ITunes repeatedly looses file locations of some songs

I recently had to move my music files to a new external hard drive. After getting everything moved over and changing the settings, I can now listen to import most music just fine. However, each time I try to sink my iPod, the program manages to loose about 200 songs (out of many, many more than that). Even if I individually reset the file location, the next time I synch, files are missing again. Most of the time, the files are similar, but sometimes it seems like new, random files are the ones that are lost. The files remain in their original location on the external HD, it's just that iTunes seems to have forgotten what that location was. Luckily, it seems I can still listen to my music on my iPod, and nothing is ever deleted from my HD, but it is rather annoying seeing 100 new exclamation points all the time. Any suggestions?

I have a similar issue. I moved my music folder to a new internal drive on my PC. Now, though I can see my playlists and all 8,000 songs listed in iTunes, every song has the exclamation mark. I can can go one by one and redirect iTunes to find it on the new drive, but have been unable to get the settings to work in Preferences and Advanced tab for "consolidate library". I DON't want to just create anew library if that means losing all the ratings/etc I have spent time on with the original database.
Do you think the instructions you give here will work for me too?
Thanks!

Diesel vdub asked a question which you have answered yourself, although you don't appear to realise it.
He/she (sorry diesel, I don't know) asked: "Is the song actually on the computer?" and you stated that: "I transfered all songs onto the new computer" and "I looked in the folder but the songs just cant be found" so the copy hasn't worked.
You also mention manually copying, as opposed to a previous (presumably different) method.
How are you trying to copy these songs? Do the copy first and make sure that works. If your first method doesn't work, try a diifferent one - such as the manual copy you referred to (copying onto a memory stick, card, disc etc. etc.)
Until you sort out why your method of copying hasn't worked, everything else you "try" is a waste of time.

Apparently, security programs like Macafee and Norton view Itunes updates as new programs and block then from access. If you add Itunes to the list of exemptions, it solves the problem.

  • ITunes keeps changing file locations to something wrong when syncing

I have my music stored on a Synology DS409 NAS which is mounted using afp as /Volumes/music. I also have another mount from the same NAS as /Volumes/photo. Whenever I try syncing my iPhone or an iPod, I get errors about some files not syncing because they could not be played.
On looking at some of these files in iTunes using Get Info, the location has been changed from its original (correct) /Volumes/music/xx to some random picture file under /Volumes/photo/xx
I know the original file was correct because I've checked the iTunes Library xml file for any occurrence of "photo" and found none before syncing. I can manually fix the errors by deleting them items from iTunes and re-adding them, but I then get more errors on different files when syncing next.
I used to have the iTunes server feature turned on on the Synology DS409, but I've turned that off now. I wondered whether it was down to the /Volumes/music file system disappearing occasionally (another issue!) but it has happened even when the music folder is mounted. Very frustrating!
As a last resort, I could copy the music on to the local disk in my iMac, but that defeats the point of the NAS really. It should work.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the SHIFT key. This dialog should appear:
If iTunes opens normally close it and try again. Use Choose Libraray... to open the copy of your library on the external drive. Check the location of the media folder once opened. You can now remove the iTunes folder on C: without it reappearing.

  • Itunes won't let me download some songs without 7.6.2

When i attempt to download some songs, i get a message "You must download version 7.6.2." I download it, restart the computer and it still does it! I don't know what else to do. Other songs i download with no problem. I'm running windows xp.

Go to Help->About iTunes and determine what version of iTunes you are actually running.
If it isn't 7.6.2, you are not installing it correctly.
If it is 7.6.2, I would recommend contacting iTunes support.

  • Why is iTunes play count not updating for SOME songs played on iPod Touch?

I have noticed that when I play some songs on my iPod the play count won't update. This only happens with some I bought recently. I was actually testing witha song I purchased 3 weeks ago and the play count will only update if I play it on the computer. However, when I played the song on my iPod Touch 4g running iOS 5, nothing happened. How can I fix this as I use the recently played playlist quite often. also, Im pretty sure most of the songs were downloaded from iTunes app in my iPod.

I've had this problem before with my 1G and still have it with my 2G. I can replicate it EVERY TIME.
If I listen to nothing but music on my iPod touch, and then go back home and sync, I have no problems with the playcount and smart playlists.
However, if I listen to a bunch of music, then play a few games, or browse Safari for a while, any record of my recently listened to music is wiped out. The Music application even loses my place in what song I was listening to and even which artist/album I was last listening to -- kicking me back to main music screen when I click the Music icon on the Home screen.
My hypothesis -- Apple is not using a dedicated/untouchable portion of memory to store playcounts. It is shared with all other memory access. So if an application or Safari uses a lot of memory during your session AFTER you've played your music, your playcounts gets wiped out in the process.
But that's just my take on the situation.

  • ITunes points to the wrong location for some songs. I can't fix it...

    Hello,
I have an iTunes library with 6,000+ songs, and I can't afford to lose them all. I tried to copied my entire iTunes folder to my external hard drive, and now most of my songs have the grey exclamation point next to them saying they can't be found. I checked the info of those missing songs, and it says the file path is "file://localhost/Volumes/MUSIC/Music/Artist/Album/Track Title.mp3". However, the actual path should be "/Volumes/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Artist/Album/Track Title.mp3" I think. How can I fix these songs? Some few random songs that still work are pointing to the internal hard drive on my mac in the original iTunes folder. How can I get all the locations set to the right place? Even if I can get it working from my internal hard drive again, that would be good.
I really need to keep all of the track information that is in the iTunes library file (Date added, play count, rating, etc.)
Please help me out, I cannot figure this out to save my life. If you need any other information, please just let me know.
    Thank you,
    Christian

I messed around with the XML file and the .itdb file and somehow I got it to point to my other hard drive and I didn't lose any of my dates added. I wish I payed more attention to what I did so I could help other people with this issue...

  • ITunes Library.itl file location

I've set my iTunes music folder to my C: drive but my iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml files are located on a network drive.
How do I move the iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml files to my C: drive?
Within iTunes preferences I've set my iTunes music folder location to C:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music. When importing CDs the actual tracks are stored here but the library file is held on my network drive.
      Windows 2000

Those files are hardwired to be placed in the '...\My Documents\My Music\iTunes' folder of the computer. Seems as if your network is directing the My Documents special folder to the network drive.
Here is a way to change it:
Using TweakUI to Move or Create Your Library/My Music Location
First, see this Article for some background information: What are the iTunes Library files?
Use TweakUI (See this Article: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302398 ) to create a 'My Music' folder in a spot where you desire. iTunes should then find this location and deposit its Library files there, and the 'iTunes' folder and sub-folders as well (if you direct it to).

  • Upgraded iTunes to 6.0.1 & now some songs can't be "found"

I completed a recent upgrade to iTunes & several songs now have an exclaimation point next to them. When I click on them, I get an error message that says, "Song can't be used because the original file could not be found."
All of the songs were imported from CDs but not all of the songs from that import were affected (they play normally.)
I can reimport many of them, but some of them were from the library, friends, etc.
    Any thoughts?

    Roberta hello,
    The remedy is very easy...
Open the iTunes folder and select the iTunes Library file and type command -D
this will make another copy for safe keeping, if anything goes wrong you can always return this copy ... leave the duplicate file where it is.
Start iTunes in the normal way and open the preferences > advanced > general tab... set NOT to copy files when adding to library and DO keep iTunes Music folder organized.... OK your changes.
From the file menu select 'add to library' and choose the iTunes Music folder.
After iTunes has checked and made any adjustments needed have a look and see if any problems still exist ... come and let me know Roberta ... TP

  • Itunes repeatedly requests to authorize on one song

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389
I have been having some trouble playing one or two songs in my library that I previously purchased from iTunes.  I have followed each of the different troubleshooting solutions in the above article.  The only one I was not able to do effectively was the "authorize using the correct account name" section.  I could not find a field in my summary info that showed an account name.
Here's a bit more information...  I have changed the email address I use for my Apple ID, so I thought that might be the issue.  However, if I try to log in to iTunes using my former email address, it is not recognized.  I have also checked my purchase history in the iTunes store, and the song in question shows.  When I click on it, I get the same pop-up asking me to authorize the computer to play the song.  Then when I do, I get a message that says it's already authorized.  I'm going around and around in a loop.
Just when I was at the height of frustration, I tried to contact Apple support for iTunes through the contact us link.  When I try to select my topic, I get a message that says it can't be processed and to try again - that happens no matter which iTunes topic I try to select.
Can anyone offer any other thoughts on getting these songs authorized?
    Thank you!

Now I'm embarrassed...  I deleted it and redownloaded the song, and it plays.

  • When syncing iTunes with Apple TV (1st gen) some songs and movies will not sync..

I get the message that these songs and movies are not authorized to play on this computer. The computer is authorized and the songs and movies will play on the computer but will not sync to Apple TV
    Any advice is aproeciated.

    Thanks for the reply WC
    Yes they do.
They origialnally played just fine. I moved my entire iTunes library to a new computer and now only 62 songs, out of over 2000, and two of four movies won't sync. All songs and movies are in same folders and same format.
I already selected "keep iTunes media folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library"
using iTunes 10.7 and OSX 10.8.2
