...
    And it's not doing that properly?!
    *This also happens in the pictures & app departments:
    I removed some pics (unchecked some lists/events in iPhoto tab) but they ALL are on the Touch.
    And when I unchecked an app in the apps tab, I got a popup window reminding me the app would be removed from the Touch if I synced, but it is still on the Touch.
    Could someone please help me?
    ...P.S. I also notice syncing is taking forever... Which isn't new either.
    Syncing takes about 2hrs for just 8G of content! (with very few changes in that content)

    OK, this is WEIRD.
    Before I posted the topic, I did a test : reset the iPod Touch, do another sync, check again...
    It did NOT solve the problem, and the sync took just as long as the first one.
    Well whaddayaknow?
    Later in the evening, the unchecked items had disappeared from the Touch!!! (except the pictures... all iPhoto content is on the Touch... lucky I don't have a lot in there!).
    Trying to remember what the heck I could've done in the meantime, the only thing I can remember is opening "music" and seeing the library being updated (or actualized?)... And going in the app store where a couple apps had to be updated.
    ...Could one of those things had done it?
    The Touch went to sleep between a)11am when the problem was still there, after the sync and b) the evening when it was all good.
    But I didn't do a reset or put it on "off".
    So it's a mystery.
    I know I'm not crazy, and I always am very careful to check everything before posting.
    Now, if anyone has any idea about crazy syncing time... I'll post another thread for that. (8G of content on the Touch takes 2hrs to sync, while 60G of content on the Classic takes only 10 min!)
    Thanks all anyways!

  • Help with iTunes playlist sync

    Hi,
    It seems that newer versions of iTunes (9) do not sync my playlist in the right order. My playlist is a 'smart' playlist and has a ruleset designed to filter for additions to my library that have been recently added within the last couple of months. The problem is that the library order (sorted by 'Date Added' in iTunes) does not sync in said order on my iPod touch 1st or 3rd generation. I am not sure how it is syncing but it's not alphabetical either, it appears to be random as I have looked at all the metadata fields and none sort the playlist how it is showing up on the iPod. If I remember correctly, I had no issues with this with earlier versions of iTunes before 9. So far i've tried, re-installing iTunes and wiping my iPod and resyncing everything which hasn't worked. Just want my playlist to sort the same way on the iPod as it is in iTunes.
    Details of the smart playlist i'm working with:
    Match All = checked
    Date Added - is after - ##/##/####
    Genre - does not contain - Podcast
    Genre - does not contain - Audiobook
    Genre - does not contain - TV Shows
    Kind - does not contain - Movie
    Grouping - does not contain - book
    Kind - does not contain - video
    Time - is less than - 30:00
    Limit to = unchecked
    Match only unchecked items = unchecked
    Live updating = checked

    Smart playlists are not working correctly in iTunes 9.
    Also, your playlist is kinda messed up.
    Try this...
    Match all;
    Playlist is Music
    Date added is after ##/##/####
    Time - is less than - 30:00 (do you have any songs longer than 30 minutes? If not, delete this)
    Live updating enabled
    ++++
    I would not use these...
    Genre - does not contain - Podcast
    Genre - does not contain - Audiobook
    Genre - does not contain - TV Shows
    Use *Kind does not contain* instead of *Genre does not contain* because the Genre may not be a podcast or TV Show or Audiobook.

  • Syncing unchecked items

    I have noticed that unchecked items are not synced from itunes to apple tv no matter what you have asked itunes to sync in the way of playlists etc. This is different to the behaviour with ipod syncing where there is an option on the summary page to "only sync unchecked items".
    I'm not sure if this is an oversight, but surely ipod syncing and atv syncing should work in the same way?

    Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
    In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:

  • ITunes Playlist and Time Machine

    I just spent a couple of hours making a playlist for an event. Then I made a couple more playlists for different parts of the event. All the while, Time Machine was dutifully making its backups. I was listening to some songs in the playlist and deleting ones that might not fit after all, when I accidentally deleted the entire playlist. No confirmation dialog from iTunes; it was just gone.
    I hadn't lost hope yet, as I was certain that I could just use Time Machine to scroll back in time and retrieve the lost list. But that wasn't the case. The only version of "iTunes Music Library.xml" was the most recent version. For some reason, Time Machine doesn't keep an incremental backup of it.Most likely it's because it has to be kept exactly up-to-date or there would be orphaned/missing songs.
    It figures. The one time I actually NEED time machine, it didn't seem to work. Unless I'm missing something.
    Any ideas? At the very least, how does one re-enable the prompt on deleting playlists?

    Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl  contains the playlists but it also contains all the other information about what you see in iTunes such as items added, ratings, etc.  If you last backup was not long ago and you have made almost no changes to your library since then, you could just replace that one file an more or less revert to what it was when the library file was last saved.  If you have added a few songs you could just find them in your media folders and drag them to iTunes again to bring things up to date.
    If the above is not acceptable then there may be other ways to do it such as saving the old library file in another location on your computer, opening it in iTunes and exporting the playlists, then re-importing them in the current library.  This may also require some file editing and I haven't tried any of this to be able to advise you specifically at this point.

  • Script to play itunes playlist on start?

    I have just done the software upgrade to SL and now my old script doesnt work to auto play an itunes playlist on startup.
    I found the following script as a replacement but it doesnt seem to run automatically on start up.
    tell application "iTunes"
      activate
      play playlist "1jwmix"
    end tell
    I placed this script into Apple Script Editor and saved it in my MUSIC folder. And Yes I added the script to the log in items... so it does currently open on start up. Just doesnt seem to auto run the script.
    Sorry script writing isnt something I understand much about.
    Help please!

    Presuming you've confirmed that the script works correctly when run in AppleScript Editior, make sure you're saving the script as an application, not a script. Then put that application in your startup items.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1766 An Apple consultant said I could get rid of itune playlist from my ipad by connecting the cable from my ipad to a computer that does not have songs from itunes in its computer. I was not able to do it. Any suggestions?

    How do you get rid of itunes playlist from my ipad? I was told you can sync it back to a computer that does not have any itunes songs. It did not work.

    I'm sure I don't completely understand the question.
    How to get rid of an iTunes playlist from your iPad? Just delete the items while using iTunes. The next time you sync, they'll be gone from your playlist.

  • Help! Export iTunes Playlist to Folder with Play Order

    Hello all,
    I run a community internet radio station, and to upload songs to the server, a .zip file has to be uploaded. However, when a playlist, or a bunch of songs in a set is carried over, Finder reorganizes the files alphabetically, and it doesn't preserve song and play order which is essential. So, I did a few searches and there seemed to be a solution at macosxtips.com, this is the link: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080424194133862.
    Basically, what it said was: start an automator workflow, and get selected itunes items, then copy finder items, and finally, rename files (sequentially). However, when I do this, the workflow seems to process endlessly without any results. It doesn't prompt me to add the files to a folder, and seems to get stuck at step one.
    When I checked the log in Automator, it said, in regards to Get Selected iTunes Items, "The action 'Get Selected iTunes Items' was not supplied with the required data."
    I've tried this both on my 24" aluminum iMac and my 15" new aluminum Macbook Pro with the same results.
    I'm stuck, and I need to provide my team with a solution to upload their playlists. Any suggestoins? Thanks in advance, all of us here at www.itntradio.com appreciate your help.
    See screenshot below -

    OK, since you are desperate and all...
    An AppleScript can easily do the same thing, so give this one a try. The following script works the same as your example workflow - it copies the selected iTunes items into the specified folder, renaming them by adding a prefix (I used your workflow example for the details):
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px; height: 340px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    (* copy and rename iTunes items *)
    if application "iTunes" is not running then
    display alert "iTunes is not running" message "Please activate iTunes and select items."
    return
    end if
    -- set up a few things
    choose folder with prompt "Choose a folder to copy the selected iTunes items into:" default location (path to desktop)
    set DestinationFolder to the result
    set {PrefixNumber, TrackLocations} to {0, {}}
    -- get filepaths of the selected iTunes items
    tell application "iTunes" to repeat with SomeTrack in (get the selection)
    try -- skip items that are not file tracks (no location)
    set the end of TrackLocations to location of SomeTrack
    end try
    end repeat
    -- copy and rename
    repeat with SomeFile in TrackLocations
    set PrefixNumber to text 2 thru -1 of ((1000 + PrefixNumber + 1) as text) -- prefix with leading zeros
    tell application "Finder"
    set NewName to PrefixNumber & "-" & (get name of SomeFile)
    set the name of (duplicate SomeFile to DestinationFolder) to NewName
    end tell
    end repeat
    tell application "Finder" to reveal DestinationFolder
    </pre>

  • Can I share itunes playlists from one computer to another?

    Can I share itunes playlists from one computer to another?

    My computer cannot run  Sharing so I don't have firsthand experience.  My reading of it is:
    1) Music sharing lets you stream (not transfer) select items, including specific playlists, between local computers on the same network.
    2) Home Sharing lets you stream or transfer media files between computers on the same network.  I don't know if this is as spacific as particular playlists, or you you have to make the playlist once the desired content is transferred.  It says media so doesn't look like it restricts transfer to specific playlists, it just makes your whole media collection accessible on another authorized computer.
    You can export a playlist file from iTunes, but this is a text file listing of content, not a complete playable package.

  • Itunes playlist question

    hello all,
    i've been having trouble syncing my playlists on my ipod with those within my itunes. My preference is set to "manually manage music and videos," because my ipod is too small to sync with my itunes music library.
    I have a bunch of playlists on my itunes that I would like to sync with my ipod. It seems that any time I try to drag a playlist from my itunes to my ipod, it re-copies the songs on to the ipod, even though I already have the song on there.
    for some reason, when i drag the playlist from itunes to ipod, it is not copying the directory, but rather, the whole mp3 files.
    my only solution is to re-create the playlists on the ipod when it's plugged into itunes, which is a real drag
    why is this happening and how can I change it?

    My preference is set to "manually manage music and videos," because my ipod is too small to sync with my itunes music library.
    I have a bunch of playlists on my itunes that I would like to sync with my ipod.
    Select theiPod in iTUnes.
    Uncheck Manually manage music.
    Click the music tab.
    Select *Sync music* and Selected playlists.
    Tick the playlists you want on the iPod.
    Add/remove from these playlist to change what's on the iPod.
