ITunes refuses to start up

After a few uses, my iTunes refuses to open, giving the standard Windows XP message saying "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling from both the CD and from the website and both have proven ineffective. If anyone can help me out, I would be most grateful.

The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevents it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.

  • ITunes refuses to start. Can´t find iTunes folder!?!?!!

I recently tried to move all my iTunes media content to an external HDD.
Now i can´t get iTunes to boot up! It gives me this error msg.: The "iTunes folder" an not be found or created, and is essential. The default location is in the music folder. (written in Danish) I tried to move the folder back. But that didn´t help. I tried moving the library file somewhere else (to see if iTunes would start from fresh) This didn´t help either!
I have even tried to uninstall iTunes then reboot then redownload and install then reboot. STILL nothing!
    Please help!
    Bo Holbo Rasmussen

The video is detected just fine and the driver gives no errors.  It does check all connections and - as you note - indicated some are not connected, but then it does connect on DVI-0.
The end shows that it exited normally.  Something is wrong with your xinitrc and/or lxde is not starting.  The latter should give an error, so I suspect the former is the issue.
When you say you executed "#startx" does that mean you did it as root?  If so that is both a bad idea in general, and a reason why this specific case fails.  Your xinitrc is not read, instead X looks for /root/.xinitrc and if it doesn't find it uses the systemwide xinitrc.

  • ITunes refuses to start - but process is running (can take up to 5 mins to start!)

When i click to load itunes (10.5.1), the process starts up, but no application loads in task manager. Sometimes i get a small dialog box popping up showing 'Checking iTunes Library', and then nothing for a good 5-10 minutes. Finally iTunes loads, and once it has done that, the program operates as normal.
I've tried rolling back to 10.4.2 and the problem still persists.
This error occurred out of the blue on my new desktop machine, but i had been using itunes without issue for over 2 weeks on it.
I've done a complete windows reinstall of the machine, and then reinstalled itunes, and the problem still persists.
Even before importing my library, the program is slow to load, so its not a library size issue.
I'm on windows 7 professional 64bit SP1, fully updated. Processor is an i7-2700k, with dual ati 5850 cards, running on the latest 11.11 drivers.
Itunes is installed on a 120GB vertex 3 SSD. The library is on a secondary mechanical local hard disk.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

  • ITunes refuses to start- Help!

When I launch iTunes 8, a dialogue box comes up saying that : Error code-600. What has happened and how can I fix it?

Also...do you have your library on an external drive? If so, is the external connected when you're attempting to launch iTunes?

  • Itunes refuses to let ipod sync, says "Mobile Device Service is not started

So for some reason my iTunes refuses to sync. Itunes announces it that there is something wrong with syncing, something about "bonjour being disabled" and then it asks if I would like itunes to fix the problem. I hit yes. Itunes then "fixes" the problem, by ignoring that there is an ipod connected to the computer, and refuses to acknowledge the ipod's existence even if I run a diagnostic. I tried downloading bonjour for windows, thinking that might solve the issue, but no such luck, it tells me i already have bonjour for windows on my computer--god knows where it thinks bonjour is, since running find turns up nothing.
Anyone have a clue how to smack itunes upside the head and get it to start syncing again?

  • Installed the latest update and now Finder refuses to start/crashes

    Hey guys,
I just installed the latest 10.4.11 update or whatever, along with Quicktime, iTunes, etc., and now when I log in to any account, Finder refuses to start. If it does start, it crashes.
I've googled around and all I could find was that I should switch from one Admin account to another to stop it, but that looked outdated and didn't work anyway.
I'm on a PowerBook G4, 10.4.11. Hopefully someone can tell me how to fix this soon.

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Actually, I take double posting to mean you started the same Topic in two different placesat once!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc...

  • ITunes refuses to open... and I've tried everything.

Until tonight, iTunes had been functioning normally... and now it simply will not open, no matter what I do.
I've spent the past two hours going through every possible solution on both of the following pages:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
...and it has had absolutely no effect. Trying to open iTunes produces nothing more than a momentary hourglass. The process opens in the task manager, but nothing else happens. Is there something somewhere that I may have missed that may still be corrupted? I've honestly deleted absolutely everything Apple off my computer, including all application data from all users and disabled all other services and start-up processes and installed from a clean reboot, and it still refuses to work.

Just to be clear where you are, when you try to start iTunes, do you see the hour glass briefly, then nothing.
If you open the task manager after attempting to open iTunes, can you see iTunes.exe running on the processes tab?
Which service pack are you on for XP and did you make any changes to your system before the problem started.
Which version of iTunes are you on and did the problem start after an upgrade or out of the blue?
Anyway assuming you have silent launch failure with persistent iTunes in the task manager, the problem is most commonly due to a problem with cryptographic services.
If it occurred out of the blue with no prior changes to your system, you need to do a full scan for malware with up to date definitions. Malware can interfere with cryptographic services and prevent a solution.
So ... before starting troubleshooting, you need to be certain your system is clean. You can get a second opinion from the Kaspersky free scan - it is good at finding things but doesn't remove them.
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Also a quick thing to check is your smart card service, which iTunes needs to start.
    To check, go to:
    Start>>Run>>Services.msc.
Look for the smart card service, check that is present and not set to disabled. Mine is set to manual.
I will give you the rest of it after you have checked for malware.

  • ITunes refuses to 'see' external drive

All my tunes are on an external LaCie 120GB mobile HDD as they have been for a couple of years and all has worked well. Now for some reason iTunes refuses to 'see' the iTunes Folder on this drive it doesn't even seem to see the drive at all. The drive is fine as I can double click a tune from it from the finder and it plays it in iTunes ok.
iTunes also recognises an interacts properly with my wife's iPod.
I have checked and rechecked that the iTunes/Prefs/advanced/iTunes music folder location is set to the HDD folder.
Is this a problem with the latest iTunes version?

I have stopped, started, uninstalled, reinstalled, used msconfig to stop all other processes, changed drive letter, shut down, reboot, restart with IPot connected, restart with IPot disconnected... nothing on the Apple page has been of any help. Could it be something to do with low power USB v/s high power USB? All thought I don't buy that either. My wife has an IBM T42 and it works no problems, mine IBM T43, does not work. Other USB devises do work on my T43??? Hense the point of this thread.

  • ITunes refuses to launch

I just updated to the newest version of iTunes, and upon restarting, iTunes refuses to launch. I tried launching from applications, restarting, reinstalling, and deleting my library settings file for iTunes, but nothing has worked. No other programs are running.
When I try to start iTunes, the icon bounces for less than a second, and then stops, and the application never starts.
    I'm at a loss, any idea's?

    See this.
    Fixed mine.
It seems that the enhancer wont allow the licence agreement pop up to show for the new update.
When disabled you can agree to the licence then re-enable the enhancer the re-start and everything should then be back to normal.

If i factory reset my iPhone will it relock to O2?
I've had my iPhone 3G for a couple of years and when out of contract i asked O2 to unlock it, which they did. I've used a Three sim card and it works okay. I've now decided to sell it but before I send it to the buyer i want to factory reset the phone. Will it remain available to use on any network once i've reset it, because i've advertised it as an unlocked phone?
If it was officially unlocked by O2 it will remain unlocked if reset or updated.
Also, just as a side note if you can help. Its running iOS 3.1.3. Once factory reset and connected to iTunes will it force an iOS 4 update or can you choose not to update the OS?
If you restore it in iTunes it will be updated to the current release, 4.3.1. There are ways around this; Google is your friend.

  • Itunes won't start unless a cd is in the cd tray.

    Hi all,
I have moved last week from WinXP to Windows 7 and since then iTunes (the last version, 9.0.1) refuses to start, unless I have a cd (data or music doesn't matter) in the cd tray. The error that I get says:
"Quick Time not found. Quick time is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes , then install iTunes again"
Of course Quick Time is installed (combo package with iTunes).
Anybody has an idea about what's happening??
    Thanks in advance for help.

Thanks Harv55, but I have already done this twice and nothing happened...
I have even installed separately Quicktime but this didn't help either.

  • ITunes doesn't start (different from others...)

I upgraded to iTunes 6 (from 5.0.1) a while back. It worked fine for a while, then one day, it refused to start. Looking in Task Manager showed that it would start for about 2-3 seconds and then die. Installing a fresh copy would get as far as the license agreement, and then exhibit the same behavior after accepting it.
This is where the story got interesting. I opened up iTunes on my other hard drive (which I had once used as my main drive and still had an installed copy of iTunes). It worked perfectly! Turns out it was version 4.7.
So today, my sister got an iPod nano. We knew that iTunes might not work, so we uninstalled version 6 and installed the copy from the CD. Same deal. I uninstalled that and installed iTunes 5. Same deal.
From what I've gathered from a few other threads, I can provide the following information:
    - QuickTime starts fine.
    - No Norton Internet Security 2005 installed.
    - Spyware and virus scans turn up clean.
So I'm out of ideas. This is the strangest software problem I've ever encountered.

As for security software, I have ewido (as suggested elsewhere on this forum) and ZoneAlarm.
hmmmm. Katrina is better versed on ZoneAlarm/iTunes conflicts than i am. but we'd probably better check on it.
probably best to disconnect from the internet before trying an experiment.
reboot the PC. disable both ZoneAlarm's firewall and antivirus. Launch your Task Manager to the processes tab. now try another itunes launch.
do you either get (a) an itunes launch, or (b) a changed behavior by itunes.exe in Task Manager when you try to launch itunes under those conditions? (longer persistence in Task Manager, for example)
    love, b

  • Itunes would not start after os update

I loaded new os and now itunes won't start.ERROR APSDaemon.exe What now?

If you downgrade, uninstall Apple compatibility support also from Programs as that seems to be the crux of many issues, both with iTunes but also Safari.
The other "crux" is that QT 7.7 and Safari 5.1 are security patches/updates deemed "critical/essential" category. Safari you can probably do w/o. iTunes is "dot zero" (10.4.0).
iTunes: I am always doing this that bring UAC to blank the screen, and refuse to disable that security feature, but that also means iTunes video (music, movies etc) will also go blank.
Other feature I have had with itunes is that it will go into a process thread lock wait state between video/movie and require a kill thread.
In 5 yrs Vista/7 I've had more issues with Apple software than anything else bare none.
Trouble installing Apple iTunes or QT Windows
