ITunes Ripped DVD Fustrations

Hi Guys,
This topic must have been covered before but here is my problem, I have a new MAC Mini, 2TB Time Capsule both networked by Ethernet, 2x ATV's. I have ripped over 300 of my own DVD's to the Time Capsule via a registered version of DVD Fab for MAC, I have run the Rips through Identify to get all the Meta Data, this intern adds the Ripped DVD to my iTunes library. My iTunes Media files are located on the Time Capsule. Everything is the viewed via the ATV's using Home Sharing within iTunes.
All was working great until a few weeks ago when titles started to grey out on the MAC and disappear completely on the ATV's, I can get them back by using the get info option, but why do they keep disappearing? It's not all of the titles, just some of them, I would say about 40-50%, I also leave the MAC and the Time Capsule left on all the time, not sleeping.
This morning I checked my library and again a lot of the titles were not showing up but last night they were all there and working.......it's as if something nips in while I'm asleep and plays around with the library, please help anyone........ps sorry for the long post......

You will have to get the content into a format iTunes can accept. For format information, see:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2729
Handbrake is often recommended for doing the conversion. It works quite well, in my experience, and has the benefit of being free.
Regards.

Is there any way I can rip dvds to itunes, so that I can put them on my ipod? Please help me.

    Not directly, no.
You need to look for third-party applications that can convert DVD audio or video into a format that iTunes can handle.

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.
    Kind Regards,
    Julias

I am having a similar problem, and i cant contact ipod 2 ask 4 help - its not explainedo online:
my ipod will only upload video podcasts, no ordinary videos, except for one. they are all the same format (.MOV quicktime), and my i tunes has them all on it and plays them fine there, its just when i drag and drop or insert my videos onto my ipod any other way theydont get uploaded onto my ipod like everything else does, there seems no way that i can get my own videos onto it. only one video that isnt a podcast has ever uploaded, and its the same format as the others!
Any ideas or help would be apprichiated ( i cant spell:P)

  • Ripping DVDs into iTunes?

  • Ripping Dvd's

I am trying to use my new ipod and i was wondering does Super DVD to Ipod Converter, rip dvds to your computer and then convert them so itunes can use it? Please answer this somebody who know this!!!
      Windows XP

I tries Super DVD-iPod Converter, but with the DVDs I tried (Lion King and Fight Club) it didn't work. As far as I know, these DVDs needed to be Decrypted first. When I tried so, I didn't have sound with Super DVD-iPod Converter.
Cucusoft's converter immediately worked: it ripped the DVD and converted it all at once.
For me it's the best alternative!
Let me suggest you download trials of both programs (just Google both converters and add "free download". You'll find plenty of sites!). When you do so, REMEMBER those are Trial Versions. This implies that texts like "Trial Version" spoil your picture! You have to buy it to remove the texts. However, the trials are good for testing though! (Unless you want to convert complete DVDS in Trial, try to not fully convert the film, but Abort after a couple of minutes. At least Cucusoft's converter provides the opportunity to watch that couple of converted minute!)
    Good luck!

  • How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my iMac then move them to my iPads so my kids can watch them during a long drive?

How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my new iMac for viewing on my iPads and iPods (for kids during a long drive)? I've read about a lot of options, but I don't find anything that sounds authoritative on what is the ideal way. There is freeware out there and a bunch of paid options. I don't mind paying as long as I know what I'm getting will work. I've asked a few buddies and haven't gotten any straight answers. It seems like everyone has their own way that has its own set of benefits and issues. Any strong opinions out there on what works well (especially for a rookie)?

The backing up part isn't illegal, but in order to do this you need to break copy protection..this part is.

The answer would depend on what kind of DVDs you wish to copy.

  • Can apple tv and roku access same ripped dvd movies

    Had 2 roku's. Like 'em.
Ripped dvd's and stored on external. (about 150 movies)
Just bought the new apple tv
Do I now need to import all of the already ripped dvd's into itunes library in order to watch them on my apple tv
    (thus creating another separate file)
Or perhaps if they were all in itunes library, could roku access them ?
Maybe there's no way around this... but using roku / plex worked well and it was easy to get artwork etc
I did duplicate / import a couple movies into itunes. Get artwork - doesn"t seem to work for dvd ripped movies ?
Nature of the beast i'm guessing.....
    Any advice / direction appreciated.
    Thanks

You should be able to stream the video directly to the apple tv via itunes, without copying and creating another large file.
Just drag the movie files to your itunes.  It will take a few seconds and will "import" the movies.  Once created, you can right click the movie  in itunes and then select get info.  from there, you can give custom information, and even assign an icon or picture for the movie.  Look on line and you should be able to find dvd covers for most movies.
I do this all the time with my movies and also tv shows.

  • How do I rip DVDs using Hand Brake?

I am wanting to rip DVDs from my personal collection so that I can use them with Apple TV.   It was recommended to me to use the free software called Hand Brake.  I also had to download VLC media player as per HandBrake instructions.   I initially had some incompatability issues with 64-bit HandBrake and 32-bit VLC which I tried to overcome by downloading the 32-bit version of Handbrake as well.  (I can't download the 64-bit version of VLC because it apparently only operates with OSX 10.6.x or later......and I am running 10.5.8).    Thought I had it all worked out because the ripping proceeded as expected..... but on two attempts with two different DVDs, it hasn't worked.    The software tells me its completed it, but the end result has been failure (one just nowhere to be found on my computer, and the other found in my iTunes movie folder but completely bastardized and unviewable).
What am I doing wrong?   Is there a better ripping program (preferably free) that I should be using?

    camirv,
If you are attempting to rip commercial DVD's this is considered illegal and per the Terms of Use we all agreed to we cannot discuss it on this forum. However there are numerous articles on how to use Handbrake. You can also find lot's of "how to" videos on YouTube. One article is:

  • Front Row and Ripped DVDs

... HandBrake to rip DVD's onto my MacBook
It does but it messes up the video. That is, no matter what quality setting you set (I tried it all), you end up with something that looks more like some old, worn out VHS tape than the source DVD. It also looks like iTunes can't handle more than 2 audio channels for playback. It makes me wonder about the new Apple TV. Would it also be limited to lousy video and 2-channel audio?

  • Hi, im tinkering with mpeg streamclip and its giving me problems because it won't open my ripped dvd files from my desktop. It keeps giving me the same message "no VOB files can be found". Can anyone help me, this doesn't make sense.

hi, im tinkering with mpeg streamclip and its giving me problems because it won't open my ripped dvd files from my desktop. It keeps giving me the same message "no VOB files can be found". Can anyone help me, this doesn't make sense. I also found online that you need Apple Mpeg-2 playback component in order to use mpeg streamclip. Even though I have OS X Lion, should I download the add-on?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Ripping DVDs to iPhone

I have just read a couple of posts where some people are getting on their high horse about the fact that ripping DVDs is illegal in the US and therefore cannot be discussed on these forums.
I would like to remind everybody that these forums are available world-wide and that ripping DVDs for your own viewing pleasure is not illegal everywhere in the world.
    My American cousins, chill out!
Do you think that it is right for the USA to impose it's laws upon the rest of us? I do not, as we did not have the opportunity to vote upon this matter, nor did we vote for the lawmakers who made such a preposterous law. Do not forget, you guys tipped all our tea in the harbour to fight such injustices!

Sorry, but Apple explicitly prohibits discussions about ripping DVDs here in their forums:
"Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store."
Though the forums are read by people world-wide, the content is governed by US law and the US courts have in some cases ruled that even posting about breaking copy protection is a violation of the law. So while US law cannot and should not apply to you, it does apply to these forums. And regardless, it's Apple's system and they can make whatever rules they want.
The bottom line: discussions about ripping DVDs is not allowed here. If you can't or don't wish to abide by those terms, don't participate. There are plenty of other forums that either aren't based in the US or are (usually because they're not run by a major corporation that would get the content owners after them) willing to risk such discussions.

  • Ripping DVDs to iPod

Is ripping a DVD that I bought from the store (not iTunes store, a real store), onto my computer illegal? I did some Google-ing and ran across software I could hypothetically rip DVDs or TV shows onto iTunes and my iPod. If it were Legal, then it raises the question, "why in the world am I paying to buy TV shows from the iTunes store (that will never leave my desktop/iPod), when I could buy them at a real store, play them on a DVD player, Play them on iTunes, and Watch them on my iPod?! Not only that, but I can play the DVDs anywhere and actually SEE them and TOUCH them!!"

    No. It is illegal.

Irrelevant, It is still illegal, even if it was, multiple versions of the same basic product exist in multiple types of items.
And if it were Illegal, then screw the FCC and their rediculous rules. It's legal so long as I don't sell or distribute, right?
No, that is a horrible misconception. Breaking any sort of encryption is against the law.

  • Ripping DVDs for AppleTV?

Can I use a program like Popcorn to rip DVDs and convert them to some format that will stream to my AppleTV? If so, what format and settings would you recommend?
    Thanks.

Yes, the user agreement does not allow you talk about the process of ripping/circumventing DRM stuff - I understand and agree with that. The original question is about using an off-the-shelf product and there are practical and legal applications for it.
I'm going to explain the process I would use if someone in my family created a DVD of their home movies with iDVD. This is completely legal for me to want to take that DVD and transfer it to my AppleTV.
    1) Insert Family DVD into computer.
    2) Use something like Popcorn to extract the contents to files on computer.
    3) Use something like Handbrake to convert the movies into AppleTV MP4s.
    4) Add the MP4 to my iTunes Library
    5) Sync to my AppleTV
This is a completely legal process to describe. The key thing to know here is that using a program like Handbrake allows you to convert what you pulled off the DVD to an MP4 file suitable for AppleTV.
    Good luck,
