ITunes reports "Apple Mobile Device" service error

After much posting and messing around to find a solution to my service crash issues, I have some advice for others to share.
PROBLEM: If you launch "iTunes" and receive a message indicating that: This i<device> cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started. The iPod/iPhone will not appear, nor will the system allow you to interact with the device.
CAUSE: There is usually another software installation that is "hooking" into the system and causing issues. These are usually in the form of proxy, firewall, anti-virus, and/or remote control programs.
SOLUTION: Use the "Computer Management" MMC (right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage") to track down the issue. Please do the following:
1) Check the "Services" section. You should see an entry called "Apple Mobile Device". This should be started with a startup value of "Automatic". If the status is "Stopped" (or at least indicates that it is not "Started"), then attempt to start the service. if nothing else, this will tell you if the required binary/executable is located in the correct directory for the service entry. If the service cannot start, or if the service reports that the file is missing, attempt to re-install the "Apple Mobile Device" MSI. Worse case, you may need to uninstall iTunes and re-install.
2) Try crashing the service again. The usual symptoms of this issue are that the service can be started, and will operate fine until iTunes is loaded, at which point the error message appears regarding the service (not being started). If you check the "services" section at this time, you will likely see that the previously running service is now stopped. Doing this will also create a new set of crash events in teh event log. Take note of the time when you "crash" the service and continue to the next step.
3) Check the "Event Viewer" section. locate the time of the service crash. The entries should be listed with a red "X" icon. now look at the event. This should tell you what the "Faulting module name" is. If you are using a proxy application or firewall, you may see something like "FPServiceProvider.dll" (Foxyproxy), "MPFP.dll" (McAfee Firewall), or even a generic entry like "ntdll.dll" (The Windows user environment). In every case (except "ntdll.dll") you swhould be able to search the web for the "DLL" or "EXE" name and work out what application is causing the issue. in the case of "ntdll.dll", you'll need to look for software that hooks into your system. Software like "DyKnow" remote control and other remote administration tools.
If you have installed a remote administration, remote control and/or security suite between a working iTunes and one that crashes, you may want to start with removing those as a test. Once I removed our faulty application (and it's hooks into the OS), iTunes funcationality was fully restored.
This is a "for your information" post. Hopefully it will save the trouble I had to go through to fix this problem.

Thank you so much for this. This was the most helpful advice I could found and seems likely to be applicable to many other people. I had the problem of my iPhone suddenly not being recognized by iTunes and I couldn't figure out why. Although I didn't have exactly the same scenario as the OP, (no actual crash, just an error message from iTunes saying device could not be used because Apple Mobile Device Service was not started) I used the info above to localise the conflicting software (proxy software - doh!). After uninstalling that and rebooting everything is good again. Thanks once more.

  • Iphone apple mobile device service error

    Hello,
I recently restored my computer back to factory settings, however since I have done this I cannot get itunes to work with my iphone 3g (which in turn is currently not able to send text messages), i assume it needs some sort of update. Though i'm not sure yet cause i need to get past the problem of linking my iphone to my computer first.
When I plug the iphone in i get the message "this iphone cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not started".
so far having read advice on the internet i have tried
    - going into control panel-->administrative tools--->services and tried to start from there which brings up the message
"the apple mobile device service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance logs and alert services"
    - i have tried this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1275
    - i have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling itunes several times (probably about 6 times now).
    - note, i have uninstalled/disabled all firewalls, virus checkers etc.
i am also now getting an error message that Bonjour won't install properly on the last few reinstallations, which i'm not really bothered about it at the moment, as i'm not sure it will cause me any problems.
last thing to note - first time i installed itunes after restoring my computer, it came to a screen and asked if i want to download 3 things. One was quicktime, another was safari and the 3rd i can't remember. I opted to download safari and quicktime but not the 3rd. However I have the feeling it was something to do with apple mobile device service, and by choosing not to download it is the source of all my problems with itunes.
Everytime i reinstall itunes i cannot get back to this screen, thus i have no safari. So if anyone knows how to get to that screen then please advise.
Sorry for long post but this is doing my head in, i have spent so much time on it. Seriously don't know what to do other than restore my computer back to factory settings.

  • Windows 7 itunes 9 - apple mobile device service is not started

Here is a tip I discovered.
If you are running Windows 7 and having an issue your iphone being recognized by itunes (but Windows can see it fine) i.e.
this iphone cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not stared
Be sure you are not running this application:
    FoxyProxy Video Utility
This will prevent the iphone and itunes to speak to each other. It will also affect other applications (Crashplan).
    C:\Program Files\FoxyProxy\FoxyProxy Video Utility\FPServiceProvider.dll

Hmm, I clicked on the "This helped me" link but it doesn't sjhow that you received the five points.
No worries. There's a slight delay in general between points assignments, and those points-assigned appearing in people's tallies. I got an automatic notification that I'd been "helpful" here and then a few minutes later the 5 appeared in my tally.
(There's also a seperate issue I've noticed where IE 9 doesn't show points-assigned in some topics, when some other browsers do.)

  • ITunes Support (Apple Mobile Device Service)

When Installing iTunes (Currently trying version 11.0.4, Other versions do the same thing), When trying to start services. I get an error every time.
Service "Apple Mobile Device" (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
I'm given the option to Abort, Retry, or Ignore. Retry brings me to same problem. Ignore gives me a failed Apple Mobile Device so I cannot sync my iPhone 4.
I've been working on this for several hours. And could use any quick assistance possible. This works fine on my laptop. But it is rather vital for my main computer to use this as well. I have some files and registry files copied from the laptop if needed.
I've tried many things, but I'm willing to retry.
Please do not suggest "Run as Administrator" as well as "Start the service in Task Manager"

Nevermind. I finally fixed it myself.
    1.) Uninstall ALL Apple Products
    2.) Reboot Computer
3.) Run Internet Explorer (Need IE To Use Save As)
4.) Download Latest iTunes & And SAVE AS To Save iTunesSetup.exe or iTunes64Setup.exe DIRECTLY To Desktop
5.) Run iTunes Setup as Administrator
    6.) Install with Default Settings
7.) Should now pass the Service Error
8.) When Install finishes (BEFORE HITTING FINISH) Plug in iOS Device. Then Select Finish
This is what finally worked for me.

  • Apple Mobile Device Service has stopped working. Vista SP2, iTunes 10.5

Hi there. I've been having an issue syncing my iPhone to iTunes. Here's a description of the problem:
-With an up-to-date Apple Mobile Device Service, error windows constantly pop-up saying that it has stopped working. If I close the error window, another one pops up fifteen seconds later.
-If I plug my iPhone into my computer, it is not recognized in iTunes, because Apple Mobile Device Service is not running.
-This error does not occur on my desktop PC, so I have been able to sync my iPhone by loading all of my files onto a USB and transferring them onto it. However, I would much rather not.
Here are the steps that I have taken:
-Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 10.5 with firewall off
-Individually uninstalled and reinstalled the Apple Mobile Device Service with firewall off
-Stopped and Restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service in Administrative Tools -> Services
-Extensively searched the internet for solutions
-Replaced Apple Mobile Device Service for iTunes 10.5 with Apple Mobile Device Service for iTunes 10.1 (This worked PARTIALLY. The error windows have now stopped popping up altogether, but I cannot sync with iTunes because the Apple Mobile Device Service is out of date. It asks me to update it, I agree, and I get the Apple Mobile Device Service that spawns error windows and still does not allow me to sync my iPhone.)
I am running Windows Vista SP2, and iTunes 10.5. My Internet Security suite is AVG Internet Security 2011. My iPhone is running iOS 5.0.0. Here is a full report of the error:

Just a shot in the dark, but have you downloaded any program from Megaupload, like MegaKey?  If so then that is your problem. I had been having the exact same problem for the past 2 weeks. I couldn't figure out what it was and tried everything that you have.. Then was on a board and someone mentioned Megakey. Having tried everything else, I uninstalled the program and reinstalled the current ITunes and AMDS. My Ipad and Iphone connected with no problem.

  • Apple Mobile Device Service does not install

    Hello @all,
    I've got a big problem.
I've installed the 8.1 Update of Itunes and Apple Mobile Device Service would not be installed. After registering modules the setup reverses all actions.
Now I can start Itunes but my IPhone can't sync. Theres a German Message like: "This IPhone can not be used because it needs software wich is not installed. Pleas start the ITunes Setup to uninstall Itunes and reinstall the ITunes 64-Bit Version."
I've uninstalled all Apple components on the PC, cleaned up the registry... but it doesn't work. An older version of Itunes doesn't work too. What can I do? Please help me.
My system is Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit

    Hello DM06851,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with installing the latest iTunes update.  I recommend following the steps below:
    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
I understand that you have already uninstalled iTunes, but when you get to this step, it is important to uninstall iTunes and the related components in the order listed in the link for that step.

Just downloaded iTunes to new dell laptop, tried syncing my iPhone get an error message:  "this iPhone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started".  What is the issue, had this phone over a year??

I had this problem before. I like to disable extra services to speed up my computer and I disabled the Apple Mobile Device service and had to re-enable this.
You can do that by going Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. Once you have gone to the services window, look for Apple Mobile Device and right-click. Select "Properties". There should be some information about the service as well as the label "Startup Type" with a drop-down menu beside it. If it says "disabled", that is your problem; Change the selection to anything except disabled (Automatic is easier and ensures that you can sync as soon as itunes opens).
If this doesn't work, I would look into your anti-virus' settings. Good Luck!
