ITunes recognizes iPod -- then it vanishes

Hi folks -
My color iPod has been engaging in some idiosyncratic behavior and I cannot get it to update. The long story is this: When I went to get the new updater (1/10/06) and tried to update, I got a bad folder icon on the iPod screen -- the fonts got smaller too -- and ended up doing a full restore. The updater claims the restore was successful and that I am running the latest iPod software - 1.2.1. (I am running iTunes 6.0.2.23.)
When I plug iPod into my USB 2.0 port, it starts iTunes and looks like it's going to update. But after about 8 songs (keep in mind all of my music got wiped out when I restored) the iPod vanishes from the list on the left column of iTunes. After a few minutes, it reappears and tries again. And vanishes again. Etc. If I quit iTunes, the iPod makes it reopen and the process begins again.
When I plug the iPod into the USB 1.0 port, it appears to update fine -- but at a glacial pace. So far it has not vanished, but it's only on song 10 of more than 5,000.
Any advice?
thanks much,
Adam

  • ITunes recognizes iPod but can't sync - driver missing?

Here's the rundown. Several months ago, the complete content of the old XP machine where this iPod's library resided was migrated to a Windows 7 Home Premium system using LapLink PC Mover.  iTunes had never previously been installed on the Windows 7 unit.  iTunes appeared to be functional afterwards, but on the first and all subsequent instances of attempting to sync the iPod, clicking on the Sync button did and still does nothing.  I have tried connecting the iPod to multiple different motherboard-based and pcie-based USB ports, and to a USB2.0 external hub. (Sometimes the screen briefly flashes as though it was switching to the sync process monitor, but usually it's just no change.)  I've tried uninstalling all of the Apple software from the machine, rebooting, and reinstalling.  (When I say "all", that includes iTunes itself, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update, in that order.  Trying any other order produced complaints.  Quicktime is not installed on this machine; iTunes and the iPod are not used for video.)  In looking at the postings of others who have had similar issues, I found a recommendation to reinstall another driver that I have verified is not loading and is not running with the iPod hooked up:  Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.  I have tried to reinstall this driver, but it hasn't worked.  What I have come to suspect is that something in the Windows registry got borked during the transfer, and is causing the load process for the *needed* driver to fail, possibly by trying to load the old XP version.  But my registry-fu is not strong in this, so I'm looking to see if anyone else has run across this issue previously and found a solution.
    Points to note:
Windows 7, installation was a port from XP via LapLink PCMover
5th gen classic iPod 80Gb with 34Gb free
iTunes version 11.4.0.18 is installed  (This was the current version when I started trying to find the problem.)
Apple Mobile Device Support software is loaded.
Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is NOT loading, either before or while the iPod is connected.
In Device Manager, the iPod appears as a Disk Drive and as a Portable Device when connected, but does not appear in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers list.
iTunes recognizes the iPod and can access it sufficiently to verify that it does not need to be updated.
    iTunes can eject the iPod.
    iTunes cannot sync the iPod.

I can now expand the information somewhat.  On my second, very similar setup (5th gen Classic connected to Win 7/32 with iTunes 11.4.0.18) I was able to successfully do the initial sync of the iPod several weeks ago, but this afternoon, when I tried to sync it to include the music I had added recently, it failed in the same manner as the other system.  I really, really, really DO NOT want to downgrade to iTunes 12 with it's horrible antinavigation interface and lack of the very useful and needed Sidebar, but it is beginning to look like 11.4.0.18 is problematic, and I don't have an installer for anything else at present.

  • TS1369 Itunes recognizes ipod but 'on this ipod' tab doesn't show up.

So iTunes recognizes my iPod but the 'on this iPod' tab isn't showing up. I've restarted the computer, iPod (ipod is also updated), and iTunes but nothing seems to help. This is on a Mac book pro; iTunes version is 11.0.2 (most recent). Any ideas anyone?

You have to enter the album information manually in iTunes to get it to show up in your iPod. The only way album info shows up automatically is if you purchase the album from the iTunes store.
Click on the song in iTunes so it's highlighted in blue and hold down the Command - i keys on your Mac keyboard. This will bring up a dialogue box with tabs for Summary, Info, Video, Sorting, Options, Lyrics, and Artwork. Click on the Info tab and you'll see a group of input fields for song title, artist name, album name, etc.  After you fill in the info click OK.  (You can only enter info for one song at a time). The updated info should now show up in iTunes. Good luck!

  • Computer nor Itunes recognizes Ipod

While my Ipod was updating the usb was pulled out of the computer. My computer nor Itunes recognizes the Ipod Video (30gb) and my Ipod won't turn on either even when the hold button is off. If anyone knows how to deal with this thing. Please help (I have to go on a trip for Christmas Vacation).

    available 1.6gb
    Everything used to work fine.
My PC will no longer recognize the device.  Neither does Itunes.
I've done everything I've found online:
    - re-installed Itunes
    - re-booted device
I set up WIFI sync.  Shouldn't that at least see it?
I've seen thousands of posts about this online, but have never run across a solution.  I don't think the Apple store could do anything.  Please help.  Thank you.

Thanks very much, but I was already in the process of another solution by the time you replied.
I updated the driver. Here's how I did it.
I right clicked on the usb icon in the bottom right thingamajig (where you click to remove flash drives etc.) When you right click, it shows Open Device and Printers. Click it.
Then it opens a window. Scroll down till you see Apple Mobile Devices USB Driver. Click it.
It the opens something else. On the top of it click Hardware.
Then click Apple Mobile Devices USB Driver in the menu.
It will open a new menu. Click Change Settings.
It will open an identical menu. Click the Driver tab on top.
    Click Update Driver.
Click Search automatically for updated driver software.
It should search and install for a few moments/minutes... and you are done.

  • Windows recognizes USB device but neither it nor iTunes recognize iPod

I just got a iPod shuffle this morning and tried to install it. When I first installed the software and restarted, I plugged in the shuffle, iTunes opened, and the iPod appeared on the iTunes menu. Immediately thereafter, however, a message popped up on my screen informing that Windows had recognized new hardware, installed it, but needed to restart. I restarted. Since then I have not been able to get iTunes to recognize the iPod shuffle. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the iPod software and iTunes several times, and followed all the tutorials I could on the website. Now I am actually afraid I have messed something up by deleting the uninstall file for iTunes somehow... so I can't seem to uninstall or reinstall anymore.
Anyway, regardless, I wouldn't care about uninstalling iTunes again if it would just recognize the shuffle.
I should also add that when the iPod is plugged in, the iPod blinks with the Amber light (signifying disk mode??) and Windows still recognizes a USB device... If I go to device management it even called it an "Apple iPod Device" but I can't seem to get any other recognition of it.
    Dell Windows 2000

Did you ever get an answer?
My Shuffle is flashing Amber/Green (Disk Mode).
I tried removing then reinstalling iTunes and the iPod
updater. I start the updater then plug in the Shuffle.
Windows recognizes the Apple iPod USB Device. Then
everything freezes. The updater freezes. If I use
task manager to kill the process, I still can't eject
the USB device from Windows. If I try to shut down,
the computer hangs. I have to hard reboot the system.
This is a catch-22. How do you use the updater if the
computer doesn't really recognize the Shuffle? By the
way the same thing happens if I try to use the updater
    from my laptop.

  • ITunes recognizes iPod but not music

Since I downloaded iTunes 7.3.0.54, it recognizes my iPod but does not show any music. However, it shows that the iPod disk space is 3/4 full but it's classified as "other data." Is there any other way to get that music to appear? I'm trying to avoid doing a restore if at all possible.

I had this same problem and just got off the phone with Apple Support. She told me that I'm out of luck, I should have backed all my files up. Music, photos, whatever. gone. She explained to me its like a mini computer and these things happen. It doesn't matter what generation of ipod you have. So now I have to start from the beginning and will now archive all files. I know this is not the news you wanted to hear but maybe you can sleep tonight!

  • ITunes recognizes iPod, Desktop does not, Finder does not

My iPod does not show up on the desktop. In Finder, I have no iPod showing. I went through the Five Rs, looked at the Apple troubleshooting sheet, changed USB ports, nada. Plays fine out of the dock, in my truck, etc. I am a newbie to all things Apple from the computer side, so bear with me id I left anything out.
    Thanks.

Unless you "Enable Disk Mode" or use Manual updating, the iPod won't show up in the Finder on the desk top. Only in iTunes.

I can not go back into my old iTunes to "enable disk" on the ipod, which is the only suggestion I've seen.  How can I get my music off my ipod and into my new iTunes library without losing any data?

  • ITunes and Windows will not recognize iPod Nano 3rd Generation

I've been on this ALL day. Neither Windows or iTunes will recognize iPod. I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes.... I don't know how many times.
iPod is new. Was ok to sync music and photos last week.. but now nothing. Any ideas anybody... this is driving me nuts.
When plugging in iPod - it beeps and then right away says it is ok to disconnect and beeps again... and iPod goes on... and then charges up.
I was skeptical in buying an iPod for the kids... and now am disappointed. Please somebody... change my mind!!!!

I've been having a similar issue with my iPod. My iPod will not play songs. Basically, the song or podcast will appear on screen, but is stuck at 0:00 and will not play.
When I connected my iPod to my computer, it was not recognized by iTunes and it did not appear in My Computer. I checked the Windows Device Manager, and the device did appear there. Strangely enough, the device did appear in My Computer as a removable disk only after I closed out Device Manager. I'm wondering if I need to restore my iPod. How do I do so without iTunes?

  • Windows doesn't recognize Ipod and causes iTunes to Crash. . HELP!!

    Hi,
Recently, I plugged in my ipod (30GB Photo) to my computer (running windows XP with SP2) and it caused itunes to crash. I rebooted the machine and tried again and the same thing has happened. I've spent the past day trying to fix it. I have done the following things and nothing has worked:
    -reset my IPOD
-formated my IPOD (erased all the songs)
-uninstalled and reinstalled ITUNES & QUICKTIME
-tried to reinstall the ipod on the computer using the original cd.
-disabled startup items to check if anything has been conflicting
-tried all the usb ports on my computer and 2 different wires
I don't know what else to do! I don't think the ipod is formatted for windows anymore (is that possible?) and whenever I try plugging it in, iTunes freezes up until I unplug the ipod. As well, Explorer recognizes it as a "Removable Disk" not IPOD.
Please helpppppp! Thank you sooo much

    Hi there
You're pretty much describing a problem I had yesterday.
I've got the 2gb model and initially it was working fine. I run off a 4 port usb hub with other equipment running as well.
Everything was okay but I kept getting a balloon telling me that usb 2.0 would be faster, so I routed my extension cable directly to a usb 2.0 port on my computer and all of what you describe started.
The PC showed my nano as a removeable drive but could not be acesssed. If I managed to get it recognised in itunes (took forever) then it just said it was corrupted and was unable to restore.
After much cursing and trawling the internet for answers, I gave up and put the cable back to the hub.
    And.....everything worked again !!
I can only conclude that my hub (quite old) does not work on usb 2.0, or putting the extension cable (5m) straight into my PC causes a power drop / signal loss ??
Are you using an extension cable or a hub? something to try.
    Good luck anyway
    Regards

  • Why doesn't my itunes recognize my ipod nano 6th gen anymore?

I recently purchased a lot of new songs and downloaded the newest version of itunes.  Now when i plug my ipod (6th gen) into the USB to sync with itunes it shows that it is charging ("connected - eject before disconnecting") then it ejects itself and the whole time itunes never registers my ipod.  So frustrating!!  I've restarted my computer many times, i've uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes many times.  I've tried holding the sleep/on/off button with the volume down button to restore it then i get a message  from itunes saying that it can't restore my ipod because of an error.....  What can I do???  Please Help!!!!

Why doesn't my iTunes recognize my "Songs for Japan" CD,
iTunes gets information about all CDs from a database called Gracenote (which has nothing to do with iTunes/Apple), but if no one has entered the information about that CD into Gracenote, that's why your iTunes cannot fill in the track names. You could send that information to Gracenote yourself by completing the track names and artists and then clicking on Advanced/Submit CD track names. That would help everyone else in the future.
    However, you then go on to say;
burtontexjap wrote:Recently my computer's iTunes doesn't recognize any artists, even the ones I've uploaded before.
If your iTunes cannot get any track information for any CD, then either your iTunes isn't connected to the internet, or your iTunes setting have changed. To check your iTunes settings, go into Edit/Preferences/General and look at the tick-box (check-box) named Automatically retrieve CD track names from the internet. There should be a tick (check-mark) in the box.
