ITunes problem support couldn't help me

I need someone who really, really knows their stuff. I have a new MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.5, iTunes 8.0.2 and an iPhone 2G, 2.1.
Within OS X, iTunes has stopped connecting to the store. I get the error "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. An unknown error occurred (-4)."
My internet connection is fine. Everything else works. I can even successfully connect to the iTunes store from a virtual windows install on my MacBook using VMware Fusion 2.0.
I've tried creating a new profile, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, nothing helps. I've flushed the dns cache and done tcpdumps to watch the traffic, but there just isn't any. It seems like iTunes thinks it can't get to the store and doesn't even try.
I'm hoping someone out there has a better answer than, "get your install disk and start from scratch."

I have this problem as well. I am able to gift and wishlist songs, but no option to purchase anything. I've been away from Apple products for a year and this was me giving it a second chance. Very disappointing.
Latest update has been applied, computer is authorized, and all credit card info is current and correct. Any help would be appreciated if someone has a work around.
Is there a way to roll back to a previous version? I am not at all familiar with iTunes

    Instead of using Migration Assistant, the best way is to use the Target Disk Mode, so you will save headaches (Migration Assistant creates a new user with the transferred data).
    To do this, just connect both Macs with the Thunderbolt cable, and then, start the MacBook Pro holding the T key, so a Thunderbolt or FireWire icon should appear on the display. After that, go to the iMac, open Finder, and the hard drive of the MacBook Pro will appear on the Finder sidebar as an external drive, under "Devices". Just access to it, go to the folders with your iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and copy them to the iMac

    The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevent it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
    If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them or if you want to be able to put them back if it doesn't help, drag them to some other location. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistant the next time you launch iTunes. Note that you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
    If that still doesn't help, then try this:
    Bugie: Perform a Thorough & Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes/QuickTime.

  • HT2490 my audio volume control defaults to mute whenever I start the computer.  Preference settings have no effect.  Technical support couldn't help.

    Technical support could not help desite 30 minutes or more of trying various approaches.
    The technician "proved" that it is a system issue and not an individual "user" setting that is affecting the computer.
    Any ideas about what is causing the problem and how it might be fixed?

    Thanks for the inquiry and feed-back.  Tech support advised me to unlock the preference dialog box when I was logged in as the administrator.  We changed the volume setting to mid-way on the scale and rebooted but the volume preferences reset to minimum volume with Mute ticked.  He also had me try what I assume is a reset of defaults on boot-up.  I held the Command/Option/P keys and operated the power on switch, then immediately held down the R key which put the computer through a different start up sequence.  Once again the volume was muted and indicated minimum when I checked.  No luck either when we created a New User account and set the volume control to mid-way as previously mentioned.  Other approaches he suggested were too involved for me to accurately relate but involved deletion of some files associated with the sound system.  No joy which is why I have sought other advice.  Thanks anyway for your interest!

    i was having a phone call with apple support and the person i was talking with couldn't solve my problem, she left me on hold for about 15 mins then hung up on me, then she called again my phone rings for just 1 second before i could even answer to. I'm 100% sure it was meant !
    i'm a big fan pf apple and apple support, however i never expected this to happen, this is a very bad reputation for apple support, do you guys know how i can  report this to apple?

    So, the support person put you on hold to get more information, you got disconnected and they attempted to call you back and you jump to the conclusion that they just didn't want to help you? That's a pretty ridiculous assumption. Even if it were true, which I highly doubt, what do you expect anyone here to do about it?
    Call back. At that point, you can either ask for help on your technical issue or ask to speak to a supervisor and talk about the slight you feel was given you.

  • Downloading music to itunes problem/corrupt files please help!

    I'm having problems with my music as most of the files I download from cd's onto itunes & ipod are corrupt. Through most songs a horrible screeching sound will occur on many occasions.
    Not sure if this is my laptop or itunes causing this problem.

    Well, I'm happy we at least got the first problem solved.
    I would suggest Restoring the iPod in iTunes, even if you have already done so, try again.
    Next, go into My Computer, right-click the iPod and click Properties.
    Is it possible that something like a Read Only box got checked? Or something like that?
    I am sorry, but that's kinda all the help I can be, as I have never seen that problem before (although I am sure it is not just you). However, if you post back, I might be able to explain more, or maybe there is something you will notice that I do not know right now that will help.

  • Wifi connection slow after streaming, Apple support couldn't help

    I have since quite a while problems with my internet connection. I tried it in several countries, but always the same: As soon as I stream something or open to many browser tabs, my wifi-connection becomes terrible and stays terrible. It's definitly dependent on how I use the internet. If I open 3 youtube videos or the top10 Google search results, my wifi connection becomes bad. My Speed drops to lower than 1Mbit, but lots of timeouts. After a while it works again.
    What I already tried:
    -Reinstalling MacOS
    -Installing windows (same problems with windows)
    -Resetting SCM
    -creating new wifi environments
    -putting MTU to 1453
    -clear DHCP
    -deleting some files in the library for resetting connections
    -clearing browser cache
    -testing with Safari and Chrome
    -disableing bluetooth
    Now I bought a CSL Wlan Stick but there are not mac drivers out there and I don't have a CD-Drive for installing the drivers.
    What can I do?

    The only possible way that you can restore the data is by restoring the iPad from a backup. Did you restore from a backup at the end of the restoring process?
    Why was Apple support not able to help? Is the backup gone?

    While downloading an updgrade for my Nano I accidentally quit on the installation. iTunes froze and I had to force quit out of the program. Now when I try to relaunch the program I get:
    "The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file".
    Does anyone know how to fix this?

    I just bought an iPhone and i want to transfer songs from my pc to it. After downloading iTunes, i sync with my iphone. On the next day, when i want add more songs to my iphone, the iTunes display that it is a new library and all my data in iphone will be erased after sync. Why would this happen? Is that iTunes start a new library on every time it is opened?

    That is very common for Sony Vaio PCs. The Sony media management software deliberately erases the itunes library file.

    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
    How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
