ITunes + QuickTime Could not open key???

So, I'm trying to install iTunes onto my computer and I'm continually getting this messeage right as it finishes...
Could not open key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access yo that key, or contact your support personnel.
QuickTime is giving me serious trouble... Can anybody tell me what this message means?
  Windows XP Pro

I am having the EXACT same problem! This is what I'm getting.
Could Not Open Key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuicktimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
I uninstalled Quick Time and now I have no iTunes. This is trouble.

  • ITunes 10- "could not open key"

A while ago, iTunes wanted to upgrade on my computer, so I tried this and it didn't work for some reason. And I don't remember what happened exactly, because it was so long ago and I just kinda forgot about it. Until one day I realized that I don't have iTunes on my computer anymore. So I went to the apple website to download iTunes 10 and it won't download. I've tried redoing it so many times! Uninstalling all apple programs (quicktime, bonjour, mobile me, apple app support etc) and it still won't install! The error message that pops up says:
    Could not open key:
UNKNOWN\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\b2509927a207264182f8181add55 5d0. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
    then i click OK
then it installs "successfully" but really, when iTunes starts up then i get this message: Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application support is required to run iTunes Helper. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2.
GAH! this has consumed so much of my time I'm so angry!!!!!!!!
    then i click okay.

You could try the method in this post, but be careful as it involves editing the registry, and that can cause trouble if you don't know what you are doing.

  • HELP ME!!!! itunes wont open, error says could not open key......

I attempted to update itunes to the newest upgrade, and the upgrade was unsucceful, and now this error comes up everytime i try to open itunes (it wont open at all). the error says
    Could not open key:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\.wav\OpenWithList\iTunes.exe.

This makes no sense since this is on my home PC

hmmm. okay, if you're currently just getting the "itunes has encountered an error ..." let's try the following technique.
    preliminaries
download and save a fresh copy of the itunes 6.0.1.3 installer to your hard drive. (eventually we're going to run the install from there rather than online.)
    iTunes 6.0.1.3 Installer
switch off any antivirus and antispyware applications prior to any uninstalls, installs or repair installs.
    uninstall
use the complete uninstall instructions given in the following document to remove your existing itunes and quicktime:
Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows
... and if you run into problems on the uninstall, try using the Installer Cleanup utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
    reboot after uninstalling.
    reinstall
remember to switch off your antivirus and antispyware.
reinstall itunes using the 6.0.1.3 installer you downloaded previously.
if you get the "itunes has encountered a problem ..." error message again after that install, first check to see if your Quicktime will launch. if you get an error message when you try to launch quicktime, try using the following technique:
iTunes 6 for Windows unexpectedly quits when opened
keep us posted on your progress.

  • ITunes 10.6 error 'Could not open key...."

Hi there, so i was installing the new version of iTunes (10.6) and then in the middle of the process a box came up saying "Could not open key:UNKNOWN\Components\ ~~~~a lot of numbers and letters~~~~~\ ~~~~~~a lot of numbers and letters~~~~.Verify that you have sufficient acess to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Right now i have 3 different keys that show up during the installation, each in a different box.
I've tried to change in the regedit the permission of those keys, but it seems like didn't work.
So if anyone can help me please, i'll be very greatful.

"Could not open key:UNKNOWN\Components\ ~~~~a lot of numbers and letters~~~~~\ ~~~~~~a lot of numbers and letters~~~~.Verify that you have sufficient acess to that key, or contact your support personnel.
These ones are tricky. But the following instructions are worth a try.
First do a complete uninstall of iTunes and related components (but don't reinstall just yet), as per the following document:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    a. Launch regedit (Start >> Search Programs and Files >> type Regedit and open the regedit that comes up.)
    b. Access the following Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData \S-1-5-18\Components
    c. Perform the following actions
    i. Right Click on Components Folder
    ii. Select Permissions
iii. Select Full Control and Read Permissions options
    iv. Select Advanced Button
    v. Select Owner Tab
vi. Select to Change Owner to the Administrators
vii. Check the option “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”
viii. Select OK when prompted that it may not change all.
    ix. Select Apply
    x. Select Apply again
    xi. Exit the Registry Editor
Now try reinstalling iTunes again. Does it go in properly this time?

I really don't know what to do, I've tried a lot such as making sure it's uninstalled, using Windows Installer Clean up to remove Bounjour, Quicktime and iTunes. I've also tried running the installer in Administrator. I would really appreciate it if somebody could help me! Thanks!

    Hmmmm.
Just in case, let's try the Fixit from the following document:
Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled
(One of the things it does is check on installation patch registration ... which is associated with a related set of registry keys. I'm not sure how they're implementing the patch registration tool in the automated Fixit, but ... fingers crossed ... it might also be of some help with the \Components\ keys we're having grief with here.)

  • Tried to install ios5. Would not install. Also lost earlier version of itunes. Keep getting message Could not open key

Tried to install the newest version and lost all itunes on this computer. Followed instructions about removing and reinstalling iTunes, Quicktime, etc. Now I get message "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components|" and several letters/numbers afterward.

The first thing would be to get the proper version of Safari for your version of OS X (Tiger).
Go here to get Safari: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
Be sure to choose the bottom choice:
You will also need the latest security update for Tiger.

  • ITunes fails to update - 'Could not open key...'

Quicktime updates fine but Safari 5, iTunes and iCloud Control Panel all failed with the same message.
    I am completely stuck.

Let's try the following user tip with that one:

This error pops up in the middle of my iTunes installation; After hitting okay, the installation proceeds and then another error message reading:
"Apple Mobile Devices Failed To Start.  Please make sure you have sufficient privleges... etc."
I don't know what to do about both of these errors, so if you find a solution please e-mail me:  [email protected]

    try with this one

    Reboot it
Now download a fresh itunes from apple and try installing

  • Could not open key??? Huh? iTunes problem!

Well i've been trying for three days to get iTunes to download on my computer (Windows XP) and everytime i try it goes for a while and then a message shows up saying...
    "Could not open key:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE/Software/Classes/.cdda/Open
WithProgIds. Verify that you have sufficent access to
that key, or contact your support personnel."
...and I have absolutely no clue what it means. If anyone can help I sure would appreiciate it!

I get the same message and I have tried removing every vestige of Quicktime and iTunes and everything else which has been suggested. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any help forthcoming. Apparently, Apple is blaming Windows and will not help. If they knew Windows users were going to have so many problems, they should have noted that. It is either a matter of incompetence or negligent greed. I will never buy another product without reading the discussion boards first.

After following instructions for three different solutions that did NOT work; I found the solution that did work
on the support site for Syamntec.
Readers - Please, you must be VERY familiar with pc jargon and windows vernacular to accomplish the reset
of ALL the permissions in your registry.
Follow the ditrections below and pay attention to the notes for those running 64bit Win7.
Step one, back up the registry.
Step two, go to the MS KB: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf -ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en and download the file that installs subinacl. It is an MSI file, and will do a quick install of a few Microsoft files.  Hint: Look in the folder listed below, "subinacle.exe" may already be there.
Step three, create a batch file (subinacle.bat) with the following commands:  (Use Notepad - copy & paste, not the red stuff)
cd /d "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (only for 32bit/x86 machines)
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
For 64bit machines substitute for first line of bat file:
                        cd /d "c:\program files (x86)\windows resource kits\tools"
Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Command Prompt screen closes, may take 30 minutes or more.
Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again.
Ladies and Gentlemen; this worked for me and allowed immediate installation of two application packages I had been trying for three months!  (Including ITunes 10.5)
