ITunes recovery and repair
I posted this on the 'using iTunes" list and thought this might be a better place to ask. Sorry for the cross post.
I don't have an iPod and don't use iTunes, but as part of my prepunishment and preparation for 'ell, (you probably can't say "h'll" over here either) people have been bothering me with their computer problems for decades. I'd have two cases that an iTunes expert may be able to help me with. Both clients make Homer Simpson look like Einstein and stand no chance of fixing things themselves, no matter how much tech support they get.
1. XP laptop so riddled with garbage that it takes almost 20 minutes to boot. It's way too diseased and corrupted to use at all, or even think about fixing. Re-install time. Using a Linux boot CD, I've zipped up all the user's files including the My Documents/My Music/iTunes. Is fixing this a simple matter of re-installing iTunes and restoring the My Music/iTunes directory?
2. XP desktop. Runs fine, but My Music/iTunes is heavily corrupted by a hopelessly naive user who moved iTunes, copied it, zipped it up, unzipped it, and left so many copies of it lying around that it's hard to tell which one iTunes is actually using. Though I am sure that it's no longer the normal My Music/iTunes location. All of this was done trying to copy wmv files ripped with Windows Media Player into iTunes. After ten years, this guy can't fetch pictures off his camera without help.
Amazingly, iTunes still works fine. But he's replacing the XP machine with another, so this needs to migrate to the new machine. He also bought a Mac laptop and may want to run iTunes there instead. Because of the mess he made, copying the iTunes folder is at best, an very unattractive option.
In both cases, I'd like to preserve the music these folks bought from Apple. What's the best way to do this? Is there a way to re-fetch all the stuff you've already purchased from Apple? Any help would be appreciated.
The recovery partition is not updated by the Windows 8.1 upgrade. So it produces the same recovery media.
Upshot is that when you recover that way, it restores the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents with Windows 8.0.

Do I have to re-install R & R ? If so which version should I install.

Are these purchases not in your iTunes library? Content such as music, movies, apps, etc. are not included in the backup of your iPod. These all need to be transferred to your iTunes library seperately by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases with your iPod Touch still connected.

Did PC Recovery and Dowloaded iTunes, wont open, only get error reports.
I just did a PC recovery and have all of my music from iTunes backed up on a dock drive. I just re-downloaded iTunes and installed it. iTunes won't open, I just get an error report every time. I clicked on the setup file and tried to repair it. I've uninstalled it and redownloaded it. Still the same result. Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could do?

My 7 year old has a passcode on her iPod touch. She forgot it, after multiple attempts at what it could have been, it comes up with disabled etc.....I have tried it in recovery and hooking it up to iTunes (which the device has been previously synced up to) to restore. But the problem I am having is it only gives me the option to update also, to iOS 6.1.3 with the new bug fix which it won't allow you to bypass the passcode. It gets a little into the downloading, turns the iPod on and then asks for the passcode to continue?! I am at a loss as to what to do now, as every forum says put it in recovery and restore. I can't use the 'find my iPhone' app as the iPod is offline. I've tried it on a laptop not prev synced up to and get the same problem. Has any one got any ideas!
Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.

Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.

I uploaded newest version and phone is stuck on a screen telling me to plug phone into computer and go to iTunes, when I do this, iTunes says my phone is in recovery and I need to restore, Can anyone please help me get my phone back without losing anything?
You shouldn't have to restore your phone to keep your data. But first press home and on button at the same time until phone shows up Apple logo an boots up normally. When the phone comes back on plug into ituens and back it up by selecting "Back Up Now". Once backed up, you can press update and install 7.1.1 and it will restore and recover all your previously backed up data. You can also press "update" and itunes will automtically back up the phoen and install 7.1.1.

ipod touch 4g wont connect to itunes or come out of recovery mode, its just stuck on the connect to itunes screen and will not come out, i tried doing a restore but something happened and now it wont finish or do anything else please help and my itunes will not see that its connected. i also tried going though control panel and restarting the service and nothing happens. also i tried redoing the driver but its saying it cannot find any drivers for it

I see the "Connect to iTunes" screen and the device appears in iTunes. Every time I connect to iTunes, iTunes says my device is in recovery mode and has to be recovered so I do so. The same recovery message shows in iTunes after iTunes is complete. I have a iPod touch 64gb. I have no idea what OS is on it now that iTunes has tried to recover it and erased all info.

After updating my Iphone 4s to os 7.1.1 from 7.1 over the air, my phone went into recovery mode. Yet when I try to restore it with Itunes on my windows 7 laptop it says the network connection has been reset. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network is active, or try again later. My phone has the itunes logo and charger symbol on it, as well as an arrow pointing at the Itunes logo. After holding the sleep button down or even doing the hard reset the same screen comes up on my phone regardless of whether it is plugged in or not to my computer. I have turned my computer off and on again. It is plugged in and charging as it's battery life is very short. I also reset my modem and the same error message pops up. The only option on my computer when my phone is plugged in is to restore it. My firewall also allows Itunes through it. I have literally tried everything I know being someone who knows very little about technology. I also do not want to hear about how the update worked for other people. My phone has been in recovery mode for 5 hours at least now so it will just make me more frustrated if a bunch of people post about how the update worked for them.
Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything... and you must continue with the Recovery...

I have had to update my iphone 4 in itunes and it has now come up with a message, itunes has found a iphone in recovery and needs to restore it.
I dont want to do this as I cannot loose all my pics on my phone!

Please help!!Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start, try this a few times if necessary. If still problem, you may have to just Restore your iPhone to get it working. In the future sync your iPhone with iTunes routinely and when it contains important data, iCloud when set correctly will do this for you continuously.

Please stop altering the fonts, it makes reading postings extremely difficult. If help is desired, making postings difficult to read is not the way to get help.

How to repair itunes library (damaged) file. Multiple iTunes libraries on an external harddrive. All libraries have been working fine. Do some "housecleaning" on a one of the large libraries 296GB. iTunes quits and now has damaged file. 296 GB still on HD.
The duplication is unnecessary. Exporting creates a duplicate of the file. So now you'll have a duplicate of a duplicate. Exporting is not "working on" a file.
No it's not merging, it's exporting from one to the Finder and into another. No matter what lose something. If you export the Original you leave behind all the work you've done in iPhoto. If you export anything else, you lose the non-destructive editing and the ability to revert to the original. With merging you preserve that work. Yes, you can trash the old Library when you have completed the manoevre but no it's not the same thing as merging.

has details of the options in the Export dialogue. But in brief:
Current gets you the iPhoto Preview, used for sharing via media browsers. It's a jpg, medium quality missing metadata. Original gets the file you imported, unchanged and then you can export different version of the current version at different qualities. If you choose to export anything except the Original you do not get a Raw. There's no such thing as an "edited Raw", and you lose the connection between the original and the exported version. That means you've taken a non-destructive workflow and turned it into a destructive one.
The Tiff will certainly be higher qulaity and less likely to suffer generational loss in future editing but the file sizes are vast, often more than 10 times the size of the jpeg.
Put it this way, it would be cheaper to buy Library Manager than the disk you'll need to contain all the Tiffs. Unless you plan on a lot of editing, I'd go for a high quality jpeg as a reasonable compromise.

So, I guess my new question is, how can I edit the Raw image and keep it in a RAW format that IPhoto recognizes so that I can reprocess without any loss at a future time, or is it that once you edit a RAW image, then it is no longer a RAW image?
Once you edit a Raw it can no longer be a Raw. End of. -
Tried running disk repair from HD recovery, not repairable. Trying to reinstall OSx Lion, says disc is locked. Do I have to erase the drive and lose everything? I also have Bootcamp installed, will boot to Windows no problem.

try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command. -
I updated my ipod touch 5th gen to iOS 8.2 and left it but when I got back it was in recovery mode with a red iTunes logo and I plugged it into my computer to reset my ipod and it wouldn't do it what do I do?
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I have a Sonos system with an ipod dock and was experiencing problems when using my ipod. The people at Sonos suggested resetting my ipod, so I did. Now, unfortunatey, my ipod isn't working properly. When I connected it to my itunes it said that it was in recovery mode and should be restored. I restored it and a message said it would appear in my itunes. But it just keeps saying that it needs to be restored. I've tried removing my itunes software and reloading it again but nothing changed.
Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
