ITunes saves dropped songs to wrong folder

Because of the size of my MP3 ad WAV music collection, I store my song files onto a SAS RAID array instead in my user's Music folder.  The path to this folder ls "/Volumes/Audio Storage/Music".  This has worked fine for quite a while, but I've built a new Lion system for audio work and things have gotten odd.
My starting settings in the Advanced section are both Keep iTunes folder organizaed and Copy files off.  I then drag and drop the folder into the Music panel of iTunes and after a few minutes, all 50K± songs are imported.  I then go into preferences and eable Copy Songs for any new music.  Last night I imported Fr/action's entire library and the import succeeded, but this morning I noticed that the songs had been imported int9o a new Music folder within my specified folder - "/Volumes/Audio Storage/Music/Music".  While doesn't present a problem with playback or logically managing the collection, I'm curious as to why iTunes added the new folder instead of just copying the new group / album / song hierarchy into the defined folder?
Is this a bug, or am I missing some setting?

  • ITunes wont put songs into correct folder!!

When I import songs into iTunes, it stores the songs under the wrong folder in "My Music". There is two folders that somehow got mixed up, "iTunes Library" (which is where I would like the songs to go into) and "iTunes Music" (which i dont want to even exist!). Can someone please help me fix this, it is really annoying to do all this manually.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Can you post a screenshot of your iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab?
Because what you typed sounds normal. The library is a file named iTunes Library.itl and it just holds pointers/references to the actual files in the folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

  • ITunes match matched songs to wrong language

iTunes match has matched some of my Indian songs to wrong language. Many of the big budget movies these days are releasing their movies in several languages at the same time and making them all available to purchase from iTunes store. When I ripped a CD I already had, iTunes matched some of them into a wrong language. Name of the song is still showing original, but the actual track is in wrong language.
Is there any way I can force iTunes to re-match?

Songs that are ineligible because they are too low of a bit rate can be converted to a higher bit rate by right-clicking and creating either an AAC or MP3 version.  Mind you, the quality will NOT improve; in fact it could degrade a little, but the songs will indeed be re-encoded at a higher bit rate.  Once iTunes recognizes that they are encoded at a high enough bit rate, they will no longer be ineligible. And they greatest part is, if they are matched by iTunes, then not only will you have them in the iCloud, but you will be able to delete the original song files (do not select the option to delete them from iCloud) and re-download the matched songs from iTunes in far greater quality.

  • ITunes not displayng songs after moving folder

I moved all my songs from my C drive to a new external drive, which is G. I created the folder iTunes\iTunes Music and copies all my music from where it was to the new location and then deleted it from the C. I confirmed that all my music is there at the new location, as when I click on the new iTunes Music folder, it shows folders named with all the songs I had, and I confirmed that the G drive is using up the same space as iTunes Music took in the C drive.
In iTunes, in Edit\Preferences\Advanced, it shows in the iTunes music folder location G:\iTunes\iTunes Music, which is where I changed it.
When I load itunes, there are no songs displayed. Why?
Did I do something wrong? I'm stumped.
I rebooted my pc and loaded iTunes, but no difference.

    Hi,
Try posting in the iTunes for Windows forum - someone more likely to know what the issue is will be lurking there

  • ITunes backing up to the wrong folder

To save space on my computer I moved my iTunes folder to an external drive.
I accidently connected my iPad to iTunes without the external drive plugged in.
iTunes now keeps trying to create a new folder on my computer even when my external drive is plugged in. How do I get it to find the correct folder?

While the drive is plugged in, close iTunes.  Then reopen iTunes by holding the option key down while clicking its icon.  You will be given a "Choose Library" choice.

  • Problem with songs in wrong folder

    Hello,
Please bear with me. I am not very good with the technical aspects of computers and with iTunes. I bought an iPhone 3GS (8GB) last week. I tried to sync it today. The apps that I had d/l from the app store on iTunes tranferred fine into the iPhone but the music and podcasts did not. I also had taken the micro SD card with a few songs in it and copied them into my PC. I then turned on itunes and noticed there were exclamation points next to the songs I transferred from the micro SD card. Long story short I tried to get the exclamation points off, I somehow moved ALL my songs from the files they were in to another one on my PC and now NONE of the songs I have in my library will play, they all have ! when I click on them, they all say to locate them and then a box pops up with the folders on my desktop. I also don't want to sync all the songs I have onto the iPhone and I know I can make playlists and then pick and choose from there. But I cna't make any playlists since all the songs are in another folder, when I highlight them in iTunes to make a playlist it won't do it.
I just want all my songs to play without any hassle and be able to transfer over to my iPhone. Can someone please help me. thank you
    Mary

+I also had taken the micro SD card with a few songs in it and copied them into my PC. I then turned on itunes and noticed there were exclamation points next to the songs I transferred from the micro SD card.+
This happens a lot. iTunes was looking for them to still be on the micro SD card, but it was gone from the PC.
The fix is to go to itunes preferences > advanced tab. Put a checkbox in "Copy files to itunes Media folder when adding...."
Transfer the files again, so they will get copied to your PC's hard drive and not stay on the micro SD card.
On to the 2nd problem, moving files around in Windows Explorer. iTunes will lose track of them, as you discovered. So then you changed the itunes media folder to the new location? That's great, except that only affects FUTURE additions.
Can you put them back in the original place? Undo the rename in WIndows Explorer, in other words.

  • ITunes saves everything to the wrong location

In my preferences I have it set so that everything saves to my music library, however, everything gets saved to my photo's library. Multiple times, I have closed iTunes and deleted everything in the iTunes folder in my folder library, but that accomplishes nothing. All of my music, movies, apps, etc, are in my music folder but when I redownload everything, iTunes puts it into the folder it keeps making in my photo library.

Assuming you were using iTunes' default settings it would put everything you need in the iTunes folder in your Music folder.  iTunes has a central controlling file called library.itl which tells the application where your media files are actually located.  Then there's a bunch of other files and folders that do things such as organize artwork, Genius, etc.  Everything is in the one folder.  The advantage of this is if you want to move it to a different drive all you have to do is copy the entire folder in one go, then restart iTunes as directed earlier.
If you change the preferences for iTunes it doesn't move the whole collection.  It tells iTunes to store media in the location indicated in the future. You end up with old media stored on the original drive, new media on the other drive, and the other files and folders also on the main drive.  This makes it much harder to re-organize because it requires multiple careful steps where you really know what you are doing.
Consolidating copies (not moves) files from wherever they are located to the location indicated in the iTunes media setting location preference.
If you still have everything intact on the main drive I would just back up and do the simple library move indicated earlier.  I'm not sure where things are right now.
A tip.  It is suggested you not use for general file storage the same drive to which Time Machine backs up. There can be issues with competing space.  Second, if this is your backup drive and you are using it for media overflow, where is your backup of your media?  I know people have problems because notebooks are so popular, but they really don't have the capacity for modern media and the only real solution is to have multiple external drives.

  • Upgraded iTunes and  all songs in music folder are duplicated

Recently upgraded to iTunes 10.1.1.4 and all songs are now duplicated. Any idea why this happened and is there an easy way to get rid of the duplicates? When I opened iTunes after the upgrade, it acted as though it was a new installation-asking questions about finding song files.

Something went wrong with the upgrade. itunes should not have asked about finding files on an upgrade.
For duplicates in the itunes program, sort by Date Added. Figure out which group is valid - either the oldest or newest, and delete whichever group that isn't needed. You can highlight the first and then hold the shift key to highlight the last, so you can delete the group all at once.
For duplicate on your hard drive, use Windows Explorer and Date Created/Modified the same way.

  • Moved to a new computer, but iTunes looking for songs at old folder locatio

My old pc crashed, so I copied all the songs from my old hard drive to my new machine. Now my iTunes shows 2 versions of each song and 1 version says it can't find the file. Does anyone know an easy way to have iTunes delete all the songs it can't find.

The best way to migrate an iTunes library to a new computer is simply to copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer into the <User's Music> folder of the new one, then install iTunes. It only becomes more complicated if the media folder is split out of its usual place as a subfolder of the iTunes library folder, in which case the media folder needs to be placed on the same path that it had previously or the library needs to be made portable before it is copied across.
If whatever your brother has done leaves the iTunes Media folders looking the same on both machines then copying over the library files and Album Artwork folder from the old iTunes folder to the new one should fix things, otherwise just do the whole process over.

  • Itunes saves my songs in a new file that is not the default setting

My settings for downloading purchased music from itunes is c:\pop\music.
Since a few months itunes generates a 2nd file named "music" within the existing file "music" and downloads all new songs in there. (It just happens, I surely didn´t tamper with the settings.)
So everytime I buy music from the itunes store the new files are now saved under c:\pop\music\music.
Also my ipod now only synchronizes the new files as long as they´re in c:\pop\music\music and not under c:\pop\music where I want to have them to be able to combine them with the others.
I checked under "Information" of the new songs and for each song the setting for the place where it´s (supposed to be) saved under is still c:\pop\music. Also my default settings are still c:\pop\music.
So why does itunes create a new file?????
I can change almost every entry under "Information" but not the storage location.
I don´t know why this happened and how I can change this back. Can anyone help me here, please!

What im trying to say is, i purchased a imac after getting a new phone, which was on windows.
So i now need to sync it so i can enjoy all the easy pleasures of genius so on and so on
However not eveything made the shift over, so now my itunes on phone has songs from my old library, that due to whatever multiverse lays between mac and pc, are now not available on my new smarter and amazing mac.
So if i sync the phone i will lose my songs, yes which did cost me money!! Does anyone know a way to prevent this?
please bare in mind I am Mac simple, quite ******** really
    thank you in advance

  • Itunes not recognizing songs in Media Folder

I have my Itunes Media Folder on an external HD.
When I try to play some tracks in Itunes, they have the ( ! ) next to them. A dialogue comes up that says Itunes can't find them.
But I know they're right there on the external drive.
When I choose "locate" I can easily find them.
    But Itunes cannot.
    Help. Thanks!!!

It's very connected. And Itunes>preferences>advanced shows the drive and media folder.
I can play the tracks from the drive, in the finder.
Drive has same name as always, and folder structure is same as always. thanks. what could it be?

I have to search in pictures and re-open the correct folder to save into.
The photo also appears in the wrong folder and I have to delete it from there.
I have been using PS3 for years and this has just started happening for no reason.

  • Does any know what is the name of the folder where iTunes saves the iCloud cache like the songs being played, etc.?

Does any know what is the name of the folder where iTunes saves the iCloud cache like the songs being played, etc.?

    Checked:
when you add a song to iTunes, that song is copied to the itunes library folder (on your external drive) with all your other songs, so they are all in the same place, on that drive. you can then delete the song you added to itunes from wherever you added it, because it has been copied to the itunes folder.
    Unchecked:
the song is not copied to the itunes folder on the external drive. this means that once you add it to itunes, you must keep the song wherever you added it from, because itunes only remembers where it is located, and does not keep a copy in the itunes folder. moving this file will make the song unplayable in itunes.

  • ITunes moving songs to wrong iTunes Library Folder

    Hi All,
Just upgraded to 10.1. I have my iTunes library on an external drive. Upon upgrade to 10.1 iTunes created a new iTunes Library Folder on my internal drive (/iTunes Library/Music) and moved 103 of my 8000 songs into that new folder. I've never had or needed that folder before. I have iTunes set to both manage my library and copy songs to my iTunes music folder (correctly points to the external drive in iTunes). So every time I try to add these 103 songs to iTunes, they do not get copied to my external drive library folder, they get re-copied into the internal disk folder that iTunes creates and iTunes will not play them (get the exclamation point). Even if I try to trash the internal iTunes Library folder, iTunes just automatically recreates it and adds those same 103 songs back in. If I copy/paste the songs into the external library and add them to iTunes - iTunes moves them back to the internal drive and will not play them! Some of the songs are purchased from iTunes, some are not. Only 1 song is DRM protected and some but not all songs are iTunes plus upgraded songs.
Anyone have any idea why iTunes might be behaving this way only with those 103 songs?
    Thanks!
