ITunes resyncs entire Library everytime iPod is connected

iTunes always resyncs my entire library (music, videos, and games) whenever I connect it to my mac to sync newly added songs or charge. It does this automatically and I end up having to wait for about an hour as my library is about 30GB. This is really insane. It should only have to sync the newly added stuff right?

Thanks, but I have tried that a number of times due to issues with this iPod and my G5, which causes the iPod to lock up. I have moved my library to an external drive and am now syncing from my Dual G4 because of that. Also, for whatever reason, after a recent update, the iPod wouldn't play any of my recently purchased Music Store content and I had to due the restore. It is resyncing the entire library right now and this is the first time I have connected it to my mac since then.

  • ITunes copies entire library to iPod

For some strange reason since upgrading to iTunes 7, my iTunes attempts to copy my entire library to my iPod with Autosync...i have plenty of room on my iPod, but it's just annoying...i have certain songs unchecked, but it copies them over anyway...in the earlier versions it wouldn't copy those tracks...
Anybody got any advice on this?

    Selec the iPod in iTunes.

  • Itunes wont automatically open when ipod is connected

    Hello there
basically the above ^^ itunes wont open automatically when ipod is connected ive tried the 5 steps and ive also tried the whole tray and exit thing its not WORKING!
    all help much apprciated thanks

I have a interesting hunch that somehow Windows is doing something to you...
One thing you might want to see is if within Windows if the iPod service is running... As there are certain services which automatically get installed when itunes is loaded. These notice the device and loads the app..
Just for reference, here are my Windows Services and their status:
Apple Mobile Device - Started & Automatic
    Bonjour - Started & Automatic
iPod Service - Started & Manual
I thought that a 4th service existed, but can't find it...
Have you tried uninstalling iTunes and downloading to reinstall it again, that might help.. Or else it has something deeper do to with your computer itself!
That's about all I can offer right now.

I had to reinstall Itunes and my library and ipods did not reinstall how do i get these back?

    Hello DHolland1
You can do one of two things, first is to locate the songs on your computer by looking in the iTunes Folder. Once found then drag and drop them on top of iTunes to import them in. The second option is to revert back to a previous version of your iTunes library to get the data back before you installed. The articles below will assist with those steps.

  • Itunes syncs entire library every time it is connected to ipod touch

    Symptoms:
Connecting iPod Touch (2.2) to my computer initiates a sync as it should... however, the ENTIRE library is sync'd anytime there is ANY change. If I choose a new playlist to add to ipod, the entire library syncs. If I get a new audiobook, the entire library syncs. ANY CHANGE at all, and the entire library syncs. (I think that is a thorough description)
This is extremely obnoxious because it takes over an hour to sync everything (so there is no quick add on the way out-the-door. PLUS placeholders are totally lost.
New symptom. I tried to change to manual management of music and such... and then to switch it back, tried resetting ipod... and NOW, audiobooks are not recognized. There is no menu or anything on my ipod to allow playing of audiobooks. ***?

Problem seems to have been resolved with iTunes 8.0.2
Some songs still sync despite the fact that they are already on the iPod. However, now it is usually limited to 20-30 per sync

  • Itunes will not start when ipod is connected

When itunes runs it sees my ipod and all works fine. I have the box under Devices checked to start itunes when ipod connected. Thanks for your help

    Hello Loggroller,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you talking about the *Open iTunes when this iPod is connected* option from under your iPod's Summary tab? If not, make sure you have this option ticked as well.
It might not hurt to try and remove and re-install iTunes and all Apple related software using these instructions.

  • ITunes will not launch when iPod is connected

I've been having a problem over the last several days where iTunes will bounce a couple of times in the Dock, the black triangle appears below the Dock icon, but no window opens up and eventually iTunes shows that it's not responding. I am unable to force quit or kill it in Activity Monitor, and it prevents logging out, restarting or shutting down. I can kill it from the Terminal, and it immediately disappears from 'top' but takes several minutes to disappear from Activity Monitor or to lose the black triangle in the Dock. Trashing the plists for iTunes does not help, and Preferential Treatment and TinkerTool System both report that all is well. I ran the full suite of TechTool Pro tests, as well as directory maintenance and defragging. I also ran the maintenance tasks, disk optimization and pre-binding in TinkerTool System. I've repaired permissions with Disk Utility. iTunes appears to be working normally and without issue in my wife's user. Finally, after reading a post here, I tried unplugging my wife's iPod Shuffle before opening iTunes, and lo and behold, iTunes popped right up. If I connect it after starting iTunes, it's detected as normal.
So, my shotgun ammo is exhausted. Anybody have any idea what would cause my user to be unable to open iTunes when an iPod is connected, but the same works just fine with my wife's user?

    Nobody ever solved this

  • ITunes crashes on exit when iPod is connected, but not otherwise?

I had this problem ever since I installed iTunes 7...
It occoured as soon as I installed the new verison while still using my old 4gb first gen. iPod nano.
Now I just recently bought a new second generation nano, and still have the same problem.
And the issue is, Whenever I close iTunes while my iPod is connected (but not being updated), i get the message that "iTunes.exe has preformed an illegal operation and will be closed".
Though I just noticed that if I disconnect the iPod before closing itunes, it closes fine and normally.
I Have tried to solve it by following toturials for uninstalling both just iTunes, and iTunes + QuickTime at the same time, and preform separate installations after cleaning the temp. folder and restarting. None of it has helped me solve the problem
-And I have lived with ifor a while, but it is getting really annoying if I am sititng on my computer and jsut close iTunes, without disonnecting my iPod, to run another program using sound or a lot of system resources. And thne each time get the error-message that "iTunes preformed an illegal operation and..."
Anytihng that can be done? -I run NO plugins for the record, and the iPod is connected by USB cable (seeing it is a Nano)
Anything anyne can suggest that I'd do, then please tell.
-Or if anyone need to know more then please ask.

Hi, Im sorry just to add on to this discussion but I couldnt figure out how to start a new discussion and I am going mad! I have a new ipod because my last one was stolen and I have plugged it in and my PC wont recognise it. I think that is because my old ipod is the only one my computer will accept. Can that be right? It said the hardware device had been detected and then it said that it was troubled and it simply did not work. Now it is plugged in and not at all recognised in my computer anywhere. Can any one help this clueless girl who simply wants to listen to music again?
    Thank you.

  • ITunes No Longer Synching With iPods, Not Connecting with iTunes Store

iPods: both iPod touch, 2nd Generation, 8GB
    iTunes: (Most Recent Version)
    Issue:
For a while, the iPods of myself and a family member have not been able to synch our iPods with iTunes anymore: when plugged in, it only appears to charge, does not show up in "Devices", does not do anything. I've run Diagnostics several times, tried redownloading iTunes, & checked settings, etc.
Also, whenever I try to go into iTunes Store, it says that it "Cannot connect to iTunes Store", even if connection to the internet is fine.
These problems started occurring simultaneously, as well as out of no where. As I recall, I had no problem synching & going into iTunes Store the day before.

Ask your other family members if they did. Something has to have changed.
I am betting it's something on the PC, since two ipods going bad at the same time would be highly unlikely.
If you have auto updates turned on for Windows & security software, it might not even be obvious they occurred.
You can try restarting your modems/routers/and PC, in that order.

  • ITunes does not open when iPod is connected

Although the option is checked in iTunes for this iPod touch, iTunes does not automatically open when the iPod is connected.  iTunes recognizes the iPod and syncs work as expected, but I have to launch iTunes 'manually'.
Both the MacBook Pro and the iPod touch are running the latest OS and iOS available and iTunes is up to date.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Hi again,
I couldn't find the answer to this question when I searched for it using the title, but once I entered the question correct answers from previous users' questions appeared.  Seems to be a problem with the search engine...
Anyway, I haven't tried Jolly Giant's solution because the following solution worked before I saw it.  Here's how I fixed the problem:
    1) Open System Preferences/Accounts,
    2) Click Login Items tab,
    3) Check if iTunesHelper is in list, probably not there (If it is then try Jolly Giant's solution.),
    4) Leave the Accounts/Login Items window open and navigate to the iTunes application, probably in your Applications folder, then Right or CTRL-Click the application icon,
    5) Choose 'Show Package Contents' from the pop up menu,
    6) In the new Finder window that opens, open the Contents folder,
    7) Then open the Resources folder,
    8) Find the file named 'iTunesHelper.app' and drag it to the Accounts/Login Items list,
    9) Close all windows and log out of your account, then log back in.
That should install the helper that checks if a device has been plugged in and opens iTunes as selected.

  • ITunes doesn't launch when iPod is connected

It used to but suddenly stopped.  It does show up on the device list.  The option box is checked.  I've turned the iPod off and even restarted my Mac.  It launches iPhoto, but not iTunes.  I've got the latest version of iTunes.

  • HELP - iTunes 9. Library on external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

OK. I've done a search and found similar questions, but no real answer to my problem, so here goes:
I've got all my media contained on an external drive connected via usb to my airport extreme. My problem is that iTunes continually (95% of the time) redirects itself back to default folder on my iBook. The external drive is always on, so I'm not sure why iTunes seems to redirect itself. I have noticed that when I search out my external drive through Finder, there is a slight lag before the file list comes up? Could this be the iTunes issue? (it's trying to connect, but the lag throws it off, so it thinks the folder isn't there and creates a new one?)
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Final follow up: Sorry this took so long, but better late than never. So, I figured out why there was an issue with the "login item" solution....multiple accounts. It seems that one of the accounts wasn't properly login onto the Airport Express (and ultimately the external drive). This was bringing up an error message, but I wasn't seeing it (as it was showing up under the other account). Once I took care of the login issue on the other account, all was well. So, to sum it up, the best solution to this problem seems to be setting the external drive as a login item. Thanks again. The help was much appreciated.

  • ITunes not coming up when iPod is connected to laptop

When I plug my iPod Nano into the laptop where my iTunes music library is stored, the iTunes program doesn't begin automatically and the laptop gives me a prompt indicating that it is recognizing the iPod as an E drive. Meanwhile, the iPod shows "Do Not Disconnect." The cable is fine, as it works on my desktop, and I get the same response on the laptop regardless of what USB port I used. I tried switching my iPod so that it was tied to the iTunes library on the desktop, but this only resulted in all the pre-loaded garbage on the desktop replacing all of the songs I liked on the iPod. The iTunes software on the laptop will come up when I click on the icon, and the library with the songs I like is still intact there. So how do I get the laptop to recognize the iPod properly, or in the alternative, copy the iTunes library from the laptop to the desktop? I'm hesitant to try reloading the iTunes software on the laptop for fear of wiping out the iTunes library.

I have the same-ish problem, my laptop is not showing my iPod even though the computer says it's there and it appears connected in diagnostics.
You can try the 7 R's suggested by Apple but they haven't worked for me. If you reinstall iTunes you won't erase all your music because it's stored in the library, not in iTunes itself - trust me I've uninstalled and reinstalled it about 17 times over the past day or two and all my music is still there.
If you find a solution PLEASE let me know!

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!
