The "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode, use iTunes to restore it" message keeps popping up over and over
First, in iTunes, launch Preferences and go to the Devices tab. Check the date and time of the last backup. If it is recent you can restore it. However, if you mean you have the photos back in your Camera Roll then the backup was already restored. To get your music and apps back it should just be necessary to click "Sync".

I did the restore and it cleared and reset the iPod but after it finished the same error came up. I tried this 3 times. Also it no longer shows up as a drine in My Computer.
if it's relentlessly doing that to you, it's plausible that the message is being caused by a Windows drive letter confusion. (that's consistent with the disappearance for My Computer, too.)

You restore the iPod via iTunes. Don't plug the iPod in. Open up iTunes and then plug it in and then try restoring, if it fails to restore a few times, keep trying. I do it on a daily basis, you're using an Apple product, remember...

I forgot my password and am trying to reset my ipod, but it won't work.It says that my ipod is in recovery mode and that I must restore it. I click ok, and then click on restore and update. Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

I did my 7.1.2 update via iTunes. Half way through it stopped working saying it does not detect my phone. Now my iPhone 5 is in recovery mode and hard resetting does not work for me. iTunes also will not detect my phone now
Thank you SO very much for posting this. I had the exact issue with my iPad Mini after the same upgrade. Hard reset failed, computer would not recognize iPad. I had read all the other instructions and nothing worked.... YOUR SOLUTION WORKED FOR ME - with a slight variation.
I followed your lead and connected my iPad Mini to another computer, fired up iTunes, it saw the iPad Mini in Restore Mode and allowed me to go into Restore (yes, it wiped all of the data but I have a back up on the other computer that would not see it after the failed update). It installed the latest iOS 7.1.2 as well. I then disconnected it from that computer, reconnected it to the computer that would not see it prior and it then saw it as a new iPad and allowed me to Restore my backup and now it's all good!
I detailed my steps only because you downloaded the previous version - 7.1.1 whereas I downloaded the latest version (7.1.2) and then restored my back up. -

my ipod & itunes are fully up-to-date with 4.2.1 for ipod and the itunes 11.0.1 and every app (ex facebook & ice cream jump says i need 4.3 version but when i click all updates say its all up to date.
