Itunes Read Only

Hi,
I am trying to import my Itunes library from my old computer onto my new laptop. I perform a restore from dvd which all goes well, but when I shutdown Itunes and reopen it again everything is gone. A check of the windows folders shows that all of the music is in the correct folders, but Itunes won't display any of it. The Itunes interface is the same as when I first installed it. Its like it is read only somehow, excpet that I know it has loaded the music onto the hardrive ?
I even tried turning on Genius, which worked ok, but again when I shut Itunes down and reopened it Genius was off again.
Anyone know what might be happening ? Is Vista somehow not letting me update the Itunes files?
Thanks
Anyone

Welcome to AD!
I don't think it's Vista. I suspect it is some Vaio software like other Vaio owners have discovered, seems to deliberately erase the itunes library file.
Here is an older topic on that, set your AD display options to threaded and read most of the posts that explain different ways to get around it.

  • ITunes & Read Only permissions..

    Hi..:))
I cannot understand why if i set the permissions of a song as "Read Only", then ITunes refreshes the last played date, the counter etc...

Things like play counts, rating, date last played, etc. are not stored in the song itself but instead are stored in your iTunes database file. Therefore locking down the track will keep people from being able to change things like the name of the song, year, artist, etc. but will not prevent iTunes from updating the database for things like ratings and last played.

  • Using iTunes Library with a read-only account...

Hi! I use my HD connected to my AEBS and to create some accounts in which people can use information on the shared folder that is created when the account preference is chosen. I later copied my iTunes library in the same folder so that everybody had access to it. Most of the users I created have restricted access (meaning read-only access). The ones that have full acces had no problem but the ones that have read-only access, when they try to choose the iTunes library, recieve a message saying "The folder "iTunes" is in a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.". I clearly understand what the problem is and why it is not letting those users acces it but does anybody has an idea on how I can make the iTunes library accessible to the "read-only users"? Thanks!

iTunes was NOT built for multi-user "write" access. Allowing write access to more than one user of iTunes "concurrently" is a recipe for disaster: sooner or later your iTunes database will get corrupted. You have been warned.

  • ITunes Keeps Freezing, Music Folders Keep Being Marked Read-Only???  HELP!!

Recently I have been completely unable to access my iTunes for more than 15 seconds before it freezes up and I have to end the program. When I checked the properties for my My Music folder and my iTunes Music folder (and all the folders within these folders), I noticed that the Read-Only box is marked - not checked, but filled with another, smaller box.
When I uncheck the read-only box on all the folders and go back up to the My Music folder, I check the properties and notice that it is STILL marked as Read-Only. This is driving me completely insane, as I can do NOTHING with my iTunes without it freezing. Can someone please help me out???

It's normal for folders to be marked read only, what ever your problem is, it is not this.
Have you seen this article on troubleshooting freezes:

  • Why can't iTunes play music from read-only external hard drive?

I have a write-protected external hard-drive which I keep all of my iTunes media on. iTunes recognizes all of the files, including the metadata on the id3 tags, and can find the files in Windows Explorer. However, it cannot play the files while the drive remains write-protected. Is there a work around for this as I would prefer to keep the hard-drive protected? Why does iTunes require write-access to play songs? Other media players have no problem playing from my read-only external hard-drive. Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When you say you can't play through both devices at the same time, what happens when you try, are you able to select multiple speakers, do they deselect themselves, do you not get the option or does it just not work when you select multiple speakers.

  • After moving iTunes, external drive sometimes becomes read-only after reboot

I had some system corruption a few weeks ago, and had to restore my system.  As part of that prolonged effort, I decided to move my iPhoto Library and iTunes Library to external FW800 drives.
I had terrible problems initially with these drives mounting read-only.  I found a relatively quick work-around, and that seemed to fix the problem.  But I still have them periodically mount read-only, and I can't D/L iTunes updates, etc.
Why do they keep doing this on a reboot?  Very frustrating, as I need to reboot as part of the fix, and I'm always in the middle of something else, and can't reboot at that time.

Oh, as part of this, not sure when the change was made, OSX used to keep the mounted volume name in /Volumes, even if the volume was ejected.  Would cause an occasional problem - but very rare.  I notice now that ML seems to create/delete these mountpoints automagically - and that's part of the problem.  They get incorrect permissions when the volume mounts, and I (user I'm logged in as), can't write to the volume without some background shenanigans.
    My process is this:
    Unmount problem volume
Drop to terminal, and "sudo mkdir /Volumes/<mounted_volume_name>"
Remount volume via Disk Utility (you now get a "<mounted_volume_name> 1" - with CORRECT permissions)
    Unmount the volume again
Remove the created directory (i.e. undo step 2)
Remount the volume - 99.9% of the time that seems to fix it.
Reboot to be sure - and it stays for a while - then at some point becomes a problem again.
Not sure if it's something in ML that's an issue - or something in iTunes or iPhoto (but can't see how they would affect the permissions when the system reboots and you login)

  • Read-Only iTunes library - possible?

    iTunes developers please note.
I would like to share my iTunes library from a NAS to my household, but with a catch. The NAS export is setup as read/write for me because I am the one who controls the music library and my kids attach in read/only mode.
The reason for this is that I have way spent too much time fixing broken links, missing track, wrongly downloaded cover art, etc - the result of 7 and 9 year olds not reading the text before clicking 'yes' or 'continue'
I have seen other posts asking similar questions (using network drives, extreme length of time to import, etc) but not quite this specific.
I guess I can live without a common podcast library on a NAS being a function but any help to solve this fat-finger problem greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar named Music, rename the iTunes folder inside, launch iTunes, and drag the iTunes folder into iTunes. This won't preserve playlists or other metadata.

  • After iTunes 6 Upgrade iPod is "read only", can't update

I installed iTunes 6 - now at 6.0.1 (3), and my iPod seems to be read only. I reset the iPod, and it did transfer all songs back to the iPod, but will not allow me to create play lists or modify the iPod in any way. When the iPod is selected (highlighted) in iTunes, all songs are greyed out, as if I do not have the appropriate access to modify the iPod itself.
Additional information: Mac OS 10.3.9, iPod updated to v 2.3
    Any help would be appreciated.

I stumbled onto this thread after I hooked up my iPod video to try and synch it. I too got the "Corrupted iPod" message. I usually don't eject my iPod, as it doesn't disconnect from Windows cleanly. After going through a few steps, I have my iPodsynched & ready to go. (Perhaps it's just a bug in the new version of iTunes, which I have to admit is more aesthetically pleasing).
I clicked the "Eject iPod" button in iTunes.
I selected "USB Mass Storage Device" from the safely remove hardware wizard
I reset the iPod (Switch to HOLD & back, then hold down MENU & center buttons until screen turns off)
    Unhooked iPod from data cable
    Hooked iPodback up
    iTunes recognized and synched...
I don't know if this will help anyone, but I'm hoping that it will. Post back letting everyone know if it succeeds or fails.

  • I want to add cd movies to iTunes but I have a read only CD

I have some movies on CD that I bought.  I want to put them in iTunes and then place a few on my iPad to watch while I travel on the airlines.  But after getting the info on the CD it says it's read only.  I have done this before by dragging the movie file to iTunes but now it won't work.  Am I doing something wrong or this the movie industry trying to protect their copy rights?  Anyhow it would be nice to be able to do this since it seems mac power supplies don't work on Korean Air.

It is illegal to RIP commercial DVDs and this cannot be discussed in these forums.

This has never been possible (dragging a movie from a regular DVD movie to iTunes).

    Hi
    My first thoughts are
    • iMovie ill behaving - Trash the iMovie pref file - use to set things right
    • in reg. to Photos - Did You change iPhoto Photo Library - Then iMovie get's lost as it peeks into iPhoto on start up to see where photos are stored. Set iPhoto back to first Photo Library (when iMovie is not running) then start iMovie.

  • Read Only Folders

It may have been discussed before but I haven't found it. I from when I found out about mp3s have always saved Artist-track title release year. It works for me. So why when I rip from Itunes am I stuck with their format. I recently found out that WMP would change the file to what I wanted as said above. Now I find Folders Are Read Only, I went to Properties and changed it. 2 secs later "Read Only" Add to that It got album art from another album, so I deleted jpg's only to have them reappear. I then took files out into "My Music" Directory but they still won't change. Help, This is one of the reasons I won't have i in front of my music devices. Why I got it? It was the only place I could get some music videos that I wanted. Other than that, It's got info that the others hadn't and gave me info that the other's couldn't or wouldn't.

Sorry New to this forum, I have Windows XP. I went to Microsoft Support to see if I could over-ride the command on the folders. I opened the CMD box typed in what they said, only when I tried to put in the path that's where I got lost, it didn't recognise my commands. Thanks for the quick reply. Hope you can help I have started to rip the albums again, only this time I have to copy paste the info and change dates. I just checked, other folders are showing faded read only as well, but info is being changed by media player except the itunes files.

  • Cant sync iphone 6 plus to itunes, can only restore backup or setup as new

I recently bought a new iphone 6 plus and set it up through itunes by restoring from the backup of my previous iphone.
Since then I have made updates on my new phone (installed some apps, updated IDs and passwords, etc), and most recently let it install the ios 8.1.1 update.
Today when I connected my phone to my PC to sync it with itunes, the only options I am given are for setting up the phone, not syncing it.
Specifically, it gives me 2 choices.  1) Set up as a new Phone, 2) Restore from this backup (the backup from when I already originally set up the new phone).
I do not want to restore the phone in either of these fashions, I only want to do a sync to a) get the updates on my phone backed up into itunes and b) install music from my itunes onto my iphone (which for some reason did not come across in the original setup).
How can I SYNC my phone without simply having to RESTORE it to the state it was some time ago ?
If I am having this problem now, it seems I would be stuck in this situation in the future too.

It's been almost 3 weeks since I posted this. Any suggestions on how to fix ?

Adding media directly to the media folder does not make it appear in the library.  iTunes doesn't really 'look' at that folder except to go to specific files when you call upon them from a library. You have to drag new content to each user's library, that is assuming each user has their own library.
