ITunes/Quicktime/iPod
How can I completely and safely remove iTunes, QuickTime, iPod from my system? I am running Vista Ultimate and can not upgrade/uninstall without receiving HKLM\...\Current Version\Run errors. Microsoft insists this is an Apple problem and have not received any other suggestions to work (in Apple Forums). I think at this time this would be my only solution. I would like to install the new versions of iTunes and Quicktime (that I keep receiving Apple notices that these newer versions are available) but can not until other problem resolved.
Thanks for any guidance.
Don Thomas
I went through regedit and HKLM in registry down through ...\Current Version\Run I changed the Permissions for or added Don\PC-Don to Full Control at each Directory. Once completed I rebooted, using Control Panel I was able to uninstall the Programs and download the newer versions and install. This worked for iTunes, Quicktime and Adobe Reader.
I do not know how or what changed these Registry values in the first place. But, I think in the future before using any utilities I will make a backup of the Registry.

Help! Got new iPod Nano for Christmas and I STILL cannot get it to show up in iTunes - it has showed up in my device manager - with an over the icon - "The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Drivers. - Then another error - Wizard cannot find the software to instal -(my iPod did not come with a disk!!!) I have done the "R's" several times! Downloaded and installed and uninstalled several x's from iTunes. Changed USB locations - I have three to choose from. Now - I am 'repairing' the latest installation from iTunes and I get this "itunes + quicktime error message - service 'ipod service' (ipod service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services". Any ideas??? I'm not a computer genious....but I'm not a complete newbie, either! I am so FRUSTRATED!!!! This should be that difficult - I added additional RAM and it was a breeze and successful! This is just ridiculous! Any one have any other ideas???? I have read so much - even emptied the battery and recharged!!! HELP! Please! I just wanna hear some music!!! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Thanks - I got it to install by going into 'run' to get to permissions, etc. So that seems OK - but my computer is still not acknowledging iPod software and for some reason iTunes is now showing 'the URL could not be opened' when I go into Help for iPod. It's still not showing up in Itunes, either

9.1.0.79 update, iTunes/QuickTime.
This update came in today (6th April 2010), here in Ireland.
Please note that I am neither an iPod nor iPhone user. My only portable devices are BlackBerry and Nokia. My only static comp is XP.
During the update, the application looked for a file for "MobileMe" somewhere under Documents and Settings and failed. I let it try again. Failed. So I clicked "Cancel" and the update continued to conclusion satisfactorily.
Immediately afterwards, I was asked to instal "MovileMe". I agreed. The installation (very quick) succeeded. However, when then I exit-ed, I was asked again to instal it. I agreed. Same result. So I quitted.
I assume "MobileMe" is an application for use with an iPhone or iPod e.g. for contacts synchronisation, back-ups, etc. Can anyone confirm this?
If so, why does iTunes/QuickTime look to update an application I do not have and then seek to give it to me when I have no Apple portable device registered? Is this an omission in the update's configuration? Or, is there a means whereby I can register that I do not use these products and so should not be offered updates for their desktop partner applications?
To conclude, I find iTunes a very worthwhile device for downloading music. However, any update installation glitch is always a source of anxiety! As regards preference items, do you mean something like this: C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\nb.lproj\DevicePrefsMobileMe.nib?
No, those ones are program files ... language resource files, although I'm not sure off the top of my head what language the nb.lproj folders/files relate to.
The preference files are stored in the following two main areas on XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\
(Where username is the name of an XP user account ... so if you've say got three user accounts on the PC and everyone uses iTunes, there will be iTunes preferences files in six locations in total, because there's an iTunes preferences folder in each of those locations in a user account.)
Still not sure what the installer was looking for in there ... I've got a MobileSync pref folder at:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync
... but that's not quite the same thing.
Ah well, if iTunes is playing fine, I suppose we can take it as a good sign that nothing too peculiar was afoot with the installation mesage ... -
HowTo: iTunes+Quicktime on Windows Vista x86
This was fun. Some of you may have noticed that the iTunes + Quicktime installer may not work on Windows Vista Beta 2 (x86). Well, there's an easy work around:
Install Quicktime 7 Standalone first, then install iTunes.
Problem solved -- iPod works.
'Nuff said.
--IronfistYou may need to register vbscript.dll as in the following article:

This problem seems to have cropped up quite often for vista users. -

ITunes/Quicktime will not start.
iTunes/Quicktime will not start. Nor will anything quicktime dependant start. (Like Adobe Go Live) I recently reformated one of my Windows PCs and reinstalled m$ windows xp pro. I begain installing nessacary software and when I was done with iTunes/Quicktime (Why the heck is it now bundled?) it would not start. Could it be a codec conflict problem? I also tried reinstalling iTunes/Quciktime and nothing changed...
Any comments would be appreciated.hi trackmanxs!
then i got the new quicktime and i am gettin error -1316 and -1603....someone please help
here's what we'll try first with that one.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
next use the QuickTime component of the complete uninstall instructions in the following document as a guide to a manual removal of leftover QuickTime program files and folders.
Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows
once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try another careful standalone QT 7.1 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.
Kind Regards,
JuliasI am having a similar problem, and i cant contact ipod 2 ask 4 help - its not explainedo online:
my ipod will only upload video podcasts, no ordinary videos, except for one. they are all the same format (.MOV quicktime), and my i tunes has them all on it and plays them fine there, its just when i drag and drop or insert my videos onto my ipod any other way theydont get uploaded onto my ipod like everything else does, there seems no way that i can get my own videos onto it. only one video that isnt a podcast has ever uploaded, and its the same format as the others!
Any ideas or help would be apprichiated ( i cant spell:P) -
If your iTunes/Quicktime will not open CLICK HERE!!!
Ok so I too have been struggling on how to make iTunes/Quicktime work and i have finally fixed the problem.
1. Uninstall iTunes and Quicktime then restart.
2. Once you have restarted download and run the Windows Cleanup utility and remove anything that has anything to do with iTunes/Quicktime.
3. Delete The Quicktime, iTunes, and iPod folders from ur Program Files.
4. Delete Quicktime and Quicktime VR from the system 32 folder
5. Open Drive C: and there is a Quicktime file there delete that.
6. Pretty much you mus remove EVERY LAST file/folder that has to do with iTunes/Quicktime.
7. Download the stand-alone Quicktime installer.
8. Open Quicktime and if u have followed all the procedures correctly Quicktime should open.
9. Next download and install iTunes and then your are all done.
I did this yesterday and it worked perfectly.
Reply if u have any questionsexcellent news. glad you're up and running again.
here's what was probably going on. since itunes and quicktime (and ituneshelper) are internet applications, your Firewall will be keeping an eye on modifications to those programs. typically a new set of rules is generated for the new versions of the applications. so it's possible for the Firewall to allow the earlier version of the application, but balk at the newer one (because there's different sets of rules for each one).
so if you run into this sort of thing again after an upgrade, try checking through the exceptions that you firewall has set up for those new versions of the applications. -

I have a lot of films I've downloaded in .avi format. I mostly watch them on my MacBookPro using the freeware VLC, but when it comes time to travel I'd like to have them ready to watch on my iPod Classic.
Is there a way to convert these .avi files not only to for the iPod (which I know I can do via "export" in Quicktime Pro) but also to play from within iTunes at the same quality level they are as .avi files?
Meaning, is it possible to have just one version of a video that will look as good on the 15" laptop monitor as well as an iPod Classic?
Also, if this is possible, is there a way to batch process all of these .avi files I have? With QT Pro I'd have to do it one by one.
Thanks...
ScottWell if you can convert it and it still looks good on the "big" screen, then it will look fine on the iPod.

Unable to update or reinstall iTunes or iPod software
I hope someone very knowledgable can help me with my dilema-
it appears that the driver for my iPod has become corrupted,
since all my songs no longer will display on it. I've attempted to
update and reinstall both the iTunes and iPod software, but each time
results in "1607: Unable to install the InstallShield Scripting Runtime."
I went to InstallShield's site and the Microsoft knowledgebase,
but nothing attempted so far seems to correct the problem(s).
Does anyone have any solutions? Please help!

ITunes nor iPod Updater is listed in Add/Remove Programs
Please help! The Ipod updator nor iTunes is listed in the add/remove programs list. Can you help? Is it safe to delete the iTunes folder in program files and just reinstall?
hi Bryce!
when you find yourself in this situation, first download the Windows Installer Cleanup utility, and use it to remove installation registry entries for your Quicktime, iTunes and Ipod Updater:

and then use the clean uninstall instructions in this user tip as a guide for a complete manual uninstall:

There is this knowledge base article that explains how to uninstall iTunes
Troubleshooting iTunes and iPod Software installation on Windows
In particular, you need to download / install / run the Microsoft Install Cleanup Utility.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
You should also run the Quicktime standalone installer first. This will sometimes report errors that the iTunes installer doesn't.
