Itunes recongnizes iphone but not ipod nano 5g

Running windows xp with avast! security and the newest version of itunes.
Have tried reinstalling itunes many times, as well as the other tutorials.
The message I get is "The software required for this ipod is not installed correctly. Please re-install Itunes to install the required software"
I just re-installed following the directions to completely remove Itunes and it components, just to get the same message. My computer does recognize the ipod, even by name. When running diagnostics, it says that itunes helper is not running, and not device is connected.
My Iphone is reconized by Itunes, no problem at all.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

One way to do this is to use Smart Playlists. These playlists can be built using pretty much any criteria you want, but here's an example:
I use this Smart Playlist to keep the music on my iPhone rotating and fresh. When I plug in the iPhone to power every night is syncs with iTunes, updates the play counts then syncs the new music to the playlist.
So when you sync your iPhone sync just your Smart Playlist, not your entire library.

That is correct. If it is an iPod Classic 5th generation it doesn't connect to the Internet it can't download anything.

ITunes purchase plays in iTunes but not iPod nano

I apologize if this question has been answered and I was unable to find it in a couple of minutes of searching this site and the iTunes help.
I recently bought a 2GB iPod nano. Initially I just used it to listen to MP3s I already had, but recently I bought a song from the iTunes store. I can listen to the song using iTunes / my computer. I can put it in a playlist and sync that playlist with my nano. I can "see" the song on the nano playlist, but when the nano goes to play the song it hesitates for a moment and then goes to the next song.
I have the latest iTunes, the latest iPod software, and I have done a restore to the nano and the nano still won't play the song.
I'm guessing the fix is real obvious, and I simply can't figure it out. Can someone point me in the proper direction?

If you have made sure that both the iTunes and iPod software are current and have deauthorized and reauthorized your computer, try this test:
1. Deauthorize the computer.
2. Create a new user in the system.
3. Download the free song of the week from the iTMS in the new user account.
4. Play the song in that user account to authorize again.
5. Restore the iPod (using the iPod updater) in the new user account.
6. Sync just the free song of the week and see if it plays on the iPod.
If it does, you appear to have a corrupted iTunes library file, and you should recreate the iTunes library file in your normal user account, and then sync your music back to the iPod and all should be well.

I have find my iphone installed on both devices, location services are on, wifi is on, icloud is on and find my iphone is on within icloud in settings, but I cannot locate the ipod touch only the iphone. Any ideas??

It's possible that Find my phone is using the cellular network to locate your phone and the wifi network they are both using is unregistered.

Why has battery percentage been enabled for iPad and iPhone, but not iPod Touch?

iPhones have had the option to enable the battery percentage reading in the top right corner of the screen since they came out, and iPads later got that ability. Yet throughout their times, updates, and models, iPod Touch users never have had that option. And that tiny battery icon can be deceiving. That icon on my iPod Touch 5G looks like I have 50% left, yet I plug it in, and suddenly, its charging just with a red end, meaning 20% or less remaining. Apple... PLEASE give iPod Touches the option to torn that percentage on at the top right corner of the screen, even if it's only to the nearest 5 percent, although one app I have tells me exact battery percentage, so iPods have that capability, just please put it in the settings! I like the convenience of that reading at the top, rather than opening an app every time I need a battery reading! PLEASE Apple, it's time to let us get the percent! Also, adding a built-in FM Radio receiving antenna for on-the-go FM Radio support wouldn't be a bad idea in the next generation if iPod Touch!

It can be added but it is inaccurate. Large fluctuation in % battery will be seen with load changes.

If I go from 'Devices' to Summary and then Music, I only get one option-Sync Music,There is a box on this page but the options within it are grayed out. If I tick the Sync Music option I get this message-

iTunes will only transfer purchases back to your computer using the iTunes > File > Transfer purchases from XXX's iPhone. It will not transfer playlists or non-purchased songs.

Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data. Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!

Trying to download songs from iTunes to my 5th gen Nano. For some reason it will recognize my iPhone but not my iPod. Any ideas ?

Problem solved.

ITunes no longer recognizes my iPod nano 5th gen. When plugged into macbook usb it appears as my iPhone. Previously both devices had individual identities. Have reset iPod and turned macbook off/on.

Do the problem songs play in iTunes on the computer?
Is Settings>iTunes and App Store signed into the account that purchased them?
Can yo redownlod them directly to the iPod by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Do they show up in the Purchased list?
Do you have any Restrictions (Settings>General>Restrictions) set that would prevent syncing/loading those songs?

As you connect your ipod to iTunes, an option in the upper right of the screen will appear. When you click this, it will show the different menu for your ipod.
