Itunes rip speed

Has anyone tested ripping a CD yet? I was wondering what kind of average and max rip speed you were seeing. I have a G4 1.42 with pioneer 107 with firmware update to unlock extra burn and read speeds and I average about 18x and I have seen about 25 once in a while. Does the Mac Pro kill this or is it limited to the speed of the DVD drive? I have a Mac pro on order and was just curious about a real world test.

I have a Mac Pro 3.0 Ghz with two superdrives. I imported a cd earlier today, and on average, I was getting 25-28x.
Hope this helps.

  • Slow iTunes rip speed

Have seen previous threads on this topic, but no answers. Just got an iPod for xmas. Am trying to rip CD's and getting speeds of 1.2 to 1.5X. I'm using 6.0.1 on an iMac. I do not have the use error correction box checked. The CD's are spotless. Is this fixable? Am I doomed to slow download speeds? Are earlier versions of iTunes better?

iTunes' AAC encoder is heavily optimized for the Velocity Engine instruction set, which G3 processors cannot take advantage of, so I suppose that your slow speeds might be normal. Encoding to MP3 might be faster.

  • How do i adjust iTunes playback speed on my mac ?

How do i adjust iTunes playback speed on my mac (OSX 10.10.2) ?
I'd like to play podcasts at 1.5x, without running them through a separate script.

I have not see mention of any way in iTunes itself.
Changing playback speed in iTunes - https://discussions.apple.com/message/11432266 - primarily for audiobooks but if you read the whole thread there is mention of ways to do this with other media.

  • ITunes 9 on Leopard 10.5.8 - RIP speeds now stuck at 8x

    Hi,
So I was happily importing some new cd's into my collection, all were around 30-40x on my G5 Powermac Dual 1.8
I had one cd that the last track was not reading and so I turned on error correction, then tried to rip that track again.
The track just would not rip, so i moved on.. went back and turned off error correction.
Now every-time I import my speeds are stuck at 8x and will not go back to normal!
I have shutdown itunes, restarted it.. no change
I have rebooted the machine.. no change
The error correction is not checked but now the drive is still ripping with error correction on, regardless of what the check box shows!
Anyone have this happen yet with iTunes 9?
Is there a way I can delete the preference caches for itunes to get error correction to really be off?
I did not have this issue with old ver of itunes prior to 9 release.
I am now hating life as I have about 30 cd's to rip and its like being back in the year 2000 lol
I did use roxio to do a rip and it rips at full speed, so this is isolated to iTunes 9
Thanks in advance for any help

    Jim,
    Thanks for the quick response!
That is what it needed, I deleted it and the redid the settings
    Now ripping again @ 40x +
So just for fun, i checked the error correction box again and did a rip at 8x as expected.
Then I unchecked the error correction box, and again the problem remained.
Looks to be a bug discovery in iTunes 9, as I did this on my MacPro as well and it did the same thing.
I had to delete the plist again to resolve it.
    Thanks so much!

  • Ripping speed for iTunes

Is there a way to enhance the speed at which to rip songs from CDs into iTunes? It is painfully slow vs. other music services. Is there a premium version of iTunes available?

*is there a premium version of iTunes available?*
No there's not, there is only one standard iTunes program, there's no enhanced version.

  • Slow ripping speed in iTunes

I get around 4x-10x when importing CD's. Is this normal

I have noticed the same thing, but attributed it to the slower DVD-ROM drive. Perhaps that was the wrong assumption, but what I really want to address it the following comment:
    so maybe the
newer (Universal) version of iTunes is the problemr
rather than the MacBook - anybody else seen the issue
    on other machines?
I have had crashing issues with iTunes on my MBP. I believe that it is because of the Universal version of iTunes. I have a post on this issue in the iTunes discussion (look up "iTunes freezing"). Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

  • Rip speed slower with imacg5 versuz emacg4

    Hi there,
Can anyone explain why an emac G4 1,25 chz.1G ram OSX 10.3.9 rips an audio cd in itunes 6.0 TWICE the speed than a brand new Imac isight G5 1G ram 20inch OSX 10.4.3 in itunes 6.0.1.??? I allready caled the aplle care support and tried some testing no results , I went to the aplle center and tested on their Imac isight G5 1G ram 20inch same speed as mine. Do i have a SUPER emac or is the new imac just slower???

Hi SJP. The DL superdrive in the iMac G5 iSight reads CD's at 24x.
The single layer superdrive in the eMacs read CD's at 32x.
THis seems to be the price we pay for having a dual layer slot loading drive.
If its any consolation the iMac superdrive WRITES at 24x, though, whereas the eMac superdrive only wrote at 16x (or, at least, this was the case with the last model that I could find specs for).
When I bought my Pb12 a couple of years back, one of the reasons that I opted for a combo drive over a superdrive for an internal burner was its far better performance with CD's. I think a case can still be made for getting an external FW burner for frequent use with Superdrive equipt iMacs and the like. They are usually significantly faster for both CD and DVD work.
    Cheers

  • ITunes ripping certain CDs slow and creating distorted tracks

I have just recently swicthed to iTunes after getting my new laptop and ripped my entire CD collection using it (iTunes 9.1.1 I believe).
Anyway, out of probably 200 CDs I've found 5 that just won't rip properly and I can't, no matter what I look for figure out why?
If anyone could help, the problem is that iTunes claims to be ripping at speeds of on average x0.4 to x0.6 (Where as all other CDs I get about x13) and estimating a rip time, but the estimation only goes down by 2 seconds every 40/50 seconds. After I finally gave in and let it rip an entire track (which took around an hour) the song was broken and distorted almost beyond recognition. I then decided to rip the track using Windows Media Player and it did it just fine.
    The Albums are;
    Muse -Showbiz
    Muse -Absolution
    Muse -HAARP
    Muse -Hullabloo Soundtrack
    Death Cab For Cutie -Plans
If that makes any difference to the problem
The CDs are clean and just about brand new since I only ever rip my CDs and then reserve them to the shelf, does anyone have any idea what's going wrong at all.
    Thankyou

You might be able to see if Gracenote is responsible for the slow-down by using the script Disable Gracenote
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow ripping speed - can't figure out why....

When ripping at aac 128 or 160, I only get speeds up to 5x or 7x (depending if it's the beginning of the CD or the end). I cannot figure out why this is:
--The drive is rated at 24x read speed
--This happens with every CD I try
--The setting for both IDE contollers are DMA
--The processor is Core Duo at 1.83. When ripping only 50 to 70 percent of the processor is used.
    --7200 rpm hard drive
    --1 gig ram
    --error correction is not enabled
    --no other programs are running
Another problem is that while ripping, the computer becomes extremely slow - I can't even type! When I press a key it takes half a second for that letter to show up!
I have had other computers with much slower specs that ripped CDs to iTunes much quicker. What can this be??
Someone please help me, I have been trying for a while to get to the bottom of this, and I think I may be losing my mind.....
    Thank you....

  • CD Ripping speed decreased over time?

I sat down to rip about 15 CD's last night... initially they were ripping in iTunes at about 20x with the DVR-109. as i got to the last ones the ripping slowed down alot, to about 4-9x, and the drive wasn't spinning as fast or loud as it had before.
any ideas on why this happened?

The exact same thing has been happening to me. I have ripped about 10 CDs already at speeds of up to 25 or 30x. Now my CDs are ripping at speeds of 4 to 7x. What the heck is going on? I have a PowerMac G5 with Dual 2.0 GHz processors. This should NOT be a problem for this computer!

  • Why does iTunes rip the first part of a CD quickly, but then slows down for the last few - Why?

I am trying to rip CD's into iTunes so sync with my iPhone.  When I currnetly rip the CD, it will rip the first 10 tracks in a matter of moments at 40x.  However, the last 4-5 tracks take forever - up to 20 minutes per track.  This has happened on multiple CD's and only with the v11.0.1.12.
    Any advice out there?

  • ITunes Ripped DVD Fustrations

    Hi Guys,
This topic must have been covered before but here is my problem, I have a new MAC Mini, 2TB Time Capsule both networked by Ethernet, 2x ATV's. I have ripped over 300 of my own DVD's to the Time Capsule via a registered version of DVD Fab for MAC, I have run the Rips through Identify to get all the Meta Data, this intern adds the Ripped DVD to my iTunes library. My iTunes Media files are located on the Time Capsule. Everything is the viewed via the ATV's using Home Sharing within iTunes.
All was working great until a few weeks ago when titles started to grey out on the MAC and disappear completely on the ATV's, I can get them back by using the get info option, but why do they keep disappearing? It's not all of the titles, just some of them, I would say about 40-50%, I also leave the MAC and the Time Capsule left on all the time, not sleeping.
This morning I checked my library and again a lot of the titles were not showing up but last night they were all there and working.......it's as if something nips in while I'm asleep and plays around with the library, please help anyone........ps sorry for the long post......

You will have to get the content into a format iTunes can accept. For format information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2729
Handbrake is often recommended for doing the conversion. It works quite well, in my experience, and has the benefit of being free.

  • ITunes download speed

Im experiencing severe fluctuations in download speed from iTunes. One minute its fast and then it slows right down. Is anyone else experiencing this? doing it on my iPhone and PC. I have never had this problem before. Not sure if its iTunes or my ISP, but I can download web pages with no problems.

In the last month or two iTunes Store in the UK has become so slow that it's virtually useless at times, and I think it's probably ISP throttling to blame, but Apple may also have a hand in it.
Virgin Media in the UK openly throttles traffic according to a complex and ever-changing customer disservice policy http://www.virginmedia.com/traffic
However, I've studied the current Virgin throttling policy and it doesn't account for the abysmal iTunes Store download speeds we're experiencing. Specifically:
    - It is not unusual for my 100Mbps down Virgin service to actually run at close to rated speed, and it almost always tests (ookla speed test website, or FTP to a server with a gigabit internet connection at my company's UK data centre) at least 40Mbps down.
    - Virgin claims that "fair use" of my 100Mbps service is 10GB during the period 4-9pm, and that once I've used that they will throttle my download speeds by 50% for 5 hours.
    - It's not that unusual for me to exceed the 10 GB limit.
    - If Virgin's policy is to throttle me 50% from 100 to 50 I should be seeing something like 50 down. But actually I NEVER see that (even if I'm on a gigabit fibre connection at the office, so I think Apple DOES have some sort of throttling), but I do frequently see iTunes running at 18-20 down. So being throttled by Virgin from 100 to 50 should make no real difference.
    - HOWEVER, on my Virgin connection, evenings in the last 2 months I'm FREQUENTLY getting 2 Mbps OR SLOWER itunes downloads.
    - Now here's the rub: at the same time I'm being effectively prevented from using iTunes or Apple TV, I can run a speed test (or download a file from my data centre OR pull streaming video from a server at my data centre) at 20-60 Mbps.
SO... It appears that Virgin may be SELECTIVELY throttling iTunes and/or Apple is throttling us.
Anyone have any further input on this? Or corroboration?
