ITunes Plus video bitrates

Hi - Most of the videos I have downloaded or upgraded using iTunes Plus have not been downloaded at 256kbps.
I'm assuming they should all be at 256kbps like all of the songs but am not 100% sure as videos could be different. I have contacted support and they misread my email and sent me instructions on how to upgrade DRM-protected videos! Not helpful especially after waiting 36 hours for the reply (they are normally very helpful!)
I'm wondering if I am the only one affected by this or whether any of you have videos at bitrates such as 234kbps or 251kbps as well? It may not seem such a big deal but I feel if I paid the 40p for better quality - the bitrate should have doubled just like the songs do when you upgrade.

The couple of videos I have report an audio bit rate of 250 kbps. So this sort of variation in the bit rate in videos is normal and is probably an artifact of the encoder used. Trust me, unless you're using studio reference quality monitors and have very good ears, you're not going to hear the difference between 234 kbps and 256 kbps, much less between 251 kbps and 256 kbps. So not to worry.

  • ITunes Plus videos "merged" in cover flow?

I recently upgraded 3 videos from the same band, and now in cover flow there's just one thumbnail for all three, and instead of any of the song titles it says "Unknown Album".
This seems to just be a problem here - other bands I've got multiple videos for don't have this problem. And I have checked for the typical settings that cause sorting errors and whatnot (like album artist) and couldn't see anything wrong. Has anyone else seen anything like this?
Oh, also, a fourth upgraded video from a different band shows up correctly with the song name, though since that's the only one I have, I couldn't say whether it would screw up if another one was there.

Did you have iTunes automatically download the artwork for you?
Have you tried selecting the entire album, right click, then picking the "Clear Downloaded Artwork"? Do that, then pick the whole album and do a Get Info on the whole thing. Now click the Check box next to the empty artwork drop zone. OK out of the Get Info box.
Does the album now have NO artwork at all? If so, you are back to a clear slate. If you previously downloaded it from iTunes, select the entire album, right click and pick the option to Download the artwork. Or if you manually added it before, you can now go ahead and re-add the single correct artwork you want.

  • ITunes Plus/Upgrade My Library Won't Detect Some Eligible Items

I've seen a couple of threads on this topic, and I'd like to submit my own.
This thread will serve the dual purpose of providing a possible answer to the problem and bringing to attention iTunes Store customer support's poor response thus far.
Here's the problem in a nutshell: When iTunes Plus was made available, I upgraded my Library because I have quite a few EMI records (all bought through the iTunes Store within the last few months), including Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon', 'The Wall', 'Animals', and 'Wish You Were Here', among others.
The Upgrade successfully purchased and downloaded iTunes Plus albums for my entire EMI collection except for 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Animals'. When I return to Upgrade My Library in the iTunes Store, it claims my Library is completely up-to-date, when in fact it certainly isn't because two of my EMI albums are still 128 kbps DRM protected, despite the fact that the iTunes Plus album is available in the iTunes Store at full price.
Several other people are experiencing the same problem with Pink Floyd and Norah Jones. Strangely, some cannot Upgrade 'The Wall', while mine Upgraded with no problem whatsoever.
What's so buggy about Upgrade My Library, Apple? How can we manually rescan the Library so that these lingering eligible albums can be Upgraded?
I have gone back and forth with iTunes Customer Service about this issue. My first reply I received a day after filling out an error report at the Support Page.
    Dear Travis,
I understand that you are unable to upgrade two of your Pink Floyd albums that are available for purchase as iTunes Plus music. I'm sorry for this trouble.
Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.
Thank you for your patience. Apple wants your iTunes experience to be as enjoyable as possible.
    Sincerely,
    Cordon
    iTunes Store Customer Support
    I received a follow-up four days later:
    Dear Travis,
I'm sorry you ran into an error when you tried to upgrade your iTunes library. This error was caused by a temporary issue with the iTunes Store that should be resolved now. Please check the iTunes Store again. All features should be working well.
If you received this error while downloading a large purchase order, please understand that the cause of the error may be a combination of the size of the order you are downloading and the speed of your connection. Please try another connection that is faster than your current connection. If this is not possible, please continue to attempt to download your purchase. This may take several attempts.
    Sincerely,
    Cordon
    iTunes Store Customer Support
And of course, the problem hadn't been resolved as stated. So I sent a reply:
No, I'm afraid you don't understand.. I can't try to download the iTunes Plus versions of my Pink Floyd albums Dark Side of the Moon and Animals because the iTunes Plus Library Upgrade says I have nothing to upgrade.
Why is it telling me this when I have the two albums in the protected 128 kbps format, which I bought from the iTunes store only months ago? Is there a cookie I need to reset somewhere, or is this an iTunes Server issue? Why isn't 'Upgrade My Library' recognizing these two albums?
If you can't solve the issue and allow me to upgrade, would you instead credit my account for the full price of both iTunes Plus albums I'm having trouble with?
To which Apple disappointingly replied today:
    Dear Travis,
I understand you tried to upgrade your iTunes Library and all but "Pink Floyd albums Dark Side of the Moon and Animals," were upgraded. I know how frustrating this can be and I would be happy to assist you.
You can upgrade eligible previously purchased music to iTunes Plus. You will see any available upgrades on the new Upgrade My Library page. When you click the Upgrade button, you will replace all the eligible music and music videos you've bought previously on iTunes with available iTunes Plus versions of the same content (you cannot choose to upgrade only some of the items). The upgrade price is calculated based on all of your eligible content at 30¢ per song, 60¢ per video, and 30 percent of each album's purchase price. iTunes Plus music will continually be added to the iTunes Store, so your upgrade offer may change at any time. Please check back often to find new music available for upgrading.
For more information, please visit the iTunes Plus FAQ:

I hope this answers your question.
Thank you for choosing the iTunes Store and have a great day!

This email is the specific reason I'm posting this issue. I am curious why I would be sent a blatantly common FAQ response instead of the accurate and personal response I'm used to getting from Apple.
If they cannot figure the problem out, why don't they come out and say it, then give me a credit to my account so that I may purchase the iTunes Plus albums rather than troublesomely try and Upgrade them?
Any workaround or comments are welcome, both from Apple consumers and employees.
My apologies in advance to the outstanding Apple team that makes up 99% of the company. I don't intend to let one bad apple (no pun intended, honestly) sour the reputation of the lot of you.

I've done some comparisons of the File Info between my DRM-Protected 'Dark Side' and 'Animals' songs and the DRM-Free versions. It turns out there are differences which might explain the trouble Upgrade My Library has in recognizing eligible albums.
    On 'Animals':
    Standard http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/travisschiller/Picture2.png
    Plus http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/travisschiller/Picture1.png
Notice the difference in the album art and, notably, the Copyright information. This is not the same song with only quality affected. Apparently, there was some copyright changes that took place, which might critically affect the eligibility of an album or songs.
The same with 'Dark Side of the Moon':
    Standard http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/travisschiller/Picture4.png
    Plus http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a249/travisschiller/Picture3.png
Notice here, too, the running time of the song is different.
All that needs to be done by Apple is a configuration of Upgrade My Library so that it will recognize these previous versions of these albums for those of us who bought it before the revision took place.

  • How Can I Unsubscribe from Itunes Plus?

I purchased on song under the new Itunes Plus category. It has now turned the whole store over to this option only. I don't want to spend $1.29 for each song. How can I undo this choice and go back to my $.99 songs?

    1) Open iTunes and sign in to the iTunes Store, if necessary.
    2) From the Store menu at the top, choose View My Account, enter your password, and click View Account.
    3) On the Apple Account Information page, click the Manage iTunes Plus button. To disable iTunes Plus, deselect "Always show me iTunes Plus music and music videos when available."
    4) Save your changes.

  • Itunes plus adds a tv episode to purchase

I ordered an album in itunes plus - I am having the same problem as many others - 12 of the songs go into waiting or partial download and just sit til i get an error saying "download interrupted - check purchases in view menu". I do and the downloads start again but nothing happens.
Additionally when i purchased the album a tv episode for conviction showed up on the download list. I deleted it but it keeps showing up everytime I do a check purchases. Anyone else having this problem?

This was my error. I had started a free video earlier but never completed it.

  • What Songs are iTunes Plus in iTunes 9 Store?

I just upgraded to iTunes 9. In the iTunes Store, you used to be able to tell which tracks were iTunes PLUS because they had a little "+" sign next to them. Now, none do? What does this mean? Is this a bug? Are ALL iTunes audio files now iTunes PLUS? Are none of them?
Unless something is ONLY available as the old 128kbps low-bit rate, DMR'ed file format, I will NEVER, EVER buy anything in that format. Period. I am only interested in the 256kbps, DRM-free iTunes PLUS files that are twice the bitrate and that I can play at work via VLC Portable since I can't install iTunes at work.
Can someone help me out? You can't even do a "GET INFO" on items in the store any more...
    I'd greatly appreciate any assistance/insight.
    Best Regards,
    Zack

All songs in the store are plus now...a while back they made the switch; that's when they started charging .69/.99/1.29 for tunes....that was the compromise for DRM free tunes was variable pricing for the record companies.
Most DRM tracks in your library can be converted over to plus, the exceptions are anything you have gotten as a "free" download. Pretty much everything that downloads as a free song of the week (before the change) or via a redeemable code (I picked up a free itunes sampler a couple of years back) didn't get ther DRM removed and cannot be converted to plus.
    Hope that helps.

  • Grace period for iTunes Plus?

In the past couple of months (as recently as five days ago), I've purchased some non-Plus iTunes albums. Now, several of them are being offered as Plus upgrades to me.
Is there any grace period for newly purchased items, or do I just need to swallow a $3-or DRM penalty for buying something on its release date?

at least be pointed to some documentation about this
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1711
"Can I upgrade previously purchased music to iTunes Plus?
Yes. Any available upgrades will be shown on the Upgrade to iTunes Plus page. You can upgrade all of your items at once by using the Buy All button. This replaces all eligible previous purchases with iTunes Plus versions of the same items. You can also choose to make individual upgrades by clicking the Buy button to the right of each item. Song upgrades are available for 0.30 USD, video upgrades for 0.60 USD, and albums for 30 percent of the album price. The counter to the right of the "Upgrade to iTunes Plus" link in the Quick Links box will indicate when additional eligible content become available."

  • Why is everyone so hyped about iTunes plus?

I was wondering why you guy's are so eager to convert your entire library to iTunes plus. Because all it does to your songs is take away the limit on how many times you can burn a certain song on to a cd. When you can just take one of those cd's you've burnt that song to and reimport it to window's media player and then you can have an unlimited about of burns to a cd. This guy I know is a DJ and he buy's his songs off of walmart.com and they have one of those limit things as well to where when you exceed 5 burns of that song after that 5th burn the song will sound bad and static like. So all I did was take one of the cd's he already had it on before he exceeded the 5th burn and imported to my computer using WMP and when I burned the song onto a cd it worked just fine.

"Now you can download music and videos from EMI that are free of DRM rules and restrictions. With iTunes Plus, you can burn the music you download from iTunes to as many CDs as you need, transfer it to as many computers (Mac or PC) as you want, or sync it to as many devices as you like. And because it's encoded in 256 kbps AAC, your iTunes Plus music is virtually indistinguishable from the original recording. Hear it for yourself — you can preview all iTunes Plus songs before purchasing.
iTunes Plus music is available now for many EMI artists, such as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Norah Jones, Coldplay, and many more. DRM-free EMI music videos are still $1.99 and music tracks are $1.29.
Even better yet, you can also upgrade existing EMI songs in your iTunes collection for just $.30 per song.
    Check It Out"

  • Why can't I upgrade all music to iTunes Plus?

    Hello world,
So I was wondering why, when looking at the page in the iTunes store which lets you convert all previously purchased DRM music to iTunes Plus, it shows less total songs than I currently have?
To be specific, I created a smart playlist which shows all my protected (DRM) music. I did this by telling the playlist to display: 'Kind - Contains - "Protected"' & 'Kind - Does not contain - "Video"'. The result is that I can see that I have 324 DRM protected songs, all purchased from the iTunes store.
However, when viewing the upgrade page in iTunes it shows that there are a total of 279 songs available for upgrade.
I am of the understanding that right now, all music on the iTunes store is DRM free or iTunes Plus format. I can't believe that they've taken some music down because they couldn't make it available in iTunes Plus, but of course maybe that's exactly what they've done.
Anyway if anyone can explain to me the difference in the total number of songs available for upgrade that would be sweet. As if I am going to pay approx. AU$100 to upgrade, I don't really want 45 songs left over which are still protected as it defeats the purpose a little.
    Cheers.

So what do I do when...
I have two albums by Way Out West. Today I found where 'Don't Look Now' was able to be upgraded to iTunes Plus. Okay, cool enough. (Yes, I'm just now getting around to checking this stuff out). Their other album that I purchased ages ago at the same time as 'DLN' is 'Intensify'. It too is offered today in iTunes.
'Intensify' is not listed in my items that I can upgrade to iTunes Plus.
So, given that this album is available today in iTunes, and it is available in the DRM-free version, how do I tickle iTunes in such a way as to let me upgrade this other album?
BTW, there ARE other albums, but I am trying to pick a very simple case of 2 albums by the same artist that are both available at this moment to make my point crystal clear.
    Thanks!
    Glen

  • Purchased DRM restricted music, now its on iTunes Plus

I purchased some music from iTunes that was DRM restricted, looking back at the artists album I see now that their tracks are on iTunes Plus and therefore DRM Free.
Is there any way of redownloading the unrestricted tracks, or do I really have to pay again just to use the music how I want?
    Any help input, Cheers.

    hi
Well, you will need to sign in > click on iTunes Plus, there will be this option 'upgrade my library' - check it out it will have all the new un-drm versions of the songs & videos you had purchased perviously.
Upgrade charge: 0.20p per song / 0.40p per music video.
Keep in mind you cannot upgrade per song or video... if have many songs & videos you will need to upgrade them together at once.

  • Burn limits in itunes plus

I am a newbie and confused!! It says no burn limits and it says burn identical playlists up to seven times! I'm still confused! Help! The way I read it is as long as you keep your music in purchased and don't put them in a playlist you have no burn limits.

This is very clear to me :-

  • ITunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from an external drive (or streamed from other wireless devices). Any solution in sight?

Video streaming of DRM movies, purchased from iTunes and other vendors, to any iOS device is not working.

I am not sure if you really understand the issue at hand. Possibly that you are just scanning, not reading the whole text, or simply that you just want to close a thread with your last words or derail it for whatever strange reason. So far you have been more destructive than helpful, but again this could be ignorance at best.
If you would have had the decency to read the entire thread you would have come to the conclusion that every manufacturer, I came across, has posted FAQ's to this issue but Apple. Find a short excerpt below:

Most forms of DRM (Digital Rights Management) will prevent playing movies on unauthorized devices or from remote storage hosted on wireless drives or NAS drives(Seagate Wireless, Seagate Wireless Plus, Seagate Central or Seagate Personal Cloud). Movies purchased from iTunes can be streamed to iOS 6 and iOS 7 devices which were authorized from remote storage (the video could be selected in Seagate Media App and would be played in a Safari browser), however in iOS 8 this has stopped working. A bug has been filed with Apple, however this functionality has not been restored. Therefore, DRM protected movies purchased on iTunes can no longer be played on devices running iOS 8.

Here are the remaining issues that we are aware of in the iOS 8 general release: • Video streaming of DRM movies (purchased from iTunes and other vendors): iTunes purchased videos and all DRM movies will not play on iOS 8 devices when streamed from AirStash (or streamed from other wireless devices). These movies are digitally protected and the AirStash app sends them to the Safari browser to play (which works for all prior iOS versions). These movies will play when the video is transferred to the iPhone/iPad and played in the Apple's Video App or the corresponding App from the vendor.

If this is the case and Apple will not address this issue or fix it since Apple believes that movies should be protected this way, you need to let the community know that movies are restricted this way. • Uprgrading to iTunes Plus

I have just read up about iTunes plus and have decided to upgrade the one album that i have purchased online. However, when i go to upgrade it tells me that i also must upgrade a music video that i downloaded on a previous pc that crashed and thus i no longer have that video. My question is, do i seriously have to pay to upgrade a video that i no longer have access to because i cannot re-download it from the iTunes store for free.

Thanks for the help, i have no problem updating the video as long as i get to watch it after i am done. I was just worried i would be updating a video that i would never get to watch, and even though its only $.60 its the principle. Thanks again for the info.

  • ITunes Plus Music

I don't know how but I apparently have 231 songs ready to be 'updated', or what ever iTunes Plus does. The total cost for 'updating' all of my songs/videos is $95.40. How on earth am I supposed to 'update' all of my songs/videos when I will never be able to reach that much money? Every month, as an allowance, I get $10; and right now I'm at $11.38.
I've been using, and downloading music off, iTunes for about 6 years. I would, manually, 'update' my songs/videos when I noticed they needed to be 'updated'. But how is it that probably 95% of my purchased items are being 'updated' all at the same time?
    What do I do?!

You don't have to update your songs all at once, you can update them individually and choose to update as many as you wish: iTunes Plus FAQ
