Itunes search question

Hi all,
I'm encountering a problem using the search field in new iTunes 12. Let's say I want to find the Title "Beat It" of "Michael Jackson" but I don't quite remember it exactly. I used to be able to put into the search field "Jackson beat" and I'd get suggestions in a little dropdown box right beneath the search field. Since iTunes 12 I don't get these suggestions anymore. I found them very handy. Is there a way to get them back?
Thanks
Jan

I still get the suggestions in iTunes 12. However, I noticed if I click on the drop down arrow next to the magnifying glass in the left side of the search field and deselect "Search Entire Library" then the suggestions are disabled too.

  • Command-line type itunes control - questions

    Hello,
I'm writing a little tool with Applescript to control iTunes via command-line type interface. I have few general questions, thanks in advance for any answers. First I'll explain my idea, questions at the end. (If wrong forum, please tell me where to go)
The goal: to control music with as less hassle as possible. I listen music all day, have dozens of gigabites of it, and find mouse/iTunes interface too troublesome. Moodkiller whilst reading a book, for example.
Tool is pop-up dialog, with a single text field. Write something and hit enter -> search phrase or command interpreted and sent to iTunes as Applescript -> iTunes acts, and a new dialog pops up, ready for next command. (Enter with no text quits app)
    Examples:
    "oasis wonderwall"
Searches iTunes library and finds Wonderwall of Oasis. Displays a pop-up list of search matches, in this case just one song. Hit enter -> iTunes plays it. (If more results, I get to choose song from list.)
I find this quicker than to activate iTunes search box with mouse, enter search string, activate results pane with several TAB:s etc...
    "trip-hop"
Searches an iTunes library, finding over two hundred "trip-hop" genre songs. This time just plays random song among results (thumb rule: if number of results > 100, behave that way, otherwise as above). Library continues playing from that point. Usually means you get to hear a lot of trip-hop. (could also make new trip-hop playlist)
    ">"
Command: skip to next song. ">>>" skips 3 songs at once, ">>>>" four songs etc
"<"+" increases three notches, "++" four etc.
Decrease volume, again "---" three notches etc.
    "play", "pause", "stop"
Basic player commands, you name it.
    "oasis wonderw >"
Searches song and adds it to end of current playlist (if more than one result, choose from list).
Other ideas too, but you propably got the point.
    My questions:
    1) Any applications currently doing this kind of job? With iTunes or other music players? (You can use Quicksilver for iTunes song searching, but I'm not certain if that's very handy or fast)
    2) Would you use this kind of tool, if it were good? (just a theoretical question) If yes, how would you like to control it?
    3) I have used Applescript's basic "display dialog" and "choose from list" commands, but would love more customized pop-ups (fancier song lists etc). Pointers to good scripting additions to accomplish this? Currently the entire tool is made with Applescript.
If this raises interest, I could post the tool somewhere. It's still very early draft, anyway.
    Cheers,
    O

    Hi CofeeBreak,
Thank you for your comment, but I was able to find the problem (didn't solve it yet): In the FM command line interface, calling a HEX file located in a folder with brackets in its name, such as "C:\hello_World(V1)\LabVIEW.hex" will not be recognized by the FM.exe, whereas "C:\hello_World_V1\LabVIEW.hex" will work just fine. In the Flash Magic GUI and Command Line Manual section on hex files there is no mention of that, my solution at the moment is to remove the brackets from folder names.
    Thanks

  • New itunes search function is terrible

The new itunes search function is really terrible, as a dj and listener with over 250GB of mp3s I find the new system to be extremely frustrating. I want to be able to type in a tag and sort my music hierarchically and I am no longer able to do this.
    Sad.

If you want to go back to iTunes 10 I am happy to show you the way.
I am happy to regard myself an expert now on how to downgrade iTunes 11 back to 10. Having found a straight forward and logical way of doing so I thought it my duty to share with others. I can't express what a relief it is to have version 10 back again. See the method below. Let me know how you got on.
You can jump to the method below but I feel I need to express my view on the experience I have had of using iTunes 11.
I have been a mac obsessed devoted fan all my life (I'm 46), never used a PC and got my first mac back in 1988. Until just the past few months I wouldn't hear anyone say anything derogatory about anything apple. However a few things are rocking my 'religious like' devotion. Most of all I have been dumfunded about issues of the recent iTunes evolution in version 11.
I am also obsessed with music, movies and music videos. It's not just a hobby - I am a DJ and Video DJ by proffesion. iTunes, since the very first release, has been the backbone to the way I organise and store all my digital media. I never had any need to seek an alterantive and have also enjoyed the intergration it provides with my iPhone and other things etc etc.
My libary is huge. I don't mean to brag but aside from my digital music collection of 40,000 + tracks, either purchassed from the iTunes store or imported from my CD colection, my music video collection is over 10,000. I am a proffeciant iTunes user and I often have reason to need to retag my files within iTunes or sometimes I use MetaX.
Until now I have never resisted installing any available apple updates and even feel some excitement in anticipation of improved features etc. iTunes version 11 has changed all that now. It is, without question, an inferior version to 10. Anyone who feels otherwize is probaly only using itunes in a basic way and for this reason I have always thought there was a market for a pro version of iTunes for people like me.
iTunes 11 simply doesn't work. I click to play a track, click again cos it hasn't started and click another time and only then do I get to hear the track play for the start three times. It takes ages to build links to external files, just as long as it takes to actually import them to the media folder. Tagging takes rediculous long the point yu would need to leave the job to be done over night. I could go on but you are probably reading this because you have aleady experienced your own issues concerning version 11.
Befoe following the method below, I tried to seek alternatives to iTunes all together. I briefly tried Double Twist and Song Bird amougst many other but it truth iTunes is better for my personal purposes.
The most dispointing thing about version 11 is the silence from Apple about the obvious problems. It is this specific fact that has agrivated me so much. Maybe I am romanticising, bt I can't help imagine that SJ would have never let version 11 go as far as actually being released.
Here are the Stages and Steps: For OS X only. (have no idea for PC users). Thank you to Bogoss on MacForums, whoever you are.
    Stage 1.
Note: Any changes you have made to your music files since you used last used version 10 will be lost but any purchasses you have made in the time since can be downloaded again if you can't find those purchasses in your media folder. If recently made playlists are of particular importance you could export the lists to somewhere for later.
    1. Back up your iTunes Folder(s) just incase
    2. Download these apps 1. AppZapper from http://appzapper.com (the free version will do). 2. Pacifist fromhttp://www.charlessoft.com.
    3. Download iTunes 10.7 (last version before 11). Check your download folder, it might still be there. You can also get it from : http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/0...iTunes10.7.dmg
    4. Using AppZapper simply uninstall itunes 11. Before you drag the iTunes icon from the Application folder to the window you will need to open the preferences of AppZapper and deselect the tick next to "Keep Apple applications safe"
    5. Open the 10.7 dmg file, you will see the pkg file(usally you would double click it to install), but now, this time drag it out somewhere, eg desktop.
    6. Open Pacifist
7 drag the pkg iTunes 10.7 file to pacifist and then click install from the menu bar
8, during installation, click replace everytime a window pops up.
    9. installation finished, iTunes 10.7 is back!
    10. Don't open it yet!!!!
    Stage 2.
See this video that explains the pocess here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXKZ2IBNsIA
    1. In FINDER - go to your iTunes Folder in the iTunes Folder.
    2. Within it, open the folder called Previous iTunes Libraries.
    3. Identify the most recent backup. It has the date at the end.
    4. Duplicate it. Move it to the desktop.
    5. Rename it as iTunes Library.itl. Basically remove the date from the file name.
    6. Go back to your iTunes Folder and rename the file there which is already named iTunes Library.itl to iTunes Library.itl.old.
    7. Now move the iTunes Library.itl file from your desktop to this location.
    8. Now open iTunes 10.7. If it can't find your iTunes library, select choose library and navigate the application to the new iTunes Library.itl file you created.
    9. Breath sigh of relief, you're done!
    10. Copy this and post it to help others. Only come back to me to say Thanks, not for more support.

  • ITunes search can't find my show by my keywords

I'm the maker of Machigai Podcast, which is available in iTunes. I use WordPress 3.4.2 and Blubrry PowerPress 4.0.4 to publish the show. I cannot figure out why iTunes cannot find my podcast when searching on any keywords, except "Machigai". It seems that iTunes is not finding the information I've entered in the "iTunes" tab of the Blubrry PowerPress Settings.
Looking at my feed itself in the browser, I see that, rather than displaying my iTunes program subtitle or summary, it instead shows the "tagline" from the WordPress general settings! Still, the text from the iTunes Program Summary does display in iTunes -- but an iTunes search for words that appear in that summary does NOT bring up my show, nor does a search for any of my "iTunes Program Keywords".
It's worth noting that much of this text is in Japanese. I had found with Feed Validator that there was an encoding problem with the feed, but I fixed that problem several days ago, and the search problem persists. (INCLUDING for Keywords that are IN ENGLISH)
I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?

I tried searching on your first keyword, 英会話 , and it brought up a large number of podcasts. Of course I don't know what this word is, but it appears to be a common one. Certainly the English keywords are going to appear in many podcasts so you are competing with them to appear in the results. (This is quite apart from the fact that the keyword search can be unreliable.)
In iTunes the 'itunes:subtitle' and 'itunes:summary' appear to be showing correctly. When you view the feed in a browser these tags, which are specific to iTunes, do not show - what shows is the 'description' tag and again this is showing as expected.
For reference, your feed is at http://www.machigai.com/wordpress/?feed=podcast - please when you have a question always post your iTunes Store page URL and that of your feed, to save detective work.

  • Podcast doesn't Appear in iTunes Search

    Hello to all,
Like many I am experiencing this very anoying problem.
My podcast was accepted by Apple on the 1st of January.
    I was sent this phobos:
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=271148581
But after more than a month, I still can't find my Channel in the iTunes Search and I triple checked that both the channel and the items have tags and they do.
    My feed location is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/AirPodbyAirDrop
I really don't know what else to do. So please help !
    Thanks

Thanks Roger. That's not the answer I wanted to hear, but it may be the truth.
I don't understand why they would even have a <itunes:keywords> field if it never really gets used?
Also- I've found that the search returns favor the title of the episode. For instance, if you search for 'Georgia Tech', my podcast will come up because we had 'Georgia Tech' in the name of one of our podcasts.
    Very strange....
I also think it might have something to do with feedburner's handeling of the xml code.
I'd appreciate any more suggestions. Thanks!

  • My podcast doesn't appear on Itunes search

It has been 4 days now since I created my podcast and it still does not appear on Itunes search, nor does it appear when attemtping to browse for it under the categories and subcategories section. my podcast feed was validated so there doesn't appear to be anything wrong, and the image link is correct for the cover art...can anyone help?? Or do I have to wait a month till it finally shows up?

It can take quite a long time. It's not possible to comment further without knowing the details of your podcast.

  • Special Characters in iTunes Search

If I'm searching for "González" and I enter "Gonzalez" in the search box, iTunes used to return hits for "González". Now, I have to enter "González" specifically- "Gonzalez" returns no results. Is there a way to get iTunes to treat accented characters (like "á") as their ASCII equivalents for the purposes of search? Maybe detecting the language & keyboard settings? This definitely wasn't a problem before, although I'm not sure if it started with iTunes 9. I just happened to notice it after upgrading to iTunes 9.

I have the same issue. When I search for Varese (a composer) I get one album; but when I search for Varèse (with the accent) I get several albums. Since CDs with composers with foreign names often are inconsistent about accents, I need iTunes search feature to be INCLUSIVE.

  • Can you filter iTunes search results by video or audio podcasts?

I have been searching for hours and haven't found a definite answer. Anyone know if this is possible?
Can you filter iTunes search results by video or audio podcasts?

I'm having the same problem. I go to Podcasts/Video Podcasts/News and they only give the featured, favorites (whose?), etc. I want to see all video news podcasts but if I then click on see all, it drops the video classification and shows all news podcasts. The iTunes search in general leaves a lot to be desired; its not very intuitive or pleasant to use, not the usual Apple experience.

  • Itunes search not finding podcasts keywords

So I created a podcast about a game called League of Legends.
    Link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/nexusdown-podcast/id578816992
when the podcast was created I included the following tags as shown:
    Tags: league of legends,leagueoflegends,lol,nexusdown,nexus down,cheostian,restartt,deangelo,thiene,video games,games,moba
The podcast has been up for a few days now.  However, when I use itunes search and search for league of legends, it shows a number of other people's podcasts but not mine. When I try any of the rest of the above tags in search the only ones that are successful are nexusdown or nexus down.  I use buzzsprout to post my podcasts.
It's not very helpful if they have to know the name of my podcast to find it :/
    Any suggestions?

It does take some time before the search works fully, though the keywords search has always been a bit flaky. You have more than the 12 allowed words, so you should trim them: and it's pointless including 'of' as a keyword. Possibly if you wait a bit the results will start to show.

  • "Not" operator in iTunes search?

Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a "not" operator to exclude a word from your itunes search, say to keep if from picking upi tracks you don't want. This operator would function in a way that would be similar to the "-" operator on google, so you could search for:
    apple -computer
to get all apple results that did not include the word computer. On iTunes I'd love to do things like search for:
    U2 -Zooropa
and get all of U2 except Zooropa, but I don't think you can.
I realize I could make playlists to pinpoint specific sets of songs, but I don't need to save them for posterity, my preferences change so often, I just want a more refined search.

This sounds like a really good idea. You can suggest it to Apple at the feedback section of the Apple website.

  • I am trying to recover my iTunes security questions, but my only option is to send the info link to an e-mail I do not have access to on weekends...

I am trying to recover my iTunes security questions, but my only option is to send the info link to my work e-mail.  I won't be at work until Monday.  Any suggestions on changing this option?

    Hi Carollmt,
I love sharing playlists with people too.  The instructions for syncing an iPod can be found at the following link:
iTunes: Syncing media content to iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1351
If is the first time you are syncing your husband's iPod with your computer, it will remove his music currently on his iPod and replace it with the music you are trying to sync.  If you don't want to remove the music currently on your husband's iPod, you can transfer your music to his iTunes library using Home Sharing.  Expand the Home Sharing section in the following article for steps to setup Home Sharing and use it to transfer music:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

  • Can iTunes search for all music on my system and rebuild the library?

Is there any way to make iTunes search for all music on my hard drive and completely rebuild the library from scratch?
    Thanks.

do you know how to re-locate files to an existing library?
All of a sudden, about 2/3 of my songs (over 6,000) will not play and a box comes up saying "The song 'x' could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I went to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and have the correct (fixed) external drive letter selected for the folder location. and the files haven't moved, but iTunes isn't finding them. Restarted the computer making sure the drive was on.
I'd like to not lose all the ratings I've worked on. Hoping you or someone has a solution!!
    thanks!

  • Why cant i search for artists in my itunes search area?

why cant i search for music/artists in my itunes search area when i'm logged on to itunes?

I should be more specific, I live in the USA, Type Disney into the search and then go to movies, you will see a list of Disney movies.
BUT that is not all the Disney films on Itunes.
The Majority of Disney films that are available on Itunes do not show up when searching the word Disney.
You have to look them up individualy by name. For Example: Darby O'Gill and the little People, Pocahantas 2, Atlantis: Milo's return, Ducktales the Movie, The Sword in the Stone, The Rescuers Down Under.
All of these and MANY more do not come up when you search for Disney or Disney movies.
    Why?
