ITunes runs but won't play music anymore

Since upgrading to 6.0.2 audio files no longer play at all (I don't hear any audio and the diamond in the progress bar does not move) in iTunes for Windows. I'll hit the PLAY button and it changes color, acknowledging I clicked on it, but it won't play. I've uninstalled, and reinstalled but the problem remains. I followed the help article that mentions compatability mode but it was useless. Does anyone have any suggestions or have seen this before?

Just one word of caution--in another thread a previous poster said your have to install standalone Quicktime 7.0.3 instead of the current version 7.0.4. I don't know if this is true--maybe you could search the forums for more posts on this subject. Or, if someone knows for sure they can add their 2 cents.

  • ITunes 7.4 won't play music videos

When I doubleclick on a music video, iTunes 7.4 won't play the video, only the music. Music videos where playing fine with prior versions of iTunes. No matter which option I choose in the Video Playback preferences, iTunes won't launch the video. Restarting iTunes didn't bring back music video playback either. Podcasts and Movies are playing just fine though.
    Any help ?
    Thanks

I had the same problem and I landed here - OS10.7, had iTunes 10.5.2 *thinking* it was playing - acts like it was?, shows pause icon - no audio, no actual playback.  ...Scrubber dot didn't move onPlay click. (And, dam, I was hungry for music!), but..  That's where I discovered it.  Of course, I had browser audio probs, too - YouTube, Hulu - and Skype - any app output audio was affected...
I struggled with this for at least a day!  Frustrated, I took out my other OS10 boot drives and tried troubleshooting...  No dice.  I halted CoreAudioD (whew) out of desperation...  I checked my audio lines..  Then I remembered I installed a trial of ProTools with an Avid audio driver (maybe looking for Digi-approved devices) at around the time of trouble.
My SysPref audio panel was showing only Avid's device - no line in, no ext spkr..  So, I ran the ProTools uninstaller to try that. That's where EVERYTHING went back to absolutely normal! (After the restart).  SysPref Audio panel shows all!  I selected LineOut (for me), and I got it.
iTunes and other audio-service-consuming apps suddenly didn't take 4 minutes to launch!, and my Lion install was like I first had it.  ProTools has a dedicated uninstaller - install that clean.  If you have a PT install that works, check the iLok config - my iLok is active and attached, but not for PT 10.  Maybe it's avid device->CoreAudio, may it's due to the PT trial???... Whatever it was, for me, the problem lied there.
Hope that helps any of you guys.  Good luck and thanks for the direction, bros..

  • ITunes used to be fine, but won't play anything anymore

I had opted not to update to 7.5 until today. When I updated to iTunes ver. 7.3, the update created a "dead" duplicate for every mp3 that I had imported. I decided I did not need that hassle again, if it could be avoided.
Today, I noticed that none of my files would play in iTunes. There was no error message. When I select a track to play, the time remaining bar does not even start to move. I can select pause and then select play, but the tracks never start to play.
As a result of this new glitch, I updated to 7.5. The glitch has remained after a successful install. There is no error message, and iTunes is not locking up or "freezing." It just won't play a single track (I have tried tracks that are residing on my external HD, as well as those residing on my internal HD and none of the tracks play).
    Please help.
    Thanks,

  • ITunes 10.5 won't play music off NAS, 9.2 did.

Keep music on NAS drive so can be shared by 5 other users, the NAS does support iTunes. After upgrade to 10.5, iTunes won't play from the NAS. The drive does appear in the left hand column, but new library screen opens just briefly then closes. Same for both PCs and Macs. 10.5 working on each computer's own library.  What changed in 10.5? fixes?

Nearly all NAS devices use Firefly as an iTunes 'server'. Firefly is based on the mt-daapd code. Both Firefly and mt-daapd are effectively discontinued and unsupported. While Firefly does not and never has supported newer technologies like the Apple Remote app for iPhones and also never supported connecting to an Apple TV2, it did work for basic use via iTunes for Mac or Windows.
Apple have unfortunately been tweaking the daap protocol in iTunes and as a result have now several times broken compatibility with Firefly.
The ideal solution would be for all the NAS makers to dump Firefly since it is well behind the times, and switch to an alternative open-source package called forked-daap which does work with Apple Remote and Apple TV2.
I can say that NetGear have now issued a patch for Firefly running on their ReadyNAS boxes so it once again can limp along and work with iTunes 10.5. This particular occasions cause of the problem in iTunes 10.5 has been discovered and how to resolve it (clearly since NetGear have already fixed theirs) so it should not be too long before QNAP and the others catch up.
In the long run it would still be better if they all switched to forked-daap.

  • I tunes won't play a song on my Windows 8 computer.   Plays videos but won't play music.

Itunes will not play music on my HP laptop.  I have uninstalle and reinstalled but no success.  Plays videos but not music.

Almost certainly a damaged track, then.
Delete the current copy of the track from your iTunes library, and reimport a fresh copy from the CD. Does that one play properly?

  • Itunes downloaded but won't play

I purchased 4 songs. I previewed all of them, my speakers are working, but I can't hear them in itunes and they won't let me download them to my ipod, it's the 5th generation black one

Hello Hannah and anyone else who has this problem. I had the same issue and it was very annoying, because I was also told it was an authorization issue. So I deauthorized and reauthorized multiple times, restarted my computer, tried to play in SD instead of HD, set the settings to 32bit and all that.  Sadly but fortunately it was just a small issue. Go to Finder, click on go to folder and type "/Users/Shared/SC Info"
Make sure you change the folder view to column view. You can do this by clicking the 3rd tab that looks like 4 rectangles side by side on the menu bar of that window.  You will see a folder called SC Info.  Trash that and restart your computer.  Then... Deathorize and Re-Authorize your itunes and you will be good to go.
    Here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1389?viewlocale=en_US
The link might look unrelated to the issue, because it does not specifically come up when Googling or searching support for this error.
BTW AppleCare gave me this information.  They were awesome because they continued to call me and update me on their efforts to solve the issue.  The engineers ultimately figured it out and the customer care person called me and walked me through it.
I hope this works for you all.

  • ITunes 7.2 won't play music from my iPod.

I just installed itunes 7.2 today, and plugged in my ipod. However, it just showed the info about my ipod (gigs available, name of it, ect.) but won't recognize the songs! Help! When i try to uncheck the manually manage music box, it tells me that all my songs on my ipod will be replaced by my library. I really don't want this to happen since I have over 5 gigs on my ipod.

Click on the chevron (the little triangle) to the left of the iPod icon This will display the various icons for the iPod itself, Music, Movies, TV Shows and Playlists. Click on Music and you'll see the traditional song view and what's on your iPod.

  • After Yosemite update, iTunes recognizes but won't play songs

    Hey guys,
I updated to Yosemite today. Things are still groggy but generally good...except for iTunes 12.0.1.26
The library loads and can find my songs but they won't play. I've tried several different methods to play tracks but nothing appears to happening. It goes into a play state at 0:00 in the song but won't advance.
I don't see mention so far of other users struggling, but I hope you can help.
    iMac 24-inch Early 2009 model.

I called Apple Care. The tech said the problem was not common and the symptoms seemed to require a PRAM reset. So that's what we did.
To do the PRAM Rest, on reboot, hold:
    ⌘ + ⌥ + P + R
The computer will do its startup chime twice...like its rebooting each time. After that, it took a little extra time to reboot and then worked smoothly.
I did still have a few weird anomalies...
1 - Airplay in iTunes defaulted on...I had to turn it back off
2 - Airplay was selected as the default in System Settings too...
I had to turn off Airplay in iTunes and select Headphone out in System Settings > Sound but now everything seems to be in order.

  • My iphone won't charge and won't play music anymore. I have tried reseting it and switching it off. Have tried 3 different chargeres and even a car charger. Does anyone know what could be wrong and how I can fix it?

I have an iPhone 4 not quite 2 years old. 2 nights ago my iPhone was on its charger and it kept vibrating as if it was being disconnected and re-connected from the charger. When I looked at it had an "error" message but now I don't know what that was as it was 3am and I was half asleep. I just diconnected the charger and the battery read fully charged.
The my volume wouldn't go up or down. The box with "ringer" in it came up but no bars at the bottom to show the volume is increasing or decreasing. It would not play music out of the speakers either even though the screen showed it was playing and it would not work in our dock/speaker unless I used bluetooth and even then, if we touched the volume button on the dock it would switch off.
I tried a "hard" reset 3 times and tried switching it off and on 3 times with no success.
I tried 3 different chargers including a car charger, plus the speaker dock with no success.
It is now out of battery and I cannot charge it.
The iPhone also would not back anything up prior to the battery going flat.
I just need to know if it is fixable or do I need to start looking for a new phone?

  • ITunes Opens, But Won't Play/iTunes Has Detected A Problem With Audio

iTunes 7.4.3 and XP Pro on Dell laptop. The application opens, but no song plays. It appears at the top, but stays at zero. It keeps saying, " iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration." When in control panel, it says there is no audio device. Already checked it as default player. Tried repairing and nothing. Is it a driver? The last time I installed itunes on a pc, about 6 months ago, it worked fine. Maybe try an older version? Any help is appreciated.

  • SATA DVDrom copies files, but won't play music

I installed a new SATA DVD/CD-rom.  I'm using Gnome3.  When I insert an audio disk, it shows up in the file nautilus ( although I don't see where it mounts?) If I try to play the songs through VLC, or anything else, the sound is very soft and only parts of the music.  Sounds like white noise with a little music in the background.  I CAN drag the individual songs to my computer then play them fine.  So the problem is in playing music directly from the CD player.
    Where do I start ?
    Thanks

  • ITunes won't play music anymore from iTunes Match

In February I purchased the iTunes Match service and uploaded about 2000 songs to it.  Some purchased directly from iTunes over the years and some ripped from my CD collections.   After verifying that it works fine, I deleted the ~250GB of space that they took on my older MacBook Pro to make space for other things.
A couple of weeks ago I got my new MacBook Pro Retina (great!) and I've started to use iTunes on it.  I've added it to my Apple ID account and "authorized" it inside iTunes and expected to continue and use it to listen to music and all.
I was able to see all my music listed clearly and also all my genious mixes but nothing happens with I try to Play anything.   No message and no complaint, simply silence.   If I purchase and download a new song, I can play it, but nothing from the cloud!
I tried to "Update iTunes Match" and still nothing happens and I can't play a thing.
I tried to "Turn Off iTunes Match" and then turned it back on.  The entire list disappeared on me and after a long wait, I don't see it coming back... I'm out of the country right now and I see this small note at the bottom of the Music section of iTunes saying that "Music is available in the iTunes Store in select countries".    I'm using the US store and can certainly purchase music and movieds but the iTunes Match stopped working on me.

Well, after another restart of iTunes, my list of 2000 songs magically appeared and I can now play it.
So, this seemed to be a glitch that amended itself.

  • Songs in iTunes Matched but Won't Play... Sort Of...

I signed up for iTunes Match because I wanted to move my library of songs off my computer to save space and I was intrigued by the idea of being able to sync with the library from my iPad or even when I'm overseas. Sometimes it works well enough that I'm happy, but most of the time it's a pain in my butt. The biggest problem I am having is a syncing problem that happens anytime I sign out of the iTunes store...
Even though my library says "matched" or "uploaded", if I have my iTunes set to "shuffle" it will constantly stop when it changes songs. It will say the song can't be located, even if it's status is "matched" or whatever. If I double click the song, it will tell me it cannot locate it, and then ask me if I would like to find the file. If I say yes it will bring up my computer's directory, but if I say no, it will play the song! As long as I have played that song once, it will no longer  have any trouble finding that song. Sounds like an easy fix, except that I have over 5,000 songs and I don't have time to go in and double click each song and tell each error message NOT to locate the song. If iTunes can't locate a song, it doesn't just skip the song, the error message haults everything. I often work with music playing and I find myself spending more time trying to fix iTunes than working!
Today I logged out of iTunes Store to sign on to a second account (different country) and when that happened suddenly all the songs in my library needed to be re-added through the method mentioned above. I had finally gotten about 2,000 songs to read and now I have to do it all over again...
Songs purchased in the iTunes store do not have this problem. Yes, I have turned on iTunes Match.
Do I have to have songs on my hard drive for them to automatically play through iTunes Match? Because that sounds like it defeats the purpose a little...
Any info would be much appreciated. If I can't get this fixed, I doubt I'll be subscribing to iTunes Match again. Sounded like a great idea, but I'm having a lot of trouble with it just playing what I've matched or uploaded without me telling it to.

I moved all my music files to an external hard disk as a second backup. This was a year ago, so my memory is fuzzy, but I remember when I manually sent albums to iCloud to get matched I ended up with two copies of the songs, and I deleted the non-iCloud copies through iTunes. Not sure if that makes much sense, but basically it was half and half for deletion methods.
If I delete all the songs just through iTunes, will they show up again as their matched copies through iCloud if I turn off and on iTunes Match?
