ITunes/Podcasting and Copyright Questions

I am a student at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and am creating an educational podcast. I wanted to use a song I bought from iTunes recently but want to make sure if it is okay to use. My purpose is not commercial, and I only plan to use roughly 25 seconds of this song. If I cite my source (Artist, iTunes) is this all I need to do, or is there anything else just to be sure I don't infringe on any copyright laws?

You will be breaching copyright if you use this song: your podcast being free, and your only using 25 seconds, doesn't come into it (there have been court cases over brief samples). It's a breach of copyright to use any amount of any copyrighted recording without the written permission of the copyright owner, or a valid podcast licence. Though it's fairly unlikely you would get noticed, it's a risk which could leave you open to legal action for damages - someone was posting on here recently that he'd had a demand for $25,000 for unlicensed use of a song in his podcast (I don't know the outcome).
There is music available you can use - search 'podcast free music' on Google, but as regards this specific song I'm afraid is the strict answer.

  • ITunes Error and another question

So one day I was listening to my 30GB Video Ipod and it froze. I went about restarting it with the hold button, and the rest of the stuff. However, this time it started it was a bit different, it erased all of the songs on my Ipod. Or so I thought. Now when I connect it to iTunes it says that over half of my ipod is filled with "Other" but there are no songs, videos, anything listed. What's the reason for this?
Also, I tried connecting to itunes store and it says "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. You do not have permission to access the requested resource." I'm using firefox and I'm not sure why it's not letting me connect.
    Thanks guys,
    Mike

Mmm, just been back into my iPod screen and my manual setting was no longer checked! Not changed by me so the install must have overridden the settings I had on the iPod. And guess what, not responding for about the 20th time in the past hour. I have new music to put on my iPod and new videos, I want to be able to do this and I just wish I had not spotted there was an iTunes update as I would not be having these problems. I wonder how much time all the people posting here have wasted since iTunes 7 was released? I initially lost everything on my Nano when I first installed 7 but the 60 GB video was fine. I have passed that to a friend and purchased the 80 GB and with the first release of 7 that was fine (other than not being able to add the playlists mentioned above), but now with this new update I am stuck with an iPod with only a fraction of the music I want on it - that's why I spent money on buying an 80 Gb version.

  • ITunes Podcasts & Smart Playlists Question

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
I have a 60gb Colour iPod and have nearly filled it, so do not want to sync any of the podcasts to it. I've disabled Podcast syncing in the options tab after connecting the iPod, but Podcasts are still syncing because I have a large range of Smart Playlists which are set to show me what I added by date. This means they are treating Podcast content as being "Added On" a certain date and hence appearing in the Smart Playlist and being synced.
It is my understanding that to disable this I have to add a clause to the Smart Playlist which says "Kind, Is Not, Podcast" - is this the case? To go through every playlist I have would take ages and can anyone advise if it's possible to apply the same criteria to all playlists? I tried to select more than one by holding down Control or Shift but it didn't work.
Any thoughts would be very gratefully received!
    Cheers,
    Edd

  • Podcast and genius questions

    I have a 2nd gen 32gb touch upgraded to the 3.1.2 firmware.
I downloaded some podcasts from itunes last night, via the touch (not on a computer). It showed the download cue and displayed them all downloading. When I went to view them on my ipod touch, only a few of the podcasts showed up. When I plugged my ipod into my mbp (snow leopard 10.1.6) today, all of the podcasts showed up. I can listen to them on itunes THROUGH my ipod touch (they aren't on my computer). However, I still can't SEE them on my touch. How do I fix this?
Secondly, I have a quick question about the software upgrade. I have the older 2nd gen touch with the 3rd gen firmware. I have apple's new headphones with the built-in mic and remote control. This lets me record stuff with the mic app and also use voip...but I was expecting to have the voice control thing that's advertised as part of the 3rd gen ipod. Does what I paid for not include that? There's also a separate looking genius button and display that is shown with apple's 3rd gen ipod info, but doesn't seem to be part of the upgrade I did. help?
    Thanks.

Anna is correct. The 2nd gen doesn't have Voice control.

  • Need an "iTunes podcast and Feedburner - Idiot's Guide" Any Advice??

I currently have a podcast (iTunes Store link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=211068389 )
That I would like to track activity and subscribers. I understand that FeedBurner seems to be the popular choice and I would like to go with it. Now the problem is I've scoured that site and I cannot seem to find a definitive "walk-through" that describes the process. I've also googled this topic and cannot seem to find a text I understand (I figured this whole podcasting out on my own after a LOT of headaches and foul-ups).
Does anyone know of a solid walk-through description of how to redirect the podcast feed through FeedBurner and make sure that iTunes still allows subscriptions, updates, etc...
I just don't want to goof up along the way and inadvertantly take down my podcast in the process.
    Thanks!!

    anaoshak,
    Welcome to discussions.
    Downloading artwork is absolutely free.
Your account can be charged for $1, but will be removed shortly after that.
You can read about this on this page.
How are Mac and PC connected? Usually, ethernet should be trouble free.

  • Itunes music and apps question

I was just wondering if you could get any type of virus or spyware from downloading music and apps (free apps and non-free apps) from itunes. Thanks for the help in advance!

I've never had any problems with that. I've been getting the free singles of the week since sometime in 2004.
Most malware from song files comes from torrent downloads.
Illegal free downloads, in other words, where you don't have a reputable source, like itunes or amazon.

  • ITunes 5 and Folder question

I create a folder and playlists in that folder. Now I want a playlist from the folder to be a playlist outside this folder (on its own or in another folder). How do I do this?
Or do I really have to monkey around with creating a new playlist with the same name, add the same songs to it and delete the first one?

Drag the playlist to the left, until you see a 'plus'-sign appearing.
Then release the mouse button and the playlist will be in the top level.
Or just drag it to another folder if you want it to appear in another folder.

  • Question about podcasting a terrestrial radio show and copyrights

I know podcasts can't use copyrighted music without paying, but I have a radio show that I want to submit to the itunes store as a podcast and wasn't sure if the fact that the station already pays ASCAP/SESAC/BMI for performance rights applies to podcasts resulting from those radio shows - I literally just want to post my weekly show as a podcast. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I have two questions about my podcast on iTunes - Image and Author

Hello. I have very recently added my podcast to iTunes,  by submitting the RSS-feed that is given by wordpress (that's where I have my podcast homepage) It looks allright, and the feed includes Name of podcast, title of podcast shows, description and in some cases even length of the podcasts. There's two things not showing though, and that's an image for the iTunes page, and the name of the authors.
I'm not sure if you're allowed to link to your feed like this, but here is however the feed that I've sent to iTunes: http://rodrost.wordpress.com/category/podcast/feed/ . I thought that the picture up in the right (of me and a friend) would be the picture showing up on iTunes. And I don't understand where in my feed to put in the authors. If you could answer my questions I would be very grateful, thank you.
    / Joar.
(This is how it looks on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/se/podcast/rodrost-podcast-podcast/id507886804 )

Posting your feed URL is not only allowed, it's necessary to get answers to most questions, so thank you for posting it.
You are missing some necessary entries in your feed. The second line of your feed should include the 'iTues declaration':
    xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd" version="2.0"
which should be added within the 'rss' tag. Without this iTunes cannot read the 'itunes:...' tags which are in any case missing. The image is carried in the 'itunes:image' tag and your name in the 'itunes:author' tag, and there are other tags which carry information - your podcast is working without them but some information is as you see missing.
This page includes a sample basic feed so that you can see what I'm talking about:
    http://rfwilmut.net/pc
I can't advise on Wordpress: it seems likely that you need the PodPress plugin to get this to work properly, but I'm not sure whether you can do it without.

  • Problem with podcasts and iTunes 6.0.1.3

    Hi everybody!
First of all, please excuse my poor English: I'm French. I'll try to do my best to write as well as I can.
I have some difficulties with podcasts and iTunes 6.0.1.3.
When I "sign up" (FR: "s'abonner") to some podcasts, they are not updated in my iPod nano indeed (and some others are), although iTunes says: "Your iPod is updated" (FR: "Votre iPod est à jour").
I have no way to put these podcasts episodes in my iPod...
    Could you help me please?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi iFriend,
try this, it worked for me:
    1) first of all, uninstall QuickTime and older versions of iTunes from your PC, using the "remove" button in the "install applications" tool that you find in the windows control panel.
    2) reboot the system
    3) turn off the windows firewall application; go into the windows control panel, double click on windows firewall and disable the firewall option
    4) if you have one, disable your Anti-Virus application; i mean its real-time protection.
    5) probably it's not necessary, but for being sure... download and launch the standalone installer of QuickTime (latest version)
    6) download and launch the iTunes + QuickTime installer from this web address
    7) as an option, i suggest you to download and install also iTunes Art Importer. It's a nice application, that allows you to import from the internet directly into iTunes the album ArtWorks of the selected tracks in iTunes. I installed it, and it works very well with iTunes 6.
    8) after all the installations, remember to enable both firewall and anti-virus previously disabled!
as i said, probably the 5th passage is not necessary, but i did it and it worked!
if you have any questions or feedbacks, just relpy to this topic. stay iTuned!
    bye, bye,
    Marco

  • Fresh Install of iTunes and some Questions

I just did a fresh install, set up home sharing, and did an iCloud match so my whole library is in the cloud.  I have my library file stored locally but my music files on my NAS.  Here are my questions:
    1.  I want to install iTunes on my wifes computer, set up iTunes match for her, set up shaing.  She will have a "shell" setup where notjing is stored as she is sharing with me and accessing the cloud.  Do I need to set up that computer under my user id even though she has her own?  I figure thats the only way to get her to iTunes match that I have?
    2.  How do I do this all?  Meaning, I will have a local library file for her but I need to point her laptop to the NAS with the files on them.  If I change her iTunes media file to that location on the NAS and check keep organized, will it screw up the files I have there?  I noticed when I did that on my PC it moved some fles around and I had to reassociate lost files to songs.  Took hurs.  Would iTunes have done that automatically for me somehow?  Should I not check the keep organized for her as she will not be adding music anyhow?  What is the harm either way?
    3.  How do I see my pictures on my ATV unit?  I thought I used to be able to but don't see an "app" on the ATV to do so, just photo stream which I do not want to do.  I thought I used to be able to access the pictures stored on my NAS?  Am I dreaming this or did it go away?  My NAS is an iTunes server and I swear I used to be able to access them from my ATV?    All I see on my ATV under my library is music, podcasts and movies.
    4.  I have my NAS sharing (home sharing) and I can see it on my laptop with iTuenes installed.  When I click on it I see only music, no movies or anything else, why is that and is it something to do with home sharing?  But, like I said I can see thse movies on ATV under my library.  I can also see my playlists on the shared on my laptop but nothing is in them.  I think that may be becuase they were set up under another library and now that I hve a new library file, they don't carry over?  I don't see any of said playlists in the sttandard iTunes interface under playlists, just under the shared however like I said, no files in them.  Also, the share comes and goes as in sometimes I see it sometimes I don't however I am always able to access the NAS from iTunes.  Strange, may be network issues?
    5.  Along those same lines, sometimes the home share just up and dissapears from ATV.  Maybe a network issue?
    6.  Lastly, I just did my first backup/sync to my new laptop with the frsh install of iTunes on it.  It gave me some sort of message that I can only sync to one computer and do I want to overwrite or whatever?  I said no and it did nothing.  After that, I did a back-up however it seemed to go fast and I also did a sunc.  The sync was three steps, used to be like six and I did not notice any of my new apps being copied to it.  Something is wrong here but not sure what to do, ideas?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

#4 - make sure you are sharing out all the items in your itunes library (music, movies, etc)
you should be able to do that under preferences
you may also want to check if it is pointing to the correct library
#1 - home sharing should work on the LAN w/out the need for signing in; the shared libraries should appear under "shared" in the left sidebar of itunes
think this may resolve the issues you have on #2 as well
#2 - itunes doesnt seem like it's built for that, but if you have any experience, i'd like to hear it.  this seems why home sharing is the usually the best route to go and just have one instance of itunes managing the library
but as long as the NAS or any media drives are shared out, connecting to it should not be a problem.  it's the writing to the itunes library that's the issue.  i haven't used Match so can't help there.
depending on your OS, you can either ctrl-click or option-click on the itunes icon,
which will also give you the option of selecting a library location upon launching itunes
you can navigate to the location of the library file and point it to that.
technically, you could do that but i believe the actual library has to be stored locally
as long as you still have all the media, then you can just rebuild the library
but for locally shared items, as in, all inside the home, i would leave icloud out of the equation
just use itunes sharing and it should be fine
