Itunes plist - multiple files in library preferences folder

there are about 100 files in the preferences folder all with a different file name - e.g.: com.apple.iTunes.plist.0sxSNjJ
I can also see file name: com.apple.iTunes.plist
According to the dates - these started appearing in January 2011. I upgraded from 10/5.8 to 10.6 in December, but there aren't any dated as December so I'm not sure that's related.
ITunes is constantly asking for my password and I was going to trash the plist file to see if that helped.
What's with the multiple entrees?

just found another post on same topic - search: multiple itunes plist files
guess I have to wait for next version and fix.

    Hello there, gleab.
The following Knowledge Base article reviews the ways to import content into iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
Also keep in mind which formats can be added:
You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats.

  • What are the .plist.lockfile files in the preference folders?

I've just recently noticed in the Library/Preferences folder, and the Users/Library/Preferences folder, files appearing with ".plist.lockfile" at the end of the file names, and they are zero bytes. I don't recall seeing those files in there before. Just wondering what these are and why they would have zero bytes to them.

I googled it and found this article.
Long but very informative. It takes a while to read through it.

  • After Effects warning: Could not create the file '/Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/13.0/dummy

I have just downloaded the trial After Effects CC. I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on my Macbook Pro.
When I try to launch After Effects, this message appears:
"After Effects warning: Could not create the file '/Users/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/13.0/dummy'"
I have followed the advice from other posts on this issue regarding resetting all of the permissions in the Adobe folder in my library to read and write , but it doesn't change anything. I still get the same message when I try to launch the program. Moreover, there is no After Effects folder in my Adobe folder, even though it's clearly in my Applications folder.
I also uninstalled After Effects and tried to reinstall it, but to no avail.
I sure would like to give it a try, as I was planning on purchasing it, but this is just one more issue in a long irritating line of issues that have arisen since trying to download it from CC.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am having this problem and this response does not make sense. I made the "Preferences" ,"Adobe" & "After Effects" folder along with the 10.0,11.0,13.0,13.2 folders all read/write. Can't seem to find an answer.

  • Fresh Install 10.4.11 -Library 'Preferences' Folder

    Hi Gang
I'm no novice to reformatting/installing new system drives
Just wanna make sure I have this straight; The Library 'Preferences' Folder, obviously contains data relevant to each application that was installed. It was recommended I copy this ENTIRE folder, and BEFORE pasting this folder, delete the new 'Preferences' folder which will appear in any fresh install, then paste the copied 'Preferences' folder.
But what about the data in this folder that contains vital statistics on the applications previously installed?
Should I re-install all those programs/applications first? Then replace the ENTIRE Library 'Preferences' Folder?
    Thanx
    Mike

    Hi again BD
Let me understand this; rather than cloning, I'd do better with a fresh install. For several reasons; mainly because I plan to continue using Final Cut. But with a newer upgrade. It's been recommended that I start off FRESH, then when prompted just enter the serial number of FC5 so FC6 will become a stand alone program, free of any migration problems from the older program.
Besides (except for convenience), cloning wouldn't allow you to give your system a laxative, (sort of speaking)
I realize re-installation of everything requires a lot of time, but I don't mind.
Again, what matters more to me is entire 'Mail' folder, and a few selected .plists (know what I mean?)
So then maybe I'll leave the Preferences Folder alone ....
I have all the other IDE Drive bays occupied ...

  • Can I delete the files in ~/Library/Preferences and have all preferences reset to factory default?

I have this folder inside my /Library folder called Preferences. I was wondering if I could delete all of the files inside this folder and have all of my preferences reset to the factory default?

First, why would you want to do this? I ask because all of the applications installed also have preference files. Some of the preference files store things like serial numbers. Some programs that use plugins that use serial numbers also store the serial numbers in the host program's preference file. RapidWeaver is an example of this.
So, If you deleted all of the files in your preference folder, you could have some major headaches for a while afterward.
If you are curious, there is a program called AppleJack that only runs in Single User mode. It can check preference files for you. There are several others available that cost money. AppleJack is a free open source application.
    Hope this helps,
    Craig

  • Is there a way I can set iTunes to add files automatically from a folder in my Windows PC?

Is there a way I can set iTunes to add files automatically from a folder in my Windows PC and ensure that it is synced automatically? For example, if I add or modify a file in that folder it should be added to iTunes automatically. At the same time the original files in the folder should not be re-organized. That is can I just point to a music folder in my hard drive and sit back for iTunes to do the rest?

  • How do you find out what application is generating a plist file in your preference folder?

I have had two similar warnings come up in Drive Genius 3, a program that I use to manage my drives.  The warnings occur during a daily verification of preferences on my main drive, a 256GB SSD.
    They state:
"The preference file at '/Users/me/Library/Preferences/com.analogsolutions.Football.plist' may be corrupted."
"The preference file at '/Users/me/Library/Preferences/org.machinedevelop.National.plist' may be corrupted."
Per Drive Genius' advisement, "Corrupted files can cause appplication crashes and should be moved to the Trash." I delete the files, however they are regenerated each day.
Q: How do you figure out what application is generating a preference file?  And is there a way to tell if this is a OS generated preference file?
I have searched online and cannot find any information about either Analog Solutions or Machine Develop nor am I able to discern what these particular .plist files are for...
Q: Are these two .plist files truly potentially harmful?

Hi Everyone, sorry for the late response.  I have been monitoring my Preferences Folder; every moment I am on my computer trying to catch what application/process generates these files.  I was hoping to try your suggestions, but oddly enough the offensive .plist files have not returned since the last time I deleted them about a week ago.... strange...
In any case, I have responded to some of your suggestions and questions that I have information on:
X423424X wrote: Ok, can you double click the .plist file?  If so it should attempt to launch the Property List Editor (in your Utilities folder).  That way you can look at stuff in the plist.  Maybe (hopefully) there's something in there that can shed some light on who is creating it.   If Property List Editor cannot open the file (some apps create files that have the .plist extension but don't actually create the proper XML format -- probably what ProSoft was alluding to) then try opening it with a text editor.
The .plist file when opened in text editor contains a string of (what to me seems to be) an arbitrary list of numbers.
Linc Davis wrote: Those files have been given obfuscated names so you won't know what created them. They must contain encrypted registration data for some third-party commercial software that you use.
    Yes, seems likely...
Linc Davis wrote: It should be fairly easy to find out what application is creating them, if you really care. Move the files to the Desktop, then log out. Log back in while holding the shift key as you click the "Log In" button. That will prevent your login items from loading, among other things. Open your account preferences and launch the login items one at a time by double-clicking them in the list. After each one, check to see whether the files have been recreated.
Ran through login, one by one, no luck in identifying the application(s).
X423424X wrote: Another thought, lock the plists on the hope that whatever is using them will "choke" and complain about it (no guarantee that will work but worth a try).
Thanks, the lock idea is the one I will try next if they ever reappear...
X423424X wrote: Also, I don't recall if I asked this but if those plists are deleted while logged in will they be recreated during that same login session.  Or do they only appear after you deleted them and then and then logged out and back in?  Or do you have to reboot to recreate them?
Unfortunately I do not know for certain.  Though from all my login/startup/reboot tests I believe that they are not directly linked to starting up the machine or loging in either.
I'm not really certain why the .plist have not returned.  I haven't uninstalled any programs, though I did run a couple updates for some widgets within the last week; however that was about 3 days after I deleted the last set of .plist files and usually they reappered everyday.  In any case, given that they have not been regenerated I guess my problem is solved per se, at least I am no longer getting that annoying warning everyday.   Still, it's a bit of a mystery
Thanks again for all the help!

  • How to move .plist files from /Library/Preferences

    Hi,
We are trialing using software called Deep Freeze to take a snap shot of the OS that is restored upon reboot thus removing the majority of configuration changes and thus reducing the amount of support calls.
When setting up the software you have the option to create a "Thaw Space" that users can modify at will and the changes will persist over the reboot. Upon creating this space you are able to "map" certain directories such as Documents, Desktop and Library to the Thaw Space.
Initially we did not move the Library folder over so that all changes to wallpapers/screensaves/dock/finder toolbar etc. were restored upon reboot, which ultimately is what we wanted to do from the beginning. This however produced a number of problems of data not being retained over the reboot when we needed it to:
    - iCal data
    - application specific settings (eg. toolbar settings in neooffice)
    - sorting email in apple mail by a field (eg. receive date)
etc. And are continually finding new problems.
So in the end we simply set the entire Library to be mapped to the Thaw Space, however this sets us back to square one in that the users can still change the dock, screensaver, wallpaper etc.
It is my understanding that the files are stored in .plist files in <user>/Library/Preferences. I tried moving individual .plist files out of the Thaw Space and then creating alias files pointing to them, however these were simply deleted and replaced on reboot.
So my question is how would I go about moving a .plist file out of /Library/Preferences
    Cheers

It would seem to me that the problem lies with the Deep Freeze software. Changing system files in system directories is not a good idea. Why not contact Deep Freeze and have them fix their software rather than possibly mucking up your own OS.
I would also recommend that you either update your profile or your OS. 10.5.1 had some bugs that were fixed over the years. It's always good to have the latest OS installed.

  • No spotlight pref file in any library/preferences folder

I have been following these threads on and off for many weeks... trying t0 avoid a complete OS install. There is no "com.apple.spotlight.plist" file in either the root library/preferences or the user/library/preferences directory... I have trashed (and emptied) the com.apple.finder.plist files and restarted but there are no spotlight prefs being created.
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

Move the file to the desktop first. While these files will be recreated as needed, they may contain important information for some programs.

  • Weird files in the User/Library/Preferences folder

Yesterday I noticed that my Preferences folder contains some very weird files. Actually, they're empty folders. I'd like to know if they are supposed to be there. If not, how did they get there and what should I do with them?

Some versions of Photoshop have been known to create such things. Don't remember under what conditions, I think I saw someone say their strange folders appeared when using Photoshop with a either an Epson scanner or printer. At any rate you can toss them without doing any harm.
