ITunes+quicktime crashes my computer

Ok, here's the thing, I have downloaded the update for my iPod touch, and i tried to install the new itunes. but it starts the installation process and it will crash my system. I do not get the bsod, it just cuts to black. I am starting to get furious because now i don't even have iTunes on my computer. whats the deal, why does it keep crashing?

Agreed. This has been a problem for me for the last three upgrades to iTunes and Quicktime. I've solved it in the past by deleting Quicktime and downloading an older version... but that is not working this time. Now my iPhone has 2.1 firmware and I can no longer sync my calendar, let alone any of my music because I can't get iTunes 8.0 working (agian because everytime I try to install it crashes my computer). It'd be nice if Apple actually addressed this... or at least gave us an indication why this might be happening.

  • ITunes is crashing my computer

Hi, I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with my problem. My laptop crashes everytime I open iTunes. Once iTunes load, my computer starts to lag pretty bad until it totally crashes. The only thing I could do is to hold my laptop's power button until it completely shuts down. I'm using a Vaio VPCEA12EG, running on Windows 7 Home Basic 64-Bit.
iTunes used to work just fine on my laptop. I just started to notice this problem when I played an mp3 song one day, prompting it to load on iTunes, thus crashing my computer. Once it crashed, I thought that maybe it was just an isolated case since it was just the first time it happened. Then, a few days later, I plugged in my sister's iPod shuffle. It then crashed my computer again for loading iTunes. My sister was resquesting for me to load songs on her iPod so I was forced to keep trying, and much to my surprise, iTunes kept on crashing my computer.
I tried uninstalling iTunes (trying uninstall-install method), but it also ends up crashing my laptop. It just gets stuck on "Configuring iTunes. 31 seconds remaining." So basically, I CAN'T uninstall iTunes from my system. I'm planning to get an iPhone 4 soon and I can't afford not to be able to use iTunes on my own laptop.
Here's a summarized background of my problem:
    1. iTunes used to work on my laptop.
    2. One day, it just stopped working. iTunes crashes my computer everytime I try to use it:
    *When I double-click/open the program.
*When I sync an Apple product.
*When I open a music file with iTunes.
    3. The only thing I could do after iTunes crashes my computer is to hold the power button until my computer completely shuts off.
    4. I tried uninstalling it, but it ALSO crashes my computer. Bottomline, I couldn't remove iTunes from my computer.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? I hope someone can help me with this problem. I'm at my wits end as I can't even uninstall iTunes from my system. Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, mtglenwright. I was able to solve this problem. What I did was I uninstalled iTunes, then installed it again. But the catch is that it always crash the computer, right? What worked for me is that I LEFT THE COMPUTER ALONE UNTIL IT FINISHED THE UNINSTALLING.
Follow the order in this guide:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
The important thing is that you should leave your computer alone until it finishes each process. For example, when you click uninstall, just leave your computer alone until it finishes! As in DO NOT USE YOUR COMPUTER FOR ANYTHING. Do not use it to surf the net, do not use it to play solitaire, do not even move your mouse! It will take a LONG time. I actually left my computer overnight. When I woke up, I saw that it was able to uninstall iTunes! If you use your computer while you are uninstalling iTunes, your computer will most likely crash. I suggest that you do this at night when you absolutely don't need to use your computer for anything.
Anyway, this is what worked for me. I hope it will also work on your computer. Good luck!

  • Itunes video crashes my computer

I recently purchased a video iPod (my photo iPod broke) and updated my iTunes software. Now, every time I try to open the video page in iTunes, it crashes my computer. Either the computer freezes and I have to reboot or it goes blue screen and reboots itself. Per Apple customer service request, I have uninstalled iTunes, turned off my anti-virus software, reinstalled, but had the same problem. I've even gone through the whole msconfig window getting rid of unused startup processes. Nothing seems to work.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    thank you falcon8r!
a good thing we've got the engineers on the case, since:
    0x000000F4
i can't recall seeing that error code showing up here before. so we don't have a simple list of things to check through (based on my experience here). MS doesn't have any documentation on specific XP-related causes of the 0x000000F4, but we know from this MS document that you've got a problem related to a system process:
    Bug Check 0xF4: CRITICALOBJECTTERMINATION
... so if you're still keen on continuing our investigations, we might be able to get some more info about which process is in pain by checking the event logs. (this might help with giving us a shorter list of possibilities.)
right-click "My Computer", select "Manage" and click "Event Viewer". let's look through the Application and System logs for error/warning events that are regularly coinciding with the 0x000000F4s.
if you find candidate types of event, click on an example of each to bring up a small window. note down the Source, Event ID and Description of the process, and post back with your findings.

  • ITunes & quicktime crashes

    Hi guys...
I've recently installed iTunes & quicktime onto my laptop, however when trying to run either application they immediately crash on start up..
iTunes.exe give the error : "An unhandled win32 exception occurred in iTunes.exe [1132]
and as i have visual studio installed I'm given the option to debug.... VS gives the error as :
    "Unhandled exception at 0x0015dd6b in itunes.exe : 0xC00000005 : access violation writing location 0x048ad57b"
I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to completely remove the applications as described [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698]
It would be nice if iTunes worked... Any ideas ??
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated...
    Cheers
    A

OK, that error mesasge is very helpful
Quicktime does not install Quicktime.cpl in the system32 folder, but a number of codec packs that can cause trouble do install it there.
Have got any of the following: ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec Also WinAVI video converter. There may be others I don't know about.
If so uninstall them. Then go through the full removal process of iTunes/Quicktime as in your original link, but you can delete anything with Quicktime in the name from the system32 folder.
Then download fresh copies of iTunes and the stand alone Quicktime installers:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Install Quicktime and check that it works, if it does, go on and install iTunes.
If I am wrong about the codec issue, we will have to think again.

  • ITunes is Crashing my computer when I open or try to uninstall

    exactly like it says...
Just got an iPod and downloaded iTunes, when installing for the first time computer crashed on the click to finish screen.
After powering up again I clicked on the iTunes icon (to start iTunes) and the computer crashed again... (side note, durning this install iTunes didn't make it into the programs list for add/remove programs).
I then installed iTunes again into a different folder, everything worked then I attempted to open itunes and my computer crashed again...
Powered up again and tried to remove iTunes from the add/remove programs list and the computer crashed again (without removing iTunes)
I tried all of this again with my anti virus program not running (avg) and had the same problems. I will most likely find a differnt program to use but I would like to be able 2 use iTunes.

    Wow, sounds like a mess.
    Run this first

And then see if you can get QuickTIme to install properly. That is what gives most PCs a problem. iTunes needs QT to run.
    QuickTime standalone, not regular

Then try the iTunes install again, after QT is installed OK.

  • Itunes/quicktime crashes when trying to play video podcasts and 3GP files

    Hello all,
I've searched these forums and didn't see anything that might help me, so if know of any solutions posted already, please let me know. I have an HP laptop(AMD Turion 64 X2 2.0 GB processor, 2 GB or RAM) running Windows Vista Home Premium. I used to be able to play 3GP files at one time with Quicktime, but now I cannot. Then, the other day I tried to play a video podcast and it starts to play, then says, "Itunes has stopped working". Quicktime does the same thing with 3GP files. This was before my update to Itunes 8.0. It happpened with Itunes 7.5.11.1 or whatever the last version was. It obviously does the same thing with Itunes 8. I've tried completely uninstalling Itunes and quicktime, then reinstalling them both and I still have the same problem. Just a note: I tried playing the video podcast via Windows Media Playey, and it worked fine, except for no audio(I don't think WMP has AAC support) so I think something is conflicting between Itunes and my computer. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Why does Quicktime crash my computer? Windows 7 64 bit

So I like to edit videos and for my camera I need quicktime to view and import files. I got a new computer and whenever I open quicktime to do that, my computer lags a bit and then just crashes. It says that the card is not in the right drive (F) but it is in the F drive. It then slowly destroys my computer until it crashes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled too, it didn't work. Is anyone else having this problem and if so how do you resolve it?

  • Broadband upgrade has caused iTunes to crash my computer!

Help - I've just upgraded to broadband (frustration over slow software / music downloads finally overcame my reticence regards security) but now, whenever I try to download software updates or music from Music Store my computer crashes (even more frustrating - where it took days for anything to download before with unreliable success, now I can't download at all).
I can surf the web fine (as you can see since I'm able to post this problem). I can even open iTunes & access the Music Store, neither of which cause any problem but as soon as I start to do anything which isn't passive access & try to download the computer dies - any ideas?

  • ITunes LP crashes my computer

    Hello,
I'm on a Windows computer with Windows 7 (32 bit), iTunes 10 and I've purchased a couple of albums w/ iTunes LP's but whenever I try to open an LP it crashes my PC and I have to restart. Then I'll go into the LP again and it won't happen, but every time I initally do it my computer crashes.
Anyone know why? I've preordered The Beatles Anthology Box Set and I want to see if I can figure this out before I get it.

  • ITunes and Crashed Windows Computer

I have been using iTunes and my iPod with my Windows based computer (and LOVE IT). I need to wipe my hard drive clean due to a virus. When I reinstall iTunes, will my iPod replace all my music, videos and Podcasts back in the new iTunes? If not (because I've heard that it won't), what should I do? Is there a good method for "backing up" my iTunes?

    Hello Rachet Jaw,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with iTunes. I found a few articles I suggest for the issue you described.
If you are getting a white screen when accessing the iTunes Store, I recommend reviewing this article:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4123
If you are still not able to access the store or are getting a different error than just a white screen, I recommend the following articles:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368
    iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Back to square one: new iTunes and QuickTime CRASH, CRASH, CRASH

I've been struggling with iTunes and QuickTime ever since the upgrade to 6.0.4. Everything worked just fine until then, and has worked fine since I got my iPod last June.
A couple of days after the upgrade to 6.0.4 iTune started crashing, with the error message: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Please note this is only about using iTunes to play music on my computer (my iPod seems to be working fine.)
I've removed iTunes and QuickTime, reinstalled them, and this works for a couple of days, then iTunes starts crashing again (this has now happened twice.)
Strangely, this time, tunes in Party Shuffle at start up (from the last normal exit of iTunes) play just fine, but when I try to play something out of Library or swtich to a different genre or playlist in Party Shuffle, the programme crashes: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I've tried opening QuickTime alone, and it fails to open (no error message) it gets as far as the player, then there's a windows "thunk" and QuickTime closes.
So now I will uninstall, reinstall (starting with QuickTime, which seems to be the real culprit here) and maybe it will work for a couple of days. Computers are supposed to save time, not take up time in this way.
I don't seen any sign or word of a new version of QuickTime with a fix to this problem (many seem to be having it). How long do I have to go on this way. Perhaps the best is just to use another Windows Media Player or Nero ShowTime ... these seem to function without any sort of problem.

    Thank you Katrina and MossMan,
I do keep my computer under pretty tight wraps: Outpost firewall, AVG anti-virus, MS Anti-spyware. Ran the Ewido scan as suggested, Ewido did find quite a few cookies it considered of medium threat spyware ... removed these, and this did not resolve the problem with iTunes/QuickTime. Anyway, I'm not sure that cookies can cause programmes to crash?
I still think that it's unlikely that the problem with iTunes and QuickTime starting right after the upgrade to iTunes 6.0.4 and its QuickTime counterpart, is just a coincidence.
And if QuickTime is particularly vulnerable to some malware that none of the security programmes on my machine can find, and malware that has no effect on any other programmes, including other media players, then maybe this vulnerablity should also be something Apple should try to address.
    Walter
