ITunes refusing to play anything

Just purchased a new iMac and went through the Apple setup procedure to link old mac with new in order to transfer data via firewire cable.
Now find that when I click on any track in iTunes nothing happens, just sits there. Can't even listen to track reviews in the iTunes store.
Has this something to do with authorisation? I don't remember getting asked anything about this during the data transfer and I don't have a clue as to what to do next?
Suggestions please.

Well now it's suddenly working! Have no explanation as to how or why!

  • My itunes does not play anything anymore

Itunes won't play anything anymore, wether it is in the cloud, from the store or even from my computer. It shows the song in the window but no sound and the timer does not move from 0:00

    Hello KarolineSG,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It seems like iTunes on your Mac is not playing songs at all, and the play counter is stuck at 0:00.
You can find some troubleshooting tips for this situation in the following article:

  • Just downloaded latest OS 10.4.6   iTunes refuses to play-

Can't get my computer to produce any sound at all!!!! after 10.4.6 install.
    help !!

Sound comes out through speakers alright . iTunes will play videos with sound normally, but refuses to play mp3's aac's or stuff from music store.
pressing the play button is non responsive. I can't find anything amiss in the preferences. iTunes also seems to burn discs ok as well, just no PLAY.

  • ITunes refuses to play certain songs?

I've had some songs in my iTunes library for quite some time but all of a sudden, several tracks (usually in the same album) refuses to play.
When I delete those tracks from the library and try to re-add them, iTunes refuses to add those tracks but the tracks themselves remain playable by other programs (I tried with Windows Media Player).
Does anyone know anything about this?

    Hello.
I am having a similar problem. It's not exactly the same but maybe you can help me either way. I've looked through the forum & this is about as close as I could get.
Okay, I recently purchased a 2nd gen. 16G iPod Touch as an upgrade from my 1st gen. 8G iPod Touch. When I synced it I noticed that certain songs won't play sound on my iPod. They look as if they're playing but no sound comes out. These songs are all authorized on my computer & play fine on my computer. Just not my iPod. These certain songs also played fine on my 1st gen. iPod Touch.
I have tried deauthorizing & reauthorizing and syncing my iPod numerous times. Still nothing. I then completely restored my BRAND NEW iPod and tried re syncing it and it still won't play those songs. I'm not sure if I should try the MP3 Tag Validator as I am not having an issue with the songs playing in iTunes. Plus, I just recently was infected with a rogue software virus and am wary of downloading freeware.
Any other suggestions? I would greatly appreciate it. (:

  • ITunes refuses to play shared .ogg files

I have the xiph codec thing installed for playing ogg files. Ogg files play fine if the files are stored locally on the mac. However, if I try to play the same files when they are stored on another computer on the network, it refuses to play them. Why?
Nearly all my music files are ogg vorbis. I have only one imac running OS X 10.4.
All my other computers are linux based and share their music through Rhythmbox's DAAP music sharing function.
itunes has no problem playing regular mp3 files from shared sources. Only has a problem playing shared ogg files.

I have ogg files stored locally (on a PC) and iTunes won't play them, no idea why.

  • ITunes no longer plays anything

i have the new verion of iTunes and it was working fine for a while but now when i push play it acts like it is going to play something but then nothing happens. i can push forward and back and it will change songs but still doesn't play. radio won't play either and neither will the song clips in the store. i uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing. help?

Ok, then let's capture your system configuration information and send it to the Apple engineers.
Windows Start menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run. Type in "dxdiag", click OK. In the lower right hand corner of the dialog that comes up, there is a button called "Save All Information...". Click that and save it. It's a text file, so you can open it and make sure it's not sending any personal information.
You need to send that file to our buddy Roy, <[email protected]>. Make sure that you include:
    (1) the dxdiag file.
    (2) the link to this thread.
    (3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes won't play audio".
    (4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
    (5) what was the previous version of iTunes that you updated to 7.5 from.
Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.

  • ITunes Won't Play Anything

iTunes (6.0.4.2) was working fine last week but this morning it won't play ANY files or even the sample tracks from albums streamed from the iTunes Music Store.
iTunes Update works fine for searching/downloading podcasts.
But, when I select any item in my Library, a downloaded podcast, or a iTMS sample track, and click on the play button (the right-pointing triangle) nothing plays. The button flickers momentarily but instead of the stop/pause button (vertical lines) button appearing, the play button is still showing. The name and duration information shows in the progress window at the top of iTunes but it too does not show that the item is playing. Last but not least, no sound comes out of my computer.
The only thing I can think of that changed from last week is that the Microsoft installer updated six items this morning. One of them included an update for Windows Media Player.
I've re-booted several times and all my other software seems to work fine.
    Only iTunes isn't working.
I have uninstalled/downloaded/installed iTunes from Apple's website but the symptoms do not change.
What can I do to troubleshoot/fix this so I can listen to my podcasts!?!
Thank you in advance for your help.

IBM ThinkPad T42   Windows XP Pro   SP 2 with most recent updates; 1.5 GB RAM

I uninstalled/installed QuickTime as you suggested and there were no error messages on either. To verify that the installation completed successfully, I played a movie trailer from Apple's website. The audio was fine but there was no sound. And, of course, there was no sound in iTunes.
Then I realized that the Windows startup/shutdown sounds weren't playing either so my problem is system-wide, not just a iTunes or QT problem.
I looked at Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices Properties and saw that no devices are listed in the "Sound Playback" device list. So, I guess that for some reason, WinXP isn't recognizing the sound capabilities built into the motherboard of my ThinkPad. I looked at the Device Manager and the Event Viewer and can't see anything obviously wrong.
I'm now in the process of downloading driver updates from IBM's ThinkPad support website.
For now, at least, I'm stuck with a dumb laptop...literally!
Any suggestions/links for how to troubleshoot/fix my sound problem would be most appreciated.
    Thank you very much.

  • ITunes Refusing To Play on Samsung PN58C8000 due to HDCP

I have a new Samsung PN58C8000 TV hooked up to my MacBook Pro via an HDMI cable. I try to play a HD movie I purchased in iTunes, and it refuses, complaining that my display is not HDCP compliant.
According to Samsung, my TV is in fact HDCP complaint:
Please advise, as it is very frustrating to not be able to play content that I purchased specifically to watch on my HD TV.

I'm having the same problem on my Toshiba HDTV. I've played several HD movies from iTunes using the same computer, TV and HDMI cable for months. But last night, I suddenly could not play a HD movie through my TV. (Played fine on the laptop.) The computer-to-TV connection seems fine. I can view my desktop on the TV, and the TV recognizes that it's receiving a 1080p HD signal from the computer.
I can only assume that one of the bazillion iTunes updates is to blame. What can I do about this? Please help.

  • Error message  - and iTunes will not play anything at all

After scouring forums for similar issues, I have tried a complete uninstall and reinstall of iTunes with MacAfee firewall disabled. Nada. iTunes starts with an error message saying 'Configuration error, audio and video files may not play back correctly' (or similar). Library comes up and I can see my recent purchases, but nothing will play. Frustrating to say the least.
I am Windows 7, I have McAfee and Malwarebytes running.
What else can I try? This is extra infuriating as I have just purchased five albums of new music.

    Try the white-screen topic of:

An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store may be in order.

  • Quicktime and iTunes won't play anything, require computer restart.

Since installing Lion and the latest iTunes, I cannot consistently play songs or videos in iTunes (or Quicktime, for that matter). I hit the play button and it changes to a pause button, but the file doesn't progress past 0:00. I try pausing and restarting the song (or movie) and it doesn't play. This occurs both with songs on my computer and in previews from the iTunes Store. Restarting my iMac seems to fix it, but the problem returns after a period of use. Quitting and restarting iTunes does not fix the problem.
It seems that I need to reinstall Quicktime and/or iTunes (not sure how), but I'm open to other suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.

    jmaybee,
You need to go get a program called Pacifist 3.2.2 (it's shareware but you can use it for free - I cannot say enough of how great this program is, it has saved my skin more times than I can count)
    http://www.charlessoft.com
Then get the Snow Leopard disk that came with your system and put it in the optical drive and let it mount.
Using Pacifist, use the "Open Apple Install Discs" button, select the Snow Leopard disk and let it read the package installers. This may take some time, as it's got to read the DVD and pull up all the installer .pkg files..
When Pacifist is done, you'll see something that looks like this:
    http://home.comcast.net/~foodandart/MacForums/PacifistSnowLeopardQT.jpg
Dig down into the installer packages thusly:
    Contents of OSInstall.mpkg
       Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware
          Contents of EssentialSystemSoftwareGroup
             Contents of Essentials.pkg
                Applications
                   QuickTime Player.app
Select the QuickTime player to highlight it, then you just hit the large arrow at the upper left corner of the Pacifist window (sorry for my black Snow Leopard scheme making things hard to see) and it will ask you if you are certain and also to backup files (why? they're gone already!) and it will install the QuickTime Player to the default location in your Applications folder.
I *just* tried this with my own system and tossed my original copy of QTX on the Desktop and the new install works perfect.
    There you go..
    Regards,
    Deb.

  • Itunes refusing to play one song

I brought some time ago approx 9 tunes at the same time. Itunes is now asking to authorise my PC as this song is not authorise.
I have followed all the online instructions and the song is aligned with my Itunes account and it is visible in my Itunes history.
I have also followed the delete a the file through Finder and reauthorised my PC. PC is authorised but this song is not?
Oh and I recently upgraded Itunes to 11.3.
Has anyone any idea what is wrong?
    Cheers

Not sure what is going on as all the other songs brought at the same time all play OK

  • Itunes will not play anything

I open iTunes, select a song from the library, and the song will not play. No sound, no movement on the status bar.

    Hi bdonahy,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Are you able to hear sound in other applications?
If you are having issues with iTunes for Windows, it may be best to completely uninstall iTunes and related components.  See this article for information:

  • 1st generation seen by itunes but not playing anything.

1st gen ipod shuffle user. reinstalled itunes7 on a new machine and tried to use shuffle on new machine. ran ipod reinstall program to start over. itunes will see the ipod and im able to add items via itunes. nothing however is playing on the unit itself. wondering what step im missing. any help appreciated thanks

Does the loading process seem to be normal? Are any extraneous icons left in the Shuffle's playlist after the upload is completed? Does the light display on the Shuffle appear to be normal when you attempt to play, the same as you're used to seeing?

  • Hi - My ipod Classic 120gb picks on artists at random and refuses to play anything by them thereafter.

It started about 6 months ago - once picked, the artists remain unplayable.  The number of artists it doesn't like is slowly growing by about 1 a month!  They all play fine on my iPhone.  I've reinstalled iTunes and sent the iPod off to bbe mended, but they say there is nothing wrong with it!  It is very frustratiing.  Any ideas?

I have this very same problem. However, when I watch a film or music video it plays pretty much to the end.......
I have also reset my iPod and no difference. ITunes / Apple say it is a problem and to keep resetting my iPod which is ridiculous as this takes an age to reformat every album and film and game I have for the thing.
At first I thought it was the battery but after watching a 3 hour film (The Great Escape - good film) it shows no sign of locking up at all.
I'm at a loss as the iPod is about full and is aways connected to the car.
Cheers for any help I may be able to get........
