ITunes refuses to acknowledge ipod

I have a 3rd Gen iPod and have been relatively happy with it, until today, when I connected it to its USB cable and iTunes told me that Gremlin had been corrupted & I should re-connect him; no big deal. I did, then re-connected him as I usually do. Unfortunately, iTunes now refuses to admit Gremlin is there. Gremlin says he is syncing, my desktop has his icon, but no pod when I look at the Devices menu. I have
1)restarted pod. Icon re-appears on desktop, Gremlin believes he is syncing, iTunes is still not caring.
2)changed USB cable from hub to laptop directly. No change.
3)I have tried connecting him with one of the other pods USB cables: no dice.
4)changed the port in the USB hub. Nope.
I am running the latest version of iTunes already, and can't really restore him since iTunes won't recognize him. This is worse than the time Gremlin believed he was in Cardiff, no matter what his clock settings said; especially since I use him to run all my podcasts.

Hello Sara,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you have tried most of the suggestions in this article, but it wouldn't hurt to check the rest of them.

Otherwise, several users who have experienced this same issue were able to reformat their iPod via *Disk Utility* and doing so helped iTunes recognize the iPod after the reformat was complete. For instructions on how to do this, see this article of mine.

  • Itunes refuses to let ipod sync, says "Mobile Device Service is not started

So for some reason my iTunes refuses to sync. Itunes announces it that there is something wrong with syncing, something about "bonjour being disabled" and then it asks if I would like itunes to fix the problem. I hit yes. Itunes then "fixes" the problem, by ignoring that there is an ipod connected to the computer, and refuses to acknowledge the ipod's existence even if I run a diagnostic. I tried downloading bonjour for windows, thinking that might solve the issue, but no such luck, it tells me i already have bonjour for windows on my computer--god knows where it thinks bonjour is, since running find turns up nothing.
Anyone have a clue how to smack itunes upside the head and get it to start syncing again?

Restart the AMDS! Read about it here.

  • ITunes refuses to recognize iPod

    Hi all,
I had upgraded to the latest version of iTunes (7.1), but after a few weeks, it stopped loading completely. Instead, it began freezing 3/4 way through updating the library.
I wasn't able to work my way around it, so I uninstalled ver. 7 and re-installed ver 6. Since then, iTunes opens perfectly (a relief).
Problem: iTunes refuses to recognize my iPod now, saying:
"The iPod cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 7.0 or later."
Obviously, I was having trouble with 7.1 so that's not an option I'd like to explore. Suggestions would be appreciated.

    30G Video iPod   Windows XP

I am having the exact same problem, if it is of any comfort. I have an 80GB Classic and a 512MB Shuffle (gumstick variety) and just this evening, when I plug either of them into the USB port, my Mac (G5) recognizes the iPod for a brief moment but then, a message appears saying that (I paraphrase) "an iPod has been plugged in but it cannot be identified properly. Please disconnect and try again." I do try again, and again, but nothing changes. The iPod's icon appears briefly on the desktop, as it should, but quickly vanishes as the error message pops up.
I tried resetting my larger iPod, per Apple's instructions, but that has not helped. I have restarted the computer twice, and no luck. I have just updated iTunes to the latest version; nothing.
The larger of these iPods did connect just fine, it turns out, to an iMac in the other room.
I actually had this larger iPod connected to my computer just this morning, updating its contents with some new podcasts. Ever since, and even now, it plays music and looks fine; it just won't connect.

i have a 3rd generation ipod and my girlfriend has a 2G nano, both of which stopped being recognized by itunes immediately after i installed itunes 7.0.2 (shocking). After some research and playing around i did find a workaround. Plug your ipod in and wait for "Do Not Disconnect". Right click on My Computer and select manage. On the left hand side towards the bottom select Disk Management. Next you should see the name of your ipod in the middle section, right click on it and select Change Drive Letter and Path. Next Click the Add button and choose a drive letter not being used by your computer (Q usually is available) and press OK. Close the Computer Management window and open itunes, you should see you ipod and should be able to update it.
As far as I can tell, you have to do this each time you plug you ipod in, but it does work.

  • ITunes REFUSES to recognize my iPod

I should probably start this post off by saying that I had NO issues whatsoever until my mother reformatted our computer last month. It's not an issue for her, because she can easily update her iPod at her office.
I have a second generation iPod that I love love love, my only issue is that now iTunes won't recognize my iPod. I'm not able to update anything. It shows up just fine in Windows, but that doesn't help me. Windows wont update my iPod for me.
I've done the 5R's more times than I can count, and iTunes will usually recognize my iPod by the fifth attempt. The catch is that, whenever iTunes finally accepts the iPod, it won't update. It will say it's updating and then I'll get an error message saying it wasn't able to connect.
My mother thinks our hard drive might be dying, does that have anything to do with it? I'm tearing my hair out over here and I know it's a terrible question to ask on the Apple board, but are there any other options I have to update my iPod with?
I'm going crazy here without being able to listen to it.

  • New iPad REFUSES to acknowledge valid Apple ID?

I have a "fresh from the factory, just out of the box" iPad 2.  I was trying to run the setup, and when it got to the part to sign in using my EXISTING Apple ID, the iPad refuses to acknowledge the VALID Apple ID.  Ironically, I have to use this selfsame Apple ID in order to post this question.  AND, I use this Apple ID in order to use my iPod.  What is the fix for this?

    Hi,
I've come here looking for answers to exactly the same question, although using a brand new ipad3.
I'm unable to log into itunes or app store using my apple id which I created earlier this evening, although I can log onto the apple website to maintain my id and also to get onto this forum.
I've just emailed support for an answer, hopefully they will give stops to resolve the issue, or someone in the know will already know the answer on here.

  • ITunes Refuse to recognise CD

iTunes just refuses to acknowledge that a CD is present so that I can import the trackes. It briefly shows the progress bar contacting the cddb site then this disappears and the no listing of the CD appears. Also if I run the Help+Run CD Diagnostics it is able to read the CD without any problem so it's not a hardware issue.
Another issue which may be related is the Help+Check for iTunes Updates option refuses to work - message "The iTunes Update Server could not be contacted" appears. I originally installed iTunes 5 that came on the disc with the Nano. I've upgraded this to iTunes 6, which I've uninstalled and re-installed twice. I've not re-installed iTunes 5 again from the CD. I've turned off the Windows XP firewall - I've got a Netgear Wireless Router with build in firewall, and that works fine - I've got another laptop using iTunes with another iPod and that works fine with the Netgear and Windows firewall on.
Has anyone else had the same sort of problem - i've tried everything I can think of and it just doesn't work!

Hope you don't mind me muscling in on this topic but I'm having no joy with my query - which is that i-tunes doesn't access gracenote to get CD information. I ave put in a CD previously imported and the track listing comes up put in an un-imported one and just get track1, etc.Have run CD diagnostics and got the following

  • "cannot read or write to disk" when transferring itunes TV shows to iPod

I have downloaded two TV shows from iTunes, but cannot get them transferred to my iPod. When I click "Update iPod," with one of the shows selected, it will begin to download to the iPod and get ALMOST to the point of finishing, and then I will get an error message stating that the iPod can't be read or written to. At first I thought I just had a corrupted video file (although it plays fine on my computer), so I downloaded a second TV show. Same thing. I have downloaded some music vidoes from iTunes, and they transfer perfectly to my iPod. I've noticed that since I downloaded the latest iPod updater and version of iTunes, that I've had the same problem getting a few songs to transfer to my iPod from CDs as well, with the can't read or write error. This only happens to maybe one song out of thirty, but it is still annoying. Maybe it is the updater??
If anyone out there can help me, I would really appreciate it since I'm dying to watch these shows on my iPod! Thanks in advance!!
      Windows XP

I did the 5 R's last night, and now my iPod won't update any songs. The iPod is showing up in iTunes, but the "Update iPod" option is grayed out. Also, before when I had installed my iPod, it appeared in iTunes with my name...now it just says IPOD. I assume that's because it's back to the factory settings, but thought it was odd. (Yes, I know how to rename it.)
Actually, after I ran the iPod updater to completely restore my iPod, it sat there frozen for hours with "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen, NOT flashing. Even after I disconnected the iPod (I had to turn off the computer completely to do this; otherwise, the USB port refused to stop running), the message just sat there. I had to reset it to get it to the point where I could select my language.
Any suggestions? I'm considering just wiping out everything (backing up my files, natch) and starting over with the CD that came with the iPod in the first place.

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod...I've tried everything!!!  HELP!!!

    Hi there folks...
I am about to lose my freakin' mind. I have tried almost everything with no luck. I have a 4th gen 40gb.
My iTunes refuses to recognize my iPod. I THINK my Windows is seeing it, as when I go into My Computer, I see E: Removable Disc," which I believe is my iPod. However, when I try to right click on it, "My Computer" goes to "not responding," and I have to ctrlaltdelete to get rid of it. I have tried most of the solutions offered on this board, short of reinstalling iTunes (I'd rather not have to lose all the labeling, playlists, etc I've done).
I've tried the 5 R's, I've done the thing where you go to "processes" and end ipodservices.exe etc. I've tried the "quick fix" offered on the page of possible solutions. I can't restore it because when I try to run the updater, it just gets stuck on "initializing", and every once in a while it will say something about "internal manager error." Is there any other way to restore it?
At times, when the iPod is plugged in, I will get the "autoplay" thing with the flashlight running for a few minutes, but then nothing happens after it's done. Because the iPod displays "Do Not Disconnect" when it's in the dock, I have to shut my computer down completely in order to take it off the dock.
During this whole process, my iPod has given me stuff like the support link flashing, the folder with the "!", my library has seemingly disappeared several times but always comes back....
The strangest thing is, I brought it into work to try on my work computer, and I have ALL the exact same symptoms as on my home computer. I'm not sure what that tells us...
What in the world is going on? It's making me crazy!!!
    Please help!!
Dell Inspiron 8500   Windows XP   4th Gen 40gb clickwheel

I have ALL the exact same symptoms as on my home computer.
It sure sounds to me like something on the iPod is broken. If it's under warranty then I would send it back for repair. If not, check out some of the web repair services, such as iPodResQ etc.

  • ITunes thinks my new iPod is my old one

Brand new iPod vid. Xmas present. Very happy.
Installed software, plugged into iMac, songs update onto the iPod flawlessly UNTIL a message informs me some songs have not been updated, because my iPod software is out of date... please visit apple.com/ipod etc etc.
What the ****? How is it out of date. It's brand new. What's more: the newly installed iPod updater can't see any ipod, even though its mounted on the desktop. AND: in iTunes, under the iPod options, there are no options for videos or photos, and lo-and-behold, there are no photos or videos on my ipod.
Up until yesterday I used my 3rd Gen 20gb ipod. Does my iMac think I still am using that old one? Is that why it wont stick my photos/vids onto my new one? And how can I update my iPod software if the updater wont see it?
Rebooted, repaired permissions, reset ipod, shutdown itunes and restarted it, nothing works. Do i need to delete some file that is perhaps telling itunes that the ipod is a 3rd gen? Somebody help i want to watch videos on it!!!
I have run software update. Nothing to update from software update. I've just plugged it into a PC, it works flawlessly, iTunes displays all the correct options for videos and pictures and also iPod Updater works too, I restored the iPod and then returned to my iMac hoping for a change.... Nada. Still no video/photo options in iTunes, updater shouts at me to plug in an iPod. What the **** is going on. I even tried dragging my iTunes to the Trash and reinstalling. No change.
I'm pretty sure I'm not missing any iPod updater. I've installed it from the iPod cd, run software update, and manually downloaded the latest version (11-17 right?). And it still won't see my ipod. And itunes still thinks my ipod is out of date (cos im pretty sure it thinks its my old ipod!!!).
Believe it or not I'm right to some extent. Check this out. When you plug an iPod in and go to the iPod options in iTunes, in the top right hand corner of the window it informs you in pale grey text what version of software is on your current iPod. Mine says 6.0.
    6.0!!!!!!!!!!!
Version 6.0 of a 5th gen VIDEO iPod. I think not you scumbag computer.
My 3rd gen was I believe on software version 2.3, so i have no idea why it says 6.0, but i know that my 5th gen definitely shouldnt be on 6.0. But perhaps itunes does in fact believe that this is my old ipod and is therefore refusing to put videos and pictures on it. How the **** do i convince it otherwise?
This is fairly crap from Apple i must say. I cant be the only person in the world to plug in a 5th gen after using a 3rd gen so why all the hassle? Its ridiculous and my ENTIRE christmas is ruined......
    Seriously tho, somebody help me

I have had the same problem. I followed the directions I see here to delete ipod.plist file in preferences and then reconnect ipod. I did this and I still can't get the video preference to show up. Is there something else I need to do? When I try to do the ipod update it still says that my ipod has an old os on it which is the os that is on my 3rd generation ipod. I really am very frustrated. I did everything that you did and feel like you do. I just still can't get it to show video preference. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm losing my mind!!! Thanks!

  • ITunes Refuses To Copy Songs Without Syncing

Besides being the most annoying music device I've owned, the iTunes works perfectly for it. iTrash refuses to copy songs to my iPuke unless I sync them and in doing so it wants to copy all 12GB's of music to an 8GB device. Who came up with this connection system? There's a worm in my apple.

If the capacity of your iPod is smaller than the size of your library your library you have a couple of options.
    1) Manage your iPod manually and drag whatever content you wan to it from iTunes:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer, once you are connected you can change your settings: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
    2) Use the option "Sync Music - Selected Playlists. Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 7400MB for a 8G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod.
