ITunes Process is Unkillable in Task Manager

If I launch iTunes right after opening Windows 8 it will run. If I close it during a Windows session it will not restart. When I look at Task Manager when iTunes is running, it shows iTunes as a running application. When I close iTunes, it disappears from the Apps area and reappears as a Background Process. Because it is not a Background Process, it won't reopen because Windows sees it as already running. End Task has no effect on it whatsoever. These are also known as Zombie processes. With iTunes process continuing to run, this has caused other associated problems such as often having to do a hard shutdown by pressing the power button, or if the machine went to sleep with iTunes running, Windows won't wake up without my first having to again do a hard shutdown. Posts on the net have explained that I/O threads are not being properly terminated in the kernel during the shutdown sequence. Taskkill /f from the command prompt also has no effect. As there are others who have reported this issue with iTunes and other software in Vista, Win7 and Win8, however, this user pool is not huge, I expect it has to do with a conflict with another driver or service. I have tried disabling Bonjour and any other Apple accessory I could find to no avail. I tried using Windows Driver Verifier, but on setting it up, it promptly crashed my machine on reboot. While I don't expect a straightforward fix, I would appreciate any leads any tech savvy users might have on how to track down the issue.

Sounds like Firefox is "hanging at exit". That problem is frequently caused by an Extension or a Plugin. Read all of the following articles.<br /><br />
NOTE: Establish a habit of exiting/closing Firefox with Firefox button > Exit or File > Exit to allow an orderly shutdown of Firefox and closing of all of the files that Firefox has open.

Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing. Never see browser panel at all. Also tried to install Firefox 9.0, but the same result was observed.

Rather difficult to say what the problem may be at present but for general info please have a look at
    * [[safe mode]]
    *[[firefox will not start]]
    *[[firefox hangs]]
Note sometimes you may have to wait a while for firefox to shutdown completly, and if it has hung then as explained in the above articles you may need to kill any firefox.exe process that is still running (and maybe plugincontainer.exe)
Try starting firefox in [[safe mode]] e.g. by holding down shift key
    * do not make any changes in the first window, just click on continue<br/> ? Do you get as far as seeing the options window for safe mode ?
If firefox is crashing see [[firefox crashes]], this is easier to work through if you can get firefox to start without crashing on startup. Currently some firefox users are finding Firefox 10 crashes on startup, and a new version Firefox 10.0.1 is being released very soon to deal with this and another cause of hangs.

  • ITunes is 'running' (says the task manager) but it never shows up...

i have downloaded the latest version of itunes,
set up my firewall to except it,
done all those other things with deleting a file,
changed other settings that help topics have told me to do...
and it still won't open....like the title says, task manager has it as a process, but itunes is not physically open...
this has been going on for about a month now...
and i'm really getting annoyed with it.

First I'd say reboot, wait for your computer to fully boot, minimize everything, then open iTunes and watch for the license agreement. I know that for me it doesn't display in the task bar and sometimes after updates I forget that it's behind my firefox window and wonder why the heck iTunes won't start.
I'd also double check the entry in your taskmanager to ensure that it really is iTunes and not the iTunes helper that auto-loads. I would recomend using http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/processexplore r.mspx rather than the default windows taskmanager as it is much more robust.

  • Firefox will not open. Hangs at "connecting" stage. Non-responsive even to process shut-down via task manager.

Starting yesterday, Firefox will not open at all. It hangs at the "connecting stage." For hours. It will not shut down even using the task manager for applications or processes, and it locks up virtually every other application. I thought I managed to save an open Word document yesterday - it looked like a slow, but normal save during the Firefox hang, but the document was empty when I restarted my computer.
Even though my machine is not pentium 4 based, I tried starting using the Windows XP/M configuration, I downloaded and re-installed (over the top of) the existing version, I verified that no Mozilla processes were running before trying to start Mozilla, and tried creating a new profile. Absolutely no success. Every time (of the dozens) I have tried to start Firefox I have had to force a hard shut-down to get out of the application. I have now unpinned Firefox from my task bar because I keep forgetting and hitting it by reflex.
I am running version 11.0 (at least that is what I just downloaded - I am not positive what I was running yesterday). My system is Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core i3, 2.4 gHz, 4 GB RAM, 64 bit OS.
Next option is to restore to a previous version. If that doesn't work, I will uninstall and start over from scratch.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • ITunes will not open AND iTunes.exe will not LEAVE Task Manager

    Hello,
I am also having the same issue with everyone else in that iTunes will not open. This happened to me about two weeks ago and I uninstalled and reinstalled the version that came with my iPod. I figured that after a couple of weeks Apple would have figured out the glitch and fixed it. Wrong. B was asking another user if iTunes.exe was appearing and then disappearing in the Task Manager. I am having the oposite issue in that I cannot End Task in the Task Manager on iTunes.exe. What is up? Can anyone help me? Thanks for the support!

hi bummed! (you do realise that you're stuck with that alias for the forseeable future, don't you?)

  • ITunes 11.1 running in Task Manager but does NOT Open

I have looked areound and no one seems to be having this problem (that I can tell).
My problem started when I upgraded to iTunes 11.1 running Windows 8. When I tried to open iTunes, it never opens but if I open the Task Manager I can see it running (32-bit) with a couple other Apple programs. I have downloaded with both Firefox and Chrome.
I have tried the following things:
Completely uninstalled iTunes following the steps outline by Apple (included checking all folders for files).  Same thing happened when I re-installed.
Tried to install as the Administrator.
Tried to run using Windows 7 compatibility
Refreshed my computer (erases and resets everything minus personal files) and installed iTunes 11.1 before anything. Did not work.
Once or twice it would open but as soon as I closed and tried to re-open iTunes, same thing. Never opens but running in Task Manager.
I have no idea what to do next and am running iTunes 11.1 on an OLD desktop that is not sustainable.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Win 7 x64 Itunes and Quicktime Running in Task Manager nothing seen! Help

Ok I'm running out of ideas- I' I have uninstalled multiple time various version of itunes. It upgraded to 10 automatically then a few days ago it wouldn't run. Looking in task manager itunes and intones helper are running. Thought a simple wipe and reinstall would solve it alas no. Been trying all week various reinstalls of different versions, all the same thing occurs, It appears to be a system wide fault. Disabled Bonjour enabled- no difference. Disabled all windows services aside form the apple ones - no difference. Started in safe mode- itunes refused to start. Gave up and reinstalled 7 and it worked until a reboot (and also it itunes store and ipod drivers for Win 7 x64 are not there) where the same probelm occured. Installed airport seeing if it would update the relevant dodgy files in Bonjour.
Getting sick of finding why this is happening and I can't;t find where this bug is, and I've spent far too long trailing through the web trying to solve this and not one single one has worked so far!
    Please Help!!

Sorry, Itunes+Quicktime the intaller neither of them will open (they appear to be running in task manager however). Downlaoding the sperate intaller for Quicktime, the installer on its own, then quicktime runs and opens.

  • Firefox window is not shown and not even in the tasks bar, but there is a process running in the task manager

Clicked on the Firefox icon , but window did not appeared, checked in the Task manager, there is a process running with firefox.exe, and could not see any icon in the task bar adjacent to start button

I discovered that when the "Firefox is already running . . . ." message pops up I can fix it by doing the following [note: I get the same message for the Thunderbird e-mail program too] : 1. I open 'TASK MANAGER" and click on the "Processes" tab. 2. Next I scroll down until I see Firefox.exe *32 in the leftmost column (or Thunderbird. exe *32 if the message came up there), highlight that line by clicking on it and then click on the "end process" button on the right side on the bottom. 4. A pop-up window will come up but ignore its message and click on the "end process" button in the pop-up window. The program should then start the next time you click on the icon..
While that saves the need to restart your PC to fix the problem, I have yet to find any information as to the reasons for those two processes to show up in the first place. I'm running the 64 bit Win 7 Professional and do not know if that has something to do with those two processes running from time to time or not. The message comes up often but not all the time and I haven't been able to pinpoint any action on my part where the message comes up if I do '''X '''or the message never comes up when I do '''Y''' before closing Firefox or Thunderbird.

  • FireFox will not start, I even uninstalled it and reinstalled and cannot get it to open. When I click on the icon it seems like something is about to happen and then nothing does. No processes activate it Windows Task Manager either.

  • Catch the process terminate from the task manager

Is there a way to catch the event of terminating the application from the the
    processes tab in task manager?
I have created desktop app, and if a user termintates the app in the task
manager, I'd like to be notified. I tried windowclosing in windowlistner, but nothing seems to be

Have you tried adding a shutdown hook? There alot of subtleties to a shutdown hook. You can read the documentation for

  • Two java.exe processes running in the Task Manager in Windows XP

I tried to find the best possible place to post this and after spending about 20 minutes searching for an appropriate forum starting from java.com I ended up here. So forgive me if the is a wrong place and if there?s a more appropriate place for my question, please provide a pointer to it.
I don't know much about java and what it does but as the title says when I open the Task manager there are two java.exe processes running at the same time with about 20 000 k each.
One of the processes is coming from:
    C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya6.5\docs\jre\bin\java.exe
    and the other from:
    C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya7.0\docs\jre\bin\java.exe
in addition to that a jusched.exe process is also running coming from
    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_10\bin\jusched.exe
I rarely open the Maya 6.5 and 7 documentations but the two java.exe process are running all the time and I would like to stop them running when I don?t need them but I don?t know how.
I can't end these processes from the Task Manager; they reappear immediately after I end them.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

  • Firefox won't open, but the process stays in the task manager until I end it

I've tried everything that has been proposed before by you guys and I'm hoping you've found a solution by now. I've tried re installing, allowing Firefox through my firewall, and running it as administrator. I still double click on the icon and nothing happens other than the process showing up in the task manager.

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    Please report back soon!
    Hope this helps!
