ITunes says it needs to install rosetta

All of the sudden, iTunes won't launch and Software Update says it needs to install Rosetta.  Never had to do that before.  Anyone know what's going on?  Could this be an issue created from the most recent update?

Instead of trying to update iTunes +from within iTunes+, go to Apple's page where you can download the iTunes 8.2.1 installation file -- save the file, don't run it direct from the download. Once downloaded to your computer, then run the installation file.
If that does not fix the problem, then remove the following software from your computer (you won't lose your music): iTunes, Quicktime, and something called "Apple Mobile Device Services". Once you remove those programs, then run the iTunes installer file (from above) again. That will install all three of these programs and should fix your problem.

  • HT3669 Unable to run the HP All-in-One Installer for LJ 3055 -- Error message says I need to install Rosetta

I have an HP LJ 3055 All-in-One.  Previously, I haven't used it connected to my Mac (i.e., only in 'standalone' mode).  I now want to use the unit's software for faxing and scanning purposes.
However, when I insert the CD that includes the HP All-in-One Installer, I see an error message saying:
"To open LaserJet AIO Installer, you need to install Rosetta.  Would you like to install it now?"
I assume this is related to the CD's having been produced contemporaneous with Tiger, not Snow Leopard -- though I have no idea why it's prompting about Rosetta, since this is a Macintosh installation CD.
Can anyone inform me what I need to do to install the software (i.e., to run the installer) under Snow Leopard, so that I can access the All-in-One's functions via the Mac?
    Thanks.  Replies appreciated.

Responding to two of your posts here...
Thanks.  It wasn't (and still isn't) clear to my why I was getting the prompt about installing Rosetta.  While using the unit with Tiger, I never saw anything about a need for Rosetta (i.e., nothing indicating that any of the software on the CD was pre-Intel).
Printing continues to be available from the Mac but nothing else is supported via the computer.  Scan, fax and copy are available only directly from the unit.
Funny that this can happen with a unit that continues to work perfectly well, without a hitch.  You'd think that OS upgrades would, if anything, enhance software control of a unit -- rather than eliminate it completely.
★ Is there any reason to think that going the 'Rosetta' route would restore the lost functionality (in 10.6.8)? ★
    Thanks.
The reason you were getting the prompt about installing Rosetta now is because Rosetta was automatically installed on OS X 'Tiger' 10.4 and 'Leopard' 10.5. HP didn't mention it as a requirement, because at the time, it was already there and invisible.
Rosetta became an optional install on OS X 10.6, because (I presume) the number of programs and devices still using pre-2006 PowerPC code and thus needing Rosetta, was in steady decline. Why add extra clutter to (this is my guesstimate) 85% of the Macs running Snow Leopard that DO NOT need Rosetta?
In my opinion, it cannot hurt to install Rosetta now.
Only programs (your HP drivers) that REQUIRE Rosetta will even attempt to use it.
The scan fax and copy functions don't work now with Snow Leopard, so at worst, they still won't work.
You can always delete Rosetta again if you need the disk space.

If I correctly understand how Rosetta worked, it created an emulation environment in which certain software (including 'multifunction printer' drivers) would work, the implication being that these software products were not specifically written for the Mac OS.
However, wouldn't those drivers still also have to be supported by the Mac's currently-installed OS in order to work -- as they were in Tiger and Leopard (but are not in Snow Leopard)?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The music is stored on the iTunes library. This library isn't deleted when you uninstall or reinstall iTunes, so you will keep everything. Anyway, it's better to make a backup of the library. Apart from that, you can download the purchased music as many times as you want

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • TS3772 I've installed Quicktime but Itunes still says I need to install it, what should I do?

Yeah I've installed Quicktime onto my laptop but when i go onto Itunes and try to watch a video it says I need to install Quicktime what do I do?

First could you confirm your Windows version, XP, vista,or 7.
Could you confirm that your Quicktime works OK and that you have the latest version.
If so you may have a variation of an old error we used to see.
It is most common on laptops that are used at work and connect to a work network but it can occur in other situations.
If this is the problem you will need to edit the %Path% variable, but we need to know if this is necessary first.
In order to check this, type
    cmd
into your search box and click cmd under Programs.
For XP use the Run command to open cmd.
The black cmd window will open.
Next copy&paste the following into the cmd window and press return:
    echo %path% >documents\path.txt
I think for XP it will need to be
    echo %path% >"my documents\path.txt"
Unfortunately I don't have XP to check that this is correct.
If you can't get it to work, just type:
    echo %path%
And the path will appear on screen and you will have to work from that, but it is easer if you can do it the other way.
The first way will place the contents of the %path% variable in a text file called Path in (My) Documents.
You will need to check that each folder in the list actually exists.
In order to save time you can copy&paste each folder in the list into the address bar of Windows Explorer. You will get an error if the folder doesn't exist.
Make a note of any that don't exist and post back. Most commonly the thing you are looking for is a network location.
If you are having trouble with this you can paste the text file into your next post and I can take a look at it.

  • I just installed 10.2.2. When I tried to start iTunes, I got the message that Rosetta needed to be installed to open iTunes. It downloaded and installed Rosetta but iTunes will not open and it no longer has the iTunes icon. What do I do now?

I installed iTunes 10.2.2. When I tried to open it, I got the message that iTunes needs to install Rosetta to open. It then appeared to download and and install Rosetta. When I try to open iTunes, the icon bounces but iTunes does not open. The icon has also changed from the usual iTunes icon. What do I do now?

I have a 2010 MBP15 which I do not use as much as my pc. When I do, I check for updates and I believe I updated iTunes to 10.2.2 a week or so ago. Since I still use iTunes primarily on my pc, I didn't bother firing up the updated iTunes on the mac.
Last week, when I actually started iTunes on the mac, I got the message that Rosetta needed to be installed. Like abefighter I stalled. I surfed the net, read this thread to get some hints as to w** was going on.
When I checked the system profile in the mac, I think it showed PowerPC for 'kind.' Surfing the Internet I found out Rosetta was something needed to help applications work on PowerPCs. But wait, since this MBP is an Intel, why would or should it be asking me for some stone-age plug-in that was never mentioned in all the previous updates for iTunes until now? Fyi, the iTunes icon on the dock had changed to what I think is an AppleWorks icon.
So, I assumed that the update that resulted in my mac was corrupted. At first I scoured for 10.2.1, thinking that the last version was a dud, but in vain, nowhere to be found. I gave up and settled for a fresh 10.2.2. I did a casual delete, without touching any of the related personal preference files in my folder and it now which works fine. I'm glad I didn't jump to install Rosetta; I read elsewhere about someone who actually went through with the Rosetta install that resulted unhappily.
Unless the mac in question is a PowerPC, I would doubt the need for Rosetta installation.

PC with a 1GHz Intel or AMD processor and 512MB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 require the iTunes 64-bit installer
    400MB of available disk space
