Itunes runs in backround- won't shut down/open up
I am having to turn off my Norton Antivirus personal firewall in order to run Itunes. If I forget, it won't open up, but runs in backround forever, and won't let computer shut down normally. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions?

HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
Thank you everyone!!I have this question too.

Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. Can someone suggest something please.
Thanks.Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime

Imac running 10.7.3 won't shut down
Hi,
I have a new imac 3.4ghz - i7 with 16gbs ram that won't shut down unless I hold in the power button. Any idea what may be causing the issue. I checked the Console logs but that did not give me any indication of what might be hanging it up. I also, have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and it has no trouble powering down.
I am running AVID Symphony which is not qualified for 10.7.4 yet so I am not going to do the update yet.

Firefox won't shut down properly. I am running 3.6.8 on a Mac and usually I have to force quit to get it to shut down. This has only begun recently. If I knew how to roll back to a previous version I would and save you the trouble, but alas, I do not.
I'm having this same problem. I am going uninstall Firefox and install Google Chrome. This is ridiculous that there is NO solution Mozilla can provide us! I can't shutdown my Mac because Firefox won't shutdown. I got a script error message, tried to STOP or CONTINUE To no avail.

ITunes won't shut down - but only after syncing
I ran into an odd problem and found a workaround, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone else runs into this. In searching, I couldn't find anything like it:
The details: Running iTunes 7.5 on a freshly installed copy of XP. Have two iPods -- a Touch, and an iPod video.
The problem: If I open and close iTunes without connecting an iPod, everything is fine. However, if I connect either iPod and allow it to sync, iTunes will continue to run even after it's shut down. It starts hogging as much CPU time as it can get, which slows the system to a crawl -- and causes an error message when I try to restart the machine.
The solution: I found I could eliminate this problem if after syncing, I went into the Windows Task Manager and killed the "SyncServer.exe" process. So just for yuks, I found this file and moved it from its current location so that it would never load. I thought iTunes would balk at this, but it didn't -- both iPods still sync, and the above problem no longer occurs.
Surely there's got to be some penalty for killing this file, but I haven't run into any problems ... yet. Has anyone else been bit by this issue?

MacBook Pro won't shut down since itunes 7
Since installing iTunes 7 on my MBPro Intel Core Duo with OSX 10.6.8, once I open iTunes, iTunes freezes and requires a forced quit. Then, my MBPro won't shut down, it hangs at the end and requires a forced shutdown with the power button. Any suggestions appreciated.
You can force quit by clicking on the Apple logo in the upper left:
Then selecting the app in the window that comes up and hitting "Force Quit" -
No Keyboard Shortcuts & Won't Shut Down
I've been using Leopard since it came out and every once in a while I'll come across a time where none of my keyboard shortcuts won't work. For example command+tab doesn't work to switch between applications, control+arrow key doesn't work to change spaces, etc.
Also, when this happens, the computer won't shut down. Clicking "Shut Down" will remove the top menu panel, but then it just sits there...forever...
I was hoping the latest update would fix this problem but it hasn't. I'm not running Quicksilver as some other posts have mentioned. I'm using both Camino & Safari for web browsers, iTunes, and EyeTV...that's it...
Has anyone else seen this or have any fixes? I can't seem to find a bug report on it either. Thanks.Ok, I think I found more information here and was hoping someone could confirm. I have a Windows share that I mount to the Mac via SMB. If I shut down the Windows PC while the drive is still mounted on the Mac, I experience these problems. Particularly the not being able to shut down part.
If someone else could try this I'd appreciate it! -
My macbook pro won't shut down, restart or log off
it's a month old. was behaving fine until about a week ago when it wouldn't shut down because itunes kept restarting itself whenever i quit. realised it was because of my alarm clock widget, which i've now removed. so the itunes is sorted, BUT, my mac still won't shut down.
what can i do? someone told me to download onyx but i haven't a clue what to do with it?Don't upgrade to Snow Leopard in the hope that it will eliminate any preexisting problems on your MBP — it almost certainly won't, and you may have other problems as well (e.g., incompatible applications and startup items). Solve the problem first, then perform the upgrade.
If you Safe Boot the computer, will it shut down normally afterward? If so, disable all third-party startup items (System Preferences > Accounts > select your account and click the Startup Items tab), boot normally, and test again. If you can still shut down normally, one of the startup items is at fault. Re-enable them one at a time, testing after each addition, until you determine which one is causing the problem.
There are also applications that can run in the background and don't show up in the Force Quit dialog box — but they do appear in Activity Monitor when you instruct it to list Active Processes. Some can interfere with shutdown by refusing to quit when the Shut Down command is given. If the suggestion in the preceding paragraph yields no progress, let us know what processes are active on your computer when no applications are shown in the Force Quit dialog box. -
My MacBook Pro Won't Shut Down (Sometimes)
I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem as me, I have searched the discussions on here and on Google for solutions but can't seem to find any.
I have a MacBook Pro (early 2011 model) - I have upgraded it to OS X Mountain Lion recently, but the problems with shutting down occured before that. When I open iTunes on my MacBook, then quit it and shut down the system, it won't seem to do it. It will bring up a grey screen with a spinning loading wheel and stay on that until the battery runs out or I hold down the power button and force a shut down.
I have tested this without opening iTunes on my Mac and it shuts down perfectly, and very quickly also. Has anyone found a solution to this or can suggest what I can do to resolve it? I can't get to an Apple store until September.
Thank you.Perform SMC and PRAM resets and see if that helps the situation:

I got a iPod nano about a month ago, and installed iTunes on my PC. All is well so far... until I try to shut down. The computer restarts instead. After installing and unistalling iTunes from the cd and apple.com nothing changes. I've tried shuting down all iPod and iTunes related processes in the task manager before shutting down, but the result is always the same.
Called Apple help, and they've never heard of this problem.
Can someone help? I like iTunes to much to give up on this one.

Trondheim, NorwayWhat makes you think iTunes is causing this?
Are you getting some kind of error? Have you looked in your application & system event viewer logs?
I mean, if you've shut down iTunes & iPod processes in task manager, and Windows still won't shut down.....why would iTunes be causing this? -

Has anyone seen this before? All help greatly appreciated!Hi Sebastian,
Thank you for your quick reply. Here's what I tried:
1. reset the install as you suggested, and tried running root.sh again. The exact same thing happened.
2. restored to an openfiler snapshots that were taken right before the failed upgrade. Increased memory on both VMs to 1280M as you suggested. Rebooted the virtual environment and ran the installation again. This time, the root.sh script froze my environment - not enough memory to support this.
3. restored the openfiler snapshots again. Increased memory on one node (odbn1) to 1500M. Ran the install for a single node cluster. It got past this error.
Thank you!!!
Also, thanks for the tip on the ntp.init file. That did eliminate the error for ntpd not running during the installation. -
Macbook won't shut down unless i force quit!

It does occasionally shut down successfully ...... but today it shut down fine.... 1st time i tried it for well over a week! But then refused to start up! 1st time it's done this!! it took over two hours to convince it to start!!! Any thoughts would be massively appreciated ..... apple care run out and ZERO funds to have fixed !!! : (( v sad as i love my mac and can't do without it!!!shelbell508 wrote:

Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw. -
Mac Pro suddenly takes very long to boot and won't shut down... just spins
My Mac started taking very long to boot up... maybe 10 minutes before the icon bar becomes available.
Also, it won't shut down... it just spins. I've waited 30 minutes with no results.
Any help would be greatly appreciatedCBuss,
The long boot cycle points to preference corruption. And not the kind that can be corrected with re-boots etc., Check Hard Drive>Library>Preferences to see if the listings make "visual" sense. If there are a lot of letters with circles over them and numbers interspersed, you are skating out on thin ice.
Back up everything now, then do a clean install of your current OS. Do not to an "archive". That will probably archive the corruption as well. Go up to Snow Leopard if you can. Add your data back manually as well. If you keep going with these lingering start ups, you will shortly get the "?" at startup instead of the Apple/ Chime and the long, expensive, recovery (by somebody else) will begin.
As for the 'shut down" issue.. I am still in the dark. Something is still "running" and canceling the shut down cycle.
Cheers
