ITunes Rating Stars Not Solid.

I've noticed from time-to-time that my rating stars seem to be hollow and no longer solid. What does this happen?

User5910 I will try to answer all of your questions throughout so please read through.
You misread that example.  The example of "Any" doesn't reflect any track, movie, podcast etc that is a "Nested formula" in a Smart Playlist.  You have the ability to tell the play list that "any" or "all" of the criteria must be met using this.  The use of this (and the subsequent Album Art ratings which are indented) reflect what you should see.
Before pressing the "Plus" button to add a new rule press the Alt/Option key.  This changes the "+" to ellipses "..." and by selecting this you enter into the "Nested Formula" option where a string of rules can be created which act differently.
In the example above I told the Smart Playlist to look for any "true" instance for any "Album Rating" that IS NOT * - 5*.  It sounds reverse logic but I was telling the playlist I want to return values for any album that is rated.
In another way to read it; "Return any item that does not have a 1 * rating, 2 * rating, etc."  Meaning that only 0 * ratings would be returned.  The nested formula had to be used stating "Any" vs. "All" because no track will have all 5 ratings (meaning *, **, ***, ****, *****) at one time.  So I am saying that if any of the conditions are met then it is a true statement.  No one track would have all of the conditions met.  The use and understanding of any vs. all is key in this type of filtering.  An example is an track can be "any" one of the genres blues, rock, metal, classical but it wouldn't be labeled as "all" of them.  Understand?  (of course someone could try and build a stupid genre like blues/rock/metal/... but that isn't the point of a single field for that track.)
As for the album rating when you do one track's rating.  That is true that the ratings appear.  ...but it doesn't impact my Smart Playlists unless I specifically rate the whole album.  ...I am unsure why it is for you?  I just tested an album with no ratings.  I added a rating and did a very simple playlist looking for that any track by that artist with greater than 1*.  ...I am a little cloudy on why that is happening to you.  I CAN confirm that if I explicitly rate an album (even without any specific tracks rated) the whole album appears in my playlist.
It appears iTunes handles an explicit "Album Rating" differently than the implied rating that occurs when a single track is rated.   Try unranking your individual tracks and then also undoing any "album rating."  ...this is a test unlikely to resolve it.
...but the real solution for you seems to be creating a playlist the features "Plays" (greater than or less 0) or even a playlist that focuses on "Skips".  There are many options to do this without messing with ratings.  It appears you are trying to use ratings in a way that it isn't designed for to some degree.  I used to use them similarly but now I expanded the categories I use in Smart Playlist creation.  It has really helped.
In your workflow your "Play" would be 0, but your "Skip" should register as 1.  Skip is a key metric you can filter by.
I admit I didn't understand the portion of when, why, and how you determine which podcast to remove.  You rate items that you want to remove?  Sorry on that last part I am confused.

  • My Rating stars not appearing properly

    Hello,
    This has been a problem on iTunes for me for a while but I only really need to sort it out now.
    As you can see in the picture at this link:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v515/Frenchy21320/screenshot.jpg
    My rating stars aren't appearing as they should and thus I can't set any smart playlists. This issue is only in the smart playlist creator however.
    Thanks for any help in advance!

    OK sorry I haven't found an answer to you problem. I did some experments on my system and I found that if I lower gracphics hardware accelatation to the level where DirectDraw and Direct3D are disabled, the stars are not displayed.
    Perhaps the is a pointer to the source of the problem.
    If you want to continue with this, another Quicktime possiblity, some Quicktime problems are only resolved by full removal of Quicktime rather than a simple uninstall, the link below gives a method, but leave out the iTunes stuff.

  • ITunes bug? Rating stars won't click-drag left-right anymore

    The latest iTunes patch (v10.1.0.54 running on Windows 7) seems to have an annoying bug: When I'm rating a song, it immediately takes my initial click, regardless of whether I hold down the mouse button -- whereas I used to be able to click in the area where the rating stars are, hold down the mouse button, and then drag out the stars to the rating I wanted, e.g. 4 stars. Now, however, iTunes ignores the fact that I'm holding down the mouse button and sets the rating at whatever position I initially click, e.g. 1 star.
    The reason this is a super-annoying problem is that I only ever listen to smart playlists that filter out songs with low star ratings. So now as soon as I click a song to rate it, if I happen to initially click less than a 3-star rating, it immediately disappears. After I'm finished cursing at the computer, I have to go find the song under my general Music Library and re-rate it so it will show back up in my "smart" playlists. Grr.
    Incidentally, I was able to drag the stars as normal one time -- but other than that one instance, it has not worked at all since the most recent patch. Please, Apple, please please please fix this bug. It's causing me a serious headache.

    UPDATE: This bug only affects iTunes configured to allow half-star ratings.
    I normally have my ItunesPrefs.xml file configured to use half-stars, with this line:
    <key>allow-half-stars</key>
    <data>
    dHJ1ZQ==
    </data>
    After testing removal of the line, the click-drag on whole stars works normally. So it appears this bug exists only for those who only use half stars.
    Is there any hope of Apple fixing the click-drag problem when half-stars are enabled?

    How do I get my assigned asterisk now again into itunes?
    I have my stars only on my iphone and if the iphone is connected with itunes, then it wants to delete the iphone, but last then my stars lost.

    Thee are two ways that I know of.
    - Restore the new iPod from the backup of the old one. See:

    App data is not included with the apps in your iTunes library. Thus, just syncing the apps from your iTunes library will not get the app data like saved games.

    Most likely you have set the wrong file as the external editor. You don't want the obvious one; that's just a link to the welcome screen. Go back and choose this one, which is hidden away inside the folder Support Files:

     Hi,
    One of my ex-colleagues has installed a NI-DAQ 6.5 in our system. [And I do not see any other naitional instruments card in the CPU of the computer, may be he removed it] I deleted the account and all his files in the system. When I am trying to install version8.0, its not getting installed and giving me a message that I should uninstall the previous version by going to Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
    I tried doing that, but the "Change/Remove" button does not seem to work...[There is no response and so unable to install the new version...]
    Any idea how can this problem be solved?
    It is a windowsXP operating system with SP2 installed on a machine with P4 processor.

  • HT201210 After downloading latest version of iTunes it will not open.  This error message is displayed;  The program can't star because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.  Then a second error box

    After iTunes requested that I download latest version on PC it now will not open.  2 error messages appear.  first:  The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.  second:  iTunes was not installed correctly please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).  I have tried reinstalling a number of times and restarting computer but no luck.

    This happened to me today as well post installing the latest version of itunes.   I did a search on google for the error and came across a recommendation to :
    Note: Start Windows in Safe Mode to complete any of the following steps if you're unable to access Windows normally due to the msvcr80.dll error.
    If, and only if, you're receiving the msvcr80.dll is missing error when you open Apple iTunes, do the following: (skip this step if your msvcr80.dll error is occurring with a different program)
    Uninstall from Windows the following five programs in this order: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and finally Apple Application Support. If you have iCloud, remove it as well.
    Uninstalling these programs in Windows is done from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
    Note: Songs and playlists in iTunes will not be removed when you uninstall the iTunes program or any of the other, already-mentioned Apple programs. If you'd still like to back them up, they're usually located in the My Music folder in Windows.
    Download the latest version of iTunes from Appleand note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
    Run the iTunes installation as an administrator. If you're not sure how to do that, see How Do I Open an Elevated Command Prompt? for help. That procedure shows you how to open the Command Prompt program as an administrator, but the steps are essentially the same for anything, including the iTunes installation package you just downloaded.
    A general overview of removing and reinstalling iTunes can also be found here on Apple's site but the above procedure seems to work better in this particular situation.

  • Empty / White Rating Stars won't go away

    When I rate one or more songs on an album, iTunes automatically gives estimated ratings for the rest of the songs on the album as white or empty stars. Which I don't like.
    Formerly, I was able to fix this by going to album view, right click on the album and set rating to zero. But with the last software update this fix doesn't work anymore.
    Any suggestions?

    Are you talking about "Rating" or "Album Rating"? There appears to be a difference. I didn't even really know what you were talking about and did a Google search. Then I made a smart playlist for myself of all of my songs with and album rating not zero. The vast majority of my library popped up.
    My suggestion is that you don't assign an Album Rating to any song. The Album Rating appears to be consistent throughout all of the songs from an album (which would only make sense). I gave one song on Doc Powell's +Doc Powell+ an Album Rating of 5, then as I selected the rest of the songs on that album, they went from 4 empty stars to 5 stars. The "problem" is that the one unrated song from that album suddenly had 5 empty stars in the Rating column. Well, no, if I thought that song was worth 5 stars, I would have already given it such a rating! I presume rating the song would replace the five empty stars with the number of stars I want the song to have. I selected a song and returned the Album Rating to zero, so all of the songs went back to 4 empty stars, and my unrated song from +Doc Powell+ went back to 0.
    Apparently, iTunes takes the average of the Rating of songs on an album to suggest an Album Rating with empty stars. That rating will be the same for all songs on the album. However, if you assign an album an Album Rating by giving one of the songs any number of stars in the Album Rating column, it will suggest that value with empty stars in the Rating column for any song you haven't given a solid rating within that album. That actually makes sense to me.
    Solution: don't give any song an Album Rating. I don't even have that column showing in my playlist views. Make a smart playlist where the criterion is Album Rating is not 0; then select one song from each of the albums and change the Album Rating to 0. You can live with the empty stars in that column.
    Does this help?

    The iphone//ipad/ipod is not a backup/storage device.  The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The exception is itunes purchases.
    There is no free, or Apple supported,  way to extract any other music.
    It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything back.
    Iphone sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content from the iphone and replace with the content of the new computer.

  • Black box for Rating Stars

    This is annoying to say the least.
    Since iTunes 8.0 there is a black rectangle covering the stars in the ratings information when viewing the details of a song or playlist. The rating in the main browsing window are fine as well as when I right or Control click on a song. Only in the information window. With the rectangle up, I can click the Stars locations to change a rating I just can not see what I have picked. It dose not happen all the time, and I have not seen a pattern to what causes it to happen. Once it happens, I will have to restart my computer to clear the fault. Restarting iTunes only will not help. As it is a glitch in a shared property window I am guessing it could be memory or video driver related related.
    I have read through a simular posting http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7947881&#7947881 that did not help. So I will share that I have an AGP ATI Radeon video card with the current drivers from AMD/ATI and I have even gone as far as to reinstall the video drivers and iTunes.
    Ideas? Anyone else notice this?

    So I finally upgraded to 8.0 as well, and I'm now up to repairing Quicktime four times in the last 48 hours. The repair works for a short time, but then it goes right back to the black box. I have significantly more songs than I do have space on my ipod, and the star rating is the only way to filter the songs that I actually want to listen to (on my ipod) versus the the songs that I already own.
    Is there any other fix for this - surely more than three people have experienced this issue? How is it that I've yet to see a benefit from upgrading to new versions of itunes? I think 3.x is where I began losing confidence. The post holiday lull would be a great time for apple developers release a patch for this.... I'm just saying...

  • Hollow rating stars

    Is the a way to remove the "hollow" rating stars?

    This is bugging the heII out of me as well.  I have a podcast that has over 400 episodes (it's a music podcast so I keep them all).  I have a hollow 4-star rating for the podcast under "Ratings", not "Album Ratings" (the latter has a 4-star solid rating but cannot be edited).  None of the individual podcast episodes have any ratings at all.
    I cannot do anything to get rid of the hollow 4-star rating for the podcast.  Rating the podcast does indeed apply that rating to all the individual episodes, but if I then remove the rating from the overall Podcast, the rating goes away for all episodes and the hollow stars return.  No matter what combination of things I try, I can't make the hollow stars stop appearing, and automatically appearing on all episodes that don't have an individual rating of their own.
    What is the deal with this?  I've seen no official explanation of this behavior that makes any sense.  I understand the idea of it being an average of the individual episode ratings, but that is clearly not the case here since my podcast has NO ratings on any episodes.  So what the heII??
    Is there actually a solution for this?  Most of the threads I found on this go back several years or even as much as 5 or 6 years.  This is far from a new issue and it seems that it bugs an awful lot of people.

  • ITunes rating issue

    Hi everyone,
    I have been having a issue with iTunes rating some new music when importing it. It will show my normal star ratings I put in, but then on some albums it shows all 5 stars but the are empty and just outlined. When I sync my iPhone it puts these on My Top Rated playlist and I can not rate them back to 0 stars. Below is a screenie...please let me know if anyone knows how to fix this.

    {quote:title=Chris CA wrote:}No, it will not. iTunes does not work like this.{quote}
    Sorry, but it does work like that in certain circumstances, like mine.
    {quote:title=Chris CA wrote:}I don't rate my albums and none of my songs have hollow/empty star ratings.{quote}
    That's good for you, but it doesn't help anyone who IS getting automatic song ratings, like I do.
    {quote:title=Chris CA wrote:}Keep in mind their is a column for both Rating and an *Album rating*.{quote}
    Thanks, but I understand the difference between the two - I even specifically noted the difference it in my post
    {quote:title=Chris CA wrote:}An autorating (empty star) will not transfer from an album to a song and vice-versa.
    If it did, then when you rate one song 5 stars then every song on that album would automatically go to 5 stars. It doesn't.{quote}
    That's the entire problem right there. I have NEVER rated an album in the entire time I've used iTunes (since 1.0) yet I frequently find that I have to unset an Album Rating (ALBUM, not SONG) that has automatically been applied by iTunes. It seems to occur mainly when you don't listen to the album all at once and rate one song at a time over several days or weeks.

  • My Rating Star Error

    I am on a PC/XP and the rating stars do not show up when i try and create a Smart Playlist of ratings from say "*" to "***". It just shows a black bar instead of stars. This has persisted in the last 2 versions of iTunes. Very annoying. The stars do not show up in the rating area if i do a "get info" as well but they do show up in the track list. I can not edit this "black bar" area but i can edit the stars in the track list. It is merely a black bar where the stars should be. i can not make the bar smaller to represent a smaller rating. I can not create an accurate smart playlist. check it:
    i have even tried to edit the XML but there is some weird garble that represents the "Smart Criteria". ???????????

    iTunes STORE not “connectable” with my otherwise perfectly-working internet connection, viable, up and running for all other uses.
    Simply put, firstly, I can't connect to the internet when I click on Radio.  People are quite suspicious that this is Apple incompetence or your company's famous arrogance for this commonly-suffered problem that you won't or “can’t” fix.
    Read the many web comments and you won’t be pleased with yourselves: the suspicion is that if you ruin internet radio on iTunes, Apple will somehow make more money on music downloads, etc. Bull.
    Also, thirdly, my old playlist of 20 or so internet radio stations in the Ambient category STILL PLAYS !
    Then fourth, I installed the latest available version of QuickTime Player 7.app Version 7.6.6 but it didn’t solve the problem either. I had QuickTime Player.app Version 10.2, but substituted what Apple website said was the latest, LOWER NUMBERED QuickTime Player version of 7.6.6
    Fifth, I can't connect to iTunes store no matter what I do or what user group's advice I try. So I can’t buy or download anything from iTunes. Bad for business.
    Sixth, I updated to the latest version of iTunes but this weird problem remains. All suggested Apple fixes or user group fixes are useless. Where is Apple’s famous technical competency, vaunted customer support?, and user-friendly product reputation? Get it back, please.
    Solve this problem of yours ASAP for us, your numerous disgruntled, dissatisfied customers of iTunes. You can do better, should, and really –in all fairness- must.
